Conformational Entropy as a Means to Control the Behavior of Poly(diketoenamine) Vitrimers In and Out of Equilibrium

Abstract Control of equilibrium and non‐equilibrium thermomechanical behavior of poly(diketoenamine) vitrimers is shown by incorporating linear polymer segments varying in molecular weight (MW) and conformational degrees of freedom into the dynamic covalent network. While increasing MW of linear segments yields a lower storage modulus at the rubbery plateau after softening above the glass transition (T g ), both T g and the characteristic time of stress relaxation are independently governed by the conformational entropy of the embodied linear segments. Activation energies for bond exchange in the solid state are lower for networks incorporating flexible chains; the network topology freezing temperature decreases with increasing MW of flexible linear segments but increases with increasing MW of stiff segments. Vitrimer reconfigurability is therefore influenced not only by the energetics of bond exchange for a given network density, but also the entropy of polymer chains within the network.

Membrane Proteins Have Distinct Fast Internal Motion and Residual Conformational Entropy

Abstract The internal motions of integral membrane proteins have largely eluded comprehensive experimental characterization. Here the fast side‐chain dynamics of the α‐helical sensory rhodopsin II and the β‐barrel outer membrane protein W have been investigated in lipid bilayers and detergent micelles by solution NMR relaxation techniques. Despite their differing topologies, both proteins have a similar distribution of methyl‐bearing side‐chain motion that is largely independent of membrane mimetic. The methyl‐bearing side chains of both proteins are, on average, more dynamic in the ps–ns timescale than any soluble protein characterized to date. Accordingly, both proteins retain an extraordinary residual conformational entropy in the folded state, which provides a counterbalance to the absence of the hydrophobic effect. Furthermore, the high conformational entropy could greatly influence the thermodynamics underlying membrane‐protein functions, including ligand binding, allostery, and signaling.

High‐Entropy Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes Enabling Stable All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) are essential for bulk‐type solid‐state battery (SSB) applications. Multicomponent SEs are recently attracting attention for their favorable charge‐transport properties, however a thorough understanding of how configurational entropy (ΔS conf ) affects ionic conductivity is lacking. Here, we successfully synthesized a series of halogen‐rich lithium argyrodites with the general formula Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl x Br 1.5‐x (0≤x≤1.5). Using neutron powder diffraction and 31 P magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the S 2− /Cl − /Br − occupancy on the anion sublattice was quantitatively analyzed. We show that disorder positively affects Li‐ion dynamics, leading to a room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 22.7 mS cm −1 (9.6 mS cm −1 in cold‐pressed state) for Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 (ΔS conf =1.98R). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that configurational entropy of the anion sublattice correlates with ion mobility. Our results indicate the possibility of improving ionic conductivity in ceramic ion conductors by tailoring the degree of compositional complexity. Moreover, the Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 SE allowed for stable cycling of single‐crystal LiNi 0.9 Co 0.06 Mn 0.04 O 2 (s‐NCM90) composite cathodes in SSB cells, emphasizing that dual‐substituted lithium argyrodites hold great promise in enabling high‐performance electrochemical energy storage.

Holographic Entropy Relations

Abstract We develop a framework for the derivation of new information theoretic quantities which are natural from a holographic perspective. We demonstrate the utility of our techniques by deriving the tripartite information (the quantity associated to monogamy of mutual information) using a set of abstract arguments involving bulk extremal surfaces. Our arguments rely on formal manipulations of surfaces and not on local surgery or explicit computation of entropies through the holographic entanglement entropy prescriptions. As an application, we show how to derive a family of similar information quantities for an arbitrary number of parties. The present work establishes the foundation of a broader program that aims at the understanding of the entanglement structures of geometric states for an arbitrary number of parties. We stress that our method is completely democratic with respect to bulk geometries and is equally valid in static and dynamical situations. While rooted in holography, we expect that our construction will provide a useful characterization of multipartite correlations in quantum field theories.

Dual‐Functional High‐Entropy Polymer Exhibiting Giant Cross‐Energy Couplings at Low Fields

A key component of cooling devices is the transfer of entropy from the cold load to heat sink. An electrocaloric (EC) polymer capable of generating both large electrocaloric effect (ECE) and substantial electroactuation can enable EC cooling devices to pump heat without external mechanisms, resulting in compact designs and enhanced efficiency. However, achieving both high ECE and significant electroactuation remains challenging. Herein, it is demonstrated that poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene‐double bond) [P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE‐DB)] tetrapolymers can simultaneously generate high electrocaloric effects and electroactuations under low fields. These P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE‐DB) tetrapolymers are synthesized through the dehydrochlorination of P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE) terpolymer. By facile tuning the composition of the initial terpolymer to avoid pure relaxor state, tetrapolymers with optimal DB compositions are achieved, near the critical endpoint of normal ferroelectric phase with diffused phase transition. The nearly vanishing energy barriers between the nonpolar to polar phases result in a strong electrocaloric response and significant electroactuation. Specifically, the P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE‐DB) tetrapolymer exhibits an EC entropy change Δ S of 100 J kg −1 K −1 under 100 MV m −1 : comparable to state‐of‐the‐art (SOA) EC polymers, while delivering nearly twice the electroactuation of the SOA EC polymers. This work presents a general strategy for developing EC materials that combine large electrocaloric effect and electroactuation at low electric fields.

Entropy production far from equilibrium in a chiral charged plasma in the presence of external electromagnetic fields

We report on the time evolution of a charged strongly coupled N = 4 SYM plasma with an axial anomaly subjected to strong electromagnetic fields. The evolution of this plasma corresponds to a fully backreacted asymptotically AdS 5 solution to the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. We explore the evolution of the axial current and production of axial charges. As an application we show that after a sufficiently long time both the entropy and the holographic entanglement entropy of a strip-like topology (both parallel to and transverse to the flow of axial current) grow linearly in time.

Cardy expansion of 3d superconformal indices and corrections to the dual black hole entropy

We consider the superconformal index of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric field theories computed via localization on S 1 × S 2 . We systematically develop an expansion where the ratio of the radius of S 1 to the radius of S 2 is taken very small — a Cardy-like expansion. We emphasize the sub-leading structures in this Cardy-like expansion as well as their interplay with the large-N limit for theories with gauge group of the form product of U(N) factors. We demonstrate that taking the large-N limit first leads to an expression for the effective action yielding the index that only includes terms proportional to 1/β and powers of β i=0,1,2 where β is the ratio of radii. As we depart from the β → 0 limit for finite N, we find indications of non-perturbative contributions of the form e –1/β . We present an explicit evaluation of the superconformal index for the ABJM theory in the large-N limit that is exact in β up to non-perturbative corrections. For the ABJM theory we explore the implications of the Cardy-like expansion for corrections to the entropy of the rotating, electricallly charged, asymptotically AdS 4 dual black hole. Interestingly, we find a closed form for the entropy that includes all perturbative corrections in β and takes the form of the leading order expression but with shifted charges.

Microscopic entropy of rotating electrically charged AdS 4 black holes from field theory localization

We employ supersymmetric localization to determine the exact partition function of 3d N = 2 gauge theories on a background given by a round S 2 fibered over a circle and certain complexified background fields. The Coulomb branch localization locus includes monopole configurations, and the partition function reduces to a matrix model. We consider the partition function of the ABJM theory on this background as an explicit case. We verify that the large-N limit of the ABJM theory partition function produces, in the Cardy limit, the entropy function of the dual rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS 4 supersymmetric black holes and thus provides a microscopic explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Living on the edge: a non-perturbative resolution to the negativity of bulk entropies

Lin, Maldacena, Rozenberg, and Shan (LMRS) presented a new information paradox in black hole physics by noticing that the entanglement and Rényi entropies in a two-sided black hole can become negative when the geometry contains a very large number of matter excitations behind the black hole horizon. While originally this puzzle was presented in the context of BPS two-sided black holes in two-dimensional supergravity, the negativity in fact persists for more general two-sided black holes in the presence of a large number of matter excitations. Since the entanglement and Rényi entropies in ordinary quantum systems cannot be negative, resolving this puzzle is a necessary step towards understanding the quantum mechanical description of black holes. In this paper, we explain how to address the entanglement negativity puzzle, both in the original setting discussed by LMRS and in more general non-supersymmetric settings, by summing over all non-perturbative contributions to the gravitational path integral. We then interpret this result from the point of view of a dual matrix integral, which we use to extend our analysis beyond the regime of validity of the genus re-summation performed in the gravitational path integral. In this regime, positivity is rescued by new saddles of the matrix integral, a one-eigenvalue instanton and a two-eigenvalue instanton. Finally, we formulate a similar puzzle and its resolution using random tensor network techniques.

Entanglement entropy and the colored Jones polynomial

We study the multi-party entanglement structure of states in Chern-Simons theory created by performing the path integral on 3-manifolds with linked torus boundaries, called link complements. For gauge group SU(2), the wavefunctions of these states (in a particular basis) are the colored Jones polynomials of the corresponding links. We first review the case of U(1) Chern-Simons theory where these are stabilizer states, a fact we use to re-derive an explicit formula for the entanglement entropy across a general link bipartition. We then present the following results for SU(2) Chern-Simons theory: (i) The entanglement entropy for a bipartition of a link gives a lower bound on the genus of surfaces in the ambient S3 separating the two sublinks. (ii) All torus links (namely, links which can be drawn on the surface of a torus) have a GHZ-like entanglement structure — i.e., partial traces leave a separable state. By contrast, through explicit computation, we test in many examples that hyperbolic links (namely, links whose complements admit hyperbolic structures) have W-like entanglement — i.e., partial traces leave a non-separable state. (iii) Finally, we consider hyperbolic links in the complexified SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory, which is closely related to 3d Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. In the limit of small Newton constant, we discuss how the entanglement structure is controlled by the Neumann-Zagier potential on the moduli space of hyperbolic structures on the link complement.

Replica wormholes and the entropy of Hawking radiation

The information paradox can be realized in anti-de Sitter spacetime joined to a Minkowski region. In this setting, we show that the large discrepancy between the von Neumann entropy as calculated by Hawking and the requirements of unitarity is fixed by including new saddles in the gravitational path integral. These saddles arise in the replica method as complexified wormholes connecting different copies of the black hole. As the replica number n → 1, the presence of these wormholes leads to the island rule for the computation of the fine-grained gravitational entropy. We discuss these replica wormholes explicitly in two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to matter.

Time dependence of reflected entropy in rational and holographic conformal field theories

We calculate the time dependence of the reflected entropy of two disconnected regions after a global quench in (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theories and in large temperature limit. For rational conformal field theories, we find that the time evolution of the reflected entropy is the same as that of the mutual information. We get the same result for holographic theories in the limit where the separation between disconnected regions is much smaller than their respective sizes. We discuss how this result is consistent with the quasi-particle picture of Calabrese and Cardy.

Subregion entropy for the doubly-holographic global black string

We study the growth of entanglement entropy in a doubly holographic model of gravity for a spherical AdS black hole. Compared to previous work, which was limited to the case of planar black holes, this introduces an extra scale to the problem. This allows us to analyze the interplay between the reorganization of entanglement entropy due to island formation and the onset of the Hawking-Page phase transition and to find the appearance of a new critical black hole radius unrelated to the thermodynamics. We also find that the geometry of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface capturing the physics of islands exhibits drastically different behavior than in the planar case.

Geometric entropies and their Hamiltonian flows

In holographic theories, the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) area operator plays a key role in our understanding of the emergence of semiclassical Einstein-Hilbert gravity. When higher derivative corrections are included, the role of the area is instead played by a more general functional known as the geometric entropy. It is thus of interest to understand the flow generated by the geometric entropy on the classical phase space. In particular, the fact that the associated flow in Einstein-Hilbert or Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity induces a relative boost between the left and right entanglement wedges is deeply related to the fact that gravitational dressing promotes the von Neumann algebra of local fields in each wedge to type II. This relative boost is known as a boundary-condition-preserving (BCP) kink-transformation. In a general theory of gravity (with arbitrary higher-derivative terms), it is straightforward to show that the flow continues to take the above geometric form when acting on a spacetime where the HRT surface is the bifurcation surface of a Killing horizon. However, the form of the flow on other spacetimes is less clear. In this paper, we use the manifestly-covariant Peierls bracket to explore such flows in two-dimensional theories of JT gravity coupled to matter fields with higher derivative interactions. The results no longer take a purely geometric form and, instead, demonstrate new features that should be expected of such flows in general higher derivative theories. We also show how to obtain the above flows using Poisson brackets.

Properties of the contraction map for holographic entanglement entropy inequalities

We present a deterministic way of finding contraction maps for candidate holographic entanglement entropy inequalities modulo choices due to actual degeneracy. We characterize its complexity and give an argument for the completeness of the contraction map proof method as a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of an entropy inequality for holographic entanglement.

Microscopic entropy of AdS3 black holes revisited

A bstract We revisit the microscopic description of AdS 3 black holes in light of recent progress on their higher dimensional analogues. The grand canonical partition function that follows from the AdS 3 /CFT 2 correspondence describes BPS and nearBPS black hole thermodynamics. We formulate an entropy extremization principle that accounts for both the black hole entropy and a constraint on its charges, in close analogy with asymptotically AdS black holes in higher dimensions. We are led to interpret supersymmetric black holes as ensembles of BPS microstates satisfying a charge constraint that is not respected by individual states. This interpretation provides a microscopic understanding of the hitherto mysterious charge constraints satisfied by all BPS black holes in AdS. We also develop thermodynamics and a nAttractor mechanism of AdS 3 black holes in the nearBPS regime.

Nonrenormalization theorem for $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) interface entropy

We derive a formula for the half-BPS interface entropy between any pair of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories on the same conformal manifold. This generalizes the diastasis formula derived in [1] for $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) theories, which is restricted to the conformal submanifolds generated by either chiral or twisted chiral multiples of $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) supersymmetry. To derive the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) formula, we use the fact that the conformal manifold of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories is symmetric and quaternionic-Kähler and that its isotropy group contains the SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) external automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) superconformal algebra. As an application of the formula, we prove a supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem, which explains the observation in [2] that the interface entropy for half-BPS Janus solutions in type IIB supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 coincides with the corresponding quantity in their free conformal field limits.

Wormhole calculus, replicas, and entropies

We investigate contributions of spacetime wormholes, describing baby universe emission and absorption, to calculations of entropies and correlation functions, for example those based on the replica method. We find that the rules of the “wormhole calculus”, developed in the 1980s, together with standard quantum mechanical prescriptions for computing entropies and correlators, imply definite rules for limited patterns of connection between replica factors in simple calculations. These results stand in contrast with assumptions that all topologies connecting replicas should be summed over, and call into question the explanation for the latter. In a “free” approximation baby universes introduce probability distributions for coupling constants, and we review and extend arguments that successive experiments in a “parent” universe increasingly precisely fix such couplings, resulting in ultimately pure evolution. Once this has happened, the nontrivial question remains of how topology-changing effects can modify the standard description of black hole information loss.
