Solar heating and cooling technical data and systems analysis

The acquisition and processing of selected parametric data for inclusion in a computerized Data Base using the Marshall Information Retrieval and Data System (MIRADS) developed by NASA-MSFC is discussed. This data base provides extensive technical and socioeconomic information related to solar energy heating and cooling on a national scale. A broadly based research approach was used to assist in the support of program management and the application of a cost-effective program for solar energy development and demonstration.

An evaluation of the NASA scientific and technical information system

The best assessment of a scientific and technical information system is obtained from users. NASA has conducted system evaluation studies by talking with those the system is intended to serve - engineers and scientists working in their professional roles. The purpose was to assess the usefulness of the present system and to identify areas and ways in which the system can be made more effective. Emphasis was placed on NASA's announcement and current awareness media, its publication program, and its interactive retrieval system (RECON). The results show that the system is responsive to users' needs in most areas. Specific areas for improvement are identified and the steps NASA has taken are outlined. The major effect was a vastly improved communication with the users regarding what is available and how these resources can assist in solving information problems.

Initial technical environmental, and economic evaluation of space solar power concepts. Volume 2: Detailed report

The SPS concepts which appear to be technically feasible are discussed in terms of the economic viability and competitive costs with other energy sources. The concepts discussed include: power station, microwave reception and conversion, space construction and maintenance, space transportation, and program costs and analysis. The conclusions presented include: (1) The maximum output of an individual microwave transmission link to earth is about 5 GW. (2) The mass of 10 GW SPS is between 47,000,000 and 124,000,00 kg. (3) The silicon solar cell arrays make up well over half the weight and cost of the satellite. (4) The SPS in equatorial orbit will be eclipsed by the earth and by other satellites.

Lift cruise fan V/STOL aircraft conceptual design study T-39 modification. Volume 1: Technical report

The conversion of two T-39 aircraft into lift cruise fan research and technology vehicles is discussed. The concept is based upon modifying the T-39A (NA265-40) Sabreliner airframe into a V/STOL configuration by incorporating two LCF-459 lift cruise fans and three YJ-97 gas generators. The propulsion concept provides the thrust for horizontal flight or lift for vertical flight by deflection of bifurcated nozzles while maintaining engine out safety throughout the flight envelope. The configuration meets all the study requirements specified for the design with control powers in VTOL and conversion in excess of the requirement making it an excellent vehicle for research and development. The study report consists of two volumes; Volume 1 (Reference a) contains background data detailed description and technical substantiation of the aircraft. Volume 2 includes cost data, scheduling and program planning not addressed in Volume 1.

Technical assessment of high energy astronomy Observatory-B (HEAO-B) Attitude Control and and Determination Subsystem (ACDS)

The HEAO-B ACDS Review Team completed its four month assessment of the technical adequacy of the HEAO-B ACDS. As a result of its detailed analysis of the ACDS, the team found no reason why the ACDS will not perform its specified functions adequately. However, 23 concerns that point to potential difficulties were found and delineated; 18 of these are in the form of review item discrepancies.

Cost/benefit tradeoffs for reducing the energy consumption of the commercial air transportation system. Volume 1: Technical analysis

The effectiveness and associated costs of operational and technical options for reduced fuel consumption by Douglas aircraft in the domestic airline fleet are assessed. Areas explored include alternative procedures for airline and flight operations, advanced and state of the art technology, modification and derivative configurations, new near-term aircraft, turboprop configuration studies, and optimum aircraft geometry. Data for each aircraft studied is presented in tables and graphs.

Guidelines for the planning and preparation of illustrated technical talks

Guidelines are presented for the preparation of illustrated talks which are audience oriented and which are aimed at the efficient transfer of technical information. Early decisions concerning the required number of slides are helpful in initial planning for a good-quality talk. Detailed considerations are the establishment of limited objectives, selection of appropriate slide material, development of a text which is well coordinated with the slides, and accurate timing.

The technical challenge of air transportation - A Government view

This paper reviews the research and technology that must be conducted, and the facility investments that must be made, in order to assure that the United States is adequately prepared to meet the challenges that air transportation will provide in the future. The technical focal points for the next decade are reviewed in the context of the emerging pattern of air transportation needs for the remainder of the Century and the prospects for satisfying these needs are discussed. Particular attention is given to the responsibility that the Government must assume in aviation R&T and to the relationship that must be encouraged between the Government, the Industry and the University Community.

Problematics of different technical maintenance for computers

Two modes of operations are used in the technical maintenance of computers: servicing provided by the equipment supplier, and that done by specially trained computer users. The advantages and disadvantages of both modes are discussed. Maintenance downtime is tabulated for two computers serviced by user employees over an eight year period.

Technical and economic feasibility study of solar/fossil hybrid power systems

Results show that new hybrid systems utilizing fossil fuel augmentation of solar energy can provide significant capital and energy cost benefits when compared with solar thermal systems requiring thermal storage. These benefits accrue from a reduction of solar collection area that results from both the use of highly efficient gas and combined cycle energy conversion subsystems and elimination of the requirement for long-term energy storage subsystems. Technical feasibility and fuel savings benefits of solar hybrid retrofit to existing fossil-fired, gas and vapor cycle powerplants was confirmed; however, economic viability of steam cycle retrofit was found to be dependent on the thermodynamic and operational characteristics of the existing powerplant.
