A new method for operating a continuous flow diffusion chamber to investigate immersion freezing: assessment and performance study

Glaciation in mixed-phase clouds predominately occurs through the immersion freezing mode where ice nucleating particles (INPs) immersed within supercooled droplets induce nucleation of ice. Currently, model representations of this process are a large source of uncertainty in simulating cloud radiative properties, and to constrain these estimates, continuous flow diffusion chamber (CFDC)-style INP devices are commonly used to assess the immersion freezing efficiencies of INPs. In this study, a new approach was explored to operating such an ice chamber that provides maximum activation of particles without droplet breakthrough and correction factor ambiguity to obtain high-quality INP measurements in a manner that has not been demonstrated as possible previously. The conditioning section of the chamber was maintained at ~ –20 °C and water relative humidity (RH w ) ~ 113 % conditions to maximize the droplet activation, and the droplets were supercooled with an independently temperature-controlled nucleation section at a steady cooling rate (0.5 °C min –1 ) to induce the freezing of droplets and evaporation of unfrozen droplets. The performance of the modified ice chamber was evaluated using four INP species: K-feldspar, illite-NX, Argentinian soil dust, and airborne arable dust that had shown ice nucleation over a wide span of supercooled temperatures. Dry dispersed and size-selected K-feldspar particles were generated in the laboratory. Illite-NX and soil dust particles were sampled during the second phase of the Fifth International Ice Nucleation Workshop (FIN-02) campaign, and airborne arable dust particles were sampled from the aerosol inlet located on the rooftop of the laboratory. The measured ice nucleation efficiencies of model aerosols with a surface active site density (n s ) metric were higher, but mostly agreed within one order of magnitude compared to literature results.

Adaptive continuity-preserving simplification of street networks

While street network data are nearly universally available, their representation is usually transportation-based. However, for many types of analyses, e.g., urban morphology or network science, unprocessed transportation-based street network data is unsuitable, making a cumbersome manual simplification process necessary. To address this challenge, in this paper we propose an algorithm for simplification of street networks, based on the detection of network portions that need to be simplified, and continuity-preserving heuristics that generate new geometries. The algorithm, released in the open-source Python package neatnet, facilitates the generation of morphological networks and generalises to various geographical contexts without a need to alter the parameters, while offering better performance than other available solutions.

Design of a Continuous Electrochemical Purification Reactor for Corrosion Mitigation in Molten Chloride Salt Systems

The utility of molten chloride salts in concentrating solar power (CSP) is dependent on the ability to maintain low corrosive impurities. Without proper purification, the corrosion rates of containment alloys exceed the industry standard of corrosion—under 20 μm/year. An extensive body of literature focuses on the initial purification stage of molten chloride salts. However, occurrences such as maintenance, leaks, and so forth expose the salt to the atmosphere and reintroduce impurities. Therefore, it is critical to develop a purification strategy that can control impurity levels during CSP plant operation. Here we present the design and fabrication of a purification vessel to continuously remove impurities out of flowing molten salt.

3D Continuous Forcing Dataset from 3D Constrained Variational Analysis at SGP

The continuous 3D large-scale forcing (VARANAL3D) data set derived from 3D constrained variational analysis (3DCVA) extends the conventional constrained variational analysis method by incorporating multiple sub-columns within the analysis domain. This advancement introduces spatial variability into the large-scale forcing fields, thereby enriching the data set’s applicability. The VARANAL3D data set spans from 2004 to 2018 and covers a region of 5˚×4.5˚ domain around the ARM SGP site. The analysis domain is divided into 10×9 sub-columns with 0.5˚ resolution. The 3D large-scale forcing data provides necessary variables to drive and evaluate single-column models (SCM), cloud-resolving models (CRM) ,and large-eddy simulations (LES), as well as information for testing model sensitivity to spatial variability of the large-scale forcing data, facilitating more rigorous testing and refinement of physical processes in SCM/CRM/LES.

Continuous Test and Transition Infrastructure for Quantum Networking for Science Complex

We propose a network architecture with a separate quantum dataplane and a conventional control plane: (a) Quantum Data Plane: The Quantum Data plane consists of links of dark fibers connecting quantum switches and repeaters, which in turn, connect to quantum computers, memory and sensors. Since the current reach is limited to local areas, it will begin as a collection of site networks at laboratories, (b) Conventional Control Plane: The Control plane provides management access to quantum devices for configuration and provisioning via control nodes with firewall and encryption capabilities. Continuous Test and Transition Infrastructure: We propose an infrastructure with a control plane connecting multiple sites via encrypted tunnels over conventional networks consisting of the following: (a) Site Quantum Networks: Individual site networks supported by their fiber plants connect laboratories that house and connect to their quantum devices for testing and interoperability.(b) Site Control Planes: Sites are connected over individual control planes with control hosts with Software Defined Networking capabilities, which can be peered with other networks via ESnet.(c) Progressive Expansion: Initially, sites will develop individual data planes with their specific quantum devices and fiber connections, and mechanisms to interface with conventional networks. They progressively expand and interconnect, under a wide-area ecosystem of peered control planes for device testing, interoperability development and roll off into production environments.

Continued Discussion of Failure Mode Modeling and Overall Component Reliability: Is the Data Missing or Censored?

This paper is a continuation of a paper presented at the 13th Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Conference, in which a discussion of modeling failure modes of complex components was presented; see Paulos and Smith (2016). The paper demonstrated how the typical method of treating failure modes as being exponential in nature may yield optimistic predictions when estimating how improvements to components will perform in the real world. Instead of relying on textbook methods, it is more accurate to model the failure modes as a race in time; unfortunately, this does not give a closed-form solution. This work uses a simulation to solve for the model of the world, and is compared to the standard methodology of treating the failure modes as exponential random failures. The standard method is shown to have optimistic predictions, which will lead to prediction errors when failure modes were removed or “fixed.” The failure mode methodology presented in the first paper treated the data as being censored when the test stopped. In this paper, we will compare the results from treating the data as both censored and missing, and comparisons will be shown showing which method is more accurate and under what conditions.

High efficiency continuous-flow production of radioisotopes

Methods and systems are provided for continuous-flow production of radioisotopes with high specific activity. Radioisotopes with high specific activity produced according to the methods described are also provided. The methods can include causing a liquid capture matrix to contact a target containing a target nuclide; irradiating the target with radiation, ionizing radiation, particles, or a combination thereof to produce the radionuclides that are ejected from the target and into the capture matrix; and causing the liquid capture matrix containing the radionuclides to flow from the target to recover the capture matrix containing the radionuclides with high specific activity. The methods are suitable for the production of a variety of radionuclides. For example, in some aspects the target nuclide is 237Np, and the radionuclide is 238Np that decays to produce 238Pu. In other aspects, the target nuclide is 98Mo, and the radionuclide is Mo that decays to produce 99mTc.

System and method for large-scale PCB production including continuous selective adhesion

A method for the large-scale production of PCBs including a continuous selective adhesion process for creating printed circuit traces providing input to a production line. A roll of printed circuit traces is produced using rolls of flexible substrate, conductive layer, and conductive layer support by applying adhesive between the rolls of flexible substrate and conductive layer, bringing the rolls together, transferring a circuit pattern onto the flexible substrate, curing the adhesive through non-opaque areas of the circuit pattern, and separating the non-bonded areas. The resulting printed circuit traces are applied from the roll to mounts, and circuit components are applied from a roll to the traces as the mounts move along the line. Additional rolls of printed circuit traces and circuit components may be incorporated, and multi-layer PCBs may be produced. As part of the production line, the finished PCBs may be applied to flat or contoured products.

Energy Efficient, Incrementally Scalable, Continuous Basalt Fiber Manufacturing Process (Final Technical Report)

This project focused on new materials, bushing materials, that had the ability to produce continuous basalt or glass fiber. The original scope of the project was designed to identify bushing materials and produce fiber, but that scope did change during the program. The team put significant work into bushing material development in the place of producing fiber. The final bushing materials had to be able to produce fiber and the final sets of the project saw single strands of fiber be produced. The final materials selected was a unique MMC bushing composition. Using advanced chemistry, the interface chemistry was tailored between metallic and ceramic powders. Powders and fibers were consolidated using cold isostatic pressing and electrified ceramic hot pressing to form a near net shape composite bushing.

Continuous variable quantum secret sharing

Continuous variable quantum secret sharing (CV-QSS) technologies are described that use laser sources and homodyne detectors. Here, a Gaussian-modulated coherent state (GMCS) prepared by one device passes through secure stations of other devices sequentially on its way to a trusted device, and each of the other devices coherently adds a locally prepared, independent GMCS to the group of propagating GMCSs. Finally, the trusted device measures both the amplitude and the phase quadratures of the received group of coherent GMCSs using double homodyne detectors. The trusted device suitably uses the measurement results to establish a secure key for encoding secret messages to be broadcast to the other devices. The devices cooperatively estimate, based on signals corresponding to their respective Gaussian modulations, the trusted device's secure key, so that the cooperative devices can decode the broadcast secret messages with the secure key.
