Earth Resources Technology Satellite: Cumulative US standard catalog, 23 July 1972 - 23 July 1973. Volume 1: Observation ID listing

Observation identification and coordinate listing are given for ERTS 1 images collected over the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii from July 23, 1972 to July 23, 1973. Data format includes the following: (1) the date of catalog listing; (2) the time frame during which the imagery was processed; (3) an assigned observation number; (4) microfilm role and image position on roll; (5) date of observation; (6) longitude and latitude in degrees and minutes at observation center; (7) estimated percent of cloud cover; (8) orbit number; (9) sun elevation and azimuth at observation center; and (10) image quality for both the return beam vidicon and the multispectral band scanner. Availability information for microfilm copies of ERTS imagery is included.

Evaluation of digitally corrected ERTS images

The discussion is limited to processes by which a set of data samples collected on a geometrically distorted grid can be converted to samples on a different precisely specified grid. It is assumed that a mathematical expression for the desired transformation already exists. Concern will be the effects on image quality (specifically loss of resolution, photometric accuracy, and miscellaneous aberations) that result from various techniques used in accomplishing the resampling. The resampling techniques evaluated have included nearest neighbor, bilinear, cubic convolution, and various truncated versions of sinc (x). The conclusion is that cubic convolution yields substantially higher quality output data for scenes typically encountered and can, in some instances, substantially enhance one's ability to abstract information.

Analysis of DuPont and Kodak duplicating films and chemistries in a Fultron spray processor

A test program was conducted with duPont duplicating film type SR 112 and SCOLOR developer and Kodak duplicating film types 2430, 2422, and FE 2628 (SO-467) and MX-641 developer to determine sensitometric and image quality characteristics of these materials when used with a fultron spray processor. The test results show that the SCOLOR developer foams excessively in the fultron processor when used with or without the addition of an antifoaming agent. The Kodak type FE 2628 film with MX-641 chemistry had the longest linear Log E range at a 1.0 gamma. Sensitometric curves and granularity traces for all film process combinations tested are included.

Electronic magnification for astronomical camera tubes

Definitions, test schemes, and analyses used to provide variable magnification in the image section of the television sensor for large space telescopes are outlined. Experimental results show a definite form of magnetic field distribution is necessary to achieve magnification in the range 3X to 4X. Coil systems to establish the required field shapes were built, and both image intensifiers and camera tubes were operated at high magnification. The experiments confirm that such operation is practical and can provide satisfactory image quality. The main problem with such a system was identified as heating of the photocathode due to concentration of coil power dissipation in that vicinity. Suggestions for overcoming this disadvantage are included.

Interior structure of Uranus

Critical measurements relative to interior structure which can be made during a spacecraft mission to Uranus are discussed. Models of atmospheric composition, possible magnetic moment, and gravitational harmonics are described, and it is shown that high quality imaging of the atmospheric rotation and determination of the possible magnetic field rotation will facilitate construction of an accurate model of the interior structure of the planet.

Development and investigation of single-scan TV radiography for the acquisition of dynamic physiologic data

A light amplifier for large flat screen fluoroscopy was investigated which will decrease both its size and weight. The work on organ contouring was extended to yield volumes. This is a simple extension since the fluoroscopic image contains density (gray scale) information which can be translated as tissue thickness, integrated, yielding accurate volume data in an on-line situation. A number of devices were developed for analog image processing of video signals, operating on-line in real time, and with simple selection mechanisms. The results show that this approach is feasible and produces are improvement in image quality which should make diagnostic error significantly lower. These are all low cost devices, small and light in weight, thereby making them usable in a space environment, on the Ames centrifuge, and in a typical clinical situation.

Analytical study of acousto/optical holography-interfacing methods for acoustical and optical holography NDT research

The international status of the art of acousto optical imaging techniques adaptable to nondestructive testing and, interfacing methods for acoustical and optical holography in nondestructive testing research are studied. Evaluation of 20 different techniques encompassed investigation of varieties of detectors and detection schemes, all of which are described and summarized. Related investigation is reported in an Appendix. Important remarks on image quality, factors to be considered in designing a particular system, and conclusions and recommendations are presented. Three bibliographies are included.
