Computation of the Strain Induced Critical Current Reduction in the 16 T Nb 3 Sn Test Facility Dipole

A test facility dipole is being developed at LBNL, targeting a 16 T field in a 144 mm wide aperture. The magnet uses a block design, with two double-pancake coils. In order to minimize motion under the large Lorentz forces, the coils are preloaded against a thick aluminum shell and iron yoke using bladder and key technology. It is then crucial to verify that the performance of the magnet is not degraded due to strain induced on the Nb 3 Sn conductor during assembly, cool-down and powering. The critical current of extracted strands was measured in a varying background magnetic field and as a function of the applied longitudinal strain. Finite element analysis was used to extract the strain state inside the superconducting strands during magnet assembly and operation. This strain was then compared to the measurements to evaluate potential reversible and irreversible effects on the magnet performances. Here the results suggest that the magnet can reach 16 T with sufficient margin, with no irreversible degradation in the high field region.

Comparison of Nb 3 Sn Insulation Systems With as Received and De-Sized Glass

Epoxy cracking has been the main suspected contributor to training in Nb 3 Sn magnets for some time, as it leads to energy release and magnet quenching. Cracking in a superconducting composite can occur from several modes, and the likelihood of these modes is not well understood. Failure has been observed between insulation systems and the superconducting cable itself rather than within the cable or insulation. To target the behavior at the interface, samples have been fabricated and tested for Mode I fracture toughness in an adapted version of ASTM D5528. This work seeks to better characterize the fracture toughness of this interface to better understand how to model and design insulation systems.

Competing magnetic phases and fluctuation-driven scalar spin chirality in the kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures are essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn 6 Sn 6 by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them hosts a large topological Hall effect (THE). We propose a previously unidentified fluctuation-driven mechanism, which leads to the THE at elevated temperatures. This interesting physics comes from parametrically frustrated interplanar exchange interactions that trigger strong magnetic fluctuations. Our results pave a path to chiral spin textures, promising for novel spintronics.

Large-Aperture High-Field Nb 3 Sn Quadrupole Magnets for HiLumi

The HL-LHC Inner Triplet quadrupole magnets use Nb 3 Sn superconductor for the first time in a particle accelerator. Coil peak field, forces, and stored energy density are significantly higher than in previous accelerator magnets. The original design addressed all these challenges. Lessons learned in the early phases made the final design and specifications for series magnets more robust.

Relaxor behavior and electrothermal properties of Sn- and Nb-modified (Ba,Ca)TiO 3 Pb-free ferroelectric

Relaxor ferroelectrics have drawn attention for possible applications in solid-state cooling and thermal energy harvesting, owing to their electrothermal energy conversion properties. Here, we have synthesized and characterized the structure–property correlations of a new Sn- and Nb-doped (Ba,Ca)TiO 3 relaxor ferroelectric with large pyroelectric and electrocaloric effects over a broad temperature range. We observed two peaks for the temperature-dependent pyroelectric coefficient: (i) -(∂P/∂T) ~ 563 µC/(m 2 K) at T~ 270 K and (ii) -(∂P/∂T) ~ 1021 µC/(m 2 K) at T~ 320 K. In addition, a broad peak for electrocaloric temperature change is observed near 320 K with a relative cooling power of ~17 J/kg. These properties could be correlated to structural changes observed using X-ray diffraction at two different temperature ranges in the material. Analysis of high-energy X-ray scattering and specific heat capacity data revealed a transition from the cubic to tetragonal phase near T m ~ 320 K, whereas an additional increase in the tetragonality (c/a) of the polar phase is observed below T s ~ 270 K.

Surface Impedance of Nb$_3$Sn and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\sigma}$ in High Magnetic Fields

New potential rf applications of superconductors emerged with the need to operate in high dc magnetic fields (up to 16 T) where vortex motion dictates the response: the beam screen coating of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) [1] and haloscopes, i.e. rf cavities for the axions detection [2]. However, very few data are available in the required regimes. We present in this work measurements of the surface impedance Z up to 12 T on bulk Nb₃Sn and YBCO thin films grown by different techniques. The measurements are performed with a dielectric loaded resonator operating at 15 GHz. We obtained the vortex motion resistivity and extracted the high frequency vortex motion parameters [3]: the depinning frequency, the flux-flow resistivity and the pinning constant, as well as their temperature and field dependences. Substantial differences are highlighted in the high frequency pinning properties of the studied materials, providing useful information on possible improvements in view of applications. A comparison with the results obtained in the microwave frequency range at lower fields (up to 1 T) is given.

Characterization of Tri-lab β-Tin (Sn)

This report documents details of the microstructure and mechanical properties of -tin (Sn), that is used in the Tri-lab (Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)) collaboration project on Multi-phase Tin Strength. We report microstructural features detailing the crystallographic texture and grain morphology of as-received -tin from electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD). Temperature and strain rate dependent mechanical behavior was investigated by multiple compression tests at temperatures of 200K to 400K and strain rates of 0.0001 /s to 100 /s. Tri-lab tin showed significant temperature and strain rate dependent strength with no significant plastic anisotropy. A sample to sample material variation was observed from duplicate compression tests and texture measurements. Compression data was used to calibrate model parameters for temperature and rate dependent strength models, Johnson-Cook (JC), Zerilli-Armstrong (ZA) and Preston-Tonks-Wallace (PTW) strength models.

Critical current and stability tests of Nb 3 Sn for LBNL CCT magnet project

The Nb 3 Sn wires received from LBNL include the original round wires as well as the extracted wires from Rutherford cables. Total of 12 samples were prepared and heat treated. Five of them were tested for electric field versus current (E-I), among them 4 samples were further tested for electric field versus magnetic field (E-H). E-I traces were measured in magnetic field between 5 T and 8 T at 4.2 K. The critical currents of these sample are between 924 A and 993 A at 5 T. E-H measurements were performed at currents between 900 and 1500 A at 4.2 K. The stability currents, which is defined as the maximum current without quench during the E-H test, are determined to be between 1100 A and 1400 A. A separate Excel file presenting all the critical current and E-H curves is attached.

FEM Modeling and Simulation of 2-D High Specific Heat Nb 3 Sn Wires

In the past few years, new high specific heat Nb 3 Sn wires have gained much focus at FNAL. Indeed, they have proved to be more stable against thermal perturbations with respect to standard wires. Nevertheless, a trade off exists between their thermal efficiency and production feasibility. In this report I describe the thermal and structural models that I have developed by exploiting ANSYS Mechanical APDL ® , which I got acquainted with at the beginning of my training. The aim has been to optimize the location of high specific heat elements in order to obtain an optimal thermal stability, while minimizing the risk of wire breakage during drawing. FEM results are compared with experimental ones made beforehand. Other minimum quench energy (MQE) thermal models have been developed for expected new experimental results. New data may improve the understanding of the embedded physical uncertainties in the model.

NS 1987A in SN 1987A

The possible detection of a compact object in the remnant of SN 1987A presents an unprecedented opportunity to follow its early evolution. The suspected detection stems from an excess of infrared emission from a dust blob near the compact object’s predicted position. The infrared excess could be due to the decay of isotopes like 44 Ti, accretion luminosity from a neutron star or black hole, magnetospheric emission or a wind originating from the spin down of a pulsar, or to thermal emission from an embedded, cooling neutron star. In this work it is shown that the last possibility is the most plausible as the other explanations are disfavored by other observations and/or require fine-tuning of parameters. Not only are there indications that the dust blob overlaps the predicted location of a kicked compact remnant, but its excess luminosity also matches the expected thermal power of a 30 yr old neutron star. Furthermore, models of cooling neutron stars within the minimal cooling paradigm readily fit both NS 1987A and Cas A, the next-youngest known neutron star. If correct, a long heat transport timescale in the crust and a large effective stellar temperature are favored, implying relatively limited crustal n- 1 S 0 superfluidity and an envelope with a thick layer of light elements, respectively. If the locations do not overlap, then pulsar spin down or accretion might be more likely, but the pulsar’s period and magnetic field or the accretion rate must be rather finely tuned. In this case, NS 1987A may have enhanced cooling and/or a heavy-element envelope.

Broad frequency tuning of a Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting microwave cavity for dark matter searches

We demonstrate a novel broad-frequency tuning mechanism for superconducting microwave cavities designed for dark matter searches. Using a Nb$_3$Sn-coated cigar-shaped cavity operating at approximately 9 GHz, we achieve continuous frequency tuning exceeding 1 GHz by mechanically separating the two cavity halves: a "tuning-by-opening" technique. Finite-element method simulations predict that radiative losses do not degrade the quality factor even for large openings, as a closed cavity with an intrinsic quality factor of $10^7$ maintains this value for apertures up to 9 mm, corresponding to a tuning range from 9.0 to 7.5 GHz. Experimental validation using both copper ring spacers and a continuous sliding mechanism confirms $Q_0$ values exceeding the dark matter quality factor across the entire explored frequency range, despite mechanical imperfections and film non-uniformities. This tuning approach avoids inserting elements into the resonant volume, making it particularly suitable for high-Q superconducting cavities in axion haloscope experiments and readily applicable to REBCO-based implementations capable of operating in multi-tesla magnetic fields.
