Inverse Calculation of Burden Distribution Matrix Using B-spline Model Based PDF control in Blast Furnace Burden Charging Process

The inverse calculation of burden distribution matrix (BDM) is one of the most important challenges in the blast furnace operation in iron-making processes. In general, blast furnace consumes 65% of the total energy for the whole steel-making. Focusing on this practical challenge, this article proposes a new burden distribution spatial model in calculating burden charging process, and develops a B-spline approximation-based probability density function (PDF) control algorithm to assign the expected thickness distribution of burden layer and, thus, develops a new method for the required inverse calculation of BDM. First, a novel method for the thickness distribution of burden layer is given using B-spline model to produce an expected distribution shape subjected to a desired tracking within a specific spatial constraint. Then, according to the coexistence of continuous and bounded discrete variables in BDM, a novel hybrid optimization control method by combining integer programming and PDF tracking is further established for the effective inverse calculation of BDM. Finally, the proposed PDF-based iterative inverse calculation of BDM using B-spline models are tested using various data from industrial examples. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the proposed method is well suited to solve the BDM inverse calculation problem in practice.

Theoretical Correlation of Elemental Distribution of Nd and Pr in Ce-Fe-B Microstructure With Hard Magnetic Properties

Relatively resource-rich but property inferior-Ce-Fe-B magnet can be improved by partial replacement of Ce by Nd and/or Pr. In addition to the amount of Nd/Pr, their distribution profile in microstructure plays an important role. From our first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the substitution energy of Ce by Pr/Nd is negative in Ce 2 Fe 14 B (2:14:1) while that for laves phase, CeFe 2 is positive, implying that Nd/Pr stabilize 2:14:1 and suppress the formation of the CeFe 2 phase. Further, micromagnetic simulation indicates that homogenized distribution of Nd/Pr improves squareness of demagnetization curve, while core (Ce-rich)-shell (Nd/Pr-rich) 2:14:1 grain structure enhances coercivity. Magnetic properties of Ce-Fe-B can be optimized by manipulating distribution profile of chemical element in microstructure based on their subtle difference in thermodynamic property, which is an effective pathway to design optimized chemical composition and processing route for high-performance magnet.

Semileptonic form factors for $$B\rightarrow D^*\ell \nu $$ at nonzero recoil from $$2+1$$-flavor lattice QCD: Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations

Abstract We present the first unquenched lattice-QCD calculation of the form factors for the decay $$B\rightarrow D^*\ell \nu $$ B → D ∗ ℓ ν at nonzero recoil. Our analysis includes 15 MILC ensembles with $$N_f=2+1$$ N f = 2 + 1 flavors of asqtad sea quarks, with a strange quark mass close to its physical mass. The lattice spacings range from $$a\approx 0.15$$ a ≈ 0.15 fm down to 0.045 fm, while the ratio between the light- and the strange-quark masses ranges from 0.05 to 0.4. The valence b and c quarks are treated using the Wilson-clover action with the Fermilab interpretation, whereas the light sector employs asqtad staggered fermions. We extrapolate our results to the physical point in the continuum limit using rooted staggered heavy-light meson chiral perturbation theory. Then we apply a model-independent parametrization to extend the form factors to the full kinematic range. With this parametrization we perform a joint lattice-QCD/experiment fit using several experimental datasets to determine the CKM matrix element $$|V_{cb}|$$ | V cb | . We obtain $$\left| V_{cb}\right| = (38.40 \pm 0.68_{\text {th}} \pm 0.34_{\text {exp}} \pm 0.18_{\text {EM}})\times 10^{-3}$$ V cb = ( 38.40 ± 0 . 68 th ± 0 . 34 exp ± 0 . 18 EM ) × 10 - 3 . The first error is theoretical, the second comes from experiment and the last one includes electromagnetic and electroweak uncertainties, with an overall $$\chi ^2\text {/dof} = 126/84$$ χ 2 /dof = 126 / 84 , which illustrates the tensions between the experimental data sets, and between theory and experiment. This result is in agreement with previous exclusive determinations, but the tension with the inclusive determination remains. Finally, we integrate the differential decay rate obtained solely from lattice data to predict $$R(D^*) = 0.265 \pm 0.013$$ R ( D ∗ ) = 0.265 ± 0.013 , which confirms the current tension between theory and experiment.

Shotgun Immunoproteomic Approach for the Discovery of Linear B-Cell Epitopes in Biothreat Agents Francisella tularensis and Burkholderia pseudomallei

Peptide-based subunit vaccines are coming to the forefront of current vaccine approaches, with safety and cost-effective production among their top advantages. Peptide vaccine formulations consist of multiple synthetic linear epitopes that together trigger desired immune responses that can result in robust immune memory. The advantages of linear compared to conformational epitopes are their simple structure, ease of synthesis, and ability to stimulate immune responses by means that do not require complex 3D conformation. Prediction of linear epitopes through use of computational tools is fast and cost-effective, but typically of low accuracy, necessitating extensive experimentation to verify results. On the other hand, identification of linear epitopes through experimental screening has been an inefficient process that requires thorough characterization of previously identified full-length protein antigens, or laborious techniques involving genetic manipulation of organisms. In this study, we apply a newly developed generalizable screening method that enables efficient identification of B-cell epitopes in the proteomes of pathogenic bacteria. As a test case, we used this method to identify epitopes in the proteome of Francisella tularensis (Ft), a Select Agent with a well-characterized immunoproteome. Our screen identified many peptides that map to known antigens, including verified and predicted outer membrane proteins and extracellular proteins, validating the utility of this approach. We then used the method to identify seroreactive peptides in the less characterized immunoproteome of Select Agent Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp). This screen revealed known Bp antigens as well as proteins that have not been previously identified as antigens. Although B-cell epitope prediction tools Bepipred 2.0 and iBCE-EL classified many of our seroreactive peptides as epitopes, they did not score them significantly higher than the non-reactive tryptic peptides in our study, nor did they assign higher scores to seroreactive peptides from known Ft or Bp antigens, highlighting the need for experimental data instead of relying on computational epitope predictions alone. The present workflow is easily adaptable to detecting peptide targets relevant to the immune systems of other mammalian species, including humans (depending upon the availability of convalescent sera from patients), and could aid in accelerating the discovery of B-cell epitopes and development of vaccines to counter emerging biological threats.

HD 143811 AB b: A Directly Imaged Planet Orbiting a Spectroscopic Binary in Sco-Cen

We present confirmation of HD 143811 AB b, a substellar companion to spectroscopic binary HD 143811 AB through direct imaging with the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) and Keck NIRC2. HD 143811 AB was observed as a part of the GPI Exoplanet Survey in 2016 and 2019 and is a member of the Sco-Cen star formation region. The exoplanet is detected ∼430 mas from the host star by GPI. With two GPI epochs and one from Keck/NIRC2 in 2022, we confirm through common proper motion analysis that the object is bound to its host star. We derive an orbit with a semimajor axis of $64^{+32}_{-14}$ au and eccentricity $0.23^{+0.24}_{-0.16}$. Spectral analysis of the GPI H-band spectrum and NIRC2 L′ photometry provides additional proof that this object is a substellar companion. We compare the spectrum of HD 143811 AB b to PHOENIX stellar models and Exo-Radioactive-Convective Equilibrium Model (REM) exoplanet atmosphere models and find that Exo-REM models provide the best fits to the data. From the Exo-REM models, we derive an effective temperature of $1042^{+178}_{-132}$ K for the planet and translate the derived luminosity of the planet to a mass of 5.6 ± 1.1 M Jup assuming hot-start evolutionary models. HD 143811 AB b is the first directly imaged planet around a binary that is not on an ultrawide orbit. Future characterization of this object will shed light on the formation of planets around binary star systems.

FY23 status report on the development of new ASME Section III, Division 5 Class B rules

This report summarizes the work done in Fiscal Year 2023 on the development of the new American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5, Class B rules to address the gaps identified for high temperature reactor designs. The summary of the design-by-analysis strain limit evaluation and creep-fatigue damage assessment is presented. The proposed design-by-analysis creep-fatigue damage calculation approach uses a new elastic follow-up-based Isochronous Stress Strain Curve stress relaxation procedure. This approach captures the elastic follow-up generated due to interactions of components with adjacent components, supports, and other connections in the power plant. A set of sample problems are selected to validate the proposed design-by-analysis rules for creep-fatigue damage assessment. The proposed Class B rules are evaluated against the Class A elastic design rules, and the experimental data obtained from a family of Simplified Model Test based key-feature test results. The proposed Class B creep-fatigue damage assessment methodology yields conservative design cycles estimates compared to the experimental results.

Angular analysis of the rare decay $B_s^0$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$

An angular analysis of the rare decay B$^0_s$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb -1 . The observables describing the angular distributions of the decay B$^0_s$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$ are determined in regions of q 2 , the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

First observation of the decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 183 Hg and B(M 2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2 + isomeric state in 183 Hg was observed for the first time following the a decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 187 Pb produced in the 142 Nd( 50 Cr, 2p3n) reaction. Using $\alpha - \gamma$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) μs. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy M2 transition to the known 9/2 - member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2 - [514] band, followed by a 105-keV M1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(M2) >= 0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2 + isomer in 181 Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(M2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

Test of Lepton Universality in b → $s$$\ell$ + $\ell$ – Decays

The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using $B^+$ → $K^+$$\ell^+$$\ell^–$ and $B^0$ → $K^{*0}$$\ell^+$$\ell^–$ decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, q 2 . The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q 2 interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Evidence of a $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ Structure in $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$

An amplitude analysis of $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ system, named $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 , is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991$_{–10 –17}^{+12 +9}$ MeV/⁢c 2 and 105$_{–25 –23}^{+29 +17}$ MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 state is likely to be the isospin partner of the $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) + state, previously observed in the $J/ψK^+$ system of the $B^+$→$J/ψ$$\phi$$K^+$ decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The C P -violation parameters are measured to be S ψ K S 0 = 0.717 ± 0.013 ( stat ) ± 0.008 ( syst ) and C ψ K S 0 = 0.008 ± 0.012 ( stat ) ± 0.003 ( syst ) . This measurement of S ψ K S 0 represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle β to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the C P -violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Amplitude Analysis of the B 0 → K * 0 μ + μ − Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B 0 → K * 0 μ + μ − decay is presented using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb − 1 of p p collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. For the first time, the coefficients associated to short-distance physics effects, sensitive to processes beyond the standard model, are extracted directly from the data through a q 2 -unbinned amplitude analysis, where q 2 is the μ + μ − invariant mass squared. Long-distance contributions, which originate from nonfactorizable QCD processes, are systematically investigated, and the most accurate assessment to date of their impact on the physical observables is obtained. The pattern of measured corrections to the short-distance couplings is found to be consistent with previous analyses of b - to s -quark transitions, with the largest discrepancy from the standard model predictions found to be at the level of 1.8 standard deviations. The global significance of the observed differences in the decay is 1.4 standard deviations. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurement of $\tau _\text {L}$ using the ${B} _s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \eta$ decay mode

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ s in B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decays in ATLAS at 13 TeV

A measurement of the B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decay parameters using 80.5 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 Te proton–proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase ϕ s , the width difference Δ Γ s between the B$_s^0$ meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γ s . The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2fb -1 of 7 and 8 Te data, leading to the following: ϕs=-0.087±0.036(stat.)±0.021(syst.)rad ΔΓ s =0.0657±0.0043(stat.)±0.0037(syst.)ps -1 Γ s =0.6703±0.0014(stat.)±0.0018(syst.)ps -1 Results for ϕ s and Δ Γ s are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the ϕ s –Δ Γ s plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. ϕ s and Δ Γ s measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

A constitutive structural parameter c b for the work hardening behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

The mechanical behavior of Ti-6Al-4V produced by additive manufacturing processes is assessed as based on a model derived from the Kocks–Mecking relationship. A constitutive parameter c b is derived from a linear Kocks–Mecking relationship for the microstructure that is characteristic of the work hardening behavior. The formulation for c b is determined by considering the plastic strain between the strengths at the proportional limit and the plastic instability. In this way, the model accommodates the variation in work hardening behavior observed when evaluating material as produced and tested along different orientations. The modeling approach is presented and evaluated for the case of Ti-6Al-4V additively manufactured materials as tested under quasi-static uniaxial tension. It is found that different test specimen orientations, along with postbuild heat treatments, produce a change in the microstructure and plasticity behavior which can be accounted for in the corresponding change of the c b values.

BaCu 2 SiS 4 : A New Member of the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 Chalcogenide Family with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Abstract Noncentrosymmetric ternary and quaternary chalcogenides are studied as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the mid‐infrared region. Here, we report the synthesis of a new material BaCu 2 SiS 4 in the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 family ( A =divalent metal; B =monovalent metal; M =tetrel, Q =chalcogen), and discuss its crystal structure, thermal stability, optical behavior, and electronic structure. BaCu 2 SiS 4 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric chiral space group P 3 2 21 with lattice parameters a =6.1440(3) Å, c =15.3542(8) Å, V =501.95(6) Å 3 , Z =3. The structure features helical channels formed by corner‐sharing [CuS 4 ] and [SiS 4 ] tetrahedral units. Synthesis was carried out in a molten salt flux, as opposed to a traditional solid‐state route from elements, to minimize the formation of a competing ternary phase, Ba 2 SiS 4 . BaCu 2 SiS 4 is a semiconductor with an experimentally‐determined direct bandgap of ~2.2 eV. The material exhibits second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, confirming the noncentrosymmetric nature of the structure. Analysis of reported A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 crystal structures pointed out a correlation among potential structure types and the radii of the constituent elements. Total energy calculations were carried out to explore the relative stability of several reported crystal structures in this family of compounds.
