Prediction of compressor stall for distorted and undistorted flow by use of a multistage compressor simulation on the digital computer

A simulation technique is presented for the prediction of compressor stall for axial-flow compressors for clean and distorted inlet flow. The simulation is implemented on the digital computer and uses stage stacking and lumped-volume gas dynamics. The resulting nonlinear differential equations are linearized about a steady-state operating point, and a Routh-Hurwitz stability test is performed on the linear system matrix. Parallel compressor theory is utilized to extend the technique to the distorted inlet flow problem. The method is applied to the eight-stage J85-13 compressor. Analytical stall prediction for the undistorted stall line shows good agreement with experimental results. The predicted stall line for distorted inlet flow is in agreement with experimental results only for large distortion extents and/or low distortion levels. Results for low distortion extents and high distortion level do not agree with experimental results.

Development and application of operational techniques for the inventory and monitoring of resources and uses for the Texas coastal zone. Volume 1: Text

The author has identified the following significant results. Image interpretation and computer-assisted techniques were developed to analyze LANDSAT scenes in support of resource inventory and monitoring requirements for the Texas coastal region. Land cover and land use maps, at a scale of 1:125,000 for the image interpretation product and 1:24,000 for the computer-assisted product, were generated covering four Texas coastal test sites. Classification schemes which parallel national systems were developed for each procedure, including 23 classes for image interpretation technique and 13 classes for the computer-assisted technique. Results indicate that LANDSAT-derived land cover and land use maps can be successfully applied to a variety of planning and management activities on the Texas coast. Computer-derived land/water maps can be used with tide gage data to assess shoreline boundaries for management purposes.

A Special Purpose Architecture for Finite Element Analysis

The analysis of aerospace structures by the finite element method consumes considerable computer time. The cost of this resource and the designer's desire to have rapid feedback concerning such questions as the effect of a change in loading of the structure or in a parameter of some structural material led to the design of a special purpose parallel computing system for finite element analysis. As a special purpose computer, the architecture of this finite element computer is closely tied to computational aspects of the particular problem. Various aspects of an MIMD array of microprocessors are related to the requirements of the class of finite element analysis problems which it is intended to solve.

Atmospheric Emission Photometric Imaging on Spacelab (AEPI)

Two parallel detector systems are used for atmospheric emission photometric emission. The top system is a TV system using the image intensified S.E.C. tube as the detector. The bottom system, the photon counting array (P.C.A.), uses a microchannel plate intensified anode array tube and is equivalent to a 100 channel photomultiplier. For the television, the filters are selected by means of a filter wheel set. The field of view of the is interchangeable between 20 and 6 degrees, by means of a moveable prism. The quartz window mu channel plate intensifier is fiber optically coupled to a 40-25 demagnifying tube which is in turn coupled to the S.E.C. tube. The PCA channel has a fixed field of view of 4 deg and a remote control interchangeable photometric converter optics which converts the imaging array into a multichannel photometer. The mu channel plate array tube amplifies the photons into detectable counts for the PCA electronics. The entire system is pointed by a two axis gimbal. The flight equipment to be acquired consists of a gyro package and an interactive flight control unit panel. The gyro package is necessary because of the inadequate attitude reference supplied by the current Spacelab systems.

Advancements in real-time engine simulation technology

The approaches used to develop real-time engine simulations are reviewed. Both digital and hybrid (analog and digital) techniques are discussed and specific examples of each are cited. These approaches are assessed from the standpoint of their usefulness for digital engine control development. A number of NASA-sponsored simulation research activities, aimed at exploring real-time simulation techniques, are described. These include the development of a microcomputer-based, parallel processor system for real-time engine simulation.

Airborne dual laser excitation and mapping of phytoplankton photopigments in a Gulf Stream Warm Core Ring

Utilization of a two-color airborne lidar system in the systematic study of a major oceanographic feature is reported here for the first time. An excimer pumped dye laser was optically and electronically integrated into the NASA Airborne Oceanographic Lidar for simultaneous use with a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser. The output beams exit the laser system along parallel paths after being produced on an alternating pulse basis at a combined rate of 12.5 pps. Results are presented for missions flown over a Gulf Stream Warm Core Ring (WCR) as well as over shelf, slope, Gulf Stream, and Sargasso Sea waters. From the airborne data a high coherence is shown between the two-color chlorophyll a data and between the Nd:YAG chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin responses within each of these water masses. However, distinct differences in the response patterns of these photopigments are shown to exist between the differing water masses. At certain of the boundaries separating the water masses a sharp transition is seen to occur, while at others a wider transition zone was observed in which the correlation between the photopigments appears to degrade.

Isidis basin - Site of ancient volatile-rich debris layer

The differentiation of the Martian Isidis impact basin's interior plains into hillocky terrains with isolated mounds arranged in arctuate chains, and ridged terrains with systems of parallel curvilinear ridges, is presently suggested to reflect the deposition and subsequent removal of a thick layer of material within the basin. The process of terrestrial ice-cover dissintegration, which yields such landforms as moraines, kames, and eskers, furnishes a possible analog to the Isidis features; Viking orbiter images show Martian ridges with similar characteristics, suggesting that the Isidis layer may have been only part of a more general deposition period that coincided with one of major outflow channel formation involving the release of subsurface volatiles.

Transient finite element computations on the transputer system

The aim was to study the solution of transient finite element problems on the Transputer system of parallel processors. The central difference time integration rule was used so that no equation solving was necessary. Also investigated was subcycling time integration which uses different time steps in different subdomains of the finite element mesh. A one-dimensional bar problem was analyzed using the parallel time integration algorithm. This involves subdividing the bar into subproblems which are assigned to different processors. Results show that the significant speed-up can be obtained through parallel processing. Also subcycling can give an additional speed-up in certain classes of problems. A two-dimensional problem was also examined to evaluate the effect of the communication to computation ratio on solution time.

Report from ionospheric science

The general strategy to advance knowledge of the ionospheric component of the solar terrestrial system should consist of a three pronged attack on the problem. Ionospheric models should be refined by utilization of existing and new data bases. The data generated in the future should emphasize spatial and temporal gradients and their relation to other events in the solar terrestrial system. In parallel with the improvement in modeling, it will be necessary to initiate a program of advanced instrument development. In particular, emphasis should be placed on the area of improved imaging techniques. The third general activity to be supported should be active experiments related to a better understanding of the basic physics of interactions occurring in the ionospheric environment. These strategies are briefly discussed.

Load balancing and task decomposition techniques for parallel implementation of integrated vision systems algorithms

Several techniques are presented to perform static and dynamic load balancing schemes for integrated vision systems. These techniques are novel in the sense that they capture the computational requirements of a task by examining the data when they are produced. Furthermore, they can be applied to many integrated vision systems because many algorithms in different systems are either the same or have similar computational characteristics. These techniques are evaluated by applying them to the algorithms in a motion estimation system. It is shown that the performance gains when these techniques are used are significant and the overhead of using these techniques is minimal. The performance is evaluated by implementing the algorithms using the presented techniques on a hypercube multiprocessor system.

Bit-parallel arithmetic in a massively-parallel associative processor

A simple but powerful new architecture based on a classical associative processor model is presented. Algorithms for performing the four basic arithmetic operations both for integer and floating point operands are described. For m-bit operands, the proposed architecture makes it possible to execute complex operations in O(m) cycles as opposed to O(m exp 2) for bit-serial machines. A word-parallel, bit-parallel, massively-parallel computing system can be constructed using this architecture with VLSI technology. The operation of this system is demonstrated for the fast Fourier transform and matrix multiplication.
