Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering Studies of Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation in Silicate Melts

Incongruent liquid-liquid phase separation is a common phenomenon in molten oxides, but there are few structural studies due to the high temperatures involved ca. >1600oC. In this work, we present a high-energy x-ray combined small/wide angle scattering (SAXS/WAXS) method that can directly probe non-equilibrium phase diagrams. The Porod exponent in the SAXS signal is extracted, which measures the roughness of the interface formed between different phases. Problematic volatilization of silica in Al 2 O 3 -, CaO-, and MgO-bearing silica-rich liquids were minimized using levitation, laser heating and rapid time-resolved measurements (lasting tens of seconds), to probe the kinetics of the phase separation process. The WAXS measurement simultaneously probes the local atomic structure of the liquid state and shows that the primary structural changes are associated with the SiO 2 network. Cation coordination numbers extracted from pair distribution functions support the model that the origin of phase separation in binary silicate systems is due to Coulombic repulsions between poorly screened cations. For CaO-SiO 2 , the liquid-liquid phase separation is found to correlate with a pause in the temperature dependent atomic disorder associated with SiO4 tetrahedra.

High-pressure phase transitions and melt structure of Pb O 2 : An analog for silica

In situ x-ray diffraction measurements and inverse Monte Carlo simulations of pair distribution functions were used to study the structural response of PbO 2 under pressure and to characterize the local structure of liquid PbO 2 . Two phase transitions are observed upon room-temperature compression of crystalline PbO 2 up to ~65 GPa. Here, the starting mixture of rutile structured β– PbO 2 and orthorhombic α– PbO 2 undergoes a transition to a ZrO 2 -type orthorhombic phase with space group Pbca at ~21 GPa. Above 42 GPa, the Pbca phase transforms to a cotunnite-type phase with space group Pnam. In this paper, we also report short-range order in liquid PbO 2 , showing ~8–9-fold and 4–5-fold coordination around Pb and O atoms, respectively.

Melting and transport properties of Al 2⁢ O 3 at extreme conditions

The high-pressure, temperature phase diagram and transport properties of materials are of broad interest to planetary sciences and high-energy-density sciences and applications. Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) or its various forms (e.g., solutions with other oxides or silicates) are important constituents in Earth’s and super-Earths’ mantles, common window materials in dynamic compression experiments, and standard pressure calibrators in diamond-anvil-cell experiments. Its structures and transport properties are of particular importance but have not been well studied at above 100 GPa pressures. Based on extensive first-principles molecular dynamics calculations, we obtain atomic level insights on structural differences and accurate results on electrical conductivity (σ dc ), thermal conductivity (κ), and reflectivity of Al 2 O 3 in several phases at pressures of ~130–1300 GPa and temperatures of 4000–20,000 K. We find the solid-to-liquid state changes of Al 2 O 3 are accompanied by an insulator-to-semimetal transition with enhanced σ dc and κ, which is similar to other silicates and oxides and can facilitate magnetic field generation in deep interiors of rocky planets. We also find the solid-to-solid transition (from Rh 2 O 3 (II) to CaIrO 3 ) is accompanied by negligible changes in σ dc and κ at 160 GPa, contrary to previous expectations, whereas another higher pressure phase transition (CaIrO 3 to U 2 S 3 at 450 GPa) is associated with increases in σ dc and κ. Furthermore, we show the transport properties can be enhanced by oxygen vacancy in Al 2 O 3 , but are not significantly affected by forming solutions with MgSiO 3 , particularly when in the solid states.

Liquid fragility maximum in lithium borate glass‐forming melts related to the local structure

Abstract The structure of liquid lithium pyroborate, Li 4 B 2 O 5 ( J = Li/B = 2), has been measured over a wide temperature range by high‐energy X‐ray diffraction, and compared to that of its glass and borate liquids of other compositions. The results indicate a gradual increase in tetrahedral boron fraction from 3(1)% to 6(1)% during cooling from T = 1271(15) to 721(8) K, consistent with the larger N 4 = 10(1)% found for the glass, and literature 11 B nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. van't Hoff analysis based on a simple boron isomerization reaction BØ 3 O 2 – ⇌ BØO 2 2– yields Δ H = 13(1) kJ mol –1 and Δ S = 40(1) J mol –1 K –1 for the boron coordination change from 4 to 3, which are, respectively, smaller and larger than found for singly charged isomers for J ≤ 1. With these, we extend our model for N 4 ( J , T ), nonbridging oxygen fraction f nbr ( J , T ), configurational heat capacity , and entropy S conf ( J , T ) contributions up to J = 3. A maximum is revealed in at J = 1, and shown semi‐quantitatively to lead to a corresponding maximum in fragility contribution, akin to that observed in the total fragilities by temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Lithium is bound to 4.6(2) oxygen in the pyroborate liquid, with 2.7(1) bonds centered around 1.946(8) Å and 1.9(1) around 2.42(1) Å. In the glass, n LiO = 5.4(4), the increase being due to an increase in the number of short Li–O bonds.

Experimental Investigation of Melting and Solidification Processes of Phase Change Material Heat Exchanger

Rapid development and validation of PCM embedded heat exchangers (PCM-HX) concepts warrant a purpose-built test bench. This paper describes a test facility built for testing various PCM-HX configurations and phase change temperatures that will serve to validate the performance of novel PCM-HX designs. The entire test rig is placed in a temperature-controlled environmental chamber. Inside the PCM-HX containers, up to 48 T-type thermocouples can be spatially distributed on and around the tubes depending on the HX type to capture the phase change process over time. In this paper, a straight tube embedded in PCM having a phase change temperature of 37°C in cylindrical containers is tested. The PCM-HX uses water as an in-tube working fluid. Based on the measured data, the energy balance is analyzed, and its temperature distribution is presented. Here, the maximum deviation between the predicted stored energy and the energy stored calculated from experimental measurements is less than 5%.

Photoinduced Melting of V 4 O 7 Correlated State

The compound V 4 O 7 is one of the Magnéli phase (V n O 2n - 1 , n = 3, 4, …, 9) correlated vanadium oxides with distinct intriguing electronic and structural properties. The possibility to manipulate the phase state of V 4 O 7 on an ultrafast time scale by light makes this material promising for potential applications in photonics, optoelectronics, quantum, and neuromorphic circuit design. In this work, the ultrafast spectroscopy of V 4 O 7 reveals the second-order nature of the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition, emphasizing electronic and lattice contributions. The findings reveal the influence of the laser excitation level and temperature on these dynamics, providing a comprehensive understanding of V 4 O 7 structural changes and response to external stimuli. The phenomenological model based on the Landau–Ginzburg formalism provides a robust framework for explaining the photoinduced transition dynamics, showing a detailed picture of the light interaction with the electronic and lattice subsystems. This integrated approach significantly enhances the understanding of V 4 O 7 complex behavior upon photoexcitation, opening new possibilities for developing new optoelectronic devices and noninvasive optical control of the phase transition pathways in vanadates.

Influence of Solidification Velocity on Partitioning and Precipitate Evolution in a Multicomponent, Soft Magnetic Alloy Processed by Laser Melting

Multicomponent alloys have recently been shown to overcome the structural-functional barrier associated with soft magnetic materials. Here, single laser tracks have been used to investigate the effects of solidification velocity on the Al 7 Fe 32.6 Co 27.7 Ni 27.7 Ta 5 (at pct) alloy. Ta-rich cell wall partitioning was shown to affect the final distribution and size of the precipitating L1 2 phase, after aging. These findings demonstrate that solidification rate control offers the potential to tailor localized performance in alloys with size-dependent precipitation properties.
