Design and optimization of a modular hydrogen-based integrated energy system to maximize revenue via nuclear-renewable sources

Here, this paper demonstrates a novel modular distributed framework that uses optimal energy-dispatching strategies to enable greater flexibility and profitability in nuclear-renewable integrated energy systems (NR-IES). Hydrogen is used as a commodity in this framework since its production can improve grid stability and system operational flexibility, decarbonize heavy industry, and create an additional revenue stream for electricity generators, particularly nuclear power plants with high operational expenses. The proposed solution addresses the challenges associated with merging multiple software and services from various domains by using functional mock-up units (FMU) to co-simulate diverse subsystems designed in various platforms. The tightly coupled integrated energy system (IES) is optimized to maximize revenue by utilizing the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique to make smart dispatching decisions based on variable electricity prices and the availability of renewable energy. Proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm is used in training and testing the DRL agent. Over a period of 120 days, the proposed hydrogen-based IES framework showed about 10% revenue boost compared to a non-hydrogen generating baseline IES while also providing an easily-adoptable framework which can help to improve the flexibility of future generation nuclear power plants.

Convex Optimization of Integrated Power-Gas Energy Flow Model With Applications to Probabilistic Energy Flow

Energy flow calculation is a fundamental problem of the integrated power and gas system (IPGS) operation and planning. However, the nonlinear gas flow model introduces major challenges to the energy flow calculation. In this paper, we propose a tractably convex optimization model to solve the energy flow problem in IPGSs. It is demonstrated that the proposed optimization model has the same optimal solution as the original nonlinear steady energy flow model. Also, piecewise linearization is adopted to tightly linearize the nonlinear objective function of the model, which transforms the formulated convex optimization into a linear program one. Thus, the computation complexity of the proposed energy flow model is significantly reduced as compared with the existing methods. In addition, the proposed model can be extended to probabilistic energy flow estimation. Extensive case studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed energy flow model using three IPGSs.

Efficient Parameterization of Density Functional Tight-Binding for 5 f -Elements: A Th–O Case Study

Density functional tight binding (DFTB) models for f-element species are challenging to parametrize owing to the large number of adjustable parameters. The explicit optimization of the terms entering the semiempirical DFTB Hamiltonian related to f orbitals is crucial to generating a reliable parametrization for f-block elements, because they play import roles in bonding interactions. However, since the number of parameters grows quadratically with the number of orbitals, the computational cost for parameter optimization is much more expensive for the f-elements than for the main group elements. In this work we present a set of efficient approaches for mitigating the hurdle imposed by the large size of the parameter space. A novel group-by-orbital correction functions for two-center bond integrals was developed. With this approach the number of parameters is reduced, and it grows linearly with the number of elements, maintaining the accuracy and the number of parameters, in the case of f elements, by more than 40%. The parameter optimization step was accelerated by means of the mini-batch BFGS method. This method allows parameter optimizations with much larger training sets than other single batch methods. A stochastic optimizer was employed that helped overcome shallow local minima in the objective function. The proposed algorithm was used to parametrize the DFTB Hamiltonian for the Th–O system, which was subsequently applied to the study of ThO 2 nanoparticles. The training set consisted of 6322 unique structures, which is barely feasible with conventional optimization methods. The optimized parameter set, LANL-ThO, displays good agreement with DFT-calculated properties such as energies, forces, and structures for both clusters and bulk ThO 2 . Benefiting from the fewer number of parameters and lower computational costs for objective function evaluations, this new approach shows its potential applications in DFTB parametrization for elements with high angular momentum, which present a challenge to conventional methods.

Optimized Gear Selection to Maximize Energy Savings in Electric Traction Drives for Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles

Multi‑gear transmission systems are commonly used in electric traction drives for medium and heavy‑duty vehicles, while most passenger‑vehicle electric drivetrains rely on a single fixed ratio to reduce cost, weight, and complexity. Using multiple gear ratios can enable downsizing of the motor and inverter while still meeting performance requirements. Additionally, appropriately chosen ratios allow the motor to operate more frequently in high‑efficiency regions, improving overall energy usage and reducing operating costs over the drive cycle. This paper presents a systematic approach for selecting optimal gear ratios for electric drive systems. A neural‑network model is first developed to represent motor losses across the full torque–speed range using data generated from finite element analysis. This model enables fast, accurate evaluation of motor efficiency under varying operating conditions. A genetic‑algorithm‑based optimization framework is then applied to identify gear ratios that maximize energy cost savings over the drive cycle, with the resulting optimal ratios stored for real‑time implementation.

Wattile: Probabilistic Deep Learning-based Forecasting of Building Energy Consumption [SWR-20-94]

Accurate energy forecasting is becoming critical due to many reasons: i ) optimal distributed energy resources operations and dispatch, ii) fault detection and diagnostics, and iii) meeting operational energy efficiency targets. Wattile uses deep learning (DL) for the building's short-term load forecasting application. Two specific types of neural networks called, Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Sequence-to-Sequence (S2S) models are used to make predictions. Forecasting models are trained using online historical weather and occupancy indicator data streams from the Intelligent Campus Program's data acquisition systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for main meters and sub-meters of multiple building types. These models use probabilistic methods to provide quantile-based forecasts in addition to nominal conditional median predictions of electricity consumption.

Ultra-thick three-dimensional interpenetrating graphene electrode architectures for high volumetric density energy storage

For electrochemical energy storage, increasing the electrode thickness is an effective approach to achieving higher energy density from a given material. However, this often compromises ion transport, leading to diminished performance. Here, in this study, we present a novel platform for fabricating complex 3D interpenetrating electrode structures via photo-polymerization 3D printing, integrated with computational structural optimization for energy storage. The platform employs an acrylate resin system infused with graphene oxide (GO), enabling high-fidelity printing of optimized porous structures and facilitating efficient electron and ion transport in ultra-thick electrodes. The optimized 3D layouts substantially enhance energy and power densities compared to conventional configurations, ensuring superior material utilization and minimal ohmic losses. Supercapacitors fabricated using this approach achieved an exceptional energy density of 4.7 Wh L−1 at a power density of 1689.0 W L−1, surpassing traditional designs. This work underscores the transformative role of structural optimization in advancing electrochemical performance and establishes a versatile pathway for developing next-generation energy storage systems with exceptional efficiency and functionality.

Gel‐Derived Amorphous Bismuth–Nickel Alloy Promotes Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via Optimizing Nitrogen Adsorption and Activation

Abstract To achieve the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for efficient and sustainable NH 3 production, catalysts should exhibit high selectivity and activity with optimal adsorption energy. Herein we developed a three‐dimensional (3D) amorphous BiNi alloy toward a significantly enhanced NRR compared with its crystalline and metal counterparts. Ni alloying enables the chemisorption of nitrogen and the lower free‐energy change for the *NNH formation, and the 3D alloy electrocatalyst exhibits high catalytic activity for NH 3 production with a yield rate of 17.5 μg h −1 mg cat −1 and Faradaic efficiency of 13.8 %. The enhanced electron transfer and increased electrochemical surface area were revealed in the interconnected porous scaffold, affording it sufficiently efficient and stable activity for potential practical applications. This work offers new insights into optimizing the adsorption energy of reactants and intermediates combined with tuning the crystallinity of NRR electrocatalysts.

A deep learning-based battery sizing optimization tool for hybridizing generation plants

Hybrid generation and energy storage systems offer the ability to increase flexibility of the combined asset. This flexibility can be used to increase provision of services already provided by the generation asset, such as timing sale of electricity to the energy market during high price periods, and also enable provision of additional services, such as ancillary services or contribute to resource adequacy. From a generation asset owner perspective, the decision to hybridize includes selecting an energy storage system that, among other factors, maximizes financial performance of the energy storage investment. Yet, existing tools to optimize energy storage sizing are either too rudimentary (i.e., based on “rules of thumb”) or too complex to implement (i.e., require specialized engineering and software knowledge and a high-performance computer to run). This work presents a novel deep learning-based battery sizing optimization tool that is designed to help generation asset owners easily assess preliminary sizing considerations for potential battery investments to hybridize their generation facility. The tool uses deep learning to predict revenue over a broad search space of potential battery sizes, estimates capital and operating costs (including accounting for battery degradation), and computes financial performance of each potential battery system investment, recommending a system with maximum financial performance. The tool is tested and validated for hydropower assets. Finally, this tool will help a greater cross-section of industry consider investments in battery systems, increasing their revenue and helping them compete in rapidly evolving electrify markets.

Transient solution for megajoule energy release in a lumped-parameter series RLC circuit

A method is developed for optimizing the energy release from a megajoule capacitive discharge in a series RLC circuit with an RL load. Both the resistance and inductance of the load are represented by effective values that characterize their behavior during the discharge. Using Kirchhoff's laws, equations utilizing the load impedance and the external circuit impedance are derived for determining the instantaneous load voltage and energy characteristics. A program (ERES) computes and displays the load characteristics and the circuit current. Use of the ERES program allows a designer to perturbate values of the circuit elements in order to produce the desired time distribution for the load energy input.

The existing methods typically involve a quasi-steady state assumption to make this large-scale problem tractable. Here, we introduce an extension to this method that allows for adaptive coupling of degradation with the fast-timescale process based on a variety of error thresholds. This reduces the error accumulated during long-term optimization of the SOC under degradation and allows for decision making at multiple timescales. The results presented include long-term operating profiles of the SOC under degradation with both steady-state and fluctuating day to day operation.

Guaranteeing a Physically Realizable Battery Dispatch Without Charge-Discharge Complementarity Constraints

The non-convex complementarity constraints present a fundamental computational challenge in energy constrained optimization problems. In this work, we present a new, linear, and robust battery optimization formulation that sidesteps the need for battery complementarity constraints and integers and prove analytically that the formulation guarantees that all energy constraints are satisfied which ensures that the optimized battery dispatch is physically realizable. In addition, we bound the worst-case model mismatch and discuss conservativeness. In conclusion, simulation results further illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
