Additional flow field studies of the GA(W)-1 airfoil with 30-percent chord Fowler flap including slot-gap variations and cove shape modifications

Experimental measurements were made to determine the effects of slot gap opening and flap cove shape on flap and airfoil flow fields. Test model was the GA(W)-1 airfoil with 0.30c Fowler flap deflected 35 degrees. Tests were conducted with optimum, wide and narrow gaps, and with three cove shapes. Three test angles were selected, corresponding to pre-stall and post-stall conditions. Reynolds number was 2,200,000 and Mach number was 0.13. Force, surface pressure, total pressure, and split-film turbulence measurements were made. Results were compared with theory for those parameters for which theoretical values were available.

Dipole and slot elements and arrays on semi-infinite substrates

The printed dipole or slot antenna on a semi-infinite substrate and infinite phased arrays of these elements are investigated. The solution is based on the moment method in the Fourier transform domain. The generalized impedance or admittance matrix can be expressed in rapidly converging infinite-integral or infinite-summation forms, allowing the accurate determination of the current distributions. Using the present formulation, the input impedance, resonant length, and radiation pattern for the isolated antennas, and the reflection coefficient for infinite phased arrays, are calculated.

Model Experiments with Slot Antenna Arrays for Imaging

A prototype imaging system at 31 GHz was developed, which employs a two-dimensional (5x5) array of tapered slot antennas, and integrated detector or mixer elements, in the focal plane of a prime-focus paraboloid reflector, with an f/D=1. The system can be scaled to shorter millimeter waves and submillimeter waves. The array spacing corresponds to a beam spacing of approximately one Rayleigh distance and a two-point resolution experiment showed that two point-sources at the Rayleigh distance are well resolved.

Deformation of a metal-matrix tensile coupon with a central slot - An experimental study

A metal-matrix specimen was investigated using high-sensitivity moire interferometry. In-plane displacement fields were analyzed at various load levels from 15 to 95 percent of the failure load. Normal and shear strains were determined from displacement gradients. Highly localized plastic slip zones occured in the ductile aluminum matrix tangent to the ends of the slot. Shear strains in the slip zone were an order of magnitude greater than the largest normal strains in the specimen. The shear-strain concentration factor rose dramatically with the onset of plastic slip and continued to rise gradually with load to 95 percent of the failure load. Upon unloading, shear strains in the slip zone remained precariously high.

A computer program for performance prediction of tripropellant rocket engines with tangential slot injection

For the development of a Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle (HLLV) several engines with different operating cycles and using LOX/Hydrocarbon propellants are presently being examined. Some concepts utilize hydrogen for thrust chamber wall cooling followed by a gas generator turbine drive cycle with subsequent dumping of H2/O2 combustion products into the nozzle downstream of the throat. In the Space Transportation Booster Engine (STBE) selection process the specific impulse will be one of the optimization criteria; however, the current performance prediction programs do not have the capability to include a third propellant in this process, nor to account for the effect of dumping the gas-generator product tangentially inside the nozzle. The purpose is to describe a computer program for accurately predicting the performance of such an engine. The code consists of two modules; one for the inviscid performance, and the other for the viscous loss. For the first module, the two-dimensional kinetics program (TDK) was modified to account for tripropellant chemistry, and for the effect of tangential slot injection. For the viscous loss, the Mass Addition Boundary Layer program (MABL) was modified to include the effects of the boundary layer-shear layer interaction, and tripropellant chemistry. Calculations were made for a real engine and compared with available data.

Turbulent separated flow in the vicinity of a single-slotted airfoil flap

Detailed measurements of pressure and velocity characteristics are presented and analyzed for flow over and downstream of a NACA 4412 airfoil equipped with a NACA 4415 single-slotted flap at high angle of attack and close to maximum lift. The flow remained attached over the main element while a large region of recirculating flow occurred over the aft 61 percent of the flap. The airfoil configuration was tested at a Mach number of 0.09 and chord based Reynolds number of 1.8 x 10 to the 6th in the NASA Ames Research Center 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel. Measurements of mean and fluctuating velocities were obtained in the region of recirculation and high turbulence intensity using three-dimensional laser velocimetry. In regions where the flow had a preferred direction and relatively low turbulence intensity hot-wire anemometry was used. Emphasis was placed on obtaining flow characteristics in the confluent boundary layer, the region of recirculating flow and in the downstream wake. Surface pressure measurements were made on the main airfoil, flap, wind tunnel roof, and wind tunnel floor. In addition to the presentation of pressure and velocity characteristics, the near wall results inside the separated region are analyzed as are the relative importance of terms in the momentum and turbulence kinetic energy equations in the confluent separated boundary layer and the recirculating region of the near wake.

CSCM Navier-Stokes thermal/aerodynamic analysis of hypersonic nozzle flows with slot injection and wall cooling

The Conservative Supra-Characteristic Method (CSCM) Navier-Stokes solver is applied to ascertain the problems inherent in the design of a nominal Mach 14 nozzle for NASA-Ames' 3.5-ft Hypersonic Wind Tunnel; attention is given to the effects of boundary layer cooling systems on the aerodynamic redesign of the nozzle throat region. Complete nozzle flowfields are calculated with and without slot injection of either hot or cold fluid into the boundary layer just upstream of the throat, as well as with alternatively adiabatic and cold walls. The CSCM method is capable of resolving subtle differences in the flows.

The tapered slot antenna - A new integrated element for millimeter-wave applications

Tapered slot antennas (TSAs) with a number of potential applications as single elements and focal-plane arrays are discussed. TSAs are fabricated with photolithographic techniques and integrated in either hybrid or MMIC circuits with receiver or transmitter components. They offer considerably narrower beams than other integrated antenna elements and have high aperture efficiency and packing density as array elements. Both the circuit and radiation properties of TSAs are reviewed. Topics covered include: antenna beamwidth, directivity, and gain of single-element TSAs; their beam shape and the effect of different taper shapes; and the input impedance and the effects of using thick dielectrics. These characteristics are also given for TSA arrays, as are the circuit properties of the array elements. Different array structures and their applications are also described.

Results of LFC experiment on slotted swept supercritical airfoil in Langley's 8-foot transonic pressure tunnel

A large chord swept supercritical laminar-flow control (LFC) airfoil was designed, constructed, and tested in the Langley 8-foot Transonic Pressure Tunnel (TPT). The LFC airfoil experiment was established to provide basic information concerning the design and compatibility of high performance supercritical airfoils with suction boundary-layer control achieved through fine slots or porous surface concepts. Shockless pressure distribution was achieved. Full chord laminar flow was achieved on upper and lower surfaces. Full chord laminar flow was maintained at subcritical speeds and over large supercritical zones. Feasibility of combined suction laminarization and supercritical airfoil technology was demonstrated.

Nonlinear transonic Wall-Interference Assessment/Correction (WIAC) procedures and application to cast-10 airfoil results from the NASA 0.3-m TCT 8- by 24-inch Slotted Wall Test Section (SWTS)

From the time that wind tunnel wall interference was recognized to be significant, researchers have been developing methods to alleviate or account for it. Despite the best effort so far, it appears that no method is available which completely eliminates the effects due to the wind tunnel walls. This report discusses procedures developed for slotted wall and adaptive wall test sections of the Langley 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) to assess and correct for the residual interference by methods consistent with the transonic nature of the tests.
