Developing a low-cost renewable supply of hydrogen with high-temperature electrochemistry

Abstract Producing inexpensive hydrogen using electricity to split water or to extract hydrogen from hydrocarbon compounds is a two-sided coin: one side is obtaining and exploiting low-cost, emissions-free energy sources while the opposite side is establishing low-cost robust, durable, and efficient materials for the conversion processes. This article explores the materials needed for water splitting electrolysis, electrochemical abstraction of hydrogen from light alkanes, and looping thermal-chemical reaction processes that typically form and then dissociate an acid compound in a two- or three-step process. The focus is on the R&D needs of materials that are used for high-temperature electrochemistry, focusing on solid-oxide, ion-conducting cell materials sets (SOECs). To exploit the availability of low-cost electricity, these materials must stand up to cyclic operations. They also must be durable for years of service to reduce operating and maintenance costs, and they must achieve high conversion efficiencies to avoid large, energy-intensive recycle loops. Synchronization and phase locking of resonant magnet power supplies for Mu2e experiment at Fermilab

The Mu2e Experiment has stringent beam structure requirements; namely, it requires short (~200 ns) proton bunches separated by 1.5-2.0 $\mu$s. This beam structure will be produced using the Fermilab 8 GeV Booster, the 8 GeV Recycler Ring, and the Delivery Ring, which was formerly part of the antiproton accumulator system. Out of time beam is limited to a fraction of level of no more than $1\times 10^{-10}$, a requirement known as "extinction". Achieving this level of extinction requires a system of resonant magnets and collimators, phased such that only in time particles will pass through. The Mu2e magnet system involves two components: a 300 kHz component, timed such that the 600 kHz beam will pass through the collimators at the nodes, and a 4.5 MHz system to reduce the slewing of the in-time beam. These two systems must be precisely phase locked to the bunch rate coming from the Delivery Ring, which itself must be phased to match beam transfers coming from the Recycler. This poster describes the control system for the magnets, which is based on an Intel Arria FPGA, which handles phase locking of the magnets to the Delivery Ring, including the phase jumps required to match transfers from the Recycler.

Operation, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain of Lithium-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has a rich history of funding key innovations in batteries through multiple programs, including the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy programs sponsored by the Vehicle Technologies Office and Advanced Manufacturing Office. These DOE-sponsored innovations have been critical in lowering the cost of lithium-ion batteries to less than $160/kWh and increasing their energy density to more than 250 Wh/kg, enhancing the nation’s electrification system and achieving higher degrees of decarbonization. These investments continue to be crucial for positioning the United States as the hub for the most cumulative battery R&D programs worldwide. However, major breakthroughs in battery manufacturing are still needed to enable an electrified future evolving to predominantly incorporate rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This will require a strong battery manufacturing base that will not only enable cutting-edge advancements in materials and manufacturing sciences but will also allow the United States to become a world leader in this fast-growing area. This review aims at supporting DOE’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Loan Program to give technology background and information that can be used to develop the basis for loan topics and evaluate battery applications. Such a program can represent a significant stride toward reinforcing the US position in advanced manufacturing by introducing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensing and smart controls to facilitate, expedite, and lead the battery industry by 2030.

Decentralized and mobile biomass torrefaction to upgrade the biomass supply chain

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Takachar seeks to investigate the scaling laws and behaviors of a small-scale biomass torrefaction reactor design and its technoeconomic feasibility in various potential applications. Traditionally, biomass is logistically expensive and complicated to utilize in various energy and chemical industries, because it is often loose, wet, bulky, and present in small pockets in dispersed regions. Biomass torrefaction is an approach whereby raw biomass is subject to moderate heat, releasing low-energy molecules. The resultant torrefied biomass becomes energy and volume dense, which reduces the relative transportation cost, and in many cases can even support a local value chain that would otherwise not be possible. However, conventional biomass torrefaction systems are often large-scale, centralized in design, rending them difficult to deploy in many biomass applications in rural/decentralized regions. By building upon prior research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the concept of small-scale, low-cost, and portable biomass torrefaction units was explored further. This investigation has led to the advancement and scale-up of the MIT technology which can be deployed to a much wider spectrum of the biomass market than the conventional technologies.

Measuring Neptunium Concentration using Optical Spectrometry for the Pu-238 Supply Program

Targets containing 237 Np are irradiated at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to produce 238 Pu, as plutonium dioxide (PuO 2 ), a heat source material for use in future NASA space missions. Kilogram quantities of Np are processed yearly and developing methods to efficiently characterize and monitor the Np processing streams with optical spectroscopy and real-time monitoring software is a critical aspect of this effort. Here, we evaluate how ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) absorbance and Raman spectroscopic techniques are applicable to characterizing concentrated Np solutions and provide proof-of-principle and proof-of-concept results for each technique. Both techniques were tested in lab-scale studies and should improve the timeliness of production efforts. However, spectrophotometry is the more mature option and has been successfully demonstrated in a hot cell environment. An overview of the initial findings, a brief demonstration, and areas for future work will be highlighted in this report.
