Energy normalization of TV viewed optical correlation (automated correlation plane analyzer for an optical processor)

An automatic correlation plane processor that can rapidly acquire, identify, and locate the autocorrelation outputs of a bank of multiple optical matched filters is described. The read-only memory (ROM) stored digital silhouette of each image associated with each matched filter allows TV video to be used to collect image energy to provide accurate normalization of autocorrelations. The resulting normalized autocorrelations are independent of the illumination of the matched input. Deviation from unity of a normalized correlation can be used as a confidence measure of correct image identification. Analog preprocessing circuits permit digital conversion and random access memory (RAM) storage of those video signals with the correct amplitude, pulse width, rising slope, and falling slope. TV synchronized addressing of 3 RAMs permits on-line storage of: (1) the maximum unnormalized amplitude, (2) the image x location, and (3) the image y location of the output of each of up to 99 matched filters. A fourth RAM stores all normalized correlations. A normalization approach, normalization for cross correlations, a system's description with block diagrams, and system's applications are discussed.

Control structures for high speed processors

A special processor was designed to function as a Reed Solomon decoder with throughput data rate in the Mhz range. This data rate is significantly greater than is possible with conventional digital architectures. To achieve this rate, the processor design includes sequential, pipelined, distributed, and parallel processing. The processor was designed using a high level language register transfer language. The RTL can be used to describe how the different processes are implemented by the hardware. One problem of special interest was the development of dependent processes which are analogous to software subroutines. For greater flexibility, the RTL control structure was implemented in ROM. The special purpose hardware required approximately 1000 SSI and MSI components. The data rate throughput is 2.5 megabits/second. This data rate is achieved through the use of pipelined and distributed processing. This data rate can be compared with 800 kilobits/second in a recently proposed very large scale integration design of a Reed Solomon encoder.

An Assessment of Alternate Thermal Protection Systems for the Space Shuttle Orbiter: Executive Summary - Volume 1

Alternate thermal protection system (TPS) concepts to the Space Shuttle Orbiter were assessed. Metallic, ablator, and carbon-carbon concepts which are the result of some previous design, manufacturing and testing effort were considered. Emphasis was placed on improved TPS durability, which could potentially reduce life cycle costs and improve Orbiter operational characteristics. Integrated concept/orbiter point designs were generated and analyzed on the basis of Shuttle design environments and criteria. A merit function evaluation methodology based on mission impact, life cycle costs, and risk was developed to compare the candidate concepts and to identify the best alternate. Voids and deficiencies in the technology were identified, along with recommended activities to overcome them. Finally, programmatic plans, including ROM costs and schedules, were developed for all activities required to bring the selected alternate system up to operational readiness.

Molecular processes in comets

Potential energy curves for the two lowest 2 sigma- states of OH are computed at the configuration-interaction level using four different basis sets. Electronic transition dipole moments connecting the excited 1 2 sigma- and 2(D) 2 sigma- states with each other and with he ground X2pi state are presented as functions of internuclear distance. The theoretical absorption oscillator strengths for the D 2 sigma-(v prime=0) reverser to X 2pi (v prime prime=0) transition are in good agreement with the empirical value derived from astronomical measurements. The photodissociation cross sections for absorption rom the v prime prime=0,1, and levels of the ground state into the continuum of the 1 2 sigma- state are calculated, and the interstellar and cometary photodissociation rates are derived.

Lubrication of 35-millimeter-bore ball bearings of several designs at speeds to 2.5 million DN

Parametric tests were conducted with 35mm bore, angular contact ball bearings with either a single or double-outer-land-guided cage. The bearings were either lubricated by oil jets or employed inner ring lubrication. Outer ring cooling was added in selected tests. Test conditions were a radial load of 222 N (50 lb) and/or a thrust load of 667 N (150 lb), shaft speeds to 72,000 rpm, and an oil inlet temperature of 394 K (250 F). Lubricant flow to the bearing ranged rom 300 to 1900 cc/min (0.08 to 0.50 gal/min). All bearings were successfully run at speeds to 2.5 million DN. Increasing the lubricant flow decreased bearing ring temperatures but increased bearing power loss. The power loss and race temperatures of a jet lubricated bearing with double-outer-land-guided cage were always higher than those of the single-land-guided-design at similar test conditions. The lowest bearing operating temperatures were achieved when inner ring lubrication and outer ring cooling were combined. Cage slip of a double-outer-land-guided cage was approximately twice that of a single-outer-land-guided cage.

Study of multi-kilowatt solar arrays for Earth orbit applications

A miniaturized Cassegrainian concentrator (MCC) solar array concept is being developed with the objective of significantly reducing the recurring cost of multikilowatt solar arrays. The desired cost reduction is obtained as a result of using very small high efficiency solar cells in conjuction with low cost optics. The MCC single element concept incident slar radiation is reflected rom a primary parabolic reflector to a secondary hyperbolic reflector and finally to a 4 millimeter diameter solar cell. A light catcher cone is used to improve off axis performance. The solar cell is mounted to a heat fin. An element is approximately 13 millimeters thick which permits efficient launch stowage of the concentrator system panels without complex optical component deployments or retractions. The MCC elements are packed in bays within graphite epoxy frames and are electrically connected into appropriate series-parallel circuits. A MCC sngle element with a 21 sq cm entrance aperture and a 20 efficient, 0.25 sq cm gallium arsenide solar cell has the same power output as 30 sq cm of 11-percent efficiency (at 68 C) silicon solar cells.

Inversion Algorithms for Water Vapor Radiometers Operating at 20.7 and 31.4 Ghz

Eight water vapor radiometers (WVRs) were constructed as research and development tools to support the Advanced System Programs in the Deep Space Network and the Crustal Dynamics Project. These instruments are intended to operate at the stations of the Deep Space Network (DSN), various radio observatories, and obile facilities that participate in very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) experiments. It is expected that the WVRs will operate in a wide range of meteorological conditions. Several algorithms are discussed that are used to estimate the line-of-sight path delay due to water vapor and columnar liquid water rom the observed microwave brightness temperatures provided by the WVRs. In particular, systematic effects due to site and seasonal variations are examined. The accuracy of the estimation as indicated by a simulation calculation is approximately 0.3 cm for a noiseless WVR in clear and moderately cloudy weather. With a realistic noise model of WVR behavior, the inversion accuracy is approximately 0.6 cm.

MST radar transmitter control and monitor system

A generalized transmitter control and monitor card was developed using the Intel 8031 (8051 family) microprocessor. The design was generalized so that this card can be utilized for virtually any control application with only firmware changes. The block diagram appears in Figure 2. The card provides for local control using a 16 key keypad (up to 64 keys are supported). The local display is four digits of 7 segment LEDs. The display can indicate the status of all major system parameters and provide voltage readout for the analog signal inputs. The card can be populated with only the chips required for a given application. Fully populated, the card has two RS-232 serial ports for computer communications. It has a total of 48 TTL parallel lines that can define as either inputs or outputs in groups of four. A total of 32 analog inputs with a 0-5 volt range are supported. In addition, a real-time clock/calendar is available if required. A total of 16 k bytes of ROM and 16 k bytes of RAM is available for programming. This card can be the basis of virtually any monitor or control system with appropriate software.

Research in the design of high-performance reconfigurable systems

An initial design for the Bit Processor (BP) referred to in prior reports as the Processing Element or PE has been completed. Eight BP's, together with their supporting random-access memory, a 64 k x 9 ROM to perform addition, routing logic, and some additional logic, constitute the components of a single stage. An initial stage design is given. Stages may be combined to perform high-speed fixed or floating point arithmetic. Stages can be configured into a range of arithmetic modules that includes bit-serial one or two-dimensional arrays; one or two dimensional arrays fixed or floating point processors; and specialized uniprocessors, such as long-word arithmetic units. One to eight BP's represent a likely initial chip level. The Stage would then correspond to a first-level pluggable module. As both this project and VLSI CAD/CAM progress, however, it is expected that the chip level would migrate upward to the stage and, perhaps, ultimately the box level. The BP RAM, consisting of two banks, holds only operands and indices. Programs are at the box (high-level function) and system level. At the system level initial effort has been concentrated on specifying the tools needed to evaluate design alternatives.

Infrared technology for satellite power conversion

Successful fabrication of bismuth bolometers led to the observation of antenna action rom array elements. Fabrication of the best antennas arrays was made more facile with finding that increased argon flow during the dc sputtering produced more uniform bismuth films and bonding to antennas must be done with the substrate temperaure below 100 C. Higher temperatures damaged the bolometers. During the testing of the antennas, it was found that the use of a quasi-optical system provided a uniform radiation field. Groups of antennas were bonded in series and in parallel with the parallel configuration showing the greater response.

Frequency Domain Control Design of Large Space Structures: A Practical Approach

Requirements indicate the need for much larger, more accurate, and in some cases, very dynamic satellites. Large control system bandwidths are needed to meet accuracy and response requirements while maintaining tight control over appendage oscillations. Studies in recent years have shown that linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controllers can achieve the desired performance if the system is linearized and if the system model is accurate. Results of an LQG controller applied to a single axis satellite with large solar arrays, are given. A reduced order model (ROM) comprises rigid body motion with dominant structural modes. Optimal control and estimation gains are calculated based on an extremely conservative 0.0005 critical damping ratio. In order to examine stability characteristics, single-input single-output (SISO) frequency response concepts are generalized to develop a method of displaying open loop frequency response of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control system.

A star camera aspect system suitable for use in balloon experiments

A balloon-borne experiment containing a star camera aspect system was designed, built, and flown. This system was designed to provide offset corrections to the magnetometer and inclinometer readings used to control an azimuth and elevation pointed experiment. The camera is controlled by a microprocessor, including commendable exposure and noise rejection threshold, as well as formatting the data for telemetry to the ground. As a background program, the microprocessor runs the aspect program to analyze a fraction of the pictures taken so that aspect information and offset corrections are available to the experiment in near real time. The analysis consists of pattern recognition of the star field with a star catalog in ROM memory and a least squares calculation. The performance of this system in ground based tests is described. It is part of the NASA/GSFC High Energy Gamma-Ray Balloon Instrument (2).

Annual and Semiannual Cycles Based on the Middle Atmosphere Reference Model

The SCR/PMR monthly temperature mean values were Fourier analysed at each latitude and pressure level to obtain the annual mean and the amplitude and phase of the annual and semiannual cycles. The phase is the month of the maximum, such that 1 = January 1, 1.5 = January 16, 2 = February 1, etc. Some very marked hemispheric differences noted are: (1) at 80 N there is a maximum amplitude of the annual cycle of 26 K at 2.5 mb, the corresponding maximum at 80 S is much stronger (35 K) and at a lower altitude (11 mb); (2) the semiannual amplitudes show the well known maximum over the tropics in the upper stratosphere, but also maxima at high latitudes; and (3) the annual mean shows a minimum at 50 S, 1 mb, and a corresponding weaker minimum at 60 N. In general, the hemispheres are remarkably similar and six months out of phase above about 0.3 mb (56 km). The two hemispheres are significantly different especially in winter after allowing for a six month shift. Changes rom summer to winter are so large by comparison that the annual cycles appear to be very similar.

Assessing the proficiency of software developers

The trend lines presented can be useful in a number of ways. They provide a baseline of comparision from which software developers can compare their performance against a large database of similar projects. This will often identify a organizational style. It was possible to quantify the organizational style using the Manpower Buildup Gradient. That the developer was a better than average producer on RAM based systems was shown. The Ck associated with the ROM system suggests that it is a different class of work. When this system is compared against the Firmware database it is very creditable. It is important to recognize that there are non linearities present in the software process. The non linearities are tied to system size. For comparative purposes one must always make judgements based on similar sizes. In the past the tendency has been to calculate a few ratios on several projects and then compare them without any regard to amount of functionality that was created. This practice can be very misleading and dangerous. The method described, used in a thoughtful analytic manner, can be very helpful.

Charge-coupled device (CCD) demonstrated to operate as either read-only-memory (ROM) or photon-programmable memory with capacity of 640,000 bits, with each bit capable of being weighted to more than 1,000 discrete analog levels. Larger memory capacities now possible using proposed approach in conjunction with CCD's now being fabricated, which yield over 4 x 10 to the ninth power discrete levels of information on single chip.

The status of the international Halley watch

More than 1000 professional astronomers worldwide actually observed Halley's comet from the ground. Preliminary logs from the observers indicate that 20-40 Gbytes of data were acquired in eight professional disciplines and as much as 5 Gbytes in the amateur network. The latter will be used to fill in gaps in the Archive and to provide a visual light curve. In addition roughly 400 Mbytes of data were taken on Comet Giacobini-Zinner. Data will be accepted for archiving until early 1989. The permanent archive will consist of a set of CD-ROMs and a set of books, publication of both to be completed by mid-1990. Data from the space missions will be included but only on the CDs. From every indication, the ground based effort and the space missions complimented each other beautifully, both directly in the solution of spacecraft navigation problems and indirectly in the solution of scientific problems. The major remaining concern is that scientists submit their data to the Archive before the 1989 deadline.
