The photometry of flat, basaltic surfaces

A photometer was developed and successfully operated to obtain photometric measurements on several flat, particulate surfaces of basalt for coplanar scattering geometries. The test materials were two size ranges each of two different basalts with significantly different albedos. The measurements include a range of phase angles from 30 to 80 degrees and were obtained by varying the angles of incidence and emission such that the phase angle remained constant. The data were used elsewhere in the verification of the Meador-Weaver photometric function and are presented here in the form of Minnaert plots. In this form the data offered the first support for the accuracy of the Meador-Weaver photometric function because of a deviation of the data from a straight line trend at larger departures from the mirror point geometry. This trend is predicted by the Meador-Weaver function but not by the Minnaert function. The failure of photometric data to support the Minnaert function was not evident in earlier measurements because of the restriction of planetary data to small departures from the mirror point geometry and to small values of the phase angle.

Design charts for arbitrarily pivoted, liquid-lubricated flat-sector-pad thrust bearing

A flat, sector-shaped geometry for a liquid-lubricated thrust bearing is analyzed considering both the pitch and roll of the pad. Results are presented in design charts that enable a direct approach to the design of point- and line-pivoted, tilting pad bearings. A comparison is made with the Mitchell bearing approximation and it is found that this approximation always overestimates load capacity.

Computer program for flat sector thrust bearing performance

A versatile computer program is presented which achieves a rapid, numerical solution of the Reynolds equation for a flat sector thrust pad bearing with either compressible or liquid lubricants. Program input includes a range in values of the geometric and operating parameters of the sector bearing. Performance characteristics are obtained from the calculated bearing pressure distribution. These are the load capacity, center of pressure coordinates, frictional energy dissipation, and flow rates of liquid lubricant across the bearing edges. Two sample problems are described.

Velocity and temperature profiles in near-critical nitrogen flowing past a horizontal flat plate

Boundary layer velocity and temperature profiles were measured for nitrogen near its thermodynamic critical point flowing past a horizontal flat plate. The results were compared measurements made for vertically upward flow. The boundary layer temperatures ranged from below to above the thermodynamic critical temperature. For wall temperatures below the thermodynamic critical temperature there was little variation between the velocity and temperature profiles in three orientations. In all three orientations the point of crossing into the critical temperature region is marked by a significant flattening of the velocity and temperature profiles and also a decrease in heat transfer coefficient.

Mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and scale in a subsonic turbulent jet impinging normal to a large flat plate

To explain the increase in noise when a jet impinges on a large flat plate, mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and scale were measured at nominal nozzle-exit velocities of 61, 138, and 192 meters per second with the plate located 7.1 nozzle-exit diameters from the nozzle. The maximum turbulence intensities in free and impinging jets were about the same; however, the integral length scale near the plate surface was only about one-half the free jet scale. The measured intensities and length scales, in conjunction with a contemporary theory of aerodynamic noise, provided a good explanation for the observed increase in noise associated with the impinging jet. An increase in the volume of highly turbulent flow could be the principal reason for the increase in noise.

Stall flutter and nonlinear divergence of a two-dimensional flat plate wing

Tests were conducted in a small wind tunnel to study the torsional stall flutter behavior of a two-dimensional flat-plate wing pivoted about the midchord. The nonlinear static divergence equilibrium properties of the wing were well predicted from the measured static moment characteristics. Large amplitude limit cycles ranging from plus or minus 11 degrees to plus or minus 100 degrees were observed. Stall flutter occurred above a critical value of a reduced frequency of about 2. Self-excitation occurred for initial angles of attack between 0 and 8 degrees. Nondimensional harmonic coefficients were extracted from the free transient vibration tests for amplitudes up to 80 degrees.

Three-dimensional vector modeling and restoration of flat finite wave tank radiometric measurements

In this paper, a three-dimensional Fourier transform inversion method describing the interaction between water surface emitted radiation from a flat finite wave tank and antenna radiation characteristics is reported. The transform technique represents the scanning of the antenna mathematically as a correlation. Computation time is reduced by using the efficient and economical fast Fourier transform algorithm. To verify the inversion method, computations have been made and compared with known data and other available results. The technique has been used to restore data of the finite wave tank system and other available antenna temperature measurements made at the Cape Cod Canal. The restored brightness temperatures serve as better representations of the emitted radiation than the measured antenna temperatures.

An accurate solution of the gas lubricated, flat sector thrust bearing

A flat sector shaped pad geometry for gas lubricated thrust bearings is analyzed considering both pitch and roll angles of the pad and the true film thickness distribution. Maximum load capacity is achieved when the pad is tilted so as to create a uniform minimum film thickness along the pad trailing edge. Performance characteristics for various geometries and operating conditions of gas thrust bearings are presented in the form of design curves. A comparison is made with the rectangular slider approximation. It is found that this approximation is unsafe for practical design, since it always overestimates load capacity.

Fixed flat plate collector with a reversible vee-trough concentrator

An asymmetrical-reversible vee-trough concentrator for use both with nonevacuated and evacuated receivers is proposed in order to improve the performance of a fixed flat plate collector. The device is capable of maintaining a year-round concentration factor of about 2 while eliminating the complications of the tilt adjustments of the collector box assembly. Efficiency improvements and cost reductions for temperatures of about 100 and 200 C are offered for the nonvacuum and vacuum tube versions, respectively. A major advantage of the vee-trough is the enhancement of the incident flux, thus extending the collection period. The vacuum collector is suitable for supplying heat to solar Rankine systems, while the nonvacuum version can be used for air conditioning purposes via an absorption air conditioner.

Effects of jet decay rate on jet induced loads on a flat plate

Experimental modelling of the interaction between a jet and an aircraft wing or fuselage in VTOL aircraft was undertaken using a cold jet exiting perpendicular to a flat plate in a uniform cross-flow. Effects of jet decay rate and jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio, R, on the induced load distribution were investigated. Jet decay rate was increased by using cylindrical centerbodies submerged in the jet nozzle, which caused nonuniform initial jet velocity profiles. Quicker jet decay rate, corresponding to the presence of a centerbody, resulted in as much as 50% reduction in the induced pressure loads on the plate. This has implications in interpretation of results from earlier VTOL model studies of jet induced loads, where the jets have often had relatively slow decay rates due to uniform initial velocity profiles

Gravitational effects on chemically reacting laminar boundary layer flows over a horizontal flat plate

A theoretical study of the chemically reacting laminar boundary layer flow over a horizontal flat plate with gravitationally induced buoyant force is presented. A diffusion flame sheet model was used to describe the combustion process. The effects of gravity on the purely force convection flow can be characterized by a dimensionless coordinate quantity, which is involved in the generation of the governing equations. A numerical solution of the zero and first order governing equations subject to the appropriate physical boundary conditions was obtained. It is shown that the cross stream buoyancy induced body force acts effectively to produce a streamwise pressure gradient in the fluid adjacent to the plate surface. It is concluded that buoyancy plays an important role in boundary layer diffusion flames.

Handtool has bifurcated handle that can be tightened so that clamping head grips pack securely. Tool easily removes hybrid integrated-ciruit flat packs from printed-wiring boards. It does not damage circuit or board; thus, board can be reused with replacement circuit, and old circuit can be analyzed for faults and, if possible, repaired.
