Physics Opportunities in the Far-forward Region at the Future Electron–Ion Collider

The Electron–Ion Collider provides the opportunity to drastically advance our understanding of QCD and the multidimensional structure of both protons and nuclei. An essential component of the EIC physics program is the identification and characterization of exclusive, diffractive, and tagged events using detectors integrated with the outgoing hadron beamline, the so-called “far-forward” detectors. The ePIC experiment includes a suite of far-forward detectors designed to deliver the necessary geometric coverage and resolution required to achieve the exclusive physics program envisioned at the EIC. Additionally, to the multidimensional imaging program at the EIC, topics such as spectator tagging in e + d and e + 3 He reactions to access structure functions and searches for gluon saturation in e + A collisions are also enabled by this experimental apparatus. In these proceedings, the ePIC far-forward detectors will be briefly introduced, and a few selected physics topics focused on tagged deep-inelastic scattering will be discussed.

Deep-Learning-Based Multi-Timescale Load Forecasting in Buildings: Opportunities and Challenges from Research to Deployment

Electricity load forecasting for buildings and campuses is becoming increasingly important as the penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) grows. Efficient operation and dispatch of DERs require reasonably accurate predictions of future energy consumption in order to conduct near-real-time optimized dispatch of on-site generation and storage assets. Electric utilities have traditionally performed load forecasting for load pockets spanning large geographic areas, and therefore, forecasting has not been a common practice by buildings and campus operators. Given the growing trends of research and prototyping in the grid-interactive efficient buildings domain, characteristics beyond simple algorithm forecast accuracy are important in determining the algorithm's true utility for smart buildings. Other characteristics include the overall design of the deployed architecture and the operational efficiency of the forecasting system. In this work, we present a deep-learning-based load forecasting system that predicts the building load at 1-hour intervals for 18 hours in the future. We also discuss challenges associated with the real-time deployment of such systems as well as the research opportunities presented by a fully functional forecasting system that has been developed within the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Intelligent Campus program.

The Real Inputs Behind TCO: Duty Cycle Realism and Opportunity Costs using T3CO

NLR's Transportation Technology Total Cost of Ownership (T3CO) model provides realistic and robust analysis, capturing the impact of real world duty cycles and their variability in operating and opportunity costs. Case studies show that these contributions to costs can be significant and can alter conclusions about technology cost effectiveness.

Technoeconomic Opportunity Analysis for Local Power Generation in Falls City, Nebraska

Falls City is a small community in Nebraska interested in understanding how energy from local energy systems could support the community's economic development planning. To address the current community needs and address the future energy demand technical assistance conducted through the Communities Local Energy Action Program (Communities LEAP) assessed the technical and economic opportunities of adding energy technologies to Falls City's municipally owned and operated electric utility system. The modeling performed considered the technical and economic feasibility of technologies using the System Advisor Model (SAM). The modeling explored three technology configurations using multiple years of historical weather and wholesale cost data (2015-2022 & a typical meteorological year), and two different wholesale escalation rates (0.3% and 2.5%). Wholesale energy prices were based on the Southwest Power Pool's (SPP) real-time energy market and the annual escalation rates of these rates based on historical SPP wholesale and national retail electricity price trends. Results from the modeling showed that at current CAPEX costs and SPP wholesale electricity costs no technology combination averaged across the scenarios run provide a positive net present value (NPV). External financial support, changes in market conditions, and additional revenue streams would help create more economically favorable projects. As conditions change re-evaluation may be necessary.

RTN-107: The Rubin Observatory Target-of-Opportunity Mock Data Challenge

We describe the activities of the Target-of-Opportunity mock data challenge, taking place from Sep 22 2025 - Oct 18 2025. We center this activity in four questions that are critical for maximizing the scientific output of the ToO system: (1) How quickly can Rubin Observatory start observing after a ToO alert is received? (2) How efficient is Rubin Observatory at recovering the host of a ToO event? (3) How accurate are the observing strategies that the community has created for the ToO program? (4) How can expert ToO scientists interact effectively with the ToO system, where many processes are fully automated? In this challenge, and the report summarized herein, we aim to answer the aforementioned questions to better the Rubin ToO program.
