Measurement of strains at high temperatures by means of a portable holographic moire camera

Electronic holographic moire is utilized to measure strains at temperatures up to 1000 C. A CW laser operating at 50 mW and at the wavelength of 632.8 nm is used to illuminate the objects under study. The main variables influencing the fringe patterns visibility are discussed and measurements are performed to obtain the values of these variables in the performed experiments. The coefficient of expansion of an alloy is measured at temperatures ranging from 797 C to 986 C. Excellent agreement is found between the measured values and those provided by the manufacturer.

High-temperature metal purification using a compact, portable rf heating and levitation system on the wake shield

The potential use of a compact, battery-operated rf levitator and heating system to purify high-temperature melting materials in space is described. The wake shield now being fabricated for the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center will provide an Ultra-high vacuum (10(exp -14) Torr hydrogen, 10(exp -14) Torr helium, 10(exp -30) Torr oxygen). The use of the wake shield to purify Nb, Ti, W, Ir, and other metals to a purity level not achievable on earth is described.

High temperature metal purification using a compact portable rf heating and levitation system on the wake shield

The Wake Shield Facility (WSF) can provide an ideal vacuum environment for the purification of high temperature metals in space. The Modular Electromagnetic Levitator (MEL), will provide the opportunity to study undercooling of metals in space and allow to determine material properties in space. The battery powered rf levitation and heating system developed for the MEL demonstrated efficiency of 36 percent. This system is being considered to purify metals at temperatures below 3000 C.

Portable Common Execution Environment (PCEE) project review: Peer review

The purpose of the review was to conduct an independent, in-depth analysis of the PCEE project and to provide the results of said review. The review team was tasked with evaluating the potential contribution of the PCEE project to the improvement of the life cycle support of mission and safety critical (MASC) computing components for large, complex, non-stop, distributed systems similar to those planned for such NASA programs as the space station, lunar outpost, and manned missions to Mars. Some conclusions of the review team are as follow: The PCEE project was given high marks for its breath of vision on the overall problem with MASC software; Correlated with the sweeping vision, the Review Team is very skeptical that any research project can successfully attack such a broad range of problems; and several recommendations are made such as to identify the components of the broad solution envisioned, prioritizing them with respect to their impact and the likely ability of the PCEE or others to attack them successfully, and to rewrite its Concept Document differentiating the problem description, objectives, approach, and results so that the project vision becomes assessible to others.

A portable Ka-band front-end test package for beam-waveguide antenna performance evaluation. Part 2: Tests on the antenna

In part one of this article, a description was given of a Ka-band test package developed to enable testing of the Deep Space Station (DDS) 13 34-m beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna at 32 GHz. Test results were given for the Ka-band test package in an on-the-ground test configuration. This article is a companion article concerned with Ka-band test results for the test package in an on-the-antenna test configuration. Included are Ka-band zenith noise-temperature values, tipping-curve data, and subreflector test results obtained at the Cassegrain focal point, as well as at the final BWG focal point (located in a subterranean pedestal room). Test results show that, through the use of the Ka-band test package, the BWG antenna performance was successfully evaluated at Ka-band. The Ka-band test package operated well in all of the different antenna test configurations.

A portable Ku-band front-end test package for beam-waveguide antenna performance evaluation

A 34-m beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna has been built a Deep Space Station 13 (DDS 13) in the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex. This antenna is designed to be efficient at X-, Ku-, and Ka-bands, and it is the first NASA tracking antenna to use a BWG design. The design of a Ku-band test package for the new BWG antenna at 11.7-12.2 GHz is presented. Results of linear polarization measurements with the test package on the ground are also presented. This report is the fifth in a series of articles concerned with test package design and performance.

Portable fiber optic coupled Doppler interferometer system for detonation and shock wave diagnostics

Testing and analysis of shock wave characteristics such as detonators and ground shock propagation frequently require a method of measuring velocity and displacement of the surface of interest. One method of measurement is Doppler interferometry. The VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector) uses Doppler interferometry and has gained wide acceptance as the preferred tool for shock measurement. An important asset of VISAR is that it measures velocity and displacement nonintrusively.

A microprocessor based portable bolt tension monitor

A bolt tension monitor (BTM) which uses ultrasonics and a pulsed phase locked loop circuit to measure load-induced acoustic phase shifts which are independent of friction is described. The BTM makes it possible to measure the load in a bolt that was tightened at some time in the past. This capability to recertify a load after-the-fact will help to insure the integrity of a bolted joint.

Space Portable Spectroreflectometer (SPSR) Investigation on Mir Space Station

Degradation of thermal control surface properties results from the synergistic effects of the space environment's interaction with materials. This includes the natural space environment and the contamination environment produced by the spacecraft itself. Past flight experiments have utilized small witness samples which were recovered for post flight analysis on the ground. However, reintroduction into an oxygen atmosphere can, in itself, cause a change in the properties of the material being studied. Space based measurements using video cameras were not quantifiable. Very limited experiments have previously measured material properties in-situ on a spacecraft but only using small prepared witness samples with minimal exposure to space. The only way to really determine the properties of actual spacecraft surfaces after an extended exposure to the space environment is to measure them directly, in space. The SPSR provides this capability to measure the most important thermal property which can change in the space environment, the solar absorptivity. The Mir space station provides an excellent opportunity for such experiments due to the long exposure that some of the modules have experienced. Measurements from different modules would have provided an opportunity to determine the effect of various exposure time in orbit and under different contamination environments. Due to other pressing issues only one site was measured using the SPSR.

Remote Sensing of Aircraft Contrails Using a Field Portable Digital Array Scanned Interferometer

With a Digital Array Scanned Interferometer (DASI), we have obtained proof-of-concept observations with which we demonstrate DASI capabilities for the determination of contrail properties. These include the measurement of the cloud and soot microphysical parameters, as well, the abundances of specific pollutant species such as SO(sub x) or NO(sub x). From high quality hyperspectral data and using radiative transfer methods and atmospheric chemistry analysis in the data reduction and interpretation, powerful inferences concerning cloud formation, evolution and dissipation can be made. Under this sub-topic, we will integrate DASI with computer controlled scanning of the field-of-view to direct the sensor towards contrails and exhaust plumes for tracking the emitting vehicles. The optimum DASI wavelength sensitivity range for sensing contrails is 0.35 - 2.5 micron. DASI deploys on the ground or from aircraft to observe contrails in the vicinity. This enables rapid, accurate measurement of the temporal, spatial, and chemical evolution of contrails (or other plumes or exhaust sources) with a low cost, efficient sensor.

Scalability and Portability of Two Parallel Implementations of ADI

Two domain decompositions for the implementation of the NAS Scalar Penta-diagonal Parallel Benchmark on MIMD systems are investigated, namely transposition and multi-partitioning. Hardware platforms considered are the Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon XP/S-15, and clusters of SGI workstations on ethernet, communicating through PVM. It is found that the multi-partitioning strategy offers the kind of coarse granularity that allows scaling up to hundreds of processors on a massively parallel machine. Moreover, efficiency is retained when the code is ported verbatim (save message passing syntax) to a PVM environment on a modest size cluster of workstations.
