In Pursuit of the FIP Effect in Stellar Coronae

Observational data have been reduced. Sig Gem data have been fitted using the XSPEC software, though the treatment within this software of the Fe transitions arising from the n=2 levels is thought to be sufficiently inaccurate as to affect the results obtained. Data for the same star obtained by EUVE have been extracted from the archive and are being analyzed in order to try and constrain the coronal DEM. Results of the first sets of model fitting have been presented at an AAS meeting; a more substantial presentation of these and updated results in a main-stream referred journal is in progress.

HST Studies of the Chromospheres, Wind, and Mass-Loss Rates of Cool Giant and Supergiant Stars

UV spectra of K-M giant and supergiant stars and of carbon stars have been acquired with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These spectra have been used to measure chromospheric flow and turbulent velocities, study the acceleration of their stellar winds, acquire constraints on their outer atmospheric structure, and enable estimates of their mass-loss rates. Results from our observations of the giant stars Gamma Dra (K5 III hybrid), Alpha Tau (K5 III), Gamma Cru (M3.4 III), Mu Gem (M3 IIIab), and 30 Her (MG III), the supergiants Alpha Ori (M2 Iab) and Lambda Vel (K5 Ib), and the carbon stars TX Psc (NO; C6,2) and TW Hor (NO; C7,2) will be summarized and compared. The high resolution and wavelength accuracy of these data have allowed the direct measurement of the acceleration of the stellar winds in the chromospheres of several of these stars (from initial velocities of 3-9 km/s to upper velocities of 15-25 km/s) and of the chromospheric macroturbulence (-25-35 km/s). The high signal-to-noise and large dynamic range of these spectra have allowed the detection and identification of numerous new emission features, including weak C IV emission indicative of hot transition-region plasma in the non-coronal giant Alpha Tau, many new fluorescent lines of Fe II, and the first detection of fluorescent molecular hydrogen emission and of Ca II recombination lines in the UV spectrum of a giant star. The UV spectrum of two carbon stars have been studied with unprecedented resolution and reveal extraordinarily complicated Mg II lines nearly smothered by circumstellar absorptions. Finally, comparison of synthetic UV emission line profiles computed with the Lamers et al. (1987) Sobolev with Exact Integration (SEI) code with observations of chromospheric emission lines overlain with wind absorption features provides estimates of the mass-loss rates for four of these stars.

A Comprehensive Orbit Reconstruction for the Galileo Prime Mission in the J2000 System

The Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter in December of 1995 to begin an orbital tour of the Jovian system. The objective of the tour was up close study of the planet, its satellites, and its magnetosphere. The spacecraft completed its 11 orbit prime mission in November of 1997 having had 16 successful close encounters with the Galilean satellites (including two prior to Jupiter orbit insertion). Galileo continues to operate and will have made an additional 10 orbits of Jupiter by the date of this Conference. Earlier papers discuss the determination of the spacecraft orbit in support of mission operations from arrival at Jupiter through the first 9 orbits. In this paper we re-examine those earlier orbits and extend the analysis through orbit 12, the first orbit of the Galileo Europa Mission (GEM). The objective of our work is the reconstruction of the spacecraft trajectory together with the development of a consistent set of ephemerides for the Galilean satellites. As a necessary byproduct of the reconstruction we determine improved values for the Jovian system gravitational parameters and for the Jupiter pole orientation angles. Our preliminary analyses have already led to many of the results reported in the scientific literature. Unlike the Galileo Navigation Team which operates in the EME-1950 coordinate system, we elected to work in the (J2000) International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF), the reference frame of the current JPL planetary and satellite ephemerides as well as the standard frame of the international astronomical and planetary science community. Use of this frame permits more precise modelling of the spacecraft and satellite observations. Moreover, it is the frame of choice for all other operational JPL missions and will probably be the frame for future missions for some time. Consequently, our adoption of the ICRF will facilitate the combination of our results with any obtained from future missions (e.g. the proposed Europa Orbiter mission). In addition, our results may be used by the science community, without need of a reference frame conversion.

Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared: 1.2-35um Spectra of Six Standard Stars - 4

We present five new absolutely calibrated continuous stellar spectra from 1.2 to 35 microns, constructed as far as possible from actual observed spectral fragments taken from the ground, the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), and the IRAS Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS). These stars, Beta Peg, Delta Boo, Beta And, Beta Gem, and Delta Hya, augment our already created complete absolutely calibrated spectrum for a Tau. All these spectra have a common calibration pedigree. The wavelength coverage is ideal for calibration of many existing and proposed ground-based, airborne, and satellite sensors.

Mars Greenhouse Experiment Module: An Experiment to Grow Flowers on Mars

NASA has entered a new phase of in-depth exploration of the planets where robotic exploration of the Solar System is focusing on in-situ missions that pave the way for human exploration. Creating a human presence on Mars will require specialized knowledge and experience concerning the Martian environment and validated technologies that will provide life-supporting consumables. An understanding of the response of terrestrial organisms to the Martian environment with respect to potential deleterious effects on crew health and changes to biological processes will be paramount. In response to these challenges an innovative selfcontained flight experiment is proposed, which is designed to assess the biocompatibility of the Martian environment by germinating seeds and following their growth through to flowering. The experiment, dubbed Mars Greenhouse Experiment Module (Mars GEM), will be accomplished in a sealed pressurized growth chamber or 'Mars Greenhouse'. Seeds will be grown in Martian soil and the Mars Greenhouse will provide ultraviolet-radiation protected, thermal-controlled environment for plant growth that actively controls the CO2 (required nutrient) and O2 (generated by the plants) levels in the chamber. The simple, but visually dramatic, demonstration of the potential to grow a plant in a man-made environment on the surface of Mars should establish a strong connection between current robotic missions and future human habitation on Mars.

Estimation of Mass-Loss Rate for M Giants from UV Emission Line Profiles

The photon-scattering winds of M giants produce absorption features in the strong chromospheric emission lines. These provide us with an opportunity to assess important parameters of the wind, including flow and turbulent velocities, the optical depth of the wind above the region of photon creation, and the star's mass-loss rate. We have used the Lamers et al. (1987) Sobolev with Exact Integration (SET) radiative transfer code, along with simple models of the outer atmospheric structure and wind, to determine the wind characteristics of two M-giant stars, gamma Cru (M3.4) and mu Gem (M3IIIab). The SET code has the advantage of being computationally fast and allows a great number of possible wind models to be examined. The analysis procedure involves specifying wind parameters and then using the program to calculate line profiles for the Mg II (UV1) lines and a range of unblended Fe II lines. These lines have a wide range of wind opacities and therefore probe different heights in the atmosphere. The assumed wind properties are iterated until the predicted profiles match the observations over as many lines as possible. We present estimates of the wind parameters for these stars and offer a comparison to wind properties previously-derived for low-gravity K stars using the same technique.

Cometary Science After Hale-Bopp

Comets and the chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles (CP IDPs) that they shed in their comae are reservoirs of primitive solar nebula materials. The high porosity and fragility of cometary grains and CP IDPs, and anomalously high deuterium contents of pyroxene-rich CP IDPs imply these aggregate particles contain significant interstellar grain components. Spectrophotometry of comets at thermal IR wavelengths (3-40 microns) reveal the presence of a warm (near-IR) featureless emission modeled by amorphous carbon grains, and mid-IR and far-IR broad and narrow resonances modeled by chondritic (50% Fe and 50% Mg) amorphous and Mg-rich crystalline silicate minerals, respectively. Cometary amorphous silicate resonances are well matched by IR spectra of CP IDPs dominated by 0.1 micron spherules of Glass with Embedded Metal and Sulfides (GEMS) that are thought to be the interstellar Fe-bearing amorphous silicates produced in the cooling outflows of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. Acid-etched microtomed CP IDP samples, however, show that both the carbon phase (aliphatic) and the amorphous silicate phase (Mg-rich) are not optically absorbing while the embedded Fe nanoparticles make the IDPs dark. The CP IDPs suggest either significant processing has occurred in the ISM or that the AGB amorphous silicates have Mg-rich stoichiometry and possibly grew on Fe particle condensates. Cometary crystalline silicate resonances are well matched by IR spectra of laboratory submicron Mg-rich olivine crystals, [Mg(sub y),Fe(sub 1-y)]2SiO4 with y/ge0.85, and in the case of Hale-Bopp at r(sub h) less than or equal to approx. 1.5 AU, by Mg-rich pyroxene crystals, [Mg(sub x),Fe(sub 1-x)]SiO3 with x/ge0.85. While a fraction of AGB stardust (less than or equal to 15%) are Mg-rich crystals, this interstellar star dust component is insufficient to account for the deduced abundance of crystalline minerals in comet dust. An insufficient source of ISM Mg-rich crystals leads to the inference that Mg-rich crystals in comets may be hot, early solar nebula condensates that traveled large radial distances out to the comet-forming zone.

Software Engineering Support of the Third Round of Scientific Grand Challenge Investigations: Earth System Modeling Software Framework Survey

One of the most significant challenges in large-scale climate modeling, as well as in high-performance computing in other scientific fields, is that of effectively integrating many software models from multiple contributors. A software framework facilitates the integration task, both in the development and runtime stages of the simulation. Effective software frameworks reduce the programming burden for the investigators, freeing them to focus more on the science and less on the parallel communication implementation. while maintaining high performance across numerous supercomputer and workstation architectures. This document surveys numerous software frameworks for potential use in Earth science modeling. Several frameworks are evaluated in depth, including Parallel Object-Oriented Methods and Applications (POOMA), Cactus (from (he relativistic physics community), Overture, Goddard Earth Modeling System (GEMS), the National Center for Atmospheric Research Flux Coupler, and UCLA/UCB Distributed Data Broker (DDB). Frameworks evaluated in less detail include ROOT, Parallel Application Workspace (PAWS), and Advanced Large-Scale Integrated Computational Environment (ALICE). A host of other frameworks and related tools are referenced in this context. The frameworks are evaluated individually and also compared with each other.

This volume, the first of three volumes, is a compilation of 22 unclassified/unlimited technical papers presented at the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) 30th Propellant Development & Characterization Subcommittee Meeting, held on 18-21 March 2002 at the Sheraton Colorado Springs Hotel, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The papers presented herein reflect work performed in the areas of green energetic materials (GEM) development; liquid and gel propellant development; propellant surveillance and aging; and propellant chemistry test methods.

Chemical Compositions and Abundance Anomalies in Stellar Coronae ADP 99

Progress has been made using both EUVE (Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer) and ASCA (Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics) data and a new postdoctoral scientist has now been hired. Stars studied to date include YY Gem (dMe binary), xi Boo A (intermediate activity G8 V), xi UMa (more active G quadruple system) HR1099 (K1 IV + G5 V) RS CVn-like, AU Mic (dMe). In addition to a paper that concentrated on abundancies in HR1099, a paper was recently submitted on the coronal abundances of AR(tilde)Lac that revealed an interesting pattern of overabundances of very low FIP elements (Al and Ca) compared to the low FIP elements Si, Mg and Fe. Two papers are nearing completion on methods of analysis and on the abundances in the corona of AU(tilde)Mic. Additionally, two invited conference proceedings papers are being published on this work. The main conclusion of the study to date is that our existing ideas of coronal abundance anomalies need complete revision. The solar-like FIP effect is replaced by a pattern than appears to enhance high FIP elements rather than low FIP elements in very active stars. The archival studies we are undertaking now are revealing some key details of these patterns, and are beginning to map out the anomalies as a function of spectral type, a key goal of this study.

Two Types of Soft X-ray Spectra in Cataclysmic Variables

We present results of analyses of Chandra HETG soft X-ray spectra (Lambda = 1.5-25 A) of seven cataclysmic variables. We find that these spectra divide unambiguously into two distinct types. Spectra of the first type, consisting of EX Hya, V603 Aql, U Gem, and SS Cyg, are remarkably well fit by a simple cooling flow model, which assumes only steady-state isobaric radiative cooling. This model has only two free parameters, the maximum temperature, kT(sub max), which provides a rough measurement of the depth of the potential well, and the overall normalization, which provides a highly precise measurement of the total accretion rate. Spectra of the second type, consisting of V1223 Sgr, A Psc, and GK Per, are grossly inconsistent with a simple cooling flow model. They instead exhibit a hard continuum, and, in addition, show strong H-like and He-like ion emission but little Fe L-shell emission, which is consistent with expectations for line emission from a photoionized plasma. Using a simple photoionization model, we argue that the observed line emission for these sources can be driven entirely by the hard continuum. The physical significance of these two distinct types of X-ray spectra is also explored.

High-Sensitivity X-ray Polarimetry with Amorphous Silicon Active-Matrix Pixel Proportional Counters

Photoelectric X-ray polarimeters based on pixel micropattern gas detectors (MPGDs) offer order-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity over more traditional techniques based on X-ray scattering. This new technique places some of the most interesting astronomical observations within reach of even a small, dedicated mission. The most sensitive instrument would be a photoelectric polarimeter at the focus of 2 a very large mirror, such as the planned XEUS. Our efforts are focused on a smaller pathfinder mission, which would achieve its greatest sensitivity with large-area, low-background, collimated polarimeters. We have recently demonstrated a MPGD polarimeter using amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) readout suitable for the focal plane of an X-ray telescope. All the technologies used in the demonstration polarimeter are scalable to the areas required for a high-sensitivity collimated polarimeter. How to Build a Supermassive Black Hole

NASA astronomer Kim Weaver has got that sinking feeling. You know, it's that unsettling notion you get when you sift through your X-ray data and, to your surprise, find mid-sized black holes sinking toward the center of a galaxy, where they merge with others to form a single supermassive black hole. Could such a thing be true? These would be the largest mergers since America On Line bought Time-Warner, and perhaps even more violent. The process would turn a starburst galaxy inside out, making it more like a quasar host galaxy. Using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, Weaver saw a hint of this fantastic process in a relatively nearby starburst galaxy named NGC 253 in the constellation Sculptor. She noticed that starburst galaxies - those gems set aglow in a colorful life cycle of hyperactive star birth, death, and renewal - seem to have a higher concentration of mid-mass black holes compared to other galaxies.

Baby Stars in Orion Solve Solar System Mystery

What do X-rays, meteoroids, infant stars in the Orion Nebula, and our solar system have in common? Perhaps much more than anyone thought. Eric Feigelson of Penn State University stumbled onto a connection one day while his thoughts were far from the solar system, turned toward the vibrant neighborhood of young stars, hot gas, and caliginous dust of the Orion Nebula. This nebula, 1500 light-years away, is visible to the naked eye in the constellation Orion, a gem to behold with a good pair of binoculars or a telescope under dark skies. In Orion, Feigelson inadvertently found a possible solution to a long-standing mystery about our own solar system: the presence of exotic isotopes locked away in meteoroids. Scientists have assumed that these short-lived isotopes - special forms of atomic nuclei, such as aluminum-26 and calcium-41 - were transported here by a nearby supernova. Only tenuous evidence for such an explosion exists, but what else could have made the isotopes? The isotopes are about as old as the solar system, and the Sun couldn t possibly have been powerful enough to create them. Well, maybe we need to give the Sun a little more credit. Feigelson found that very young, midsized stars in the Orion Nebula - in the same stellar class as our Sun except they are only a million years old - produce powerful flares visible in X-rays. His team spotted these X-ray flares with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These baby-tantrum flares are indeed energetic enough to forge heavy isotopes, Feigelson says. If the infant stars in Orion can do it now, then our Sun could have done the same when the solar system was forming about 4.5 billion years ago, when the Sun itself was only a few million years old.

New ISTP Solar Max: A Multi-Spacecraft Study of the Flow of Ionospheric Plasma

The unique instrumentation on the Polar satellite combined with the simultaneous measurement of different parts of the magnetosphere with multiple satellites make possible the study of magnetospheric processes in a special way. In particular, the study of the ionospheric supply of plasma to the magnetosphere can by accomplished to give important results on the plasmas which drive the dynamics of the magnetosphere. This study concentrated on the period of September to December, 2001 in which the Polar orbit had precessed to the point that the line of apsides was near the equatorial plane. This unique orbital configuration enabled the TIDE instrument to measure outflowing ions across the polar cap and then transit the magnetotail lobes and observe the dramatic change in plasma characteristics as the satellite entered the plasma sheet. Contact was made with investigators on the Cluster and Geotail satellite missions and corresponding time frames were studied in the data. There were two approximate conjunctions between Polar and Geotail and data were compared to look for features which might be related. The higher energy concentration of the Geotail instrument made direct comparisons with TIDE difficult, and the Cluster measurements did not surface any cases that corresponded closely in space and time. There were, however, many interesting aspects of the Polar orbits which permitted the observation of the changing ionospheric outflowing plasma characteristics. As in earlier measurements, the ionospheric plasma could be seen flowing up the magnetic field lines out of the northern and southern polar caps. Its energy suggested a polar wind origin energized by the centrifugal acceleration of flow through the polar cusp. The roughly 10eV ions then moved out into the lobes of the magnetotail where they could be seen flowing toward the plasma sheet in both the northern and southern magnetotail lobes. There was also a double field-aligned region of warm ions observed just outside the plasmasphere, stretching toward the auroral zone and inner plasma sheet boundary. Upon entering the plasma sheet, the plasma energy jumped from 10 s of eV to greater than 1 keV. The single field aligned flows transitioned to highly variable spatially choppy energized ion distributions with a variety of pitch angle configurations. This pattern was quite repeatable in all of the Polar orbits that were examined and are compatible with the source of ions being the polar wind which is then energized to 10 s of eV by the centrifugal acceleration. These modestly energized polar wind ions are then carried to the magnetotail where they are substantially energized by the curvature drift-induced movement across the cross-tail potential of the magnetotail. This latter drift energizes the ions to the energies typically found in the plasma sheet. Subsequent drift and energization can cause the ions to become part of the ring current. The results of this study were presented at the Spring AGU meeting in 2002 and the GEM meeting in June 2003. They are the foundation for a paper that has been submitted by Matthew Huddleston to the Journal of Geophysical Research in December 2003. This work was part of the thesis that Matthew completed in finishing his Ph.D. in Physics at Vanderbilt University.
