Aeroelastic Modeling and Full-Scale Loads Measurements for Investigation of Single-Axis PV Tracker Wind-Driven Dynamic Instabilities

While wind tunnel testing and proprietary industry modeling tools have been used for years to design and develop PV tracker systems, wind induced dynamic failures are becoming more prevalent and high visibility. Designers and manufactures have reacted by developing new systems or add-on products to improve system dynamics adding to overall system costs. To better understand the physics and aeroelastic behavior that leads to dynamic instabilities NREL researches have taken up a first of a kind study to both develop open source aeroelastic modeling tools and measure tracker loads on a single axis full-scale tracker system at a high wind site. These modeling tools can simulate the fluid-structure interaction driving torsional instabilities under a wide range of turbulent inflow conditions and stow angles. The results of these simulations reveal the flow features associated with panel rotation and the induced loads in the structure. The experimental load measurements can be used to validate models and provide a quantifiable understanding of tracker dynamics, critical loads paths, identify instability markers, inform resilient design, and suggest the most favorable stow approach.

Enabling Interoperability on PV Inverters Using IEC 61850

Inverter based distributed energy resources are integrated into distribution system at a fast pace. Distribution management systems, microgrid controllers, and other distributed assets need to communicate with each other for sensing and control of the different assets. Interoperability is critical to the ease of data exchange between different assets. This presentation will provide a background on interoperability and a laboratory implementation using IEC 61850. Specifically, this presentation will discuss the use of IEC 61850 7-420 to enable interoperability in PV inverter.

Preparing Solar Photovoltaic Systems Against Storms. Pre-Storm Solar PV Checklist: Distributed Ground-Mounted Systems

Through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has used subject matter experts to compile a set of checklists to help Puerto Rico and other communities prepare for storms. Renewable energy and distributed energy systems have the potential to provide power to neighborhoods, vulnerable residents, and certain facilities within a community, if those systems are designed to provide power during a grid disruption. The storm-hardening checklists provide storm preparation actions that can increase the chances that solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are available when communities need them most.

Moisture Ingress Models of Film Capacitors in PV Inverters

This presentation discusses the methodology for developing moisture ingress models for components inside a PV inverter. This method uses time series-based analyses for moisture ingress unlike a single maximum temperature, humidity, and voltage setpoint used in Hallberg-Peck equations. Experiments were performed for determination of moisture ingress time to estimate moisture ingress in and out of the capacitor device under normal and extreme temperatures and RH conditions.

Life after 30 years - a PV system in Colorado

The PV system consisted of 155 monocrystalline Si Arco M53 panels, installed in 1987. 80 were installed on a fixed tilt rack, and 75 on 5 separate dual-axis passive trackers. The system was decommissioned in 2017 due a campus re-design and building expansion at the Platte River Power Authority (PPRA) site. Prior to decommissioning a site visit established the following failure type observations: EVA browning (100%), cracked cells (60%), and cracked wires or grommets (9%, or more if replacements were made selectively on cracked parts). EVA browning is typical in modules of this vintage, whereas the occurrence of so many cracked cells is surprising and is likely weather-related. The fairly frequent occurrence of cracked wires and grommets serves as a reminder that accelerated testing of these components is important for goals of low-cost 50-year energy generation. In smaller numbers, thermal effects (7%), bent frames (1%), and cell corrosion (<1%) were observed. A sample of 20 modules was selected and brought to NREL for in-depth characterization. Because baseline measurements were not available using the nameplate rating, which can be inaccurate, revealed a mean module sample degradation of 0.7 %/year. Sporadic production data during the 30 years determined a system degradation rate closer to 1.2 %/year. Subsequently, four of these modules were re-mounted outdoors at NREL and are now approaching a total lifetime of 34 years.

Predicting Wind Loading and Instability in Solar Tracking PV Arrays

Wind loading and the fluctuating pressure loads it creates on PV panel surfaces are associated with multiple degradation mechanisms and failures. Modest wind speeds create reversing loads that can initiate cell cracks and weather cracked cells. Stronger wind speeds and extreme weather events can lead to larger scale forces and the aerodynamic instability known as torsional galloping. All these effects are dependent on the complex coupling between wind speed, panel orientation, and a myriad of other hardware and site-specific factors. In this work, we present the latest developments from our work to build an open-source, high-performance computing (HPC) fluid dynamics solver to predict and mitigate these effects. This simulation package allows users to easily specify different array layouts, solar-tracking angles, panel geometries, and weather conditions before automatically generating a refined computational mesh and solving for the unsteady loading on each panel surface. Small domains (e.g., a single panel row in isolation) can be solved on a modern laptop, while larger domains or very high-fidelity studies can be solved on distributed or HPC resources with minimal modifications to the underlying problem specification. We present preliminary case studies obtained using this simulation package and highlight how increased wind speeds combined with sub-optimal tracking angles can exacerbate degradation drivers.
