Microwave Radiometer: Meteorological Temperature Profiler (raw)

The microwave radiometer profiler (MWRP) provides vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, and cloud liquid water content as a function of height or pressure at approximately 5-minute intervals for nearly all weather conditions. The profiles are derived from measurements of absolute microwave radiances (expressed as "brightness temperatures") obtained at 12 frequencies in the range of 22-30 GHz and 51-59 GHz. The data are useful for input to numerical weather forecast models and others that require continuous, high-temporal-resolution profiles. The microwave radiance measurements are useful for testing models of microwave radiation transfer used to derive the profiles.

VISSS Raw data from SAIL at Gothic from November 2022 to June 2023

A Video in situ Snowfall Sensor (VISSS) records shadow images of precipitating hydrometeors from two perspective at a 90 degree angle with a frequency of 140 Hz. From this, hydrometeor properties such as particle size, shape, complexity, degree of riming, and fall velocity can be derived. The VISSS was set up next to the ARM mobile facility during the SAIL project located in the East River Watershed near Crested Butte, Colorado from November 2022 to June 2023. The deployment was funded by the CORSIPP project (Characterization of orography-influenced riming and secondary ice production and their effects on precipitation rates using radar polarimetry and Doppler spectra) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). More information about the VISSS can be found in Maahn et al. 2023 ( https://dx.doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2023-655 )

CTN-004: Rubin Observatory Raw Data File Format

At the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory we write data from the LSSTCam and LATISS instruments using FITS format with one file written per detector. Here we discuss the layout of those FITS files and describe the FITS headers.

Grown organic matter as a fuel raw material resource

An extensive search was made on biomass production from the standpoint of climatic zones, water, nutrients, costs and energy requirements for many species. No exotic species were uncovered that gave hope for a bonanza of biomass production under culture, location, and management markedly different from those of existing agricultural concepts. A simulation analysis of biomass production was carried out for six species using conventional production methods, including their production costs and energy requirements. These estimates were compared with data on food, fiber, and feed production. The alternative possibility of using residues from food, feed, or lumber was evaluated. It was concluded that great doubt must be cast on the feasibility of producing grown organic matter for fuel, in competition with food, feed, or fiber. The feasibility of collecting residues may be nearer, but the competition for the residues for return to the soil or cellulosic production is formidable.

Particle size distribution of typical ceramic raw materials by laser granulometry

The principles of the method are explained and the working of the CILAS 715 laser granulometer is described. The particle size distributions of milled glazes, quartz, feldspar and china clay were determined by this instrument and by Andreasen sedimentation. The agreement was good for isometric particles, but the china clay appears finer by sedimentation, because the platelets arrange themselves horizontally during sedimentation, while in the laser granulometer preferred orientation is prevented by circulation between the sample holder and the vibrated and stirred reservoir of the slip.

Food Acquisition: Food Ingredients, Raw Materials and Supply

The kind of food supply system that will serve the space station in coming years is considered. The direction and rate of evolution of space food service systems is also considered and what is needed to supply appropriate food to space station crews. Innovations in food sourcing, recipe development, pre-preparation, packaging, preservation, presentation, consumption and waste disposal are discussed. The development and validation of preparation systems and ingredients which minimize demands on crew time and provide maximum eating enjoyment is outlined.

Abundant raw material for cis-regulatory evolution in humans

Changes in gene expression and regulation--due in particular to the evolution of cis-regulatory DNA sequences--may underlie many evolutionary changes in phenotypes, yet little is known about the distribution of such variation in populations. We present in this study the first survey of experimentally validated functional cis-regulatory polymorphism. These data are derived from more than 140 polymorphisms involved in the regulation of 107 genes in Homo sapiens, the eukaryote species with the most available data. We find that functional cis-regulatory variation is widespread in the human genome and that the consequent variation in gene expression is twofold or greater for 63% of the genes surveyed. Transcription factor-DNA interactions are highly polymorphic, and regulatory interactions have been gained and lost within human populations. On average, humans are heterozygous at more functional cis-regulatory sites (>16,000) than at amino acid positions (<13,000), in part because of an overrepresentation among the former in multiallelic tandem repeat variation, especially (AC)(n) dinucleotide microsatellites. The role of microsatellites in gene expression variation may provide a larger store of heritable phenotypic variation, and a more rapid mutational input of such variation, than has been realized. Finally, we outline the distinctive consequences of cis-regulatory variation for the genotype-phenotype relationship, including ubiquitous epistasis and genotype-by-environment interactions, as well as underappreciated modes of pleiotropy and overdominance. Ordinary small-scale mutations contribute to pervasive variation in transcription rates and consequently to patterns of human phenotypic variation.

Statistical Analyses of Raw Material Data for MTM45-1/CF7442A-36% RW: CMH Cure Cycle

This report describes statistical characterization of physical properties of the composite material system MTM45-1/CF7442A, which has been tested and is currently being considered for use on spacecraft structures. This composite system is made of 6K plain weave graphite fibers in a highly toughened resin system. This report summarizes the distribution types and statistical details of the tests and the conditions for the experimental data generated. These distributions will be used in multivariate regression analyses to help determine material and design allowables for similar material systems and to establish a procedure for other material systems. Additionally, these distributions will be used in future probabilistic analyses of spacecraft structures. The specific properties that are characterized are the ultimate strength, modulus, and Poisson􀂶s ratio by using a commercially available statistical package. Results are displayed using graphical and semigraphical methods and are included in the accompanying appendixes.
