LYNM PE1 Pre-Experiment A Site Characterization Report

Underground chemical explosive experiments such as LYNM PE1 generate large multi-phenomenological datasets, require complex site preparation and build out, and utilize cutting edge models and analysis techniques to analyze and simulate the explosion-induced signals. This wide range of outcomes makes it a necessity to thoroughly characterize the testbed in advance of experiments in a way that complements the wide suite of data being generated. Here, we present a broad overview of the site characterization work and data collection that was conducted before Experiment A, which is the first in a series of three PE1 experiments. This work includes, but is not limited to, geologic mapping, physical sample collection, analysis of material properties, geophysical borehole logging, and in-situ measurements. This information was collected by a large, dedicated team and was used to inform site construction, finalize instrumentation placement, generate Geologic Framework Models, feed pre-experiment predictions, and facilitate post-experiment data analysis.

Relativity experiment on Helios - A status report

The relativity experiment on Helios (Experiment 11) uses S-band and Doppler data, and spacecraft-solar-orbital data to measure the effects of general relativity in the solar system and the quadrupole moment in the solar gravitational field. Specifically, Experiment 11 is converned with measuring the following effects: (1) relativistic orbital corrections described by two parameters of the space-time metric which are both equal to unity in Einstein's theory; (2) orbital perturbations caused by a finite quadrupole moment of an oblate sun, described by zonal harmonics in the solar gravitational field.

Beryllium Isotopes in Rainfall for Stratospheric-Tropospheric Exchange Dynamics Experiment (BIRDIE) (Final Report)

The Beryllium Isotopes in Rainfall for Stratospheric-Tropospheric Exchange Dynamics Experiment or BIRDIE was a precipitation collection campaign designed to measure cosmogenic isotopes of beryllium in rainfall and other forms of precipitation across the DOE Southern Great Plains (SGP) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site. Precipitation samples were collected over three weeks (May 21-June 10, 2022) at 11 SGP sites across a 120 km 2 domain in northern and central Oklahoma. The field campaign targeted summer-time convection rain events. We aimed to capture any spatial and/or temporal variability in the concentrations of beryllium-10 (10Be) and beryllium-7 (7Be) across the SGP ARM site during these rainfall events. The ratio of 10Be to 7Be (10/7Be) has been shown to be a powerful tracer for transport processes in the stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) system (e.g., Koch and Rind 1998). Any observed variability is analyzed to see if it could be linked to STE processes, including overshooting of deep convection clouds which penetrate the lower stratosphere. Six wet weather system events were collected within our three-week span. Five out of six of these rainfall events are classified as moderately to strongly convective. Those events are studied in more detail. The five systems also follow each other over a short time period of eleven days. In our rainfall samples we observed spatial and event variability in the concentrations of beryllium-10 and -7 which resulted in variability of 10/7 Be ratios. Each weather event appeared to exhibit a unique 10/7Be pattern across the domain that was not directly linked to storm total precipitation amount. To better understand the causes for this spatial variability, cloud characteristics in the domain were looked at to assess cloud type, cloud height and depth information. We also ran Hysplit back trajectories to identify possible air mass and moisture origins across our events. Detailed analysis is still on-going. The purpose of this technical report is to provide background on using cosmogenic isotopes as atmospheric tracers, describe the experimental design, and present the beryllium concentration and ratio data.

Mariner 9 celestial mechanics experiment - A status report.

There are two basic efforts in the Mariner 9 celestial mechanics experiment: the determination of the gravity field of Mars and the performance of a very precise test of the theory of general relativity. In addition, there are a number of astrodynamic constants that are being determined. All the analyses are based on the Mariner 9 radio tracking data.

Qualification of Commercially Available Silicon Carbide for Passive Thermometry in Reactor Experiments – FY23 Status Report

Silicon carbide (SiC) is often used as a passive temperature indicator for uninstrumented in-core nuclear experiments. For the past several decades, Oak Ridge National Laboratory has relied primarily on SiC thermometry manufactured by Dow Chemical Company, formerly Rohm and Haas because of the material’s high density and reduced grain boundary elements. Although Dow SiC has performed well in this application, this material is no longer commercially available, and a new supplier is needed for future experiments. To determine a suitable replacement, a study was initiated on five types of SiC from four commercial vendors. Several critical properties, including density, electrical resistivity, chemical purity, grain structure, crystal structure, and strength were measured in samples from each material. Additionally, thermometry specimens were manufactured for irradiation in the High Flux Isotope Reactor at nominal temperatures of 300°C, 600°C, and 900°C, which will be measured using continuous dilatometry at a later date. This report provides an update of commercially available SiC material characterization and the irradiation capsule design.

TRACER-ACE: Aerosol Characterization Experiment Field Campaign Report

An objective for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) is to provide high-temporal-and-spatial resolution observations of convective clouds in the Houston region, over a broad range of environmental and aerosol regimes (Jensen et al. 2022). The TRACER siting strategy was to deploy the first ARM Mobile Facility (AMF1), with its full suite of cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and atmospheric state measurement capabilities, in a region that experiences the full diversity of aerosol properties from the Houston domain including rural, urban, and industrial atmospheric aerosol environments (see Figure 1).

The RSRA/X-Wing experiment - A status report

This paper reports on the current status of the NASA/Army Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA)/X-Wing Experiment program designed to demonstrate the technology readiness of the X-Wing concept for a prototype vehicle. Program accomplishments, test results on all of the necessary major hardware elements, and the results of flight tests are described. Future wind tunnel testing of the full-scale rotor system in the NASA NF SAC facility is presently being planned; these tests must be completed before an objective assessment can be made regarding the viability of the RSRA/X-Wing concept for an operational aircraft.
