Average evoked potential correlates of two-flash perceptual discrimination in cats.

Average evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded from the optic tract, lateral geniculate nucleus, and visual cortex of cats trained to discriminate between two successive flashes of light at various interflash intervals (IFI) and a single flash. The percent of correct responses to two-flash stimuli decreased sharply as IFI decreased from 100 to 20 msec. This behavioral response decrement was paralleled by a progressive overlapping of the AEPs to the two flashes and at 20 msec the AEPs resembled those to a single flash at all levels of the visual pathways. Implications for the coding of the information relevant to the discrimination of two flashes are discussed.

Total radiative intensity calculations for 100% H2 and 87% H2-13% He.

Isothermal radiative intensity calculations for 100% H2 and 87% H2-13% He are presented for temperatures of 10,000-25,000 K, density ratios of .0001 to .1, and path lengths of 1.0-30.0 cm. The actual spectral details of the absorption coefficient were computed for 16,000 points from 240 to 30,000 A by summing the various line and continuum radiative processes at each point. This method should result in a very accurate calculation of radiative emission, including an accurate accounting for reabsorption due to overlapping lines.

Bright nebulae near concentrations of high-velocity gas.

Results of a systematic search for bright nebulae that are likely to be emission regions in the vicinity of high-velocity gas, drawing attention to some interesting coincidences that have been found. It is apparent that there is a tendency for many of the high-latitude nebulae to cluster in the vicinity of the high-velocity gas. Some of the most prominent cases of overlap are tabulated. It is emphasized that measurement of the radial velocity of the emission nebulae could confirm the existence of a physical association between high-latitude emission nebulae and high-velocity gas. The fact that Johnson (1972) had used narrow-band filters to find indications of H beta emission in similar high-latitude nebulae suggests that H alpha should readily be detectable with Fabry-Perot interferometry.

Factors affecting frequency and orbit utilization by high power transmission satellite systems.

The factors affecting the sharing of the geostationary orbit by high power (primarily television) satellite systems having the same or adjacent coverage areas and by satellites occupying the same orbit segment are examined and examples using the results of computer computations are given. The factors considered include: required protection ratio, receiver antenna patterns, relative transmitter power, transmitter antenna patterns, satellite grouping, and coverage pattern overlap. The results presented indicate the limits of system characteristics and orbit deployment which can result from mixing systems.

Observations of the stellar Mg II resonance doublet at 2795 and 2802 A.

Spectrophotometry of the Mg II resonance doublet at 2795.5 and 2802.7 A has been performed for five stars with a balloon-borne telescope and spectrometer. Spectral resolution attained was between 0.25 and 0.5 A. A description of the payload and flight operations is given. In beta Lyr the Mg II doublet displayed P Cygni characteristics, while in gamma Lyr the doublet was observed only in absorption. The star beta Cas shows broad overlapping Mg II absorption lines with possible weak emission at the line bottom. In alpha CMi, both components of the doublet are seen in emission at the bottom of the broad absorption feature. The Mg II doublet in alpha Ori is entirely in emission, with each component showing distinct self-reversal.

Earth-based navigation capabilities for outer planet missions.

The role of new Earth-based radio metric data types and of advanced estimation algorithms in navigating an outer planet spacecraft in the vicinity of Saturn has been analyzed. The data types included in the study consist of conventional range and range-rate measurements taken from a single station and simultaneous and nearly simultaneous measurements obtained from pairs of stations during overlapping viewing periods. The utility of a third data set that is produced by explicitly differencing the simultaneous points has also been investigated. The data was processed with a conventional least squares batch filter and with a sequential filter that estimated parameters describing small stochastic accelerations (process noise) acting on the spacecraft. It was found that process noise can produce large errors in the estimates obtained from batch filtering conventional and simultaneous data, and that the only batch filtered estimates that were reliable were those obtained from differenced data. The performance of the simultaneous data in the presence of process noise is greatly improved by sequential filtering.

Study to determine cloud motion from meteorological satellite data

Processing techniques were tested for deducing cloud motion vectors from overlapped portions of pairs of pictures made from meteorological satellites. This was accomplished by programming and testing techniques for estimating pattern motion by means of cross correlation analysis with emphasis placed upon identifying and reducing errors resulting from various factors. Techniques were then selected and incorporated into a cloud motion determination program which included a routine which would select and prepare sample array pairs from the preprocessed test data. The program was then subjected to limited testing with data samples selected from the Nimbus 4 THIR data provided by the 11.5 micron channel.

Design, processing, and testing of lsi arrays for space station

The design of a MOS 256-bit Random Access Memory (RAM) is discussed. Technological achievements comprise computer simulations that accurately predict performance; aluminum-gate COS/MOS devices including a 256-bit RAM with current sensing; and a silicon-gate process that is being used in the construction of a 256-bit RAM with voltage sensing. The Si-gate process increases speed by reducing the overlap capacitance between gate and source-drain, thus reducing the crossover capacitance and allowing shorter interconnections. The design of a Si-gate RAM, which is pin-for-pin compatible with an RCA bulk silicon COS/MOS memory (type TA 5974), is discussed in full. The Integrated Circuit Tester (ICT) is limited to dc evaluation, but the diagnostics and data collecting are under computer control. The Silicon-on-Sapphire Memory Evaluator (SOS-ME, previously called SOS Memory Exerciser) measures power supply drain and performs a minimum number of tests to establish operation of the memory devices. The Macrodata MD-100 is a microprogrammable tester which has capabilities of extensive testing at speeds up to 5 MHz. Beam-lead technology was successfully integrated with SOS technology to make a simple device with beam leads. This device and the scribing are discussed.

Two-phase charge-coupled device

A charge-transfer efficiency of 99.99% per stage was achieved in the fat-zero mode of operation of 64- and 128-stage two-phase charge-coupled shift registers at 1.0-MHz clock frequency. The experimental two-phase charge-coupled shift registers were constructed in the form of polysilicon gates overlapped by aluminum gates. The unidirectional signal flow was accomplished by using n-type substrates with 0.5 to 1.0 ohm-cm resistivity in conjunction with a channel oxide thickness of 1000 A for the polysilicon gates and 3000 A for the aluminum gates. The operation of the tested shift registers with fat zero is in good agreement with the free-charge transfer characteristics expected for the tested structures. The charge-transfer losses observed when operating the experimental shift registers without the fat zero are attributed to fast interface state trapping. The analytical part of the report contains a review backed up by an extensive appendix of the free-charge transfer characteristics of CCD's in terms of thermal diffusion, self-induced drift, and fringing field drift. Also, a model was developed for the charge-transfer losses resulting from charge trapping by fast interface states. The proposed model was verified by the operation of the experimental two-phase charge-coupled shift registers.

Foundations for a theory of gravitation theories

A foundation is laid for future analyses of gravitation theories. This foundation is applicable to any theory formulated in terms of geometric objects defined on a 4-dimensional spacetime manifold. The foundation consists of (1) a glossary of fundamental concepts; (2) a theorem that delineates the overlap between Lagrangian-based theories and metric theories; (3) a conjecture (due to Schiff) that the Weak Equivalence Principle implies the Einstein Equivalence Principle; and (4) a plausibility argument supporting this conjecture for the special case of relativistic, Lagrangian-based theories.

The geologic evolution of the moon

A synthesis of pre- and post-Apollo 11 studies is presented to produce an outline of the moon's geologic evolution from three lines of evidence: (1) relative ages of lunar landforms and rock types, (2) absolute ages of returned lunar samples, and (3) petrography, chemistry, and isotopic ratios of lunar rocks and soils. It is assumed that the ray craters, circular mare basins, and most intermediate circular landforms are primarily of impact origin, although many other landforms are volcanic or of hybrid origin. The moon's evolution is divided into four main stages, each including several distinct but overlapping events or processes.

Proposal to evaluate the use of ERTS-A imagery in mapping and managing soil and range resources in the Sand Hills Region of Nebraska

The author has identified the following significant results. There appears to be a direct relationship between densitometry values obtained with MSS band 5 imagery and forage density for those range sites measured on the imagery, provided site category identification is indicated by other forms of imagery or ground truth. Overlap of density values for different site categories with differing forage condition classes does not allow assigning a given forage density value for a given densitometer value unless the range site category is known.

Development of the weld-braze joining process

A joining process, designated weld-brazing, was developed which combines resistance spot welding and brazing. Resistance spot welding is used to position and aline the parts, as well as to establish a suitable faying-surface gap for brazing. Fabrication is then completed at elevated temperature by capillary flow of the braze alloy into the joint. The process was used successfully to fabricate Ti-6Al-4V alloy joints by using 3003 aluminum braze alloy and should be applicable to other metal-braze systems. Test results obtained on single-overlap and hat-stiffened panel specimens show that weld-brazed joints were superior in tensile shear, stress rupture, fatigue, and buckling compared with joints fabricated by conventional means. Another attractive feature of the process is that the brazed joint is hermetically sealed by the braze material, which may eliminate many of the sealing problems encountered with riveted or spot welded structures. The relative ease of fabrication associated with the weld-brazing process may make it cost effective over conventional joining techniques.

Use of ERTS data for a multidisciplinary analysis of Michigan resources

The author has identified the following significant results. A computerized procedure has been developed to correlate coordinates from topographic maps and/or aerial photographs with ERTS data coordinates. Application to data from other multispectral scanners is anticipated. In the procedure, a map transformation from earth coordinates to ERTS point and line numbers is calculated using selected ground control points and the method of least squares. The map transformation is then applied to the earth coordinates of selected areas to obtain the corresponding ERTS point and line numbers. An optional provision allows moving the boundaries of the plots inwards by variable distances (typically half a resolution element) so the selected pixels will not overlap adjacent features.

Satellite geological and geophysical remote sensing of Iceland

The author has identified the following significant results. A low sun angle (as low as 7 degrees) on ERTS-1 imagery, particularly when the terrain is snow-covered, markedly enhances subtle geologic structure and landforms. Hot springs, discharging into frozen lakes, from an ice-free area which can be easily seen on ERTS-1 imagery. In remote areas ERTS-1 imagery can be used in climatological studies by using the time of lake ice freeze-up and break-up as a measure over large areas. ERTS-1 imagery of the erupting volcano, Kirkjufell, on the island of Heimaey was cloud covered. ERTS-1 provides a powerful new tool for volcanologists to study erupting volcanoes, new deposits of lava, and the direction and areal distribution of the eruption plume. Some success was achieved in a preliminary study, using photogrammetric instrumentation, of measuring relative elevation of mountains using ERTS-1 imagery of iceland, where considerable overlap exists in successive orbits.
