Water soluble barrier coatings for washout tooling for a composite layup

A washout tooling for a composite layup is provided. The washout tooling comprises a casting mold having an exterior surface. The casting mold comprises a particulate material and a water-soluble binder. The casting mold is adapted to break down in the presence of an aqueous solution. The washout tooling further comprises a water-soluble coating layer overlying the exterior surface. The water-soluble coating layer is adapted to break down in the presence of an aqueous solution. The washout tooling further comprises a curable composite layer overlying the water-soluble coating layer. The water-soluble coating layer minimizes contact between the particulate material and the curable composite layer.

High-strength aluminum alloy coatings, deformation layers and methods of making the same

A high-strength aluminum alloy coating. The coating includes aluminum, 9R phase, fine grains, nanotwins, stacking faults, and a solute capable of stabilizing the 9R phase, the fine grains, and the stacking faults. A method of making a high-strength aluminum alloy coating on a substrate. The method includes, depositing the constituents of an aluminum alloy on a substrate such that the deposit forms a high-strength aluminum alloy coating containing 9R phase, fine grains, nanotwins, and stacking faults. A high-strength deformation layer in and on a casting of an aluminum alloy containing 9R phase, fine grains, nanotwins, stacking faults, and a solute capable of stabilizing the PR phase, the fine grains, and the stacking faults. A method of making a high-strength deformation layer in and on a casting of an aluminum alloy by deforming the alloy such that deformation layer contains 9R phase, fine grains, nanotwins, and stacking faults.

A04-0491 - Reduced Electrolyte Reactivity of Pitch-Carbon Coated Si Nanoparticles for Li-Ion Battery Anodes

Silicon-based anodes for Li-ion batteries (LIB) have the potential to increase the energy density over graphite-based LIB anodes. However, silicon anodes exhibit poor cycle and calendar lifetimes due to mechanical instabilities and high chemical reactivity with the carbonate-based electrolytes that are typically used in LIBs. In this work, we synthesize a pitch-carbon coated silicon nanoparticle composite active material for LIB anodes that exhibits reduced chemical reactivity with the carbonate electrolyte compared to an uncoated silicon anode. Silicon primary particle sizes <10 nm minimize micro-scale mechanical degradation of the anode composite, while conformal coatings of pitch-carbon minimized the parasitic reactions between the silicon and the electrolyte. When matched with a high voltage NMC622 cathode, the pitch-carbon coated Si anode retains -75% of its initial capacity over 1000 cycles. Efforts to increase the areal loading of the pitch-carbon coated silicon anodes to realize real energy density improvements over graphite anodes results in severe mechanical degradation on the electrode level. Developing procedures to engineer the architecture of the composite silicon anode may be a solution to this mechanical challenge.

Coated optical fiber and method of making same

A method is disclosed of making a coated optical fiber. The method may involve drawing a preform through a furnace to create a fiber having a desired diameter and cross sectional shape. The fiber is then drawn through a slurry, wherein the slurry includes elements including at least one of metallic elements, alloy elements or dielectric elements, and the slurry wets an outer surface of the fiber. As the fiber is drawn through the slurry, it is then drawn through a forming die to impart a wet coating having a desired thickness on an outer surface of the fiber. The wet fiber is then drawn through an oven or ovens configured to heat the wet coating sufficiently to produce a consolidated surface coating on the fiber as the fiber exits the oven or ovens.

System and method for optical fiber preform preparation via high-surface-area coating

The present disclosure relates to a method for forming a glass, ceramic or composite material. The method may involve initially forming a plurality of tubes and then performing a coating operation to coat the plurality of tubes with materials containing metal or metalloid elements, including inorganic compounds, organometallic compounds, or coordination complexes to form coated tubes. The method may further include performing at least one of a thermal operation or a thermochemical operation on the coated tubes to form a solid glass, ceramic, or composite structure with dimensions representing at least one of a rod or fiber.

Phosphor thermometry device for synchronized acquisition of luminescence lifetime decay and intensity on thermal barrier coatings

A phosphor thermometry device includes a laser that generates a laser pulse onto a thermal barrier coating (TBC) applied onto a substrate. A metallic bond coat layer is on the substrate. A ceramic top coat layer is on the bond coat layer and includes an undoped layer and a doped sensing layer having co-doped first and second rare-earth luminescent dopants that emit respective first and second different emission wavelengths upon excitation by the laser pulse. A detector receives reflected, convoluted luminescence signals from the TBC. First and second photomultiplier devices detect respective first and second different emission wavelengths of the convoluted luminescence signals. A controller receives and processes signals generated from respective first and second photomultiplier devices and determines luminescence lifetime decay and intensity variations for each of the respective first and second rare-earth luminescent dopants for temperature monitoring of the TBC.

Coating composition embodiments for use in investment casting methods

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a coating composition for use in investment casting. The coating composition embodiments provide a solidified coat that can be as a mold for casting castable materials and that is easily removed from the casted material using water. The coating composition embodiments disclosed herein are reusable and are non-toxic and exhibit high thermal stability.

Reduced-temperature sintering of spinel-type coatings and layers with metallic alloy powder precursors

A method of forming a spinel coating on a substrate is disclosed including the steps of coating at least a portion of the substrate with a precursor including an alloy powder, and sintering the precursor at a temperature of less than 1000 degrees Celsius to form the spinel coating. The alloy powder used for the precursor can include particles having a particle size of less than 10 micrometers. The method can be utilized to form spinel coatings as contact surfaces between electrodes and interconnects of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks.

Calcined Polyethyleneimine-Coated Optical Fibers for Distributed pH Monitoring at High Pressures and Temperatures

In the oil and gas, CO2 sequestration, H2 subsurface storage, and geothermal energy sectors, subsurface pH measurements are critical for monitoring the geochemical conditions and estimating potential corrosion rates of wellbore systems. Real-time pH measurements in these conditions are vital for detecting and predicting corrosion deterioration of wellbore components that may jeopardize the safety and continued operation of wellbore systems. Previous tests using metal oxide-based coatings (TiO2) provided strong responses at elevated temperatures and moderate pressure stability but provided poor differentiation between acidic and alkaline solutions. Building off the pH responsiveness of the TiO2 surface and known pH sensitivity of amine-based polymers, a coating based on the secondary amine polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI) was developed. As the polymer itself is highly water soluble and easily removed by aqueous solutions, the sensor coating was treated with a high temperature (500 °C) calcination procedure in air to convert it into a more stable oxidized coating capable of withstanding hot aqueous solutions without dissolving while retaining linear pH sensitivity from pH values between 2 and 11. The sensor performance was measured using optical transmission measurements in solutions of various pHs and using optical backscatter reflectometry for distributed pH sensing demonstration in wellbore-relevant pressures (up to 1,000 psi) and temperatures (80 °C).

Effects of Strain Gauge Coatings on Water Intrusion in Submerged Composite Coupon Testing

Marine energy structures are typically made using composite materials and are repeatedly loaded by currents and waves. Submersion and repeated loading lead to two environmental effects: moisture intrusion and mechanical fatigue. To understand their combined effects, submerged fatigue testing can be used. Submerged fatigue testing often requires submerged instrumentation to validate component manufacturing methods and models. Strain measurements are critical for understanding marine energy component loads. One common method for measuring strain is by using foil strain gauges, but the durability of strain gauges in submerged fatigue conditions is not well-understood. To increase strain gauge durability and protection from contamination, delamination, and water intrusion, strain gauge coatings may be applied over strain gauges and wire connections. In this study, strain gauges were adhered to composite coupons, coated, and mechanically tested in a water tank. Cycles to composite failure, cycles to strain gauge failure (SGF), strains, and SGF modes were used to measure the effects of strain gauge coatings on composite fatigue life and strain gauge durability. The coatings did not have significant effects on composite fatigue life or strain gauge durability. The methods developed and measurements taken at the coupon scale in this study will be used to inform methods and designs for subsequent submerged subcomponent testing, full-scale testing, and standards development. The benefits of designing marine energy structures to informed standards and designs are decreased lifetime costs and increased reliability and energy production, ultimately leading to a sustainable and low-carbon energy system.

Metal fluoride passivation coatings prepared by atomic layer deposition for Li-ion batteries

The fabrication of robust interfaces between transition metal oxides and non-aqueous electrolytes is one of the great challenges of lithium ion batteries. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of aluminum tungsten fluoride (AlWxFy) improves the electrochemical stability of LiCoO 2 . AlWxFy thin films were deposited by combining trimethylaluminum and tungsten hexafluoride. in-situ quartz crystal microbalance and transmission electron microscopy studies show that the films grow in a layer-by-layer fashion and are amorphous nature. Ultrathin AlWxFy coatings (<10 Å) on LiCoO 2 significantly enhance stability relative to bare LiCoO 2 when cycled to 4.4 V. The coated LiCoO 2 exhibited superior rate capability (up to 400 mA/g) and discharge capacities at a current of 400 mA/g were 51% and 92% of the first cycle capacities for the bare and AlWxFy coated materials. These results open new possibilities for designing ultrathin and electrochemically robust coatings of metal fluorides via ALD to enhance the stability of Li-ion electrodes.

Thermal Barrier Coatings Overview: Design, Manufacturing, and Applications in High-Temperature Industries

Today’s competitive world economy is creating an indispensable demand for increased efficiency of engineering components that operate in harsh environments (i.e., very high-temperature, corrosive, or neutron irradiation environments), for applications in the energy, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and power industries. Increased research is being done on thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for protecting such components, since the versatility of manufacturing techniques and the scale of deployment result in increased life, economics, performance, and durability. This review focuses on the advances that led to using TBCs for component life extension and, more recently, as an integral part of advanced component design for high-temperature and other types of harsh environments, such as those found in nuclear-related applications. Furthermore, factors that led to state-of-the-art advanced coating-fabrication techniques [e.g., electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD), plasma spray deposition, and electrophoretically deposited TBCs, as well as functionally graded material (FGM) manufacturing] have also been emphasized in current coating R&D. This review explores the current state of TBCs, i.e., the latest advances regarding their fabrication and performance, associated challenges, and recommendations for their future use in aerospace, nuclear, high-temperature, or otherwise harsh environments.

Analysis of combustion chamber deposit growth on temperature swing thermal barrier coatings in a spark ignition engine

Temperature swing thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have the potential to improve efficiency and performance through thermal management of the combustion chamber. However, the effects of combustion chamber deposits (CCDs) on the surface of the TBCs are unclear. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of CCD formation on a temperature swing TBC. A piston and a heat flux probe coated with a novel material are installed in a single-cylinder research engine at a low-load condition for 62.5 h to promote CCD growth. Every 12.5 h, the performance at a knock limited condition is assessed and thermophysical property measurements on the heat flux probe are performed. Net thermal efficiency increased by 0.4% absolute after 12.5 h relative to the baseline condition, but further CCD growth caused a dithering of efficiency between the 12.5 h and baseline points. The KLSA retarded consistently throughout this period. As a result, external property measurements with the coated heat flux probe showed an improvement in the thermophysical properties of the TBC/CCD layer.

Manipulation and statistical analysis of the fluid flow of polymer semiconductor solutions during meniscus-guided coating

Recent work in structure–processing relationships of polymer semiconductors have demonstrated the versatility and control of thin-film microstructure offered by meniscusguided coating (MGC) techniques. Here, we analyze the qualitative and quantitative aspects of solution shearing, a model MGC method, using coating blades augmented with arrays of pillars. The pillars induce local regions of high strain rates—both shear and extensional—not otherwise possible with unmodified blades, and we use fluid mechanical simulations to model and study a variety of pillar spacings and densities. We then perform a statistical analysis of 130 simulation variables to find correlations with three dependent variables of interest: thin-film degree of crystallinity and transistor field-effect mobilities for charge-transport parallel (Μ para ) and perpendicular (Μ perp ) to the coating direction. Our study suggests that simple fluid mechanical models can reproduce substantive correlations between the induced fluid flow and important performance metrics, providing a methodology for optimizing blade design.

Synergistic Coating-Alloy Development for Harsh Environments

The primary objective of the work was to demonstrate model alloy-coating combinations with: A. Improved oxidation resistance with a barrier coating by at least 2x vs. uncoated alloy; B. Uniform coating on a greater than 100:1 aspect ratio structure; and C. Expected reduction of lifecycle cost of a component of >25% based on customer inputs. All three objectives have been achieved.

In Situ Synthesis of Graphene-Coated Silicon Monoxide Anodes from Coa-Derived Humic Acid for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon monoxide (SiO) is attaining extensive interest amongst silicon-based materials due to its high capacity and long cycle life; however, its low intrinsic electrical conductivity and poor coulombic efficiency strictly limit its commercial applications. Here low-cost coal-derived humic acid (HA) is used as a feedstock to synthesize in-situ graphene-coated disproportionated SiO (D-SiO@G) anode with a facile method. HRTEM and XRD confirm the well-coated graphene layers on an SiO surface. Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) and X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectra analysis indicate that the graphene coating effectively hinders the side-reactions between the electrolyte and SiO particles . As a result, the D-SiO@G anode presents an initial discharge capacity of 1937.6 mAh g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 and an initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 78.2%. High reversible capacity (1023 mAh g -1 at 2.0 A g -1 ), excellent cycling performance ( 72.4% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g -1 ), and rate capability (774 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 ) results are substantial. Full coin cells assembled with LiFePO 4 electrodes and D-SiO@G electrodes display impressive rate performance. These results indicate a promising potential for practical use in high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Water-Surface Drag Coating: A New Route Toward High-Quality Conjugated Small-Molecule Thin Films with Enhanced Charge Transport Properties

Electronic properties of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films are largely determined by their morphologies and crystallinities. However, solution-processed conjugated small-molecule OSC thin films usually exhibit abundant grain boundaries and impure grain orientations because of complex fluid dynamics during solution coating. Here, a novel methodology, water-surface drag coating, is demonstrated to fabricate high-quality OSC thin films with greatly enhanced charge transport properties. This method utilizes the water surface to alter the evaporation dynamics of solution to enlarge the grain size, and a unique drag-coating process to achieve the unidirectional growth of organic crystals. Furthermore, using 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (Dif-TES-ADT) as an example, thin films with millimeter-sized single-crystal domains and pure crystallographic orientations are achieved, revealing a significant enhancement (4.7 times) of carrier mobility. More importantly, the resulting film can be directly transferred onto any desired flexible substrates, and flexible transistors based on the Dif-TES-ADT thin films show a mobility as high as 16.1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which represents the highest mobility value for the flexible transistors reported thus far. The method is general for the growth of various high-quality OSC thin films, thus opening up opportunities for high-performance organic flexible electronics.

Multifunctional Coatings on Sulfide‐Based Solid Electrolyte Powders with Enhanced Processability, Stability, and Performance for Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Sulfide‐based solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) exhibit many tantalizing properties including high ionic conductivity and favorable mechanical properties for next‐generation solid‐state batteries. Widespread adoption of these materials is hindered by their intrinsic instability under ambient conditions, which makes them difficult to process at scale, and instability at the Li||SSE and cathode||SSE interfaces, which limits cell performance and lifetime. Atomic layer deposition is leveraged to grow thin Al 2 O 3 coatings on Li 6 PS 5 Cl powders to address both issues simultaneously. These coatings can be directly grown onto Li 6 PS 5 Cl particles with negligible chemical modification of the underlying material and enable exposure of powders to pure and H 2 O‐saturated oxygen environments for ≥4 h with minimal reactivity, compared with significant degradation of the uncoated powder. Pellets fabricated from coated powders exhibit ionic conductivities up to 2× higher than those made from uncoated material, with a simultaneous decrease in electronic conductivity and significant suppression of chemical reactivity at the Li‐SSE interface. These benefits result in significantly improved room temperature cycle life at high capacity and current density. It is hypothesized that this enhanced performance derives from improved intergranular properties and improved Li metal adhesion. This work points to a completely new framework for designing active, stable, and scalable materials for next‐generation solid‐state batteries.
