Foldable beam

Articulated beam becomes rigid triangular truss when deployed and is stored by folding it flat as it is heliced about cylinder. Beam is composed of longerons, diagonals, and scissors arms. Folding produces flat envelope that allows more beams to be stowed on cylinder than would be possible if beams did not fold flat.

Temperature anisotropy and beam type whistler instabilities

Whistler instabilities have been investigated for two different types; i.e., a temperature-anisotropy type instability and a beam-type instability. A comparison between the two types of whistler instabilities is made within the framework of linear theory. A transition from one type to the other is also discussed, which is an extension of the work on electrostatic beam and Landau instabilities performed by O'Neil and Malmberg (1968) for electromagnetic whistler instabilities. It is clarified that the essential source of the whistler instability is not beam kinetic energy but a temperature anisotropy, even for the beam-type whistler instability.

Analysis of spent beam refocusing to achieve optimum collector efficiency

A reasonable criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of spent beam refocusing is the reduction of spent beam turbulence. The rms deviation of particle angles where the angles are calculated from the ratio of radial velocity to axial velocity is one measure of beam turbulence. It is demonstrated that the angular deviation can be reduced by almost half in some magnetic field configurations. Experimental evidence indicates that beam processing of this type is most likely to yield an optimum collector efficiency.

An experimental-theoretical correlation study of non-linear bending and torsion deformations of a cantilever beam

An experimental study of the large deformation of a cantilevered beam under a gravity tip load has been made. The beam root is rotated so that the tip load is oriented at various angles with respect to the beam principal axes. Static twist and bending deflections of the tip and bending natural frequencies have been measured as a function of tip load magnitude and orientation. The experimental data are compared with the results of a recently developed non-linear structural theory. Agreement is reasonably good when bending deflections are small compared to the beam span, but systematic differences occur for larger deflections.

Diagnostic evaluations of a beam-shielded 8-cm mercury ion thruster

An engineering model thruster fitted with a remotely actuated graphite fiber polyimide composite beam shield was tested in a 3- by 6.5-meter vacuum facility for in-situ assessment of beam shield effects on thruster performance. Accelerator drain current neutralizer floating potential and ion beam floating potential increased slightly when the shield was moved into position. A target exposed to the low density regions of the ion beam was used to map the boundaries of energetic fringe ions capable of sputtering. The particle efflux was evaluated by measurement of film deposits on cold, heated, bare, and enclosed glass slides.

Ion beam sputter etching and deposition of fluoropolymers

Fluoropolymer etching and deposition techniques including thermal evaporation, RF sputtering, plasma polymerization, and ion beam sputtering are reviewed. Etching and deposition mechanism and material characteristics are discussed. Ion beam sputter etch rates for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were determined as a function of ion energy, current density and ion beam power density. Peel strengths were measured for epoxy bonds to various ion beam sputtered fluoropolymers. Coefficients of static and dynamic friction were measured for fluoropolymers deposited from ion bombarded PTFE.

Ion beam sputtering of fluoropolymers

Ion beam sputter processing rates as well as pertinent characteristics of etched targets and films are described. An argon ion beam source was used to sputter etch and deposit the fluoropolymers PTFE, FEP, and CTFE. Ion beam energy, current density, and target temperature were varied to examine effects on etch and deposition rates. The ion etched fluoropolymers yield cone or spire-like surface structures which vary depending upon the type of polymer, ion beam power density, etch time, and target temperature. Sputter target and film characteristics documented by spectral transmittance measurements, X-ray diffraction, ESCA, and SEM photomicrographs are included.

Orbiting molecular-beam laboratory

The composition of the atmosphere within the planned orbital envelope of the Space Shuttle and the velocity necessary to maintain a stable orbit within that envelope provide unique conditions for forming a high-purity, moderate energy beam (about 5 eV) of atomic oxygen. At 500 km, for example, atomic oxygen comprises approximately 90% of the atmosphere. Since the mean thermal speed of the ambient atomic oxygen is substantially less than the orbital speed, a high-purity beam can be generated by sweeping through the gas with a series of beam-forming truncated conical shells. Characteristics of the beam, including energy distribution, flux, and purity variation with orbital altitude and methods for lowering the mean energy, are presented. Gas-surface interaction experiments that have been proposed for this laboratory are also discussed.

Optical and electrical properties of ion beam textured Kapton and Teflon

Results are given for ion beam texturing of polyimide (Kapton) and fluorinated ethylene propylene (Teflon) by means of a 30-cm diam electron bombardment argon ion source. Ion beam-textured Kapton and Teflon surfaces are evaluated for various beam energies, current densities, and exposure times. The optical properties and sheet resistance are measured after each exposure. Provided in the paper are optical spectral data, resistivity measurements, calculated absorptance and emittance measurements, and surface structure SEM micrographs for various exposures to argon ions. It is found that Kapton becomes conducting and Teflon nonconducting when ion beam-textured. Textured Kapton exhibits large changes in the transmittance and solar absorptance, but only slight changes in reflectance. Surface texturing of Teflon may allow better adherence of subsequent sputtered metallic films for a high absorptance value. The results are valuable in spacecraft charging applications.

Ion beam divergence characteristics of three-grid accelerator systems

A comprehensive experimental investigation of the geometrical and operating conditions which affect most strongly the ion beam divergence of three-grid accelerator systems is presented. Three-grid accelerator systems are shown to offer significant improvements in ion beam focusing over two-grid accelerator systems. These improvements are greatest for low, but limited, net-to-total accelerating voltage ratio ranges and small screen-to-accelerator grid separation ratios (i.e., high perveance grid sets). Ion beam focusing gains are negligible at a net-to-total accelerating voltage ratio near unity. Low decelerator grid impingement currents and low ion beam divergence angles require that the decelerator hole diameter be about twenty five percent larger than the accelerator hole diameter, also that the decelerator grid be spaced as close as is practically possible to the accelerator grid.

Ion beam plume and efflux measurements of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster

Measurements of the ion beam plume and efflux constituents of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster have been carried out in the TRW 5 x 10 foot testing chamber. Charged components (ion beam plume) were measured with an array of movable position Faraday cups and retarding potential analyzers yielding both current density and particle energy determinations. Neutral components (ion beam efflux) were determined with a movable position ionization gauge. Measurements of the ion beam plume were performed for a thruster both with and without a sputter shield. Analysis of data in terms of normalized effluxes has been carried out and has been applied to an example calculation of efflux compatibility with a communications spacecraft.

Ion beam divergence characteristics of two-grid accelerator systems

The first comprehensive experimental investigation of two-grid accelerator systems is presented. A wide range of geometrical grid parameters and grid set operating conditions were investigated for their effect on ion beam divergence. Ion beam divergence was found to depend most strongly on normalized perveance per hole, grid separation ratio, net-to-total accelerating voltage ratio, and discharge-to-total accelerating voltage ratio variations. The graphical results contained herein provide guidelines for the design of ion accelerator systems. A general ion beam divergence angle correlation was developed to permit approximate beam divergence estimates, at parametric values other than those tested, of present grid set designs. Although argon was the main test gas used in this study, it is shown that the results are applicable to other propellants as well.

Adjusting an electron beam for drilling

Reticle contains two concentric circles: inner circle insures beam circularity and outer circle is guide to prevent beam from cutting workpiece clamp. Precise measurement of beam and clamp are required with old reticle. New reticle speeds up electron-beam drilling process by eliminating need to rotate eyepiece to make measurements against reticle scale.

Ion beam technology applications study

Specific perceptions and possible ion beam technology applications were obtained as a result of a literature search and contact interviews with various institutions and individuals which took place over a 5-month period. The use of broad beam electron bombardment ion sources is assessed for materials deposition, removal, and alteration. Special techniques examined include: (1) cleaning, cutting, and texturing for surface treatment; (2) crosslinking of polymers, stress relief in deposited layers, and the creation of defect states in crystalline material by ion impact; and (3) ion implantation during epitaxial growth and the deposition of neutral materials sputtered by the ion beam. The aspects, advantages, and disadvantages of ion beam technology and the competitive role of alternative technologies are discussed.

Environmental considerations for the microwave beam from a solar power satellite

Solar power satellite (SPS) systems in geosynchronous orbit are possible future energy sources. The SPS concept uses a highly focused microwave beam to transmit the energy to the earth. The microwave power transmission system parameters are summarized, emphasizing those parameters which may affect the earth's environment. Environmental impacts of the microwave beam are discussed. The power levels for the main beam, sidelobes, grating lobes, and ground receiving antenna reradiation patterns are presented. Ionospheric/microwave beam interaction studies, experimental and theoretical, are reviewed. Possible radio frequency interference sources and the magnitude of expected interference levels are discussed.
