Federated Giovanni

Federated Giovanni is a NASA-funded ACCESS project to extend the scope of the GES DISC Giovanni online analysis tool to 4 other Distributed Active Archive Centers within EOSDIS: OBPG, LP-DAAC, MODAPS and PO.DAAC. As such, it represents a significant instance of sharing technology across the DAACs. We also touch on several sub-areas that are also sharable, such as Giovanni URLs, workflows and OGC-accessible services.

Analysis of a 7 year tropospheric ozone vertical distribution at the Observatoire de Haute Provence

A seven year (1984-90) climatology of tropospheric vertical ozone soundings, performed by electrochemical sondes at the OHP (44 deg N, 6 deg E, 700 m ASL) in Southern France, is presented. Its seasonal variation shows a broad spring/summer maximum in the troposphere. The contribution of photochemical ozone production and transport from the stratosphere to this seasonal variation are studied by a correlative analysis of ozone concentrations and meteorological variables, with emphasis on potential vorticity. This analysis shows the impact of dynamical and photochemical processes on the spatial and temporal ozone variability. In particular, a positive correlation (r = 04.0, significance greater than 99.9 percent) of ozone with potential vorticity is observed in the middle troposphere, reflecting the impact of stratosphere-troposphere exchange on the vertical ozone distribution.

The Spatial Extent and Distribution of Star Formation in 3D-HST Mergers at z is approximately 1.5

We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of star formation in a sample of 60 visually identified galaxy merger candidates at z greater than 1. Our sample, drawn from the 3D-HST survey, is flux-limited and was selected to have high star formation rates based on fits of their broad-band, low spatial resolution spectral energy distributions. It includes plausible pre-merger (close pairs) and post-merger (single objects with tidal features) systems, with total stellar masses and star formation rates derived from multi-wavelength photometry. Here we use near-infrared slitless spectra from 3D-HST which produce H or [OIII] emission line maps as proxies for star-formation maps. This provides a first comprehensive high-resolution, empirical picture of where star formation occurred in galaxy mergers at the epoch of peak cosmic star formation rate. We find that detectable star formation can occur in one or both galaxy centres, or in tidal tails. The most common case (58%) is that star formation is largely concentrated in a single, compact region, coincident with the centre of (one of) the merger components. No correlations between star formation morphology and redshift, total stellar mass, or star formation rate are found. A restricted set of hydrodynamical merger simulationsbetween similarly massive and gas-rich objects implies that star formation should be detectable in both merger components, when the gas fractions of the individual components are the same. This suggests that z is approximately 1.5 mergers typically occur between galaxies whose gas fractions, masses, andor star formation rates are distinctly different from one another.

The theoretical and experimental investigations on multiple pure tone noise.

An investigation on multiple pure tone (MPT) noise is described. The model fan is operated, in Freon 12, in a closed loop acoustical facility. It has been found experimentally that the rotor relative Mach number and incidence angle are parameters important to the evolution of the MPT sound and the inlet duct length has a significant influence on the MPT sound emission. The experimental results are compared with a previous analysis. From the known blade nonuniformities of the model fan, the MPT distributions are computed. The analysis correctly predicts the frequency of the dominant multiple pure tone and sound pressures of the blade passing frequency noise and the dominant MPT that are in the same range as the experimental values.

On the velocity dependence of the interstellar Na I/Ca II ratio

The correlation noted by Routly and Spitzer (1952) between the ratio of the column densities of interstellar Na I and Ca II and radial velocity in the spectra of 21 early-type stars is reinvestigated on the basis of more recent data for 64 stars. The original result is confirmed, and it is further demonstrated that the low values of Na I/Ca II are associated with large peculiar velocities relative to the local standard of rest. It is proposed that the bulk of the high-velocity components can be interpreted as old supernova remnants. A statistical analysis of the distribution with velocity of interstellar Ca II K lines observed by Adams (1949) in the directions of some 300 early-type stars is found to be consistent with this hypothesis.

Statistical analysis of information from long-range spacecraft

Results are presented of analysis of statistical characteristics of information from spacecraft data compression systems, ignoring the nature of channel activity. Analysis of the distribution of the number of active channels and the channel activities was performed using data from scientific experiments conducted on the Zond-1 and Venera-4 spacecraft.

The surface abundance and stratigraphy of lunar rocks from data about their albedo

The data pf ground-based studies and surveys of the lunar surface by the Zond and Apollo spacecraft have been used to construct an albedo map covering 80 percent of the lunar sphere. Statistical analysis of the distribution of areas with various albedos shows several types of lunar surface. Comparison of albedo data for maria and continental areas with the results of geochemical orbital surveys allows the identification of the types of surface with known types of lunar rock. The aluminum/silcon and magnesium/silicon ratios as measured by the geochemical experiments on the Apollo 15 and Apollo 16 spacecraft were used as an indication of the chemical composition of the rock. The relationship of the relative aluminum content to the age of crystalline rocks allows a direct dependence to be constructed between the mean albedo of areas and the age of the rocks of which they are composed.
