QCD hidden-color hexadiquark in the core of nuclei

Hidden-color configurations are a key prediction of QCD with important physical consequences. In this work we examine a QCD color-singlet configuration in nuclei formed by combining six scalar [ud] diquarks in a strongly bound SU (3) C channel. The resulting hexadiquark state is a charge-2, spin-0, baryon number-4, isospin-0, color-singlet state. It contributes to alpha clustering in light nuclei and to the additional binding energy not saturated by ordinary nuclear forces in as well as the alpha-nuclei sequence of interest for nuclear astrophysics. We show that the strongly bound combination of six scalar isospin-0 [ud] diquarks within the nuclear wave function - relative to free nucleons - provides a natural explanation of the EMC effect measured by the CLAS collaboration's comparison of nuclear parton distribution function ratios for a large range of nuclei. Overall, these experiments confirmed that the EMC effect; i.e., the distortion of quark distributions within nuclei, is dominantly identified with the dynamics of neutron-proton (“isophobic”) short-range correlations within the nuclear wave function rather than proton-proton or neutron-neutron correlations.

Search for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, or ZH boson pairs in the all-jets final state in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

A search for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, or ZH boson pairs in the all-jets final state is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector in 2016–2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . The search is sensitive to resonances with masses between 1.3 and 6 TeV, decaying to bosons that are highly Lorentz-boosted such that each of the bosons forms a single large-radius jet. Machine learning techniques are employed to identify such jets. No significant excess over the estimated standard model background is observed. A maximum local significance of 3.6 standard deviations, corresponding to a global significance of 2.3 standard deviations, is observed at masses of 2.1 and 2.9 TeV. In a heavy vector triplet model, spin-1 Z' and W' resonances with masses below 4.8 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL). These limits are the most stringent to date. In a bulk graviton model, spin-2 gravitons and spin-0 radions with masses below 1.4 and 2.7 TeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% CL. Production of heavy resonances through vector boson fusion is constrained with upper cross section limits at 95% CL as low as 0.1 fb.

[Fe 4 S 4 ] cubane in sulfite reductases: new insights into bonding properties and reactivity

The dissimilatory sulfite reductase enzyme has very characteristic active site where the substrate binds to an iron site, ligated by a siroheme macrocycle and a thiol directly connected to a [Fe 4 S 4 ] cluster. This arrangement gives the enzyme remarkable efficiency in reducing sulfite and nitrite all the way to hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. For the first time we present a theoretical study where substrate binding modalities and activation are elucidated using active site models containing proton supply side chains and the [Fe 4 S 4 ] cluster. Density functional theory (DFT) was deployed in conjunction with the energy decomposition scheme (as implemented in AMS), the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and conceptual DFT (cDFT) descriptors. We quantified the role of the electrostatic interactions inside the active site created by the side chains as well as the influence of the [Fe4S4] cluster on the substrate binding. Furthermore, using conceptual DFT results we shed light of the activation process, thus, laying foundation for further mechanistic studies. We found that the bonding of the ligands to the iron complex is dominated by electrostatic interactions, but the presence of the [Fe 4 S 4 ] cubane leads to substantial changes in electronic interaction. The spin state of the cubane, however, affects the binding energy only marginally. The conceptual DFT results show that the presence of the [Fe 4 S 4 ] cubane affects the reactivity of the active site as it is involved in electron transfer. This is corroborated by an increase in the electrophilicity index, thus making the active site more prone to react with the ligands. The interaction energies between the ligand and the siroheme group are also increased upon the presence of the cubane group, thus, suggesting that the siroheme group is not an innocent spectator but plays an active role in the reactivity of the dSIR active site.

β -delayed neutron spectroscopy of Co 70 , 72 ground-state and isomeric-state decays

Here, the β-decaying states of 70,72 Co were studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the VANDLE neutron time-of-flight array. The (6 - ,7 - )⁢β-decaying state in 70 Co is near-spherical with a lifetime of 113 ± 7 ms, and the low-spin (1 + ,2 + )⁢β-decaying state is postulated to be the prolate deformed ground state with a lifetime of 508 ± 7 ms. Both decay predominantly to the bound states of 70 Ni. For the first time neutron-emissions from neutron unbound states from both the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + )⁢β decays were measured. Even with the low statistics data, we were able to disentangle the neutron emission from both decays, which enabled a determination of β-decay strength above the neutron separation energy of 70 Ni. Neutron emission probabilities were measured to be 7.1 ± 1.5% and 9.4 ± 1.7%, respectively, for the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + ) decays. The decay pattern of the 70 Co is driven by neutron f 5/2 to proton f 7/2 Gamow-Teller transformation. The observed population of neutron unbound states is attributed to the conversion of p 1/2 and p 3/2 neutrons to p 3/2 and p 1/2 protons excited across the Z = 28 closed shell.

Potential absence of observed π2 linear-chain structures in 14O via 10C(α,α) resonances scattering

Background: The preference for light nuclear systems to coagulate into -particle clusters has been well-studied. The possibility of a linear chain configuration of -particles would allow for a new way to study this phenomenon. Purpose: A rotational band of states in C has been claimed showing a linear chain structure. The mirror system, O, has been studied here to examine how this linear chain structure is affected by replacing the valence neutrons with protons. Method: A beam of C was incident into a chamber filled with He:CO gas with the tracks recorded inside the TexAT Time Projection Chamber and the recoil -particles detected by a silicon detector array to measure the cross section. Results: The experimental cross section was compared with previous studies and fit using R-Matrix theory with the previously-observed O states being transformed to the C using mirror symmetry. The measured cross section does not replicate the claimed states, with the predicted cross section exceeding that observed at several energies and angles. Conclusion: A series of possibilities are highlighted with the most likely being that the originally-seen C states did not constitute a rotational band with a potentially incorrect spin assignment due to the limitations of the angular correlation method with non-zero spin particles. The work highlights the difficulties in measuring broad resonances corresponding to a linear chain state in a high level density.

Observation of Λ Hyperon Local Polarization in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured in proton-lead (𝑝-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data were obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186.0 ± 6.5 nb −1 . A significant azimuthal dependence of the hyperon polarization, characterized by the second-order Fourier sine coefficient 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 , is observed. The 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 values decrease as a function of charged particle multiplicity, but increase with transverse momentum. A hydrodynamic model that describes the observed 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 values in nucleus-nucleus collisions by introducing vorticity effects does not reproduce either the sign or the magnitude of the 𝑝-Pb results. These observations pose a challenge to the current theoretical implementation of spin polarization in heavy ion collisions and offer new insights into the origin of spin polarization in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ final state using large-area jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the resonant production of a pair of standard model-like Higgs bosons using data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The final state consists of two b quark-antiquark pairs. The search is conducted in the region of phase space where at least one of the pairs is highly Lorentz-boosted and is reconstructed as a single large-area jet. The other pair may be either similarly merged or resolved, the latter reconstructed using two b-tagged jets. The data are found to be consistent with standard model processes and are interpreted as 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross sections and the branching fractions of the spin-0 radion and the spin-2 bulk graviton that arise in warped extradimensional models. The limits set are in the range 9.74–0.29 fb and 4.94–0.19 fb for a narrow radion and a graviton, respectively, with masses between 1 and 3 TeV. For a radion and for a bulk graviton with widths 10% of their masses, the limits are in the range 12.5–0.35 fb and 8.23–0.23 fb, respectively, for the same masses. These limits result in the exclusion of a narrow-width graviton with a mass below 1.2 TeV, and of narrow and 10%-width radions with masses below 2.6, and 2.9 TeV, respectively.

Engineering Magnetic Anisotropy and Emergent Multidirectional Soft Ferromagnetism in Ultrathin Freestanding LaMnO 3 Films

We report the combination of small coercive fields and weak magnetic anisotropy makes soft ferromagnetic films extremely useful for nanoscale devices that need to easily switch spin directions. However, soft ferromagnets are relatively rare, particularly in ultrathin films with thicknesses of a few nanometers or less. We have synthesized large-area, high-quality, ultrathin freestanding LaMnO 3 films on Si and found unexpected soft ferromagnetism along both the in-plane and out-of-plane directions when the film thickness was reduced to 4 nm. We argue that the vanishing magnetic anisotropy between the two directions is a consequence of two coexisting magnetic easy axes in different atomic layers of the LaMnO 3 film. Spectroscopy measurements reveal a change in Mn valence from 3+ in the film interior to approximately 2+ at the surfaces where considerable hydrogen infiltration occurs due to the water dissolving process. First-principles calculations show that protonation of LaMnO 3 decreases valence and Our the Mn switches the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane as the Mn valence approaches 2+ from its 3+ bulk value. Our work demonstrates that ultrathin freestanding films can exhibit functional properties that are absent in homogeneous materials, concomitant with their convenient compatibility with Si-based devices.

Search for pair production of heavy particles decaying to a top quark and a gluon in the lepton+jets final state in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$

A search is presented for the pair production of new heavy resonances, each decaying into a top quark (t) or antiquark and a gluon (g). The analysis uses data recorded with the CMS detector from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Events with one muon or electron, multiple jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. After using a deep neural network to enrich the data sample with signal-like events, distributions in the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all reconstructed objects are analyzed in the search for a signal. No significant deviations from the standard model prediction are found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction squared for the pair production of excited top quarks in the t* → tg decay channel. The upper limits range from 120 to 0.8 fb for a t* with spin-1/2 and from 15 to 1.0 fb for a t* with spin-3/2. These correspond to mass exclusion limits up to 1050 and 1700 GeV for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 t* particles, respectively. These are the most stringent limits to date on the existence of t* → tg resonances.

Primary donor triplet states of Photosystem I and II studied by Q-band pulse ENDOR spectroscopy

The photoexcited triplet state of the “primary donors” in the two photosystems of oxygenic photosynthesis has been investigated by means of electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) at Q-band (34 GHz). The data obtained represent the first set of 1 H hyperfine coupling tensors of the 3 P700 triplet state in PSI and expand the existing data set for 3 P680. We achieved an extensive assignment of the observed electron-nuclear hyperfine coupling constants (hfcs) corresponding to the methine α-protons and the methyl group β-protons of the chlorophyll (Chl) macrocycle. The data clearly confirm that in both photosystems the primary donor triplet is located on one specific monomeric Chl at cryogenic temperature. In comparison to previous transient ENDOR and pulse ENDOR experiments at standard X-band (9–10 GHz), the pulse Q-band ENDOR spectra demonstrate both improved signal-to-noise ratio and increased resolution. The observed ENDOR spectra for 3 P700 and 3 P680 differ in terms of the intensity loss of lines from specific methyl group protons, which is explained by hindered methyl group rotation produced by binding site effects. Contact analysis of the methyl groups in the PSI crystal structure in combination with the ENDOR analysis of 3 P700 suggests that the triplet is located on the Chl a' (P A ) in PSI. The results also provide additional evidence for the localization of 3 P680 on the accessory Chl D1 in PSII.

Baryon–Antibaryon Photoproduction off the Proton

The GlueX Experiment at Jefferson Lab uses linearly polarized photon beam to study the photoproduction of light mesons and baryons off a proton target with unprecedented precision. We have observed p¯p photoproduction and, for the first time, ?¯? photoproduction from thresholds up to E = 11.6 GeV. We reproduce the observed kinematic distributions with a phenomenological model that includes t-channel Regge exchange and double Regge exchange. The model uses few parameters to match all the kinematic spectra via an optimization algorithm developed specifically for this purpose. We report the total cross sections of the two reactions, as well as differential cross sections with respect to various momentum transfers and invariant mass spectra of p¯p, ?¯?, p¯? systems which show enhancements right above production thresholds. Furthermore, the beam asymmetries of the p¯p system are extracted from the GlueX data to further probe the nature of the t-channel Regge exchanges. We also report preliminary measurements of the spin polarizations of the individual hyperons. No prominent resonance structure was found in these reaction channels, but the angular distributions and the correlation of longitudinal momenta indicate the existence of multiple production mechanisms. Besides a dominant forward peak in the polar angle of the baryon-antibaryon pair in t-channel production, we see wide-angle antibaryon distributions different from that of the baryon. In the hyperon channel, we see a clear separation between the photoproduction of the ?¯?, p¯? systems.

Sensitivity of EDM experiments in paramagnetic atoms and molecules to hadronic CP violation

Experiments searching for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron d e utilize atomic/molecular states with one or more uncompensated electron spins, and these paramagnetic systems have recently achieved remarkable sensitivity to d e . If the source of CP violation resides entirely in the hadronic sector, the two-photon exchange processes between electrons and the nucleus induce CP-odd semileptonic interactions, parametrised by the Wilson coefficient C SP , and provide the dominant source of EDMs in paramagnetic systems instead of d e . We evaluate the C SP coefficients induced by the leading hadronic sources of CP violation, namely nucleon EDMs and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings, by calculating the nucleon-number-enhanced CP-odd nuclear scalar polarisability, employing chiral perturbation theory at the nucleon level and the Fermi-gas model for the nucleus. This allows us to translate the ACME EDM limits from paramagnetic ThO into novel independent constraints on the QCD theta term |$\bar θ$| < 3 × 10 –8 , proton EDM |d p | < 2 × 10 –23 e cm, isoscalar CP-odd pion-nucleon coupling |$\bar g$$^{(1)}_{πNN}$| < 4 × 10 –10 , and color EDMs of quarks |$\tilde d$ u -$\tilde $d d | < 2 × 10 –24 cm. We note that further experimental progress with EDM experiments in paramagnetic systems may allow them to rival the sensitivity of EDM experiments with neutrons and diamagnetic atoms to these quantities.

Measurement of differential cross sections and charge ratios for t -channel single top quark production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\,\text {Te}\text {V}$

A measurement is presented of differential cross sections for t-channel single top quark and antiquark production in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$ by the CMS experiment at the LHC. From a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, events containing one muon or electron and two or three jets are analysed. The cross section is measured as a function of the top quark transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}} $), rapidity, and polarisation angle, the charged lepton $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ and rapidity, and the $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ of the $\text {W}{}{}$ boson from the top quark decay. In addition, the charge ratio is measured differentially as a function of the top quark, charged lepton, and $\text {W}{}{}$ boson kinematic observables. The results are found to be in agreement with standard model predictions using various next-to-leading-order event generators and sets of parton distribution functions. Additionally, the spin asymmetry, sensitive to the top quark polarisation, is determined from the differential distribution of the polarisation angle at parton level to be $0.440 \pm 0.070$, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Search for Higgs boson pair production in the $ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}{\textrm{W}}^{+}{\textrm{W}}^{-} $ decay mode in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for Higgs boson pair (HH) production with one Higgs boson decaying to two bottom quarks and the other to two W bosons are presented. The search is done using proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018. The final states considered include at least one leptonically decaying W boson. No evidence for the presence of a signal is observed and corresponding upper limits on the HH production cross section are derived. The limit on the inclusive cross section of the nonresonant HH production, assuming that the distributions of kinematic observables are as expected in the standard model (SM), is observed (expected) to be 14 (18) times the value predicted by the SM, at 95% confidence level. The limits on the cross section are also presented as functions of various Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and anomalous Higgs boson coupling scenarios. In addition, limits are set on the resonant HH production via spin-0 and spin-2 resonances within the mass range 250–900 GeV.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Probing the core of the strong nuclear interaction

The strong nuclear interaction between nucleons (protons and neutrons) is the effective force that holds the atomic nucleus together. This force stems from fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons (the constituents of nucleons) that are described by the equations of quantum chromodynamics. However, as these equations cannot be solved directly, nuclear interactions are described using simplified models, which are well constrained at typical inter-nucleon distances but not at shorter distances. This limits our ability to describe high-density nuclear matter such as that in the cores of neutron stars. Here we use high-energy electron scattering measurements that isolate nucleon pairs in short-distance, high-momentum configurations, accessing a kinematical regime that has not been previously explored by experiments, corresponding to relative momenta between the pair above 400 mega electron volts per c (c, speed of light in vacuum). As the relative momentum between two nucleons increases and their separation thereby decreases, we observe a transition from a spin-dependent tensor force to a predominantly spin-independent scalar force. These results demonstrate the usefulness of using such measurements to study the nuclear interaction at short distances and also support the use of point-like nucleon models with two- and three-body effective interactions to describe nuclear systems up to densities several times higher than the central density of the nucleus.

Search for singly and pair-produced leptoquarks coupling to third-generation fermions in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$=13 TeV

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. We consider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge -1/3e coupling to a top quark plus a tau lepton ( t τ ) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino ( b ν ), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling to t ν or b τ . These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in the measurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures t τ ν b and t τ ν are probed, using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at s = 13 TeV and that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98–1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling λ to a lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. These are the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of leptoquarks in this scenario.

Spontaneous dewetting of a perfluoropolyether

Eight different production lots of a commercial perfluoropolyether (PFPE) based on hexafluoropropene oxide (HFPO) were applied to polished metal surfaces by spinning. One of the lots repeatedly dewetted from a clean 440C steel surface, forming droplets on the surface, whereas the other seven did not dewet. This dewetting phenomenon also repeatedly occurred on 2024 aluminum and 1018 steel, but not on copper or gold. Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (mu-FTIR) was used to determine thickness and uniformity of the PFPE films. The dewetting lot was found to dewet from 440C steel at a film thickness greater than 520 A. A portion of the dewetting lot was heated at 316 C for 12 days in the presence of oxygen and M-50 steel. This fluid did not dewet. Sequentially, samples of the dewetting lot were filtered either with an alumina or a silica cartridge which can remove polar impurities. Neither of the filtered samples dewetted from 440C steel. It was concluded that an unknown impurity, both thermally labile and polar, present at very low concentration and undetected by our analytical techniques (FTIR, proton NMR, or F-19 NMR), was responsible for the dewetting phenomenon.

New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data.
