Impacts of solar energy utilization

Various methods of conducting surveys and analyses to determine the attitude of the public toward the energy crisis are discussed. Models to determine the impact of the energy crisis and proposed alternative sources of energy on the social structure are analyzed. The various interest groups which are concerned with energy and the nature of their interest are identified. The government structure for controlling resource production and allocation is defined.

High-energy solar X-ray polarimetry

The evidence for the existence of a highly energetic nonthermal electron distribution in the solar atmosphere during energetic flares is presented. Relationships are discussed between the proposed X-ray emission processes, electron distribution, and possible X-ray polarization. A description of various techniques of measuring X-ray polarization is given, and the applicability of these methods to the problem of solar X-ray measurements is considered. An idealized polarimeter capable of obtaining the most useful data related to the energetics of solar flares is proposed, and current and projected polarization experiments are discussed.

SESOP: Program for solar-energy heating-systems analysis

Space heating and cooling loads are calculated for each building based on outside environment, desired inside conditions, building construction and geometry, domestic power usage, occupancy rate, and occupant metabolic rate. Loads are summed to determine requirements of central and alternative utility systems.

Improved solar-energy collector

Fixed, but reversible, concentrator with vacuum tube receiver is fabricated from individual asymmetrical vee-shaped members having two sides, each of which presents different preselected slope angle to Sun. Trough concentrator maintains year-round concentration factor of 2 (or better) for most significant collection period of day.

Integrated photovoltaic-thermal solar energy conversion systems

A combined photovoltaic/thermal collector has been built and is now being tested. Initial tests have concentrated on evaluating the thermal efficiency of the collector before and after the silicon cells are mounted. With likely improvements in bonding between cells and receiver and in the absorptivity of the cells, thermal efficiencies greater than 50% can be expected for the combined receiver operating at 100 C.

Direct solar energy conversion for large scale terrestrial use

Various techniques to increase the open circuit voltage are being explored. It had been previously observed that cells made on CdS deposited from a single source gave a consistently higher V sub oc. Further tests have now shown that this effect may in fact relate to differences in source and substrate temperatures. The resulting differences in CdS structure and crystallinity are being documented. Deposits of mixed CdS and ZnS are being produced and will be initially made into cells using the conventional barriering technique. Analysis of I-V characteristics at temperatures between 25 and 110 C is being perfected to provide nondestructive analysis of the Cu2S. Changes due to vacuum heat treatments and exposure to oxygen are also being monitored by the same technique. Detailed spectral response measurements are being made.

Analysis of GaAs and Si solar energy hybrid systems

Various silicon hybrid systems are modeled and compared with a gallium arsenide hybrid system. The hybrid systems modeled produce electric power and also thermal power which can be used for heating or air conditioning. Various performance indices are defined and used to compare the system performance: capital cost per electric power out; capital cost per total power out; capital cost per electric power plus mechanical power; annual cost per annual electric energy; and annual cost per annual electric energy plus annual mechanical work. These performance indices indicate that concentrator hybrid systems can be cost effective when compared with present day energy costs.

Solar-energy bibliography

Bibliography lists over 100 ongoing projects, Tech Briefs, papers and periodicals, and technical reports and patents pertaining to work performed at Marshall Space Flight Center and by its contractors. Each item includes brief summary or abstract of work, its publication date (except for ongoing research), and a listing of other materials related to that work. Comprehensive subject index is also included.

Selection standard for FEP films for solar energy

Purple fluorocarbon ethylene propylene (FEP) films are more efficient due to low absorptance. Designers seeking to improve coatings quantify this effect and devise simple screening test based on transmittance of films.

Prototype residential solar-energy system-engineering analysis

Tests indicate performance very close to theoretical predictions. Major objectives were to verify system installation techniques, operation, and performance; to verify performance of individual subsystems; and to provide general test data base comparison with field data.

Solar energy meter

An instrument was developed to continually integrate the energy available in incident light on a specifically oriented surface. The unit was designed for outdoor use in remote locations and is capable of operation over a temperature range of -20 to +60 C with good accuracy. The unit is weather resistant, requires low power, has a high input impedance, is inexpensive, and has a visual readout and an analog output for recording.

Thermal performance evaluation of Solar Energy Products Company (SEPCO) 'Soloron' collector tested outdoors

The test article, Model EF-212, Serial Nr. 002, is a single glazed collector with a nonselective absorber plate, using flowing air as the heat transfer medium. The absorber plate and box frame are aluminum and the insulation is one inch isocyanurate foam board with thermal conductivity of 0.11 (BTU/sq ft Hr0/ft.) The tests included the following. (1) time constant test, (2) collector efficiency test, (3) collector stagnation test, (4) incident angle modifier test, (5) load test, (6) weathering test, and (7) absorber plate optical properties test. The results of these tests are tabulated, graphed, or otherwise recorded.
