Bias control for a memory device

Methods, systems, and devices for bias control for a memory device are described. A memory system may store indication of whether data is coherent. In some examples, the indication may be stored as metadata, where a first value indicates that the data is not coherent and a second value or a third value indicate that the data is coherent. When a processing unit or other component of the memory system processes a command to access data, the memory system may operate according to a device bias mode when the indication is the first value, and according to a host bias mode when the indication is the second value or the third value.

Multimodal photon and neutron imaging devices with fast event-by-event multisampling readout and optimized particle type discrimination

A particle imaging method for distinguishing between types of incident particles, such as neutrons, photons, and alphas, and improving the position resolution of particle imaging devices with matrix readout. The method includes high frequency multisampling readout electronics that provides the sequences of multiple measurements for each detected event, resulting in recorded detailed waveform information describing the signals. Such detailed information is used to approximate each signal waveform with a parameterized function in which the extracted parameter sets determine the type of the incident particle in an optimized fashion. The detailed event-by-event multisampling information for each signal readout channel in the matrix readout of the radiation imaging devices improves and optimizes the position resolution for variable shapes of the signals. Such devices can be used in mixed radiation fields, creating a new class of multimodal photon and neutron imagers.

Two-phase separator device for removing condensate or particulate from a gas stream

This disclosure provides a two-phase separator device for separating condensate or particulate from a gas stream. In some implementations, the separator device removes water from air and may operate under micro-gravity conditions. The gas stream flows through the two-phase separator device and passes through a rotatable vane assembly along a flow path without being redirected in another flow path. Condensate or particulate in the gas stream is impacted by a plurality of vanes of the rotatable vane assembly, and the condensate is captured by features formed within the plurality of vanes. The captured condensate is accelerated radially outwardly along the each of the plurality of vanes towards a sloped inner wall, and further moved along the sloped inner wall in a direction against the flow path of the gas stream during rotation.

Device-Centric Ransomware Detection using Machine Learning-Based Memory Forensics for Smart Inverters

Ransomware attacks are the fastest-growing form of cyberattacks worldwide. Recently, ransomware attacks have targeted industrial control systems (ICSs), including power grids. Lessons learned from recent incidents in ICSs show that ransomware groups can deliver ransomware into not only the organization’s control servers, but also the operational technology (OT) devices such as smart inverters and smart grid devices. This paper proposes a machine learning (ML)- based memory forensics method enabling the detection of ransomware binaries stored in the memory of a commercial smart inverter. Device firmware binary files are extracted from a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) flash memory, and samples of both benign and ransomware binaries are generated by a binary manipulation method and a real-world ransomware encryption, separately. A deep transfer learning (DTL) method is used to retrain a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based ransomware detection algorithm using the generated samples. The experimental result validates that the proposed ML-based memory forensics method can accurately detect ransomware files.

Assessing Customer Experience and Business Models around Price-to-Device Communication and Smart Control Pathways in CalFlexHub

California is facing three major challenges in electrical grid operation: renewable overgeneration, steep evening ramping, and growing peak demand. The state has identified dynamic retail price response as a key strategy evidenced by CPUC’s Dynamic Rates proceeding and CEC’s Load Management Standards. Furthermore, the CEC launched a $16M “California Load Flexibility Research and Deployment Hub (CalFlexHub)” administered by Berkeley Lab to accelerate price-response flexible load technologies in buildings and EV charging. There are more than 16 laboratory and field demonstration projects in CalFlexHub, each demonstrating innovative automated price-response technologies. CalFlexHub tests various pathways through which hourly price signals and triggered control commands are communicated to load-flexible devices such as smart thermostats, heat pumps, water heaters, and EVs. We identified seven unique communication and control pathways, which involve combinations of third-party cloud, device OEM’s cloud, building central gateway, and local controller in between the price server and the load-flexible devices. It is important for utilities and policy makers to understand the long-term implications of each pathway in designing future programs and creating related policies and mandates for market transformation. We propose an evaluation framework including the following aspects: ● Functionality: connectivity and uptime, resilience, and optimization; ● Customer experience: simplicity in setup, troubleshooting support, continuity, customer choice, first cost, and ongoing cost; ● Business model and scalability: advance interoperability, holistic solution, bridge unique gap, customer base, and value streams and pricing structures. In this paper, we identify emerging business models associated with each communication pathway and discuss their positive features and challenges from the above aspects.

Conceptual Design of Neutron Sensor Qualification Device

The Advanced Sensors and Instrumentation Program at Idaho National Laboratory has been formulating strategies to qualify sensors for use in nuclear environments, particularly in irradiation experiments and advanced reactors. When qualifying neutron sensors for use in high-temperature environments, the wide range of neutron flux levels and representative energy spectra presents significant challenges. This paper discusses the development of the Neutron Sensor Qualification Device (NQD), which is designed to test neutron sensors in high temperature controlled environments with known neutron spectra, addressing the spatial and spectral complexities of neutron fluxes in reactor cores. The proposed NQD will be situated in the exposure room at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, thus affording a unique capability to expose sensors to high neutron and gamma fluxes. To achieve thermal control, the device will utilize a radiation-hardened tube furnace, accommodating multiple sensors and neutron activation dosimetry wires. Titanium, iron, and cobalt dosimeter wires are chosen from the American Society for Testing and Materials and International Reactor Dosimetry and Fusion File libraries as references for providing energy-dependent fluence measurements. The design ensures precise sensor positioning to minimize mutual shielding and flux perturbation, which are evaluated via Monte Carlo N particle Transport Code (MCNP) simulations. These simulations have informed the development of guidelines on sensor placement within the NQD. The NQD is essential to the qualification of neutron sensors for advanced reactor technologies. It enables controlled testing of a statistically significant number of sensors, thereby supporting assessments of sensor performance across various neutron flux levels and temperatures. This paper highlights the detailed planning for the NQD prototype, along with its inaugural irradiation (scheduled for fiscal year [FY] 2025). The results from this initial testing will be fundamental in evaluating the device’s performance and establishing measurement uncertainty for in-pile neutron sensor measurements.

Group-III nitride devices and systems on IBAD-textured substrates

A multilayer structure including a hexagonal epitaxial layer, such as GaN or other group III-nitride (III-N) semiconductors, a <111>oriented textured layer, and a non-single crystal substrate, and methods for making the same. The textured layer has a crystalline alignment preferably formed by the ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) texturing process and can be biaxially aligned. The in-plane crystalline texture of the textured layer is sufficiently low to allow growth of high quality hexagonal material, but can still be significantly greater than the required in-plane crystalline texture of the hexagonal material. The IBAD process enables low-cost, large-area, flexible metal foil substrates to be used as potential alternatives to single-crystal sapphire and silicon for manufacture of electronic devices, enabling scaled-up roll-to-roll, sheet-to-sheet, or similar fabrication processes to be used. The user is able to choose a substrate for its mechanical and thermal properties, such as how well its coefficient of thermal expansion matches that of the hexagonal epitaxial layer, while choosing a textured layer that more closely lattice matches that layer. Electronic devices such as LEDs can be manufactured from such structures. Because the substrate can act as both a reflector and a heat sink, transfer to other substrates, and use of external reflectors and heat sinks, is not required, greatly reducing costs. Large area devices such as light emitting strips or sheets may be fabricated using this technology.

Material Selection and Heat Transfer Model for PTUHS Device

The Path to Ultimate Heat Sink Device (PTUHS) is a passive safety system that utilizes a radiative heat transfer valve to control the rate at which heat is removed from a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and dispersed into surrounding soil. The material selection for the PTUHS device is investigated, where the thermophysical properties are either maximized or minimized bases on what section of the PTUHS that material is being used for. Final recommendations of material choice are then presented. The heat transfer model of the PTUHS device is solved in ABAQUS, where a normal operating conditions and SCRAM conditions are solved. These temperature maps and heat flux of the system show the system's ability, where minimal heat is lost during normal operating conditions and system failure in a SCRAM scenario due to temperatures that were reached.
