Launch processing for Spacelab 1

The final integration of Spacelab payloads with the Shuttle is described. Attention is given to launch processing planning, schedules, quality control, and problem reports and configuration maintenance. Also covered are the integration and checkout of individual and combined experiments, mounting the end cones, attachment of the transfer tunnel, and inclusion of an extra experiments pallet. The entire Spacelab module was subjected to a full systems simulation before deliverance to the Orbiter bay. Modular parts that were transferred from building-to-building were placed in sealed containers filled with a purged atmosphere during transport.

Analyses of processing variables in propellant burn rate and modulus. I - Mixing times

The effect of the final mixing time on quality of smokeless AP/HTPB propellant with bimodal AP was examined. Identical ingredients were mixed for various intervals, cast in a circular tube, then fired in a static test. Mechanical properties were measured and initial moduli were calculated from the initial slope of the S-N curves. A theoretical model was developed using the data to quantitatively configure a quality control procedure. A minimum time for mixing fine and coarse AP particles was identified and was approximated to within a factor of two or three using a viscous dispersion time and the surface areas of the particles. The model could be improved by considering settling time and particle size distribution effects.

Fracture behavior in silicon

The fracture mechanics of crystalline Si are reviewed, together with known techniques for minimizing the occurences of fracture and/or their effects. The fracture toughness (Kic) of Si varies only 10 percent from cell-to-cell and standard values have been established for different types of crystalline Si cells. A critical flaw size of 10-100 microns has been identified, and also pertains to polycrystalline materials. Chemical polishing is known to double the value of Kic, while edge rounding has no effect. Internal stresses, particularly those caused during ribbon growth, do not exceed 10 percent of Kic. External stresses are imposed by the module hardware and the ambient environment. Multiple contacts reduce the effects of cell fracture and series-parallel wiring in modules in arrays ameliorates the effects of single-cell failures. During manufacturing, maintenance of quality control and removal of sheets displaying aberrations can, depending on the costs and the implementation of the array reliability features, result in arrays delivering any desired level of reliability.

A system-level approach to automation research

Automation is the application of self-regulating mechanical and electronic devices to processes that can be accomplished with the human organs of perception, decision, and actuation. The successful application of automation to a system process should reduce man/system interaction and the perceived complexity of the system, or should increase affordability, productivity, quality control, and safety. The expense, time constraints, and risk factors associated with extravehicular activities have led the Automation Technology Branch (ATB), as part of the NASA Automation Research and Technology Program, to investigate the use of robots and teleoperators as automation aids in the context of space operations. The ATB program addresses three major areas: (1) basic research in autonomous operations, (2) human factors research on man-machine interfaces with remote systems, and (3) the integration and analysis of automated systems. This paper reviews the current ATB research in the area of robotics and teleoperators.

Cloud-drift wind estimates during PGGE

Cloud drift winds constitute an important component of the First Global Atmospheric Research Program Experiment data base. Data was generated by far different centers, using somewhat different procedures. Image data transformation to wind vectors is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the differences between the processing techniques employed in each system. The use of cloud drift data by global data assimulation systems is reviewed, including quality control and relative weighting.

Objective analysis and assimilation techniques used for the production of FGGE 3b analyses

A system of seven tables, which cover analysis archiving, observation types, quality control, data assimilation cycles, assimilating models, initialization, and analysis techniques was adopted. The set of prepared tables allows side-by-side comparison of the characteristics of the six data assimilation systems (European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Science, National Meteorological Center, Florida State University, and Naval Environmental Prediction Research Facility) used to produce FGGE IIIb analyses.

The response of numerical weather prediction analysis systems to FGGE 2b data

An intercomparison of analyses of the main PGGE Level IIb data set is presented with three advanced analysis systems. The aims of the work are to estimate the extent and magnitude of the differences between the analyses, to identify the reasons for the differences, and finally to estimate the significance of the differences. Extratropical analyses only are considered. Objective evaluations of analysis quality, such as fit to observations, statistics of analysis differences, and mean fields are discussed. In addition, substantial emphasis is placed on subjective evaluation of a series of case studies that were selected to illustrate the importance of different aspects of the analysis procedures, such as quality control, data selection, resolution, dynamical balance, and the role of the assimilating forecast model. In some cases, the forecast models are used as selective amplifiers of analysis differences to assist in deciding which analysis was more nearly correct in the treatment of particular data.

Dielectric cure monitoring of the 55A filament wound case resin

Studies were conducted to correlate data from dielectric cure monitoring of 55A filament would case resins using the Micromet System II with differential scanning calorimetry and resin strength tests. Strength tests for resin bonding at various time intervals and DSC are standard accepted techniques for monitoriong resin cure cycles. They are time consuming, destructive, and non-continuous. The Micromet System II will yield reliable information on degree of cure and other parameters, which should allow better quality control on filament wound case resin cure.

Investigation of paramagnetic response of metallic epoxies

The paramagnetic properties of epoxies which were impregnated with metal ions were examined as the primary task in this research. A major conclusion was that the quality control of the epoxies was insufficient to permit reliable evaluation. Subsequently, a new set of specimens is being prepared. As an additional task, a new method is investigated for estimating heats of combustion for saturated hydrocarbons. The results of that investigation have shown that the empirical approach is a promising method for on-line measurements.

Development of algorithms for understanding the temporal and spatial variability of the earth's radiation balance

A brief description is given of how temporal and spatial variability in the earth's radiative behavior influences the goals of satellite radiation monitoring systems and how some previous systems have addressed the existing problems. Then, results of some simulations of radiation budget monitoring missions are presented. These studies led to the design of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). A description is given of the temporal and spatial averaging algorithms developed for the ERBE data analysis. These algorithms are intended primarily to produce monthly averages of the net radiant exitance on regional, zonal, and global scales and to provide insight into the regional diurnal variability of radiative parameters such as albedo and long-wave radiant exitance. The algorithms are applied to scanner and nonscanner data for up to three satellites. Modeling of dialy shortwave albedo and radiant exitance with satellite samling that is insufficient to fully account for changing meteorology is discussed in detail. Studies performed during the ERBE mission and software design are reviewed. These studies provide quantitative estimates of the effects of temporally sparse and biased sampling on inferred diurnal and regional radiative parameters. Other topics covered include long-wave diurnal modeling, extraction of a regional monthly net clear-sky radiation budget, the statistical significance of observed diurnal variability, quality control of the analysis, and proposals for validating the results of ERBE time and space averaging.

The real-time use of wind profilers in nowcasting

The program for Regional Observing and Forecasting Services (PROFS) has been using wind profile data in experimental forecast applications for over two years, mostly in the form of real-time color displays on the PROFS forecast workstation. The most ambitious test of the workstation to date, the 1985 PROFS Real-Time Experiment (RT-85), ran from 15 May to 23 August, 1985. The use of wind profiler products during this and previous experiments is described. Data from the experimental profiler network in Colorado and from the profiler in Oklahoma are in the form of hourly averages. Arriving data frequently contain errors whose origins range from interference by aircraft in the beams to highway truck traffic. Most of the irregularities are apparent through visual inspection of profiler wind observations plotted on a time-height cross section, but this method of quality control is inadequate if the intended uses of the data involve numerical calculations.
