Analysis of temperature-dependent neutron transmission and self-indication measurements on tantalum at 2-keV neutron energy

The method of pseudo-resonance cross sections is used to analyze published temperature-dependent neutron transmission and self-indication measurements on tantalum in the unresolved region. In the energy region analyzed, 1825.0 to 2017.0 eV, a direct application of the pseudo-resonance approach using a customary average strength function will not provide effective cross sections which fit the measured cross section behavior. Rather a local value of the strength function is required, and a set of resonances which model the measured behavior of the effective cross sections is derived. This derived set of resonance parameters adequately represents the observed resonance hehavior in this local energy region. Similar analyses for the measurements in other unresolved energy regions are necessary to obtain local resonance parameters for improved reactor calculations. This study suggests that Doppler coefficients calculated by sampling from grand average statistical distributions over the entire unresolved resonance region can be in error, since significant local variations in the statistical distributions are not taken into consideration.

Temperature-dependent transmission and self-indication measurements upon depleted U in the unresolved region

Neutron transmission and self-indication ratio measurements have been carried out at the RPI LINAC on depleted U up to 100 KeV in order to investigate the temperature dependence of resonance self-shielding. These measurements were performed at three sample temperatures (77 deg k, 295 deg k, and 973 deg k) and with sample thicknesses ranging from 0.0076 to 0.0621 atom/barn. Both stochastic sampling and analytical methods have been used to interpret these data. Average resonance parameters have been obtained and temperature dependence as well as sample thickness dependence of the data have been extensively studied.

Investigation of environmental indices from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. Land use change, water quality, and air quality indices have been calculated from analysis of ERTS-1 multispectral scanning imagery and computer compatible tapes. Specifications have been developed and discussed for an ERTS-1 environmental monitoring system which help to serve the information needs of environmental managers at the Federal, state, regional, and local level. General conclusions of the investigation are that ERTS-1 data is very useful in land use mapping and updating to 10-15 categories, and can provide an overall measure of air and water turbidity; however, more and better ground truth and possibly additional spacecraft sensors will be required if specific air and water pollutants are to be quantified from satellite data.

Method of magnetobiological indication in clinical laboratory practice

Data are presented on the use of the method of magnetobiological indication for defining the immunobiological state of patients with very serious diseases. It has been found that the enzymes of a patient react more sensitively to the energy from a magnetic field. It is important that the magnetoreactivity of the enzymes, like the cell forms of the blood in the patients, have a certain relationship to the clinical-nosological forms and the dynamics of the illness of the subject.

The reliability of the daily quick look solar wind velocities as indicators of interplanetary activity

It is shown that the daily quick look solar wind velocities based on the Ames Research Center solar wind plasma data obtained on the Pioneer spacecraft are surprisingly reliable indicators of interplanetary activity. These velocities can appropriately be used in correlation studies with an average accuracy of plus or minus 5%. This accuracy reflects the 'jitter' in the solar wind velocity during quiescent intervals and across high-speed streams.

The effect of a visual indicator on rate of visual search Evidence for processing control

Search rates were estimated from response latencies in a visual search task of the type used by Atkinson et al. (1969), in which a subject searches a small set of letters to determine the presence or absence of a predesignated target. Half of the visual displays contained a marker above one of the letters. The marked letter was the only one that had to be checked to determine whether or not the display contained the target. The presence of a marker in a display significantly increased the estimated rate of search, but the data clearly indicated that subjects did not restrict processing to the marked item. Letters in the vicinity of the marker were also processed. These results were interpreted as showing that subjects are able to exercise some degree of control over the search process in this type of task.

The use of remote sensing and natural indicators to delineate floodplains - Preliminary findings

Feasibility studies to delineate floodplains using aerial photography have been conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers. The objective of this project is to establish floodplain boundaries using natural indicators such as vegetation types, soil types, moisture differences, and geologic variations. Using aircraft multispectral data, an automated mapping routine should enable the Corps of Engineers to reduce costly field surveys and improve the accuracy of floodplain delineation in pristine areas. The purpose of this paper is to document the methodology utilized in this investigation while using one of a series of available data sets and test sites and to report preliminary findings.

Indications of fluid immiscibility in glass from West Clearwater Lake impact crater, Quebec, Canada

Glass from the West Clearwater Lake hypervelocity impact crater contains numerous spheroids, 10 to 500 microns across, which appear to have formed at high temperatures as fluids immiscible in the enclosing melt. The spheroids are distinguished from small, normal, largely void gas vesicles, which are also present, by being completely filled in all cases; by having fillings which vary in composition from spheroid to spheroid, even between spheroids in close association; and by indications that the present fillings are representative of the contents present before the matrix melt chilled. Most of the spheroids are classified petrographically into three types. The preservation of spheroids in the West Clearwater Lake glass is attributed mainly to the position of the glass masses within the breccias lining the crater floor. It is considered that the glass in this location did not achieve free flight but, as part of a large mass, cooled relatively slowly through the high temperature regime in which the spheroids were generated, and then, when detached, chilled rapidly to preserve a record of this transient stage in their history.

On the computation of minimal indices for linear multivariable systems

This paper presents an algorithm for the computation of the minimal indices for linear multivariable systems. The same algorithm can be used to determine the rank of a transfer function. As an application, this algorithm is shown to be useful in the design of non-interacting control systems.

Summary of results indicating the beneficial effects of rotor vortex modification

The possibility of reducing blade-slap noise and high-frequency air loads and of increasing performance by tip air mass injection (TAMI) is investigated. The discussion is limited to two types of TAMI: chordwise injection with air injected at the blade tip in a chordwise direction and spanwise injection with air injected in a spanwise direction. Experimental and analytical results indicate that a properly designed TAMI system can restructure the near field characteristics of a concentrated vortex that trails off the tip of a lifting surface, that the tip vortex is spread by the application of chordwise TAMI, that mixing exists between the injected air mass and the vortex flow which enhances vortex decay, that the net power requirements to implement the system on operational helicopters are within acceptable levels, that maximum drop of noise level reductions of about 25 dB can be achieved, and that a decrease in the drag induced by the tip vortex in a spanwise TAMI system can be obtained by restructuring the vortex as it forms along the airfoil chord and by moving the vortex farther outboard of the tip.

Water quality indicators obtainable from aircraft and Landsat images and their use in classifying lakes

Equations describing the interaction of sunlight and skylight with the surface of a lake, particles in the water to the depth where light is extinguished, and lake bottom are presented, and the use of aircraft and Landsat images to derive water quality indicators on the basis of these interactions is discussed. A very clear, deep lake with a backscatter signal similar to that of distilled water is used as a reference standard. The degree of turbidity of other target lakes is determined by comparing their residual radiance with the clear lake standard and with the residual radiance of a lake whose turbidity has been determined from water samples. The relative and absolute strengths of residual radiance are used to determine the type and concentration of suspended material, respectively. Oil slicks are characterized by an increased specular reflectance component, decreased signal from the underlying water, and added backscatter signal from the oil volume.
