The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

Recurrent features of amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory

The planar three-gluon form factor for the chiral stress tensor operator in planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is an analog of the Higgs-to-three-gluon scattering amplitude in QCD. The amplitude (symbol) bootstrap program has provided a wealth of high-loop perturbative data about this form factor, with results up to eight loops available. The symbol of the form factor at L loops is given by words of length 2L in six letters with associated integer coefficients. In this paper, we analyze this data, describing patterns of zero coefficients and relations between coefficients. We find many sequences of words whose coefficients are given by closed-form expressions which we expect to be valid at any loop order. Moreover, motivated by our previous machine-learning analysis, we identify simple recursion relations that relate the coefficient of a word to the coefficients of particular lower-loop words. These results open an exciting door for understanding scattering amplitudes at all loop orders.

Densification and microstructure features of lithium hydride fabrication

The manufacturing of lithium hydride (LiH) utilizing uniaxial pressing, which offers fabrication with tailorable properties via microstructure control, can lead to the expansion in application of LiH while bypassing the challenges presented by historical casting manufacturing techniques. Through control of consolidation conditions such as pressure, temperature, dwell time and powder load, the presented work highlights the densification of LiH, with an emphasis on quantifying oxygen content, for applications requiring a specific density range necessary for optimized material performance. Karl Fischer Titration and X-ray Diffraction proved useful in determining oxygen and phase content while Computed Tomography and Scanning Electron Microscopy provided structural analysis. The temperature dependent densification of LiH fit with an Arrhenius term resulted in an activation energy of 21.2 kJ/mol. Images of fractured surfaces of LiH pressed at 500 °C revealed drastic grain coarsening, aided by the presence of oxygen impurities.

Distinctive features of fluorescence and waveguides in magnesium aluminate spinel crystals driven by structural discrepancy

Transparent polycrystalline ceramics are of significant importance for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. Developing a deeper understanding of their thermodynamic behavior is essential for achieving their maximum output performance in technological applications. This study provides a systematic investigation into the thermal excitation-induced fluorescence kinetics and waveguide characteristics of Magnesium Aluminate Spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ) single crystals, with a focus on the intricate relationship between structure and properties. High-temperature extreme environments through irradiation with swift heavy ions 645.0 MeV Xe and 352.8 MeV Fe ions were created; the atomic deposition energy threshold (E th ) associated with disorder morphologies was assessed between 0.91 and 0.99 eV atom –1 . The track prediction model was developed to support the theoretical prediction of track formation. Electronic energy loss (E ele ) disrupts the balance of the initial structure through the thermal spike effect, leading to the formation of absorption-related F and F + color centers. These defects enhance photoluminescence in the visible spectrum and result in an effective modulation of the intrinsic bandgap. Moreover, as ion beams penetrate into the material, the uneven damage distribution induces the formation of waveguide structures. In conclusion, these findings provide valuable insights into the fabrication of functional devices through irradiation technologies and the structural changes of MgAl 2 O 4 at high temperatures within extreme environments.

Distinctive features of structural evolution and thermodynamic response in wide-bandgap semiconductors driven by intense electronic excitation

Radiation-tolerant material selection requires balancing lattice rigidity, defect dynamics, and electronic stability, as shown by covalent SiC outperforming ionic Ga 2 O 3 and GaN under extreme environments. Responding to intense electronic excitation, irradiation-driven phase segregation (β → δ/κ in Ga 2 O 3 ) and core–shell track (disordered structure in GaN), accompanied by elemental redistribution, contrastingly, exceptional radiation tolerance manifested by comparatively minimal lattice distortion (0.17 % strain variation) was demonstrated in SiC. These differential responses are primarily attributed to two fundamental mechanisms: (i) thermodynamic driving forces governing defect migration and phase separation, and (ii) the synergistic effects of robust covalent bonding composition coupled with efficient defect recombination processes. Here, the stronger electron–phonon (e-ph) coupling in Ga 2 O 3 (4.34 × 1018 W m −3 K −1 ) and GaN (3.55 × 10 18 W m −3 K −1 ) enhances lattice energy deposition, triggering thermal spikes (ΔT ≫ T m ) and structural transition behaviors, whereas weaker e-ph coupling in SiC (3.69 × 10 18 W m −3 K −1 ), relatively high thermodynamic parameters and efficient energy dissipation suppress thermal spikes to maintaining lattice integrity. The photoresponse degradation driven by enhanced radiative recombination is dominant in N-doped SiC, while V-doped systems achieve defect-mediated photoconduction optimization characterized by abrupt current transitions, matching fluorescence yield evolutions, and directly connecting defect engineering to optoelectronic performance.

The role of thermodynamic features on the functional activity of electron bifurcating enzymes

Electron bifurcation is a biological mechanism to drive a thermodynamically unfavorable redox reaction through direct coupling with an exergonic reaction. This process allows microorganisms to generate high energy reducing equivalents in order to sustain life and is often found in anaerobic metabolism, where the energy economy of the cell is poor. Recent work has revealed details of the redox energy landscapes for a variety of electron bifurcating enzymes, greatly expanding the understanding of how energy is transformed by this unique mechanism. Here we highlight the plasticity of these emerging landscapes, what is known regarding their mechanistic underpinnings, and provide a context for interpreting their biochemical activity within the physiological framework. Here, we conclude with an outlook for propelling the field toward an integrative understanding of the impact of electron bifurcation.

Three pairs of fungal Trametes strains isolated from distinct geographic origins show conserved genomic features and adaptive response to plant biomass

The genomes of white-rot fungi hold extended repertoires of enzymes active on virtually all the chemical bonds that intertwine lignocellulose polymers, and several Trametes species have been identified as powerful tools for biorefinery or bioremediation. However, only few studies have addressed the intra-species polymorphism one would expect from fungal strains collected in contrasted environments. We compared the genome sequence of pairs of strains collected in different geographic areas, for each of three fungal species. Using an updated list of the predicted functions for fungal ligno- and cellulolytic enzymes (CAZymes), we observed a high conservation of the gene repertoires among the six strains. We compared the adaptative response of the fungi grown on crystalline cellulose, wheat straw, aspen or pine sawdust by transcriptomics and secretomics. The gene regulation profiles were determined by the species and the substrates, rather than the strain. The secretomes did not show marked differences in the sets of secreted CAZymes after 3 day-growth on the substrates. We identified five transcription factor genes and two sesquiterpenoid synthesis genes induced during growth on lignocellulose. Wider studies using larger sets of strains will be necessary to evaluate the genericity of our findings, and to assess the phenotype diversity one could expect from geographic diversity as compared to taxonomic diversity in Trametes fungi.

Histopathologic and proteogenomic heterogeneity reveals features of clear cell renal cell carcinoma aggressiveness

Clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs) represent ∼75% of RCC cases and account for most RCC-associated deaths. Inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) results in varying prognosis and treatment outcomes. To obtain the most comprehensive profile of ccRCC, we perform integrative histopathologic, proteogenomic, and metabolomic analyses on 305 ccRCC tumor segments and 166 paired adjacent normal tissues from 213 cases. Combining histologic and molecular profiles reveals ITH in 90% of ccRCCs, with 50% demonstrating immune signature heterogeneity. High tumor grade, along with BAP1 mutation, genome instability, increased hypermethylation, and a specific protein glycosylation signature define a high-risk disease subset, where UCHL1 expression displays prognostic value. Single-nuclei RNA sequencing of the adverse sarcomatoid and rhabdoid phenotypes uncover gene signatures and potential insights into tumor evolution. In vitro cell line studies confirm the potential of inhibiting identified phosphoproteome targets. This study molecularly stratifies aggressive histopathologic subtypes that may inform more effective treatment strategies.
