Accelerating Scientific Computing in the Post-Moore’s Era

Novel uses of graphical processing units for accelerated computation revolutionized the field of high-performance scientific computing by providing specialized workflows tailored to algorithmic requirements. As the era of Moore’s law draws to a close, many new non–von Neumann processors are emerging as potential computational accelerators, including those based on the principles of neuromorphic computing, tensor algebra, and quantum information. While development of these new processors is continuing to mature, the potential impact on accelerated computing is anticipated to be profound. We discuss how different processing models can advance computing in key scientific paradigms: machine learning and constraint satisfaction. Significantly, each of these new processor types utilizes a fundamentally different model of computation, and this raises questions about how to best use such processors in the design and implementation of applications. While many processors are being developed with a specific domain target, the ubiquity of spin-glass models and neural networks provides an avenue for multi-functional applications. Furthermore, this also hints at the infrastructure needed to integrate next-generation processing units into future high-performance computing systems.

PastoralScape: An Environment-Driven Model of Vaccination Decision Making Within Pastoralist Groups in East Africa

Economic and cultural resilience among pastoralists in East Africa is threatened by the interconnected forces of climate change, contagious diseases spread and evolving national and international trade. A key factor in the resilience of livestock that communities depend on is human decision making regarding vaccination against prevalent diseases such as Rift Valley fever and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia. This paper describes an agent-based model that couples models of disease propagation, animal health, human decision making, and external GIS data sources capturing measures of foraging condition. We describe the design of the sub-models, their coupling, and demonstrate the sensitivity of the model to parameters that relate to controllable factors such as government and NGO information sources that can influence human decision making patterns. This model is intended to form the basis upon which richer economic and human factor models can be built.

FINAL TECHINICAL REPORT THUNDERING BUFFALO HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER

This U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Indian Energy supported project consists of energy conservation measures (ECMs) and a solar photovoltaic (PV) system to reduce cost of utility bills in a newly constructed Fort Peck Wellness Center, for use by tribal members in improving their physical and mental wellness. Construction of the building was outside the scope of the DOE supported project. A new 2-story wellness center was designed and constructed in Poplar, Montana. The wellness center is comprised of fitness areas, gymnasium, pool and spa, offices, and BOH support areas. The building was completed and has been operational for more than a year. A final measurement and verification of energy savings was completed after one year of operation and the results are presented herein, showing an energy savings 20% higher than the originally models indicated.
