Click-chemistry compatible structures, click-chemistry functionalized structures, and materials and methods for making the same

According to several embodiments, a composition of matter includes: a three-dimensional structure comprising photo polymerized molecules. At least some of the photo polymerized molecules further comprise one or more protected click-chemistry compatible functional groups; and at least portions of one or more surfaces of the three-dimensional structure are functionalized with one or more of the protected click-chemistry compatible functional groups. An additive manufacturing resin suitable for fabricating a click-chemistry compatible composition of matter includes: a photo polymerizable compound; and a click-chemistry compatible compound. A method of forming an additive manufacturing resin suitable for fabricating a click-chemistry compatible composition of matter includes: reacting a compound comprising a terminal alkyne group or a terminal azide group with a protecting reagent to form a protected reactive diluent precursor, reacting the precursor with a compound to form a protected reactive diluent; and mixing the protected reactive diluent with a photo polymerizable compound.

Interfacial X-Ray Scattering from Small Surfaces: Adapting Mineral-Fluid Structure Methods for Microcrystalline Materials

Crystal truncation rod (CTR) X-ray diffraction is an invaluable tool for measuring mineral surface and adsorbate structures, and has been applied to several environmentally and geochemically important systems. Traditionally, the method has been restricted to single crystals with lateral dimensions >3 mm. Minerals that meet this size criterion represent a minute fraction of those that are relevant to interfacial geochemistry questions, however. Crystal screening, data collection, and CTR measurement methods have been developed for crystals of <0.3 mm in lateral size using the manganese oxide mineral chalcophanite (ZnMn 3 O 7 •3H 2 O) as a case study. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the feasibility of applying the CTR technique to previously inaccessible surfaces, opening up a large suite of candidate substrates for future study.

Hydrodynamics of countercurrent flows in a structured packed column: effects of initial wetting and dynamic contact angle

The structured packed column has gained considerable attention as a prospective technology to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions from thermal power plants. The computational flow investigation of such systems is a multiscale problem, and local hydrodynamics plays a key role in overall column efficiency. Accordingly, multiphase flow studies in the representative elementary unit (REU) of a packed column can offer insights into the local flow behavior such as flow pattern, interfacial area, etc. The interfacial area plays a key role in the overall interphase mass transfer and thereby in separation efficiency. The predicted effective area matches well with corresponding ones in experiments for Mellapak 250.Y packings. The contact angle (i.e., solid substrate behavior) is one of the critical factors that dictates wettings, and thereby the interfacial area. The dynamic contact angle (DCA) was considered in order to explore the effects of contact angle hysteresis on the interfacial area. DCA has more pronounced impact on the interfacial area for a solvent possessing a higher value of surface tension and equilibrium contact angle. The interfacial area shows temporal undulation and does not achieve a pseudo steady state due to the capillary force. In contrary, the interfacial area gets a net value for a solvent having low surface tension value. Further, specification of the static contact angle at the solid substrate shows the least value of the interfacial area. We also extensively studied the effect of the initial sheet condition (dry vs wet) on the interfacial area. The initially wetted sheets show slightly higher value of the interfacial area as compared to the initially dry sheets at a fixed flow rate for a solvent having high surface tension value. Wetting hysteresis decreases with increasing liquid loads. On the other hand, wetting hysteresis does not occur for a solvent having value of low surface tension and equilibrium contact angle.

How structural differences influence cross-model consistency: An electric sector case study

Multiple models are often employed to describe a range of possible outcomes for one or more scenarios, yielding insights into causal relationships and their uncertainties. Electric sector capacity expansion scenarios are a common topic of such efforts due to the economic influence of the electric sector, but model results typically span a broad solution space despite efforts to harmonize input assumptions, making decision implications difficult to discern. This study investigates the relationship between input harmonization and cross-model scenario consistency under disparate electric sector scenarios. We compare cross-model consistency between two state-of-the-art electric sector capacity expansion models (GCAM-USA and ReEDS) for six electric sector scenarios comprising alternate assumptions about fossil fuel resource availability, technology innovation, and long-term economy-wide transitions under four harmonization configurations varying model representations of electricity demand, fuel prices, renewable resources, and capacity retirements. These comparisons reveal that cross-model consistency can vary across scenarios under a given harmonization configuration, suggesting that harmonization efforts must often be scenario-specific if comparable cross-model consistency is desired. Model structural differences can hinder consistency, and the impact of these differences can depend on the scenario. Ultimately, thorough harmonization can reveal insights into cross-model consistency, which can be used to tighten uncertainty bounds and improve the decision-making implications of multi-model activities.

Structural Investigation of Technetium Dibutylphosphate Species Using X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy

The speciation of Tc after the extraction of Tc(IV) from H 2 O and 1 M HNO 3 by dibutylphosphoric acid (HDBP) in dodecane has been studied by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Results show the formation of dimeric species with Tc 2 O 2 and Tc 2 O units, and the formulas [Tc 2 O 2 (DBP·HDBP) 4 ] (1) and [Tc 2 O(NO 3 ) 2 (DBP) 2 (DBP·HDBP) 2 ] (2) were, respectively, proposed for the species extracted from H 2 O and 1 M HNO 3 . The interatomic Tc–Tc distances found in the Tc 2 O 2 and Tc 2 O units [2.55(3) and 3.57(4) Å, respectively] are similar to the ones found in Tc(IV) dinuclear species. It is likely that the speciation of Tc(IV) in dodecane is due to the extraction of a species with a Tc 2 O unit for (2) and to the redissolution of a Tc(IV)-DBP solid for (1). The XAFS results for (1) and (2) were compared to that obtained for the extraction of Tc(IV) with TBP/HDBP/dodecane from 0.5 M HNO 3 , (3) which highlight the formation of Tc mononuclear nitrate species {i.e. [Tc(NO 3 ) 3 (DBP)] or [Tc(NO 3 ) 2 (DBP·HDBP)]}. These results confirm the importance of the preparation and speciation of the Tc(IV) aqueous solutions prior to extraction and how much this influences and drives the final Tc speciation in organic extraction. Here, these studies outline the complexity of Tc separation chemistry and provide insights into the behavior of Tc during the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel.

Elucidating the Role of Hydrogen Bonding in the Optical Spectroscopy of the Solvated Green Fluorescent Protein Chromophore: Using Machine Learning to Establish the Importance of High-Level Electronic Structure

Hydrogen bonding interactions with chromophores in chemical and biological environments play a key role in determining their electronic absorption and relaxation processes, which are manifested in their linear and multidimensional optical spectra. For chromophores in the condensed phase, the large number of atoms needed to simulate the environment has traditionally prohibited the use of high-level excited-state electronic structure methods. By leveraging transfer learning, we show how to construct machine-learned models to accurately predict the high-level excitation energies of a chromophore in solution from only 400 high-level calculations. Here, we show that when the electronic excitations of the green fluorescent protein chromophore in water are treated using EOM-CCSD embedded in a DFT description of the solvent the optical spectrum is correctly captured and that this improvement arises from correctly treating the coupling of the electronic transition to electric fields, which leads to a larger response upon hydrogen bonding between the chromophore and water.

The Structural Origins of Intense Circular Dichroism in a Waggling Helicene Nanoribbon

We report the synthesis of a new perylene-diimide-based helical nanoribbon, which exhibits the largest molar electronic circular dichroism in the visible range of any molecule. Here, this nanoribbon also displays a substantial increase in molar circular dichroism relative to a smaller helical analogue, even though they share a similar structure: both nanoribbons incorporate two conformationally dynamic double-[4]helicene termini and a rigid [6]helicene-based core within their helical superstructures. Using DFT and TDDFT calculations, we find that the double-[4]helicenes within both nanoribbons orient similarly in solution; as such, conformational differences do not account for the disparities in circular dichroism. Instead, our results implicate the configuration of the double-[6]helicene within the larger nanoribbon as the source of the observed chiroptical amplification.

A Holistic Approach for Elucidating Local Structure, Dynamics, and Speciation in Molten Salts with High Structural Disorder

To examine ion solvation, exchange, and speciation for minority components in molten salts (MS) typically found as corrosion products, we propose a multimodal approach combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, and rate theory of ion exchange. Going beyond conventional EXAFS analysis, our method can accurately quantify populations of different coordination states of ions with highly disordered coordination environments via linear combination fitting of the EXAFS spectra of these coordination states computed from AIMD to the experimental EXAFS spectrum. In a case study of dilute Ni(II) dissolved in the ZnCl 2 +KCl melts, our method reveals heterogeneous distributions of coordination states of Ni(II) that are sensitive to variations in temperature and melt composition. These results are fully explained by the difference in the chloride exchange dynamics at varied temperatures and melt compositions. Finally, this insight will enable a better understanding and control of ion solubility and transport in MS.

Structure of Gas Phase Monohydrated Nicotine: Implications for Nicotine’s Native Structure in the Acetylcholine Binding Protein

In this work, we report a joint experimental–theoretical study of the never reported before structure and infrared spectra of gas phase monohydrated nicotine (NIC) and nornicotine (NOR) and use them to assign their protonation sites. NIC’s biological activity is strongly affected by its protonation site, namely, the pyrrolidine (Pyrro-NICH + , anticipated active form) and pyridine (Pyri-NICH + ) forms; however, these have yet to be directly experimentally determined in either the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR, no water present) or the acetylcholine-binding protein (AChBP, a single water molecule is present) but can only be inferred to be Pyrro-NICH + from the intermolecular distance to the neighboring residues (i.e., tryptophan). Our temperature-controlled double ion trap infrared spectroscopic experiments assisted by the collisional stripping method and high-level theoretical calculations yield the protonation ratio of Pyri:Pyrro = 8:2 at 240 K for the gas phase NICH + ···(H 2 O) complex, which resembles the molecular cluster present in the AChBP. Therefore, a single water molecule in the gas phase enhances this ratio in NICH + relative to the 3:2 for the nonhydrated gas phase NICH + in a trend that contrasts with the almost exclusive presence of Pyrro-NICH + in aqueous solution. In contrast, the Pyri-NORH + protomer is exclusively observed, a fact that may correlate with its weaker biological activity.

Identification of pleiotropic loci mediating structural and non-structural carbohydrate accumulation within the sorghum bioenergy association panel using high-throughput markers

Molecular characterization of diverse germplasm can contribute to breeding programs by increasing genetic gain for sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] improvement. Identifying novel marker-trait associations and candidate genes enriches the existing genomic resources and can improve bioenergy-related traits using genomic-assisted breeding. In the current scenario, identifying the genetic loci underlying biomass and carbon partitioning is vital for ongoing efforts to maximize each carbon sink’s yield for bioenergy production. Here, we have processed a high-density genomic marker (22 466 550) data based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS) using a set of 365 accessions from the bioenergy association panel (BAP), which includes ~19.7 million (19 744 726) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and 2.7 million (~2 721 824) insertion deletions (indels). A set of high-quality filtered SNP (~5.48 million) derived markers facilitated the assessment of population structure, genetic diversity, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for various traits related to biomass and its composition using the BAP. The phenotypic traits for GWAS included seed color (SC), plant height (PH), days to harvest (DTH), fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), brix content % (BRX), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC), and lignin content. Several novel loci and candidate genes were identified for bioenergy-related traits, and some well-characterized genes for plant height ( Dw1 and Dw2 ) and the YELLOW SEED1 locus ( Y1 ) were validated. We further performed a multi-variate adaptive shrinkage analysis to identify pleiotropic QTL, which resulted in several shared marker-trait associations among bioenergy and compositional traits. Significant marker-trait associations with pleiotropic effects can be used to develop molecular markers for trait improvement using a marker-assisted breeding approach. Significant nucleotide diversity and heterozygosity were observed between photoperiod-sensitive and insensitive individuals of the panel. This diverse bioenergy panel with genomic resources will provide an excellent opportunity for further genetic studies, including selecting parental lines for superior hybrid development to improve biomass-related traits in sorghum.
