Fast Neutron Evaluations for Advanced Lead Systems [Slides]

This presentation touches on fast neutron evaluations for advanced lead systems. This lecture covers project goals to evaluate lead (Pb) isotopes with a focus on improving predictive capabilities of fast systems. Additionally, the project sets out to benchmark available critical and shielding experiments with sensitivity to Pb and utilize RPI Quasi-Differential Scattering experiment for scattering reactions. This project will perform Resolved Resonance Region (RRR) and fast region evaluations for natural Pb isotopes with differential data on EXchange FORmat for experimental numerical nuclear reaction data (EXFOR) and ultimately will submit evaluations to the ENDF/B-VIII.1 library.

Analysis methods for quantifying Xe-127 samples from the UNESE project

In the Underground Nuclear Explosions Signatures Experiment (UNESE) radioactive 37 Ar and 127 Xe were used as tracers in subsurface migration experiments. As part of the experiment, methods were developed to quantify 127 Xe via β-γ coincidence spectroscopy. Later examination of the results highlighted a weakness of this analysis method in samples with no 127 Xe present, so a reanalysis of samples was performed to identify those which were falsely identified as having 127 Xe present. Ongoing work to develop a new analysis method with targeted regions of interest is also described. Measurements were also performed to quantify the concentration of 127 Xe and 37 Ar which were injected as part of UNESE Phase 2. A best value for the concentration of 37 Ar and 127 Xe was determined and reported here for use in future analyses of the UNESE Phase 2 results.

Trade Study of Nondestructive Assay Technologies

The purpose of this report is to summarize the capabilities of currently existing NDA technologies that can be applied to holdup measurements. Cataloguing the strengths and weaknesses of the existing state of the art is a necessary step towards setting goals for new technology development. The NDA technologies evaluated in this report include gamma imaging, non-imaging gamma detectors, and neutron coincidence counting. These technologies were chosen based on their potential for technological improvement or to be applied in different settings. Each technology will be analyzed on a set of evaluation criteria chosen to represent the most salient features of a detector system for holdup measurements. These criteria include sensitivity, energy resolution, angular resolution (for imaging technologies only), ease of use, and cost.

Demonstrating and Expanding DRiFT’s Helium-3 Detector Response Capabilities [Slides]

Helium-3 tubes are an efficient way to detect neutrons after they have thermalized by polyethylene. They are often arranged in rings to perform coincidence counting. Applications include nuclear safeguards, treaty verification, and emergency response. DRiFT has the ability to simulate pile-up, room return, and end effects. A new feature determines real and accidental correlated counts. The next steps include DRiFT 2.0 released as executable, continued demonstration of gas module capabilities, and semiconductor module under a development.

Spin-squeezing for improving optical quantum sensors [Slides]

Spin-squeezing brief overview: Very high levels were achieved in various experiments; In the field of magnetometry, a very moderate spin squeezing was demonstrated (Romalis, Polzik, etc.); At some conditions, significant improvement is possible and this motivates our project; We proposed a significant spin squeezing demonstration for atomic magnetometry.

Evaluating the 238 U PFNS Including Chi-Nu Experimental Data

This report documents an evaluation of 238 U prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) which is a deliverable for a FY2024 Q4 NCSP (Nuclear Criticality Safety Program) milestone. This evaluation is new; its prior input is based on extended Los Alamos and exciton models implemented in the code CoH. Experimental covariances were estimated for five experimental data sets. One of these data sets that was measured by the Chi-Nu team of LANL and LLNL. It covers the 238 U PFNS for continuous incident-neutron energies of 1–20 MeV and outgoing-neutron energies from 10 keV– 10 MeV with high precision. Contrary to Chi-Nu data, previous data sets were measured in a limited energy range. The resulting evaluated data correspond well to the experimental PFNS taken into account for the evaluation. The evaluated PFNS also produce average mean energies in agreement with associated Chi-Nu data. If one uses the new evaluated data to predict the neutron multiplication factor, k eff , of the Flattop, Flattop-Pu and BigTen ICSBEP critical assemblies (which all have thick reflectors with high percentages of 238 U), the differences of simulated values compared to those using ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 is modest (less than 25 pcm). In addition to that, the new PFNS predict on average 238 U LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra slightly better than ENDF/BVIIII.0 and ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 PFNS. The differences are, however, well within the experimental uncertainties.

In-situ Synthesis of PuCl 3 and Corresponding Raman and Density Functional Theory Vibrational Modes

The experimental and calculated Raman spectrum of PuCl 3 has been reported for the first time. PuCl 3 is a primary species found in plutonium metal refinement, specifically in pyrochemical salt processes including multicycle direct oxide reduction, metal chlorination, and electrorefining. As such, Raman signatures of PuCl 3 could serve as potential forensic indicators of material process history. A novel technique for synthesizing PuCl 3 from the in-situ chlorination of plutonium metal with HCl was developed to establish these signatures. Cerium metal surrogates were utilized to ensure optimization of the plutonium experiments and to minimize personnel exposure, and all experiments were carried out in a Raman reaction chamber designed for air-tight, high vacuum environments. In-situ Raman spectroscopy was employed in conjunction with Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate the vibrational modes of PuCl 3 . Associated mixed oxy and hydroxyl phases are also reported. The combined Raman and DFT results have eliminated inconsistencies in Raman mode assignments for the MX 3 family of metal chlorides having P6 3 /m symmetry, and IR modes derived from the DFT calculations are additionally presented. The data observed in this study is of potential interest to nuclear forensic analyses, nuclear sample aging, nuclear energy, plutonium processing, and stockpile stewardship.

Advancements in nuclear data evaluations in the unresolved resonance region [Slides]

Minimal updates to current capabilities (SAMMY/AMPX) and to the ENDF format are proposed to include threshold reaction for outgoing charged-particle channels in the URR formalism. If average resonance parameters are reported, probability tables for newly defined reactions channels may be needed, implemented, and tested. Nuclear data evaluation of n+ 35 Cl reactions can be considered the best case to apply the proposed updates.
