Emulation of quantum correlations by classical dynamics in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain

We simulate the dynamical spin structure factor (DSSF) 𝒮⁡(𝑞,𝜔) of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain using classical simulations. By employing Landau-Lifshitz Dynamics, we emulate quantum correlations through temperature-dependent corrections, including rescaling of magnetic dipoles and renormalization of exchange interactions. Here, our results closely match Quantum Monte-Carlo calculations for 𝑘 B⁢ 𝑇/𝐽≳1, extending the applicability of classical dynamics to the challenging case of gapless excitations. At higher temperatures, our simulations comply with general predictions for uncorrelated paramagnetic fluctuations in the infinite temperature limit. Entanglement witnesses derived from the quantum-equivalent DSSF act as sensitive diagnostics for the quantum-to-classical crossover. Their reliability stems from their dependence on spectral features alone, enabling classical dynamics to emulate quantum thresholds without genuine entanglement. This framework also reproduces transverse spin correlations in finite magnetic fields, in agreement with quantum simulations. Together, our results establish quantum-corrected classical dynamics as a scalable and predictive tool for interpreting scattering experiments and exploring quantum correlations in strongly correlated spin systems.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.

From One- to Two-Magnon Excitations in the S = 3 / 2 Magnet β - CaCr 2 O 4

Here, we apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the magnetic dynamics in the S = 3 / 2 magnet β-CaCr 2 O 4 ( T N = 21 K ). The low-energy fluctuations, in the ordered state, resemble large- S linear spin waves from the incommensurate ground state. However, at higher energy transfers, these semiclassical and harmonic dynamics are replaced by an energy and momentum broadened continuum of excitations. Applying kinematic constraints required for energy and momentum conservation, sum rules of neutron scattering, and comparison against exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the dynamics at high-energy transfers resemble low- S one-dimensional quantum fluctuations. β-CaCr 2 O 4 represents an example of a magnet at the border between classical Néel and quantum phases, displaying dual characteristics.

Advanced Characterization of Solid-State Battery Materials Using Neutron Scattering Techniques

Advanced batteries require advanced characterization techniques, and neutron scattering is one of the most powerful experimental methods available for studying next-generation battery materials. Neutron scattering offers a non-destructive method to probe the complex structural and chemical processes occurring in batteries during operation in truly in situ/in operando measurements with a high sensitivity to battery-relevant elements such as lithium. Neutrons have energies comparable to the energies of excitations in materials and wavelengths comparable to atomic distances in the solid state, thus giving access to study structural and dynamical properties of materials on an atomic scale. In this review, a broad overview of selected neutron scattering techniques is presented to illustrate how neutron scattering can be used to gain invaluable information of solid-state battery materials, with a focus on in situ/in operando methods. These techniques span multiple decades of length and time scales to uncover the complex processes taking place fundamentally on the atomic scale and to determine how these processes impact the macroscale properties and performance of functional battery systems. This review serves the solid-state battery research community by examining how the unique capabilities of neutron scattering can be applied to answer critical and unresolved questions of materials research in this field. A thorough and broad perspective is provided with numerous practical examples showing these techniques in action for battery research.

Breakdown of sound in superfluid helium

As elementary particles carry energy and momentum in the Universe, quasiparticles are the elementary carriers of energy and momentum quanta in condensed matter. And, as elementary particles, under certain conditions quasiparticles can be unstable and decay, emitting pairs of less energetic ones. Pitaevskii [Sov. Phys. JETP 9, 830 (1959)] proposed that such processes exist in superfluid helium, a quantum fluid where the very concept of quasiparticles was borne by Landau and which presented the first notable success of that concept. Pitaevskii’s decays have important consequences, including the possible breakdown of a quasiparticle [M. B. Stone et al. , Nature (London) 440, 187 (2006)]. Here, we present neutron scattering experiments, which provide evidence that such decays explain the collapsing lifetime (strong damping) of higher-energy phonon-roton sound-wave quasiparticles in superfluid helium. Importantly, this damping develops when helium is pressurized towards crystallization, or warmed towards approaching the superfluid transition. Our results resolve a number of puzzles raised by previous experiments and reveal the ubiquity of quasiparticle decays and their importance for understanding quantum matter.

Low-temperature spin dynamics in the TmFeO 3 orthoferrite with a non-Kramers ion

We investigate the magnetic dynamics of the orthorhombic perovskite TmFeO 3 at low temperatures, below the spin reorientation transition at TSR≈80 K, by means of time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum combines two emergent collective modes associated with different magnetic sublattices. The Fe subsystem orders below TN~632 K into a canted antiferromagnetic structure and exhibits sharp, high-energy magnon excitations. We describe them using linear spin-wave theory, and reveal a pronounced anisotropy between in- and out-of-plane exchange interactions, which was mainly neglected in previous reports on the spin dynamics in orthoferrites. At lower energies, we find two crystalline electrical field (CEF) excitations of Tm3+ ions at energies of ~2 and 5 meV. In contrast to the sister compound YbFeO 3 , where the Yb 3+ ions form quasi-one-dimensional chains along the c axis, the Tm excitations show dispersion along both directions in the (0KL) scattering plane. Analysis of the neutron scattering polarization factor reveals a longitudinal polarization of the 2 meV excitation. To evaluate the effect of the CEF on the Tm 3+ ions, we perform point-charge model calculations, and their results quantitatively capture the main features of Tm single-ion physics, such as energies, intensities, and polarization of the CEF transitions, and the type of magnetic anisotropy.

Benchmarking Autonomous Scattering Experiments Illustrated on TAS

With the advancement of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, autonomous approaches are recognized to have great potential for performing more efficient scattering experiments. In our view, it is crucial for such approaches to provide thorough evidence about respective performance improvements in order to increase acceptance within a scientific community. Therefore, we propose a benchmarking procedure designed as a cost-benefit analysis that is applicable to any scattering method sequentially collecting data during an experiment. For a given approach, the performance assessment is based on how much benefit, given a certain cost budget, it is able to acquire in predefined test cases. Different approaches thus get a chance for comparison and can make their advantages explicit and visible. Key components of the procedure, i.e., cost measures, benefit measures, and test cases, are made precise for the setting of three-axes spectrometry (TAS) as an illustration. Finally, we discuss neglected aspects and possible extensions for the TAS setting and comment on the procedure’s applicability to other scattering methods. A Python implementation of the procedure to simplify its utilization by interested researchers from the field is also provided.

Crystal-field Hamiltonian and anisotropy in KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2

We use neutron scattering and bulk property measurements to determine the single-ion crystal-field Hamiltonians of delafossites KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2 . These two systems contain planar equilateral triangular Er lattices arranged in two stacking variants: rhombohedral (for K) or hexagonal (Cs). Our analysis shows that regardless of the stacking order both compounds exhibit an easy-plane ground-state doublet with large J z =1/2 terms and the potential for significant quantum effects, making them candidates for quantum-spin-liquid or other exotic ground states.

Spin-exchange Hamiltonian and topological degeneracies in elemental gadolinium

In this report we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic exchange Hamiltonian of elemental gadolinium. We use neutron scattering to measure the magnon spectrum over the entire Brillouin zone and fit the excitations to a spin wave model to extract the first 26 nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange interactions with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find these exchange interactions to follow RKKY behavior, oscillating from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic as a function of distance. Finally, we discuss the topological features and degeneracies in Gd, and HCP ferromagnets in general. We show theoretically how, with asymmetric exchange, topological properties could be tuned with a magnetic field.

Three-Magnon Bound State in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet α-NaMnO 2

Here we report on the formation of a three-magnon bound state in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet α-NaMnO 2 , where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn 3+ ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order n > 2 composite magnons exist, and, speci fically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition of NaMnO 2 . We corroborate our findings with exact numerical simulations of a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with easy-axis anisotropy using matrix-product state techniques, nding a good quantitative agreement with the experiment. Furthermore, these results establish NaMnO 2 as a unique platform for exploring the dynamics of composite magnon states inherent to a classical antiferromagnetic spin chain with Ising-like single ion anisotropy.

Absence of moment fragmentation in the mixed B -site pyrochlore Nd 2 GaSbO 7

Nd-based pyrochlore oxides of the form Nd 2 GaSbO 7 have garnered a significant amount of interest owing to the moment fragmentation physics observed in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 and speculated in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 . Notably this phenomenon is not ubiquitous in this family, as it is absent in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 , which features a smaller ionic radius on the B site. Here, we explore the necessary conditions for moment fragmentation in the Nd pyrochlore family through a detailed study of the mixed B-site pyrochlore Nd 2 GaSbO 7 . Furthermore, the B site of this system is characterized by significant disorder and an extremely small average ionic radius. Similarly to Nd 2 GaSbO 7 , we find no evidence for moment fragmentation through our bulk characterization and neutron scattering experiments, indicating that chemical pressure (and not necessarily the B-site disorder) plays a key role in the presence or absence of this phenomenon in this material family. Surprisingly, the presence of significant B-site disorder in Nd 2 GaSbO 7 does not generate a spin-glass ground state and instead the same all-in-all-out magnetic order identified in other Nd pyrochlores is found here.

Electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in the doped topological crystalline insulator ( Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 1 – x In x Te

Here, we present a neutron-scattering study of phonons in single crystals of ( Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 1 – x In x Te with x = 0 (metallic, but nonsuperconducting) and x = 0.2 (nonmetallic normal state, but superconducting). We map the phonon dispersions (more completely for x = 0 ) and find general consistency with theoretical calculations, except for the transverse and longitudinal optical (LO) modes at the Brillouin-zone center. At low temperature, both modes are strongly damped but sit at a finite energy ( ≈ 4 meV in both samples), shifting to higher energy at room temperature. These modes are soft due to a proximate structural instability driven by the sensitivity of Pb-Te and Sn-Te p -orbital hybridization to off-center displacements of the metal atoms. The impact of the soft optical modes on the low-energy acoustic modes is inferred from the low thermal conductivity, especially at low temperature. Given that the strongest electron-phonon coupling is predicted for the LO mode, which should be similar for both studied compositions, it is intriguing that only the In-doped crystal is superconducting. In addition, we observe elastic diffuse (Huang) scattering that is qualitatively explained by the difference in Pb-Te and Sn-Te bond lengths within the lattice of randomly distributed Pb and Sn sites. We also confirm the presence of anomalous diffuse low-energy atomic vibrations that we speculatively attribute to local fluctuations of individual Pb atoms between off-center sites.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Ba_3}$ $\mathrm{MnSb_2}$ $\mathrm{O_9}$

Here, we study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 , an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane $120$° state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasiclassical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z 2 -vortex excitations.

Nature of the magnetic stripes in fully oxygenated La 2 CuO 4+y

We present triple-axis neutron scattering studies of static and dynamic magnetic stripes in an optimally oxygen-doped cuprate superconductor, La 2 CuO 4+y , which exhibits a clean superconducting transition at T c = 42 K. Polarization analysis reveals that the magnetic stripe structure is equally represented along both of the tetragonal crystal axes and that the fluctuating stripes display significant weight for in-plane as well as out-of-plane spin components. Both static magnetic order as well as low-energy fluctuations are fully developed in zero applied magnetic field and the low-energy spin fluctuations at ℏω = 0.3 – 10 meV intensify on cooling. We interpret this as an indication that superconductivity and low-energy spin fluctuations coexist microscopically in spatial regions which are separated from domains with static magnetic order.

Preferred Spin Excitations in the Bilayer Iron-Based Superconductor $CaK(Fe_{0.96}Ni_{0.04})_4As_4$ with Spin-Vortex Crystal Order

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe 0.96 Ni 0.04 ) 4 As 4 with superconductivity coexisting with a noncollinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of the Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even L symmetries due to the bilayer coupling are found similar to the undoped compound CaKFe 4 As 4 but at lower energies. Polarization analysis reveals that the odd mode is c-axis polarized, and the low-energy spin anisotropy can persist to the paramagnetic phase at high temperature, which closely resembles other systems with in-plane collinear and c-axis biaxial magnetic orders. Overall, these results provide the missing piece of the puzzle on the SOC effect in iron-pnictide superconductors, and also establish a common picture of c-axis preferred magnetic excitations below T c regardless of the details of magnetic pattern or lattice symmetry.

Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO 3 , with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced via La substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Furthermore, Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y 1-$x$ La $x$ TiO 3 as a model system for the study of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.
