Crystallization and assembly at interfaces: Celebrating the achievements of a vibrant research community

Crystallization is one of the cornerstones of modern materials science and engineering and plays a critical role in industries ranging from petroleum derivative manufacturing to microstructural engineering of structural materials and the defect-free growth of silicon single crystals for integrated chip technology. Also, in the realm of environmental and biological processes, the mineralization of diverse compounds has shaped the vast array of ecosystems we observe today. Conversely, understanding the crystallization and assembly of building blocks of various sizes at interfaces has broader impacts on materials synthesis, performance of energy storage devices, optimized processing conditions, and more.

Understanding Reentrance in Frustrated Magnets: The Case of the Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 Pyrochlore

Reentrance, the return of a system from an ordered phase to a previously encountered less-ordered one as a controlled parameter is continuously varied, is a recurring theme found in disparate physical systems, yet its microscopic cause is often not investigated thoroughly. Here, through detailed characterization and theoretical modeling, we uncover the microscopic mechanism behind reentrance in the strongly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 . We use single crystal heat capacity measurements to expose that Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 exhibits multiple instances of reentrance in its magnetic field B vs temperature T phase diagram for magnetic fields along three cubic high symmetry directions. Through classical Monte Carlo simulations, mean field theory, and classical linear spin-wave expansions, we argue that the origins of the multiple occurrences of reentrance observed in Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 are linked to soft modes. These soft modes arise from phase competition and enhance thermal fluctuations that entropically stabilize a specific ordered phase, resulting in an increased transition temperature for certain field values and thus the reentrant behavior. Our work represents a detailed examination into the mechanisms responsible for reentrance in a frustrated magnet and may serve as a template for the interpretation of reentrant phenomena in other physical systems.

Charge carrier mobility of halide perovskite single crystals for ionizing radiation detection

Halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising semiconductor materials for several applications including solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and radiation detectors. The charge carrier transport properties, which could be evaluated by the mobility-lifetime (mu-tau or μ-г) product, serve an important role for the development of halide perovskites for radiation detection applications. In this perspective, we firstly explain the charge transport mechanism and the limiting factors that determine the intrinsic charge carrier mobility in halide perovskite single crystals. Then, we overview the techniques and methods that have been employed for evaluating the charge carrier mobility (for both electrons and holes). Lastly, we discuss the discrepancy between the experimentally determined carrier mobility from the literature for halide perovskite single crystals and a perspective on future developments for carrier mobility enhancement is provided.

Solidification rate influence on orientation and mechanical properties of MAR-M-246+Hf

The influence of solidification rates on the orientation and mechanical properties of MAR-M-246+Hf was studied. The preferred orientation was found to be (001) for single crystals, with all samples with 45 degrees of (001). Tensile tests were performed at room temperature. The anisotropy of directionally solidified MAR-M-246+Hf was demonstrated by gage section deformation. Dendrite arm spacing and crystal growth were found to depend on solidification rates and source material conditions. The greatest strength occurred at lower solidification rates. Some single crystals were grown by control of growth rates without seeding.

Revised phase diagram of the high- T c cuprate superconductor Pb-doped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ revealed by anisotropic transport measurements

Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-T c ) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-T c cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the “weak” pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the “strong” pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical doping level. Her the results indicate the importance of Mottness in high-T c superconductivity.

Remote epitaxy and selective epitaxy on vdW materials for layer transfer

Remote epitaxy is recently gaining huge attention forthe growth of single-crystal thin films and their isolation from the substrate for heterogeneous integration.Despite the recent progress, there are challenges inengineering the interface and optimizing the materialquality. Here, we introduce two approaches that could overcome the issues. As the first approach, we show directly grown 2D materials as a template for remote epitaxy of III-V and III-N materials. This ensuresa pristine interface without transfer process-related contaminations and damages. Second, we show theuse of nanopatterned graphene for selective epitaxyand lateral overgrowth of single-crystal films. This allows for the use of materials as substrates and epilayers which is not possible in remote epitaxy.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 single crystals

MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 are two members with n = 2 and 3 in the family of MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 where the n = 1 member, MnBi 2 Te 4 , has been intensively investigated as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. In this work, we report the A-type antiferromagnetic order in these two compounds by measuring magnetic properties, electrical and thermal transport, specific heat, and single-crystal neutron diffraction. Both compounds order into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure as does MnBi 2 Te 4 with ferromagnetic planes coupled antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic c axis. While no evidence for any in-plane ordered moment is found for MnBi 2 Te 4 or MnBi 6 Te 10 , weak reflections at half- L positions along the [0 0 L ] direction are observed for MnBi 4 Te 7 suggesting an in-plane ordered moment around 0.15 μ B / Mn . The ordering temperature, T N , is 13 K for MnBi 4 Te 7 and 11 K for MnBi 6 Te 10 . The magnetic order is also manifested in the anisotropic magnetic properties. Furthermore, for both compounds, the interlayer coupling is weak and a spin-flip transition occurs when a magnetic field of around 1.6 kOe is applied along the c axis at 2 K. As observed in MnBi 2 Te 4 , when cooling across T N , no anomaly was observed in the temperature dependence of thermopower. On the other hand, critical scattering effects are observed in thermal conductivity although the effect is less pronounced than that in MnBi 2 Te 4 .

Intralattice-bonded phase-engineered ultrahigh-Ni single-crystalline cathodes suppress strain evolution

Single crystallization remains a debated strategy for advancing Ni-rich cathode materials. While it mitigates particle cracking and improves tap density by eliminating particle boundaries, extended diffusion pathways introduce volumetric and lattice distortions, compromising electrochemical and structural stability. These challenges hinder the commercialization of high-Ni single-crystal cathodes, calling for a reassessment of their viability. Here, in this study, we report a structural design: intralattice-bonded phase single-crystal LiNi 0.92 Co 0.03 Mn 0.05 O 2 (IBP-SC92). This architecture maintains structural integrity while shortening diffusion pathways, resulting in almost zero electrochemical degradation during cycling. The robust structure and fast ion transport mitigate lattice strain, as confirmed by multiscale high-resolution diffraction and imaging techniques, preventing intragranular cracks and irreversible phase transitions. As a result, IBP-SC92 shows outstanding cycling stability, with nearly 100% capacity retention after 100 cycles in half cells and 94.5% retention after 1,000 cycles in full cells. This redefined single-crystal cathode represents a significant step towards the industrial adoption of high-energy-density materials.

Investigation of Three-Dimensional Stress Fields and Slip Systems for FCC Single Crystal Superalloy Notched Specimens

Metals and their alloys, except for a few intermetallics, are inherently ductile, i.e. plastic deformation precedes fracture in these materials. Therefore, resistance to fracture is directly related to the development of the plastic zone at the crack tip. Recent studies indicate that the fracture toughness of single crystals depends on the crystallographic orientation of the notch as well as the loading direction. In general, the dependence of crack propagation resistance on crystallographic orientation arises from the anisotropy of (i) elastic constants, (ii) plastic deformation (or slip), and (iii) the weakest fracture planes (e.g. cleavage planes). Because of the triaxial stress state at the notch tips, many slip systems that otherwise would not be activated during uniaxial testing, become operational. The plastic zone formation in single crystals has been tackled theoretically by Rice and his co-workers and only limited experimental work has been conducted in this area. The study of the stresses and strains in the vicinity of a FCC single crystal notch tip is of relatively recent origin. We present experimental and numerical investigation of 3D stress fields and evolution of slip sector boundaries near notches in FCC single crystal tension test specimens, and demonstrate that a 3D linear elastic finite element model that includes the effect of material anisotropy is shown to predict active slip planes and sectors accurately. The slip sector boundaries are shown to have complex curved shapes with several slip systems active simultaneously near the notch. Results are presented for surface and mid-plane of the specimens. The results demonstrate that accounting for 3D elastic anisotropy is very important for accurate prediction of slip activation near FCC single crystal notches loaded in tension. Results from the study will help establish guidelines for fatigue damage near single crystal notches.

Thickness-dependent spin bistable transitions in single-crystalline molecular 2D material

Abstract The advent of two-dimensional (2D) crystals has led to numerous scientific breakthroughs. Conventional 2D systems have in-plane covalent bonds and a weak out-of-plane van-der-Waals bond. Here we report a new type of 2D material composed of discrete magnetic molecules, where anisotropic van-der-Waals interactions bond the molecules into a 2D packing. Through mechanical exfoliation, we can obtain single-crystalline molecular monolayers, which can be readily integrated into other 2D systems. Optical spectroscopy suggests the few-layered molecules preserve the temperature-induced spin-crossover switching observed in the bulk form but show a drastic increase in thermal hysteresis unique to these thin 2D molecule assemblies. The trapping of spin bistability with decreasing layer number can arise from domain wall dynamics in reduced dimensions. Our results establish molecular solids with strong anisotropy of intermolecular interactions as precursors to a new class of 2D materials, affording possibilities to control molecular functionalities through substrate and interlayer interactions.

Multi–Stage Optimization of Pore Size and Shape in Pore–Space–Partitioned Metal–Organic Frameworks for Highly Selective and Sensitive Benzene Capture

Compared to exploratory development of new structure types, pushing the limits of isoreticular synthesis on a high-performance MOF platform may have higher probability of achieving targeted properties. Multi-modular MOF platforms could offer even more opportunities by expanding the scope of isoreticular chemistry. However, navigating isoreticular chemistry towards best properties on a multi-modular platform is challenging due to multiple interconnected pathways. Here on the multi-modular pacs (partitioned acs) platform, we demonstrate accessibility to a new regime of pore geometry using two independently adjustable modules (framework-forming module 1 and pore-partitioning module 2). A series of new pacs materials have been made. Benzene/cyclohexane selectivity is tuned, progressively, from 4.5 to 15.6 to 195.4 and to 482.5 by pushing the boundary of the pacs platform towards the smallest modules known so far. The exceptional stability of these materials in retaining both porosity and single crystallinity enables single-crystal diffraction studies of different crystal forms (as-synthesized, activated, guest-loaded) that help reveal the mechanistic aspects of adsorption in pacs materials.

Constitutive modeling of inelastic anisotropic material response

A constitutive equation was developed to predict the inelastic thermomechanical response of single crystal turbine blades. These equations are essential for developing accurate finite element models of hot section components and contribute significantly to the understanding and prediction of crack initiation and propagation. The method used was limited to unified state variable constitutive equations. Two approaches to developing an anisotropic constitutive equation were reviewed. One approach was to apply the Stouffer-Bodner representation for deformation induced anisotropy to materials with an initial anisotropy such as single crystals. The second approach was to determine the global inelastic strain rate from the contribution of the slip in each of the possible crystallographic slip systems. A three dimensional finite element is being developed with a variable constitutive equation link that can be used for constitutive equation development and to predict the response of an experiment using the actual specimen geometry and loading conditions.

Advanced inorganic halide ceramic scintillators

Research in ceramic scintillators has steadily progressed alongside the research in bulk single crystal scintillator growth. As interest in faster scintillation material production with lower cost increases, more research on scintillating ceramics is needed. Research targeting optimization of optically transparent ceramics that can rival bulk-grown crystals grown may lower cost, increase yield, increase volume, and improve energy resolution in applications and systems currently using sodium iodide and alike. Ceramic scintillators that are dense (>5 g/cm 3 ), have high effective Z (>60), are bright (>40,000 photons/MeV), and are not sensitive to moisture as well as those that can be handled without protection are desired. Ultra-fast ceramic materials are also of interest. This paper presents an equipment design and technique to produce inorganic halide ceramic scintillators Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) and Tl 2 HfCl 6 (THC). Improvements and optimization of CHC and THC ceramic scintillator fabrication are gauged by monitoring the energy resolution and peak position of 137 Cs full energy peak at 662 keV. With a 1-inch diameter CHC ceramic scintillator, energy resolution of 5.4% (FWHM) and light yield of 20,700 ph/MeV are achieved, while with a 16-mm diameter THC ceramic scintillator, energy resolution of 5.1% (FWHM) and light yield of 27,800 ph/MeV are achieved. Decay times of 0.6 μs (21%) and 3.0 μs (79%) are measured for CHC and 0.3 μs (13%) and 1.0 μs (87%) for THC. Here, both ceramic CHC and THC scintillators have similarly good proportionality data when compared to their single crystal counterparts.

High Temperature Piezoelectric Drill

The current NASA Decadal mission planning effort has identified Venus as a significant scientific target for a surface in-situ sampling/analyzing mission. The Venus environment represents several extremes including high temperature (460 deg C), high pressure (~9 MPa), and potentially corrosive (condensed sulfuric acid droplets that adhere to surfaces during entry) environments. This technology challenge requires new rock sampling tools for these extreme conditions. Piezoelectric materials can potentially operate over a wide temperature range. Single crystals, like LiNbO3, have a Curie temperature that is higher than 1000 deg C and the piezoelectric ceramics Bismuth Titanate higher than 600 deg C. A study of the feasibility of producing piezoelectric drills that can operate in the temperature range up to 500 deg C was conducted. The study includes the high temperature properties investigations of engineering materials and piezoelectric ceramics with different formulas and doping. The drilling performances of a prototype Ultrasonic/Sonic Drill/Corer (USDC) using high temperate piezoelectric ceramics and single crystal were tested at temperature up to 500 deg C. The detailed results of our study and a discussion of the future work on performance improvements are presented in this paper.

Floating zone crystal growth, structure, and properties of a cubic Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 garnet-type lithium-ion conductor

As a promising candidate for solid-state electrolytes in Li-ion batteries, the garnet-type Li-ion conductor series Li 5+x La 3 Nb 2-x Zr x O 12 (LLNZO) (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) exhibits high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, no previous single-crystal growth or characterization has been reported for LLNZO compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. To obtain a complete understanding of the trend in the structure–property relationship in this class of materials, we used the floating zone (FZ) method to grow a single crystal of Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 that was 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Using Laue neutron single-crystal diffraction, two distinct Li sites were observed: tetrahedral 24d and octahedral 96h sites. The maximum entropy method (MEM) based on neutron single-crystal diffraction data was used to map Li nuclear density and estimate that the bottleneck of Li transport exists between neighboring tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and that Li is delocalized between split octahedral sites. Room-temperature Li-ion conductivity in Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was 1.37 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . The Li migration activation energy was estimated to be 0.50 eV from EIS and 0.47 eV from dielectric relaxation measurements. The Li-ion jump attempt rate was estimated to be 1.47 × 10 12 Hz while the time scale of successful migration is 10 -7 to 10 -6 s.

Synthesis and structure of carbon-doped H 3 S compounds at high pressure

Understanding of recently reported putative close-to-room-temperature superconductivity in C-S-H compounds at 267 GPa demands a reproducible synthesis protocol as well as knowledge of the compounds' structure and composition. Here, we synthesized C-S-H compounds with various carbon compositions at high pressures from elemental carbon C and methane CH 4 , sulfur S, and molecular hydrogen H 2 . Here, we focus on compounds synthesized using methane as these allow a straightforward determination of their structure and composition by combining single-crystal x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. We applied a two-stage synthesis of [(CH 4 ) x (H 2 S) (1-x) ] 2 H 2 compounds with various compositions by first reacting sulfur and mixed methane-hydrogen fluids and forming CH 4 -doped H 2 S crystals at 0.5-3 GPa and then by growing single crystals of the desired hydrogen-rich compound. Raman spectroscopy applied to this material shows the presence of CH 4 molecules incorporated into the lattice and allows the determination of the CH 4 content, while single-crystal x-ray diffraction results suggest that the methane molecules substitute H 2 S molecules. The structural behavior of these compounds is very similar to the previously investigated methane-free crystals demonstrating a transition from Al 2 Cu type I4/mcm molecular crystal to a modulated molecular structure at 20-30 GPa and back to the same basic I4/mcm structure in an extended modification with greatly modified Raman spectra. This latter phase demonstrates a distortion into a Pnma structure at 132-159 GPa and then transforms into a common Im$\bar{3}$m H 3 S phase at higher pressures; however, no structural anomaly is detected near 220 GPa, where a sharp upturn in T c has been reported.

Low dimensional magnetic solids and single crystal elpasolites: Need for improved crystal growing techniques

The need for extensive crystal growing experiments to develop techniques for preparing crystals suitable for magnetic anisotropy measurements and detailed X-ray and neutron diffraction studies is rationalized on the basis of the unique magnetic properties of the materials and their hydrogen bonded structures which have many features in common with metalloenzyme and metalloprotein active sites. Single crystals of the single and mixed lanthanide species are prepared by the Bridgeman technique of gradient solidification of molten samples. The effects of crystal imperfections on the optical properties of these materials are an important part of the projected research. A series of a-amido acid complexes of first row transition metals were prepared which crystallize as infinite linear chains and exhibit low dimensional magnetic ordering (one or two) at temperature below 40 K.
