Irradiation of linear polyethylene - Partitioning between sol and gel.

Investigation of the importance of chain-scission processes and of the applicability of the general theory of network formation to polyethylene with respect to critical conditions for gelation, using molecular weight fractions of linear polyethylene irradiated at 133 C. The partitioning between sol and gel was found to adhere to the theory just beyond the gel point. Deviations from theory occurred as the irradiation dosage was increased. It was concluded that main-chain scission at the temperatures concerned is not a significant process.

Creep-fatigue analysis by strain-range partitioning.

The framework of a new method is outlined for treating creep-fatigue behavior of metals. Inelastic strain-ranges are partitioned into the components of (1) completely reversed plasticity, (2) tensile plasticity reversed by compressive creep, or tensile creep reversed by compressive plasticity, and (3) completely reversed creep. Each of these components is shown to be related to cyclic life by a Manson-Coffin type power-law equation. A linear life fraction rule is used to combine the damaging effects of the individual components enabling the prediction of life. Test results are presented for a 2.25 Cr-1 Mo steel as well as limited information for a Type 316 stainless steel.

Creep-fatigue analysis by Strainrange Partitioning

Strainrange Partitioning provides unifying framework for characterizing high-temperature, low-cycle, creep-fatigue properties of metals and alloys. Method offers distinct advantage to designers of immediately providing reliable upper and lower bounds on cyclic life for any type of inelastic strain cycle that may be encountered in service.

The challenge to unify treatment of high-temperature fatigue - A partisan proposal based on strainrange partitioning

The strainrange partitioning concept divides the imposed strain into four basic ranges involving time-dependent and time-independent components. It is shown that some of the results presented at the symposium can be better correlated on the basis of this concept than by alternative methods. It is also suggested that methods of data generation and analysis can be helpfully guided by this approach. Potential applicability of the concept to the treatment of frequency and hold-time effects, environmental influence, crack initiation and growth, thermal fatigue, and code specifications are briefly considered. A required experimental program is outlined.

Partitioning of potassium between silicates and sulphide melts - Experiments relevant to the earth's core.

The partitioning of potassium between roedderite, K2Mg5Si12O30 and an Fe-FeS melt was investigated at temperatures about 40 C above the Fe-FeS eutectic. Roedderite was considered a prime candidate for one of the potassium-bearing phases in the primitive earth because roedderite and merrihueite are the only two silicates containing essential potassium which have been identified in stony meteorites. Application of the results to a primitive chondritic earth is discussed, and it is concluded that extraction of most of the earth's potassium into the Fe-FeS core would occur under the conditions in the early earth.-

Energy partitioning of gaseous ions in an electric field.

The partitioning of ion energy among thermal energy, drift energy, and random-field energy is studied by solution of the Boltzmann equation. An expansion in powers of the square of the electric field strength is obtained by Kihara's method. Numerical calculations for several ion-neutral force laws show that Wannier's constant mean-free-time model gives a reasonable first approximation. The formal extension to multicomponent mixtures is also given. The matrix elements obtained are tabulated, and can be used to study the field dependence of other moments of the ion-distribution function.

Partitioning of potassium between silicates and sulphide melts: Experiements relevant to the earth's core

The partitioning of potassium between roedderite, K2Mg5Si12O30 and an Fe-FeS melt was investigaged at temperatures about 40 C above the Fe-FeS eutectic. Roedderite was considered a prime candidate for one of the potassium-bearing phases in the primitive earth because roedderite and merrihueite are the only two silicates containing essential potassium which have been identified in stony meteorites. A mean K2S/FeS weight ratio of (3.340 + or - 0.015) x 0.001 was determined in these experiments; a K2S/FeS weight ratio of about 0.01 would be sufficient to extract all potassium in a chondritic earth into the core. Application of these results to a primitive chondritic earth is discussed and it is concluded that extraction of most of the earth's potassium into the Fe-FeS core would occur under the conditions in the early earth.

Partition function for a two dimensional plasma in the random phase approximation

The partition function for a two-dimensional plasma is evaluated within the random phase approximation. The periodic boundary conditions are fully taken into account by including the periodic image interactions. In the guiding-center limit, the negative temperature threshold energy is evaluated, and a value different from previous calculations results. When an identical random phase evaluated, and a value different from previous calculations results. When an identical random phase evaluation is applied to the finite gyroradius plasma, the Salzberg-Prager-May equation of state is recovered.

The partitioned strainrange fatigue behavior of coated and uncoated MAR-M-302 at 1000 C (1832 F) in ultrahigh vacuum

Elevated temperature (1000 C (1832 F)) vacuum fatigue tests have been conducted on uncoated and aluminide (PWA 45) coated cobalt-base MAR-M-302 alloy with the four different types of thermalmechanical reversed inelastic strain cycles (wave shapes) defined by the method of strainrange partitioning. Results of these tests indicated two major conclusions. First, there was no significant influence of the aluminide coating on the thermal-mechanical fatigue life of the MAR-M-302 alloy. Second, variations in the type of thermal-mechanical fatigue cycle applied caused significant variations of fatigue life for both coated and uncoated material. The longest lives were achieved with sigma sub pp type cycling, while the sigma sub cc cycle caused a reduction of fatigue life of about 1/2 order of magnitude with respect to the sigma sub pp life. The sigma sub cp type cycle caused a life reduction of between 1-1/2 and 2 orders of magnitude relative to the sigma sub pp life, while the sigma sub pc type cycle provided a fatigue life which appeared to be comparable to that generated by the sigma sub cc cycle.

Matrix isolation technique for the study of some factors affecting the partitioning of trace elements

The factors that affect the preferred positions of cations in ionic solid solutions were investigated utilizing vibrational spectroscopy. Solid solutions of the sulfate and chromate ions codoped with La(+3) and Ca(+2) in a KBr host lattice were examined as a function of the polyvalent cation concentration. The cation-anion pairing process was found to be random for Ca(+2), whereas the formation of La(+3)-SO4(-2) ion pairs with a C2 sub v bonding geometry is highly preferential to any type of La(+3)-CrO4(-2) ion pair formation. The relative populations of ion pair site configurations are discussed in terms of an energy-entropy competition model which can be applied to the partition of trace elements during magmatic processes.

Partition function for a two-dimensional plasma in the random-phase approximation

The partition function for a two-dimensional plasma is evaluated within the random-phase approximation. The periodic boundary conditions are taken fully into account by including the periodic image interactions. In the guiding-center limit, the 'negative temperature' threshold energy is evaluated, and a value different from previous calculations results. When an identical random-phase evaluation is applied to the finite-gyroradius plasma, the Salzberg-Prager-May equation of state is recovered.

Digital simulation by partitioning and uncoupling the system model

The present work reviews state variable simulation and then proposes a technique for simulation of nonlinear time varying systems by partitioning the system state variable model and uncoupling the resulting subsystem models so that the linear time-invariant ones can be simulated by state variable solution. Computational requirements and computer time are shown to be reduced. The method does, however, introduce an integration error due to the treatment of the intercoupling terms between the subsystems as inputs which are assumed constant over a computation interval. A fictitious sampler is thereby introduced, which is then derived in the form of a state variable error model. The application of this method in a simulation error analysis for a Saturn V attitude control system model and the simulation of a detailed nonlinear, single-axis model of the LST fine pointing control system is described.

Strainrange Partitioning - A tool for characterizing high-temperature low-cycle fatigue

The basic concepts of Strainrange Partitioning are reviewed, with particular reference to the areas requiring expanded verification. A cooperative program is proposed for achieving this broader verification through the additional experience provided by the participants in this program. The suggested program includes verification of the four basic life relationships (for PP, CC, PC, and CP type inelastic strainranges) for a variety of materials chosen by the participating organizations. The four relationships are then used in conjunction with the Interaction Damage Rule to predict the cyclic lives of tests involving various combinations of the basic strainrange components. The testing program also includes evaluation of the degree of insensitivity of these relationships to temperature as well as their utility in representing bounds on life.

A study of Pb-204 partition in lunar samples using terrestrial and meteoritic analogues

Pb-204, Bi, Tl, and Zn have been measured in Apollo 16 samples and Apollo 17 orange soil. These data in addition to already reported Apollo 14 and 15 Pb-204 results and literature data are used to support the Pb-204-metallic phase coherence. The partition of Pb-204 into very fine metallic grains appears to be the result of an impact process rather than metal segregation in a magma.
