First Measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) as an Inclusive Test of the b → c τ ν Anomaly

We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ℓ ) ≡ B ( B → X τ ν ) / B ( B → X ℓ ν ) , where ℓ indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb − 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ℓ ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) . Search for Baryon Number Violation in Top Quark Production and Decay Using Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for baryon number violating interactions in top quark production and decay. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and exactly one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the strength of baryon number violating couplings. For the first time the production of single top quarks via baryon number violating interactions is studied. This allows the search to set the most stringent constraints to date on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to a lepton, an up-type quark (𝑢 or 𝑐), and a down-type quark (𝑑, 𝑠, or 𝑏). The results improve the previous bounds by 3 to 6 orders of magnitude based on the fermion flavor combination of the baryon number violating interactions.

Search for Baryon-Number-Violating Processes in B − Decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − Final State

We report the results of the first search for B − decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − final state using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. The results are interpreted in terms of both direct baryon-number-violating B − decay and Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations which follow the standard model decay B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − . We observe no evidence for baryon number violation and set the 95% confidence-level upper limits on the ratio of baryon-number-violating and standard model branching fractions B ( B − → Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) / B ( B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) to be < 2.7 % and on the effective angular frequency of mixing ω in Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations to be < 0.76 ps − 1 (equivalent to τ mix > 1.3 ps ). Search for Rare b → d ℓ + ℓ − Transitions at Belle

We present the results of a search for the b → d ℓ + ℓ − flavor-changing neutral-current rare decays B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π + , 0 , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π 0 , ρ + ) μ + μ − using a 711 fb − 1 data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the range ( 3.8 – 47 ) × 10 − 8 depending on the decay channel. The obtained limits are the world’s best results. This is the first search for the channels B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + ) μ + μ − . Search for the Z Boson Decay to τ τ μ μ in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search for the Z boson decay to τ τ μ μ at the CERN LHC is presented, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . The data are compatible with the predicted background. For the first time, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level of 6.9 times the standard model expectation is placed on the ratio of the Z → τ τ μ μ to Z → 4 μ branching fractions. Limits are also placed on the six flavor-conserving four-lepton effective-field-theory operators involving two muons and two tau leptons, for the first time testing all such operators. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Study of the Decay and Production Properties of D s 1 ( 2536 ) and D s 2 * ( 2573 )

The e + e − → D s + D s 1 ( 2536 ) − and e + e − → D s + D s 2 * ( 2573 ) − processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946 GeV. The absolute branching fractions of D s 1 ( 2536 ) − → D ¯ * 0 K − and D s 2 * ( 2573 ) − → D ¯ 0 K − are measured for the first time to be ( 35.9 ± 4.8 ± 3.5 ) % and ( 37.4 ± 3.1 ± 4.6 ) % , respectively. The e + e − → D s + D s 1 ( 2536 ) − and e + e − → D s + D s 2 * ( 2573 ) − cross sections are measured, and a resonant structure at around 4.6 GeV with a width of 50 MeV is observed in both processes with a statistical significance of 7.2 σ and 15 σ , respectively. The state is observed for the first time in e + e − → D s + D s 2 * ( 2573 ) − and could be the Y ( 4626 ) found by the Belle oration in the D s + D s 1 ( 2536 ) − final state, since they have similar masses and widths. There is also evidence for a structure at around 4.75 GeV in both processes. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Evidence of h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η Decay and Search for h b ( 1 P , 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 with the Belle Detector

We report the first evidence for the h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η ] = ( 7.1 − 3.2 + 3.7 ± 0.8 ) × 10 − 3 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π 0 transitions of B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , and B [ h b ( 1 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4 fb − 1 data sample collected near the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 Decays to Λ h + h ′ − and Evidence for C P Violation in Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − Decays

A study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 decays to Λ h + h ′ − ( h ( ′ ) = π , K ) is performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λ b 0 → Λ c + ( → Λ π + ) π − decay as a control channel. The decays Λ b 0 → Λ π + π − and Ξ b 0 → Λ K − π + are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, C P asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for C P violation in the Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λ b 0 → N * + K − decay amplitude. The measured C P asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Observation of the Charmonium Decay η c → γ γ in J / ψ → γ η c

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decay η c → γ γ in J / ψ → γ η c is observed. We determine the product branching fraction B ( J / ψ → γ η c ) × B ( η c → γ γ ) = ( 5.23 ± 0.2 6 stat ± 0.3 0 syst ) × 10 − 6 . This result is consistent with the lattice QCD calculation ( 5.34 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 6 from HPQCD in 2023. By using the world-average values of B ( J / ψ → γ η c ) and the total decay width of η c , the partial decay width Γ ( η c → γ γ ) is determined to be ( 11.30 ± 0.5 6 stat ± 0.6 6 syst ± 1.1 4 ref ) keV , which deviates from the corresponding world-average value by 3.4 σ . Model-agnostic likelihood for the reinterpretation of the 𝐵 + → 𝐾 + ⁢$𝑣\bar{𝑣}$ measurement at Belle II

We recently measured the branching fraction of the 𝐵 + → 𝐾 + ⁢$𝑣\bar{𝑣}$ decay using 362 fb −1 of on-resonance 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collision data under the assumption of Standard Model kinematics, providing the first evidence for this decay. To facilitate future reinterpretations and maximize the scientific impact of this measurement, we publicly release the full analysis likelihood along with all necessary material required for reinterpretation under arbitrary theoretical models sensitive to this measurement. In this work, we demonstrate how the measurement can be reinterpreted within the framework of the weak effective theory. Using a kinematic reweighting technique in combination with the published likelihood, we derive marginal posterior distributions for the Wilson coefficients, construct credible intervals, and assess the goodness of fit to the Belle II data. For the weak effective theory Wilson coefficients, the posterior mode of the magnitudes |𝐶 VL +𝐶 VR |, |𝐶 SL +𝐶 SR |, and |𝐶 TL | corresponds to the point (11.3, 0.0, 8.2). The respective 95% credible intervals are [1.9, 16.2], [0.0, 15.4], and [0.0, 11.2].

Search for a narrow resonance with a mass between 10 and 70 GeV decaying to a pair of photons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The existence of a new spin-zero particle with a mass below the electroweak scale is predicted by several theoretical models. Searches for resonant production of photon pairs at the LHC are able to probe these models. We present a search for a narrow resonance produced through gluon fusion that decays into a pair of photons with an invariant mass between 10 and 70 GeV, using a proton-proton collision dataset from the CMS experiment. This dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 54.4 fb −1 , was recorded in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a newly introduced diphoton trigger that enabled exploration of the low-mass diphoton spectrum. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the gluon fusion production cross section and the branching fraction of the diphoton decay of a narrow resonance. An interpretation of these limits within an effective field theory framework for axionlike particles is also provided.

Semitauonic b-hadron decays: A lepton flavor universality laboratory

The study of lepton flavor universality violation (LFUV) in semitauonic b-hadron decays has become increasingly important in light of long-standing anomalies in their measured branching fractions, and the large datasets anticipated from the LHC experiments and Belle II. Here, in this review, a comprehensive survey of the experimental environments and methodologies for semitauonic LFUV measurements at the B factories and LHCb is undertaken, along with an overview of the theoretical foundations and predictions for a wide range of semileptonic decay observables. The future prospects of controlling systematic uncertainties down to the percent level, matching the precision of standard model (SM) predictions, are examined. Furthermore, new perspectives and caveats on combinations of the LFUV data are discussed and the world averages for the R(D(*)) ratios are revisited. Here it is demonstrated that different treatments for the correlations of uncertainties from D** excited states can vary the current 3σ tension with the SM within a 1σ range. Prior experimental overestimates of D**τν contributions may further exacerbate this. The precision of future measurements is also estimated; their power to exploit full differential information, and solutions to the inherent difficulties in self-consistent new physics interpretations of LFUV observables, are explored.

Averages of b-hadron, c-hadron, and $$\tau $$-lepton properties as of 2018: Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFLAV)

Abstract This paper reports world averages of measurements of b -hadron, c -hadron, and $$\tau $$ τ -lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavour Averaging Group using results available through September 2018. In rare cases, significant results obtained several months later are also used. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, $$C\!P$$ C P violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, and Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix elements.
