Code Demonstration: Approximation of nearly-periodic symplectic maps via structure-preserving neural networks
In this notebook, we use the symplectic gyroceptron architecture from [Duruisseaux et al., 2022] to learn a surrogate map for the nearly-periodic symplectic flow map associated to a nearly-periodic Hamiltonian system composed of two nonlinearly coupled oscillators, where one of them oscillates significantly faster than the other: $\Big\lbrace$ $ {\dot{q}_1 = p_1 \hspace{5mm} \dot{p}_1 = -q_1 - \epsilon \partial_{q1}U(q_1 , q_2 )} \atop {\dot{q}_2 = \epsilon p_2 \hspace{4mm} \dot{p}_2 = -\epsilon q_2 - \epsilon \partial_{q2}U(q_1 , q_2 )}$. These equations of motion are the Hamilton's equations associated to the Hamiltonian $H_{\epsilon}(q_1,q_2,p_1,p_2)=\frac{1}{2}(q^2_1+p^2_1)+\frac{1}{2}\epsilon(q^2_2+p^2_2)+\epsilon$$U(q_1,q_2)$.

Preservation of the High Quality Factor and Accelerating Gradient of Nb3Sn-coated Cavity During Pair Assembly
Two CEBAF 5-cell accelerator cavities have been coated with Nb3Sn film using the vapor diffusion technique. One cavity was coated in the Jefferson Lab Nb3Sn cavity coating system, and the other in the Fermilab Nb3Sn coating system. Both cavities were measured at 4 K and 2 K in the vertical dewar test in each lab and then assembled into a cavity pair at Jefferson Lab. Previous attempts to assemble Nb3Sn cavities into a cavity pair degraded the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn-coated cavities. This contribution discusses the efforts to identify and mitigate the pair assembly challenges and will present the results of the vertical tests before and after pair assembly. Notably, one of the cavities reached the highest gradient above 80 mT in the vertical test after the pair assembly.
Direct Measurement of Light Scattering and Quantum State Preservation from Non-Specular Materials [Slides]
Conclusions from Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) Measurements: Mirrors are specular and have consistent reflectance over a range of angles. The measured power of the reflected light was consistent for all power meter positions; Kapton had a similar specular response as the mirror (FWHM), but displayed varying power levels for the different power meter positions (much like the Anodized AI and the Solar Cells); The Solar Cells had very high loss consistent with a material that is supposed to absorb light, but still exhibited specular behavior for FWHM; The Anodized AI had the most diffuse (highest FWHM) reflectance and low BRDF amplitude; Also tried to measure the BRDF Aeroglaze (a common satellite coating) but the power meter was not sensitive enough. To the eye, this material seemed very absorbent and any reflection would be very diffuse.
Preserving Superconvergence of Spectral Elements for Curved Domains [Slides]
Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Spectral Element Methods (SEM) are crucial for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) on complex geometries. SEM offers superior accuracy due to potential superconvergence for simple domains. Challenges persist for domains with curved boundaries, restricting SEM’s advantages in real-world applications. A proposed solution is the introduction of a novel strategy to enhance accuracy and maintain superconvergence of SEM in curved domains. The strategy includes a mesh-generation procedure with geometrically refined elements near curved boundaries and a post-processing phase using the Adaptive Extended Stencil Finite Element Method (AES-FEM). The method, named AES-FEM post-processed Spectral Element Method (ApSEM), aligns the accuracy of non-tensor-product elements with superconvergent spectral elements.
