Inflight maintenance - Design for the future.

Extensive studies in the field of in-flight maintenance are reviewed. The progress made in this technology, and the design considerations essential for meeting the constraints imposed by a manned space mission lasting several years are outlined. Concepts for the design and packaging of maintainable systems are described. The requirement of full redundancy, with capability to perform in-flight maintenance, to provide reliability in long-duration missions is demonstrated from a reliability analysis.

Space science experiments aboard ATS-F.

The Environmental Measurements Experiment (EME) package is mounted on the ATS-F spacecraft to a structure that is located on top of the 30-foot parabolic reflector hub. The eight experiments of the EME package are designed to study the environment in space at synchronous altitude and to obtain information on electromagnetic-ionospheric interactions. Six of these experiments will obtain data on charged particles of several different types. A seventh experiment is to provide magnetic field data. The eighth experiment is concerned with solar cell degradation studies.

A simplified package for calculating with splines

This package is designed to solve some of the elementary problems of spline interpretation and least squares fit. The subroutines fall into three basic categories. The first category involves computations with a given spline and/or knot sequence; the second category involves routines which calculate the coefficients of splines which perform a certain task (such as interpolation or least squares fit); and the last category is a banded equation solver for specific linear equations.

The development of a portable cardiac ultrasonoscope

This paper describes a new, portable, battery powered echocardioscope developed at the NASA-Ames Research Center in cooperation with the Stanford University School of Medicine. This instrument has three major advantages over existing equipment. First, it is compact and light weight for easy portability. Second, its DC operation makes it safer to use in remote settings where AC power is unavailable or in intensive care and neonatal units where AC instruments could present electrical hazards for the patient. Third, its design and packaging should enable it to sell for several thousand dollars less than presently marketed ultrasonoscopes. The cooperative development of this instrument, its principles of operation, and the significance of its unique features are presented.

Microbial load monitor

A card configuration which combines the functions of identification, enumeration and antibiotic sensitivity into one card was developed. An instrument package was designed around the card to integrate the card filling, incubation reading, computation and decision making process into one compact unit. Support equipment was also designed to prepare the expandable material used in the MLM.

A parylene coating process for hybrid circuits

The parylene coating process developed during this program consists of (1) obtaining a hybrid cover with a hole in it, (2) sealing of the circuit with a hole in the cover, (3) parylene coating through the hole with the external leads protected from parylene by appropriate fixturing, and (4) sealing of the hole by soldering a pretinned kovar tab. Development of the above process required optimization of the parylene coater parameters to obtain a uniform consistent coating which could offer adequate protection to the circuits, fixture design for packages of various types, determination of the size of the deposition hole, and the amount of dimer charge per run, a process to hermetically seal the deposition holes and establishment of quality control techniques or acceptance criteria for the deposited film.

Surface acoustic wave stabilized oscillators

A number of 401.2 MHz surface acoustic wave (SAW) controlled oscillators were built and tested. The performance of these oscillators was evaluated for possible use as stable oscillators in communication systems. A short term frequency stability of better than 1 x 10 to the minus 9th power for one second was measured for the SAW oscillators. Long term frequency drift was measured and was found to be dependent on SAW design and packaging. Drift rates ranging from 15 ppm in twenty weeks to 2.5 ppm in twenty weeks were observed. Some further improvement was required. The temperature dependence of the saw oscillators was evaluated and it was concluded that some form of temperature compensation will be necessary to meet the requirements of some communication systems.

Plasma disturbances created by probes in the ionosphere and their potential impact on low-energy measurements considered for Spacelab

An experimental investigation of the perturbations created by small conducting bodies immersed in highly rarefied plasma streams was carried out for spherical and cylindrical geometries in the plasma wind tunnel facility at Marshall Space Flight Center. These measurements, as well as the results of previous studies conducted in that facility, were evaluated for the purpose of demonstrating the potential hazards of interference between instruments mounted on diagnostic packages. The scaling in the laboratory work is sufficiently accurate to provide a rough indication of the spatial extent and magnitude of the disturbances created by small probes of 3-6 cm in diameter mounted on board spacecraft moving at altitudes of 150-200 km. The results of such studies have direct application to the location of probes on instrument packages and design of experiments in future space shuttle/Spacelab missions.

Stitch-bond parallel-gap welding for IC circuits

Stitch-bonded flatpacks are superior to soldered dual-in-lines where size, weight, and reliability are important. Results should interest designers of packaging for complex high-reliability electronics, such as that used in security systems, industrial process control, and vehicle electronics.

The software system development for the TAMU real-time fan beam scatterometer data processors

A software package was designed and written to process in real-time any one quadrature channel pair of radar scatterometer signals form the NASA L- or C-Band radar scatterometer systems. The software was successfully tested in the C-Band processor breadboard hardware using recorded radar and NERDAS (NASA Earth Resources Data Annotation System) signals as the input data sources. The processor development program and the overall processor theory of operation and design are described. The real-time processor software system is documented and the results of the laboratory software tests, and recommendations for the efficient application of the data processing capabilities are presented.

The program is divided into six tasks: preliminary design and performance; materials development; advanced concepts; economic assessment; demonstration/verification models; and a 15 meter engineering model. All support the main objective of the program which is the technology development necessary to evaluate, design, manufacture, package, transport and deploy the Hoop/Column reflector by means of a ground-based test program. Progress for each task is reported.

Kilovolt dc solid state remote power controller development

The experience gained in developing and applying solid state power controller (SSPC) technology at high voltage dc (HVDC) potentials and power levels of up to 25 kilowatts is summarized. The HVDC switching devices, power switching concepts, drive circuits, and very fast acting overcurrent protection circuits were analyzed. A 25A bipolar breadboard with Darlington connected switching transistor was built. Fault testing at 900 volts was included. A bipolar transistor packaged breadboard design was developed.
