Thermal-stress fatigue behavior of twenty-six superalloys

The comparative thermal-stress fatigue resistances of 26 nickeland cobalt-base alloys were determined by fluidized bed tests. Cycles to cracking differed by almost three orders of magnitude for these materials, with directional solidification and surface protection showing definite benefit. The alloy-coating combination with the highest thermal-stress fatigue resistance was directionally solidified NASA TAZ-8A with an RT-SP coating. Its oxidation resistance was also excellent, showing approximately a 1/2 percent weight loss after 14,000 fluidized bed cycles.

First results from the six-axis electron spectrometer on ISEE-1

A survey, using results from the first 25 orbits of ISEE-1, was made of some aspects of electrons in the dawn magnetosheath. There are indications that the flow of plasma is not uniformly turbulent over this region. The electron heat flux is observed to be directed away from the shock and to have an average value of about twice the interplanetary heat flux. Many magnetopause crossings were observed and usually resemble abrupt transitions from one well-defined plasma state to another. The ejection of plasma from flux tubes convected up against the magnetopause is observed for about half the time, and its thickness and dependance on the solar wind Mach number agrees with theoretical predictions. A full traversal of the whole forward hemisphere of the magnetosheath is required to fully confirm these deductions.

Aeosol lasts up to six minutes

Simple aerosol generator catalytically converts hydrogen peroxide to super-heated steam and then mixes steam with dye. Highly visible mist lasts for 6 minutes and can be used to study aerodynamic turbulence. Method does not depend on formation of ice crystals at cold high altitudes and is environmentally safe.

Mechanisms of water-salt metabolism disturbances in dogs subjected to six month hypokinesia

Water-salt metabolism in dogs during prolonged restricted motor activity (hypokinesia) was investigated. It was found that hydration occurred and fluid was redistributed between the extra- and intra-cellular sectors. Also, electrolyte excretion rose, and magnetism and calcium metabolism changed significantly. It is concluded that the forces caused by muscle strain proper (which was decreased under conditions of hypokinesia) influence the state of bone metabolism.

Backward deletion to minimize prediction errors in models from factorial experiments with zero to six center points

Population model coefficients were chosen to simulate a saturated 2 to the fourth power fixed effects experiment having an unfavorable distribution of relative values. Using random number studies, deletion strategies were compared that were based on the F distribution, on an order statistics distribution of Cochran's, and on a combination of the two. Results of the comparisons and a recommended strategy are given.

Analysis and improvement of contact dynamics simulation using the six degree of freedom motion system

The 6 DOF motion system was employed for closed loop simulation of the contact dynamics involved in the docking of two satellites. Under most initial conditions the system gives inaccurate results. It is well known that the presence of a time lag can generate instability in closed loop systems. In order to see if the time lag (about 200 ms.) in the 6 DOF system can can satisfactorily account for its errors, a simple computer model of the system incorporating this lag and other revelant parameters was implemented. The model in fact does predict all the observed rebound errors with reasonable precision. Also, since it is probable that the time delay can only be reduced but not eliminated, various compensation schemes were devised. Two give adequate correction for delays under 100 ms for a non preloaded probe. More powerful schemes may be adequate for the present 200 ms. environment and the presence of a preload.

Effect of six-month hypokinesia in dogs on mineral component, reconstruction and mechanical properties of bone tissue

Ca45 incorporation into the bones of the limbs, particularly in the area of the muscle attachment increased in dogs as a result of 6 month hypokinesia. There were no phenomena of osteoporosis in the cortical layer of the diaphyses; however, changes in the form of osteons, an increase in the number of anastomoses between the channels and the thinning of the subperiosteal layer pointed to disturbances of the bone tissue reconstruction. Mineral saturation of the bone microstructures of the experimental dogs had a tendency to rise. No changes in the mechanical properties of the long bones occurred as a result of hypokinesia in dogs.

Main rotor six degree-of-freedom isolation system analysis

The design requirements of the system have been defined and an isolator concept satisfies these requirements identified. Primary design objectives for the isolation system are 90% attenuation of all NP main rotor shaft loads at a weight penalty less than or equal to 1% of design gross weight. The configuration is sized for a UH-60A BLACK HAWK helicopter and its performance, risk, and system integration were evaluated through a series of parametric studies. Preliminary design was carried forward to insure that the design is practical and that the details of the integration of the isolator into the helicopter system are considered. Alternate ground and flight test demonstration programs necessary to verify the proposed isolator design are defined.

Electron densities for six planetary nebulae and HM SGE derived from the C 3 lambda 1907/1909 ratio

Electron densities for IC 418, NGC 6572, IC 1297, NGC 3242, NGC 6818, NGC 3211, and HM Sge derived from high dispersion IUE C III spectrograms are consistently higher than those derived from either surface brightness measurements of forbidden line intensity ratios in the visible. The nebulae were selected for a range of excitation classes from 3 to 9. Line splitting due to expansion velocities is observed for three objects. The great width of the lambda 1909 C III line in HM Sge suggests large expansion velocities.

Backward deletion to minimize prediction errors in models from factorial experiments with zero to six center points

Population model coefficients were chosen to simulate a saturated 2 to the 4th fixed-effects experiment having an unfavorable distribution of relative values. Using random number studies, deletion strategies were compared that were based on the F-distribution, on an order statistics distribution of Cochran's, and on a combination of the two. The strategies were compared under the criterion of minimizing the maximum prediction error, wherever it occurred, among the two-level factorial points. The strategies were evaluated for each of the conditions of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 center points. Three classes of strategies were identified as being appropriate, depending on the extent of the experimenter's prior knowledge. In almost every case the best strategy was found to be unique according to the number of center points. Among the three classes of strategies, a security regret class of strategy was demonstrated as being widely useful in that over a range of coefficients of variation from 4 to 65%, the maximum predictive error was never increased by more than 12% over what it would have been if the best strategy had been used for the particular coefficient of variation. The relative efficiency of the experiment, when using the security regret strategy, was examined as a function of the number of center points, and was found to be best when the design used one center point.

Update: Viking Lander NiCd batteries. Year six

The performance of NiCd batteries on the Viking Mars landers is discussed. During evaluation, three of the four batteries were maintained in the discharged state. Battery charge regimes and close-together, deep-discharge, reconditioning cycles to retard degradation of batteries are discussed. The effect of elevated temperatures during Martian summer on battery performance were also considered. Tabulated data for average battery capacity as a function of time are given. A design uplink to allow more frequent, greater depth of discharge reconditioning cycles was proposed.
