Underwater Target Detection Software Demonstration on the RivGen Turbine

This repository contains data and processing scripts necessary to train the object detection models utilized in the underwater target detection software demonstration on the RivGen turbine project and to produce performance metrics (precision, recall, mAP50, mAP50-95). - Contents - Data consist of "images" and "labels". Each image has an associated label, both share the same time string in its file name (e.g., 2024_05_25_09_01_57.98.jpg and 2024_05_25_09_01_57.98.txt). Time strings have the format %yyyy_%mm_%dd_%HH_%MM_%SS.%3f. Images and labels were curated from 2021 and 2024 smolt outmigration periods at the project site in Igiugig, AK. Images are monochrome 8-bit images of objects (smolt, debris, and other) passing through the field of view of the deployed cameras during various operational stages of the RivGen turbine. Labels are text files indicating the class and bounding polygon of each object in an image. The provided labels use the "YOLO" label format. - Requirements - Python3.8+ is required to install and run the train and validation script. The README.md provides instruction for installing the requirements from the requirements.py file. - Instructions - The "example_train.py" file ingests the provided data, trains a model, and produces model performance metrics at completion. NOTE: model performance metrics will vary from run to run as a consequence of the random selection of training and validation data.

Re-Envisioning RCx: Achieving Max Potential HVAC Controls Retrofits through Modernized BAS Hardware and Software

Most existing buildings have sub-optimal heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls, resulting in wasted energy and occupant discomfort. Retro-commissioning (RCx) addresses many of these issues, but it is a lengthy and highly customized process. Limited capabilities of existing building automation system hardware restricts the scope of most RCx projects. Incentive programs consider building automation system (BAS) hardware retrofits to be high-capital investments and do not allow them in typical RCx programs. This paper describes work that the authors are leading to facilitate technical and market innovation in the BAS industry to unlock large savings in existing commercial buildings through deep retrofits of BAS hardware and software. California and New York research projects are demonstrating BAS retrofits leveraging the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE) new Guideline 36 high performance sequences of operation to achieve greater than 20 percent whole building energy savings, while saving costs and reducing risk through streamlined processes and standardization across BAS manufacturer product lines and across implementation practices. This paper describes market barriers that impede achieving deep savings from BAS retrofits in custom incentive and traditional RCx programs and presents a new maximum potential BAS retrofit model that addresses these barriers. The new model leverages the authors’ efforts in market enablement through open standards, BAS industry partnerships, and tools for cost-effective scaling that includes tools for project screening, savings calculations, and measurement and verification (M&V). This approach is widely applicable and will be ready for at-scale implementation within two years.

VAST: the Void Analysis Software Toolkit

Voids are expansive regions in the universe containing significantly fewer galaxies than surrounding galaxy clusters and filaments. They are a fundamental feature of the cosmic web and provide important information about galaxy physics and cosmology. For example, correlations between voids and luminous tracers of large-scale structure improve constraints on the expansion of the universe as compared to using tracers alone, and numerous studies have shown that the void environment influences the evolution of galaxies. However, what constitutes a void is vague and formulating a concrete definition to use in a void-finding algorithm is not trivial. As a result, several different algorithms exist to identify these cosmic underdensities. Our Void Analysis Software Toolkit, or VAST, provides Python 3 implementations of two such algorithms: VoidFinder and V 2 . This consolidation of two popular void-finding algorithms allows the user to, for example, easily compare the results of their analysis using different void definitions.

Biofidelic Digital Head Model Software

Researchers at Los Alamos have extensive capabilities in biofidelic modeling, simulation and software development for predicting traumatic brain injury (TBI). Since injury-causing experiments cannot be performed on live humans, and head dummies are incapable of predicting brain deformations/strain, our approach uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for the brain combined with advanced computational methods and substructure constitutive properties to identify harmful accelerations that may develop diffused axonal injury in the brain. The goal is to develop this capability to analyze the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, helmets and the advanced energy-absorbing materials used in PPE to mitigate brain injury. Los Alamos is seeking a collaborative partner (through a cooperative research and development agreement) to develop this capability toward a potential technology that will have commercial viability.

Hardening DOE R&D Software Tools for Web-based Visualization SBIR Phase I Final Report

Ubiquitous web-based visualization is essential to delivering large-scale data visualization to various stakeholders, from the scientist to the board member. These stakeholders will not tolerate a stalled application or a pop-up window asking them to wait for the processing to complete. They require a responsive and interactive visualization environment with high-quality imagery suitable for detailed analysis and boardroom presentations. At Kitware, Inc., we have accomplished web visualization to this point, leveraging state-of-the-art tools like HTML5, CSS3, SVG, Canvas, and WebGL. Solutions that leverage a combination of these technologies are necessary to handle workloads that vary significantly in data size efficiently. However, it is not always practical to move large data to the web client for visualization. Kitware's ParaView as a Service combines client-side visualization using both distributed processing and remote rendering on big data impractical to move. Existing distributed processing and remote rendering solution's interactivity is below the expectations of web-based applications. Our project examined proposed solutions to the areas outlined above in ParaView as a Service. We have investigated concurrent pipelines, streaming images, progressive rendering, and optimization of algorithms and data movement to address these concerns. For the Phase I project, we completed the proposed work plan. As a result, the project produced three prototypes of essential importance for web visualization and the ParaView as a Service community. We created a simple desktop application for an interactive streamline placement prototype, a web-based interactive streamline placement prototype, and a web-based progressive rendering utilizing raytracing prototype. These prototypes relied on the hardening of emerging software toolkits funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program (such as ParaView, VTK-m, and Mochi). We blended these components into web-based visualization prototypes that meet the industry's expectations for interactivity and responsiveness. The Phase I project had four essential focus areas: 1. Develop prototype ParaView as a Service backend server using asynchronous, non-blocking design principles. 2. Develop a prototype web application that uses the ParaView as a Service backend server for remote data visualization. 3. Implement image streaming with encoding/compression and progressive rendering capabilities in the proposed platform. 4. Evaluate the prototype developed and summarize observations, including the challenges and pitfalls of our approach. After our successful completion of Phase I, we are strongly positioned to propose a successful Phase II project.

Ducted Assembly Steady-State Heat Transfer Software (DASSH): Theory Manual

The Ducted Assembly Steady-State Heat transfer software (DASSH) is being developed at Argonne National Laboratory to obtain a steady-state thermal fluids result for the coolant flow and temperature distribution in a hexagonally gridded reactor core with ducted assemblies. In DASSH, each assembly is assumed to contain a hexagonal bundle of wire-wrapped pins. DASSH divides the coolant in the pin bundle into subchannels on which it applies energy balances to determine coolant and duct temperatures. DASSH offers multiple models for inter assembly heat transfer and features the ability to calculate pin temperatures. This document describes the models and equations implemented in DASSH. It includes a description of the geometric system to which the models are applied and a derivation of the subchannel energy balance formulation is presented. It also reviews the available correlations and provides an overview of the process by which power distributions are generated. Finally, it covers the code execution procedure, discussing the main code objects and their interactions.

VERAIO Software Management Plan

VERAIO is a set of utility codes used to provide a common set of input and outputs to the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA). VERA is a collection of several different computer codes that all have a common input and output. This prevents the need to manage input and output from each individual code, allowing for ease of use and reducing errors associated with code operability. The VERAIO utilities include VERAIn, VERAView, and VERARun. Each of these utilities is described below. VERAIn is an input processor that reads an ASCII input file generated by users, parses the file, performs some error checking, and writes an XML file to be read by other VERA codes. The main purpose of VERAIn is to provide a common input to all of the VERA codes so users only need to learn one input. VERAIn is written in Perl and uses YAML configuration files to provide flexibility. VERAView is a graphical user interface (GUI) that reads a VERA HDF output file and allows users to visualize results. VERAView is written in Python. VERARun is a script that drives the VERA execution in a high performance computing (HPC) environment. Work performed at the code level supports the Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP) (VERA-QA-001), and VERA Software Quality Assurance Plan (VERA-QA-002).
