For the first time in the U.S. space program, digital synthetic aperture radar (SR) data were obtained from different incidence angles during Space Shuttle Mission 41-G. Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) data were obtained at incidence angles of 58 deg., 45 deg., and 28 deg., on October 9, 10, and 11, 1984, respectively, for a predominantly forested study area in northern Florida. Cloud-free LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (T.M.) data were obtained over the same area on October 12. The SIR-B data were processed and then digitally registered to the LANDSAT T.M. data by scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This is the only known digitally registered SIR-B and T.M. data set for which the data were obtained nearly simultaneously. The data analysis of this information is discussed.
Infrared MIR spectra more reproducible, and MIR crystal suffers less damage. Technique prevents lateral movement between elements in multiple-internal-reflection (MIR) cell during assembly. Reproducibility of infrared MIR spectra relies on ability to maintain condition of crystal, which is MIR element, and to control contact between crystal and sample. Cell used in infrared spectroscopy.
The dynamic interactions between the pack-ice recession and the occurrence of ice blooms of phytoplankton in waters of the marginal ice zone within an Antarctic ice edge were investigated using CZCS and SMMR imageries from the Nimbus 7 satellite (September 16-December 17, 1983), together with in situ measurements of pigments and sea ice concentration carried out from November 7 to December 2. A substantial amount of spatial variability in pigment concentration was observed to occur along the ice edge in the Weddell Sea. The relationships among light, ice distribution, and vertical stability and their effects on observed spatial variations in phytoplankton biomass are discussed. The results of this investigation suggest that the retreat of ice provides an input of significant volumes of meltwater which creates vertical stability for a period necessary to permit growth and accumulation of phytoplankton.
This paper considers the distortion effect of the simultaneous occurrence of locally resonant toroidal pulsations over a range of L shells on the interpretation of spacecraft observations of these waves. A theoretical model is developed which yields quantitative predictions of the phase shear effect that causes a shift from the true pulsation frequency measured from a spacecraft moving radially across L shells. Calculations with this model indicate that, due to this effect, the AMPTE/CCE satellite should observe 8-30 percent lower frequencies on outbound passes than on inbound passes. A comparison of fundamental mode frequency measurements made on 10 inbound and 9 outbound passes of the AMPTE/CCE satellite in the morning sector confirms the predictions of the model.
An attempt to analyze Voyager 1 magnetic field data for the existence of any ultralow-frequency hydromagnetic waves in the Io plasma torus is presented. The coincidence between the increase in wave activity and the entry into the Io plasma torus is in support of treating the torus as a low Alfven velocity region and thus as a hydromagnetic waveguide. A first theoretical treatment of hydromagnetic wave propagation within the torus suggests that decoupling of toroidal and poloidal type oscillations can occur under the condition of axisymmetry of the wave field. Numerical calculations of the fundamental mode toroidal and first harmonic poloidal eigenperiods for a model Jovian magnetosphere give values quite in agreement with the observed periods. Observations of nearly axisymmetric, decoupled toroidal and poloidal mode eigenoscillations of the Io plasma torus suggest a large-scale source mechanism for the detected magnetic field fluctuations.
A 74-nT sudden commencement on July 13, 1982, was observed in the magnetosphere, with instruments on the Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite. Inbound, near L = 4.5, the satellite was located at 1524 magnetic local time and 20 deg magnetic latitude. The sudden commmencement established a strong, east-west oscillation, with 100-s period, which was observed in the magnetic field, the electric field, and the plasma flow velocity records. There was also a compressional component of this 100-s oscillation and a rapidly damped 300-s compressional pulsation. The compressional oscillations may be an evidence of cavity resonances, excited by the sudden commencement. The cavity waves may, in turn, couple to toroidal waves in field line resonance at the satellite location. In addition, the sudden commencement caused the onset of waves with frequencies from 0.1 up to at least 0.5 Hz. The observations are compared with similar reports from earlier pulsations related to sudden commencements.
NASA is currently conducting a comprehensive reevaluation of such fundamental launch vehicle-related issues as the appropriate balance between manned and unmanned launchers, reusable vs expendable vehicles and vehicle components, and the evolutionary vs innovative new-system development courses. Two trends have emerged, both emphasizing system expense: (1) low cost/manned flight vehicles for personnel transfer, small payloads, servicing, rescue, and Space Station logistics, and (2) low cost/unit mass vehicles for large and multiple payloads, propellants, bulk cargoes, and heavy upper stages. Attention is given to the contributions made by CFD to liquid-fueled engine component design.
An efficient strategy for modeling the land surface boundary in general circulation models (GCMs) is presented which accounts for the effects of vegetation on surface energy fluxes and allows for an arbitrary number of vegetation types to coexist in a grid square. The GCM grid square is depicted as a 'mosaic' of vegetation 'tiles', with each tile consisting of a single vegetation type. The energy balance equation for each tile follows closely that of a single vegetation version of the simple biosphere (SiB) model of Sellers et al. (1986) but is simplified enough to be written in Penman-Monteith form. Each tile in the square is coupled independently to the GCM atmosphere, and tiles affect each other only through the atmosphere. This coupling strategy differs conceptually from that of models such as SiB that assume a homogeneous mixture of vegetation types within a GCM grid square. A quantitative comparison of the two strategies is presented.
Results are presented from the evaluation of the performance seeking control (PSC) optimization algorithm developed by Smith et al. (1990) for F-15 aircraft, which optimizes the quasi-steady-state performance of an F100 derivative turbofan engine for several modes of operation. The PSC algorithm uses onboard software engine model that calculates thrust, stall margin, and other unmeasured variables for use in the optimization. Comparisons are presented between the load cell measurements, PSC onboard model thrust calculations, and posttest state variable model computations. Actual performance improvements using the PSC algorithm are presented for its various modes. The results of using PSC algorithm are compared with similar test case results using the HIDEC algorithm.
