Analysis of Tank 38H (HTF-38-26-16, -17), Tank 43H (HTF 43-26-18, -19) and Tank 22 (HTF-22-26-20, -21) Samples for Support of the Enrichment Control and Corrosion Control Programs

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) analyzed samples from Tank 38H, Tank 43H and Tank 22H to support the Enrichment Control Program (ECP) and Corrosion Control Program (CCP). The results indicate the concentrations of most soluble species in the Tank 38H surface sample are ~ 76% of the concentrations in the previous Tank 38H surface sample. The current Tank 38H subsurface sample is a clear solution with soluble species that are ~ 70% of the concentrations in the previous Tank 38H subsurface. Significant differences in the concentrations of major components between the current Tank 38H surface and subsurface samples indicate stratification of solution species between these two locations within Tank 38H.

Transcript and blood-microbiome analysis towards a blood diagnostic tool for goats affected by Haemonchus contortus

The Alpine goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is parasitized by the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contortus). Hematological parameters from transcript and metagenome analysis in the host are reflective of infestation. We explored comparisons between blood samples of control, infected, infected zoledronic acid-treated, and infected antibody (anti-γδ T cells) treated wethers under controlled conditions. Seven days post-inoculation (dpi), we identified 7,627 transcripts associated with the different treatment types. Microbiome measurements at 7 dpi revealed fewer raw read counts across all treatments and a less diverse microbial flora than at 21 dpi. This study identifies treatment specific transcripts and an increase in microflora abundance and diversity as wethers age. Further, F/B ratio reflect health, based on depression or elevation above thresholds defined by the baseline of non-infected controls. Forty Alpine wethers were studied where blood samples were collected from five goats in four treatment groups on 7 dpi and 21 dpi. Transcript and microbiome profiles were obtained using the Partek Flow (St. Louis, Missouri, USA) software suites pipelines. Inflammation comparisons were based on the Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratios that are calculated as well as the reduction of microbial diversity.

Multispectral signatures in relation to ground control signatures using nested sampling approach

The author has identified the following signficant results. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using ERTS-1 MSS imagery for spot transmission measurements on selected sites. Using the 15-unit gray scale on the 70 mm positive imagery as the base of comparison, a correlation was made between the transmittance measured at each site on the imagery and the radiance values (counts) recorded on CCT tape by the spacecraft over the same sites. The imagery was enlarged by a 750-watt projector and focused on a white cardboard screen 6 meters from the screen. Observations were made on 30 sub-sites which were pre-selected for their differing image brightness and total area; all are dried pond beds. Observations were also made on average gray backgrounds and a small lake. There was a very good correlation between the density values obtained from projected imagery and radiance values received by the detector on the spacecraft. A shorter experiment time and closer integration of gray scale and site readings would avoid the variation in lamp intensities that occurred.

Multispectral signatures in relation to ground control signature using nested sampling approach

The author has identified the following significant results. Principal effort has been on the development of a PDP-10 software package to read the CCT tapes more cheaply and rapidly. This is 90% completed and debugged. A shade print example of Treasure Island is provided. Stanford area was overflown with the U-2 as an add-on photographic mission to help fill in record-gaps in ERTS-1 overpass which was clouded out.

Multispectral signatures in relation to ground control signature using nested sampling approach

The author has identified the following significant results. In a cooperative study with USGS personnel, it has been possible to detect a 1.5 by 1 mile anomaly on ERTS CCT data, in the pine-covered mountains of western Nevada. This anomalous area is about 3-5 times larger than that of the known geobotanical anomaly which lies centrally within the area. The site has been studied on the ground and bi-directional reflectances, relative to BaS04 obtained for 40 trees, using both in-vivo techniques (similar to cherry picker operations) and field determinations of cut branches. The anomaly can be seen best by color transparencies made from 5/4, 6/4, 7/4 ratioed digital data, the 3 ratios each being coded by one of 3 colors (blue, green, and red).

Some effects of digital sampling on orbiter flight control system operation

An entry dynamic stability ground test of the OV102 Space Shuttle Orbiter revealed some small amplitude oscillatory output of the flight control system which could have constrained flight of the STS-1 mission. These limit-cycle-type outputs were attributed to a combination of rigid body motion of the Orbiter on its landing gear and some interesting effects of its digital flight control system. These effects included frequency aliasing and phenomena associated with digital quantitization of low amplitude sensor signals. The digital effects suggest significant improvements possible in future designs.

Direct Adaptive Control Of An Industrial Robot

Decentralized direct adaptive control scheme for six-jointed industrial robot eliminates part of overall computational burden imposed by centralized controller and degrades performance of robot by reducing sampling rate. Control and controller-adaptation laws based on observed performance of manipulator: no need to model dynamics of robot. Adaptive controllers cope with uncertainties and variations in robot and payload.

Laser-induced fluorescence of space-exposed polyurethane

The object of this work was to utilize laser-induced fluorescence technique to characterize several samples of space-exposed polyurethane. These samples were flown on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), which was in a shuttle-like orbit for nearly 6 years. Because of our present work to develop laser-induced-fluorescence inspection techniques for polymers, space-exposed samples and controls were lent to us for evaluation. These samples had been attached to the outer surface of LDEF; therefore, they were subjected to thermal cycling, solar ultraviolet radiation, vacuum, and atomic oxygen. It is well documented that atomic oxygen and ultraviolet exposure have detrimental effects on many polymers. This was a unique opportunity to make measurements on material that had been naturally degraded by an unusual environment. During our past work, data have come from artificially degraded samples and generally have demonstrated a correlation between laser-induced fluorescence and tensile strength or elasticity.

Organic and inorganic contamination control approaches for return sample investigation on Mars 2020

The Mars 2020 Rover mission will have the capability to collect and cache samples for potential Mars sample return. Specifically, the sample caching system (SCS) is designed for coring Mars samples and acquiring regolith samples as well as handling, sealing and caching on Mars. As the potential first Martian samples that could be returned to Earth, assuring low levels of terrestrial contamination is of the utmost concern. In developing the SCS, the project prioritizes limiting sample contamination in organic, inorganic and biological areas. The focus of this paper is on the strategies being implemented to limit terrestrial organic and inorganic contamination in the samples.

Development of a liquid-helium free cryogenic sample holder with mK temperature control for autonomous electron microscopy

The automated and autonomous cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) demands a sample holder capable of maintaining temperatures below 10 K with precise control, long holding times, and minimal helium use. Rising to this challenge, we initiated an ambitious project to develop a novel closed-cycle cryocooler-based cryogenic sample holder that operates without the use of liquid helium and the consumption of gaseous helium. Here, this article presents the design, construction, and experimental testing of the initial prototype, which achieves an ultimate temperature of 5.6 K with exceptional stability close to 1mK, while providing a wide temperature control range from 295 K to 5.6 K, marking a clear advancement in cryo-EM holder development. While the prototype was not designed for atomic resolution imaging and thus lacks a sturdy support system to mitigate mechanical vibrations from the cryocooler's pulsed tube, this innovative approach successfully demonstrates proof of concept. It offers unprecedented capabilities for state-of-the-art cryogenic microscopy and microanalysis in materials and biological sciences.
