Large Atomic Natural Orbital Basis Sets for the First Transition Row Atoms

Large atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets are tabulated for the Sc to Cu. The primitive sets are taken from the large sets optimized by Partridge, namely (21s 13p 8d) for Sc and Ti and (20s 12p 9d) for V to Cu. These primitive sets are supplemented with three p, one d, six f, and four g functions. The ANO sets are derived from configuration interaction density matrices constructed as the average of the lowest states derived from the 3d(sup n)4s(sup 2) and 3d(sup n+1)4s(sup 1) occupations. For Ni, the 1S(3d(sup 10)) state is included in the averaging. The choice of basis sets for molecular calculations is discussed.

Accurate Energetics for the Unimolecular Decomposition of HN2

We report internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) calculations along the constrained energy minimum (CEM) path for the addition of H to N2 with both CC-pVQZ and augmented CC-pVQZ basis sets. The results agree to within 0.5 kcal/mol with the larger basis set results of Walch, which were used to calibrate the HN2 potential energy surface used by Koizumi, Schatz, and Walch in coupled channel calculations to determine the lifetimes for unimolecular decay of the lowest vibrational levels of HN2. These small changes in the potential energy surface should have no significant effect on the computed lifetimes.

Computed Minimum Energy Pathway for Isomerization in Ketene

A minimum energy pathway for interchange of the CH groups in ketene via a C2v structure has been obtained using complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods with a polarized valence double zeta basis set to define the reaction pathway followed by multi-reference internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) calculations with a [3s3p2d/3s2p] basis set to determine the energetics. Qualitatively, the C2v structure is found to be a shallow minimum on the potential energy surface separated from ketene by a small barrier (0.2 kcal/mol), a second minimum, and a larger barrier (3.0 kcal/mol). The minimum energy pathway leading from the C2v minimum to ketene starts by simultaneous rotation of the farther CH group out of the plane and away from the oxygen followed by increase of the CCO angle and subsequent 1,2-migration of the H of the nearer CH group toward the carbon of the farther CH group.

Theoretical Study of the Low-Lying States of MgN+2

The structure and binding energies of the low-lying states of MgN2+ have been computed at the multireference configuration interaction level of theory. The effect of Mg inner-shell correlation have been included using the core-polarization potential method. The charge-quadrupole interaction results in a linear 2Sigma+ ground state as expected. The excited states can arise from either the interaction of the 2-P state of Mg+ with N2 or from charge transfer states with Mg(sup 2+)N2- bonding character. The lowest lying excited state, 2-B2, is mixture of these two mechanisms, which results in a C2v, geometry with Mg atoms sitting at the N2 bond midpoint. The small barrier in the bending potential exists between this state and the 2-II State which is the lowest lying linear excited state.

A New Global Potential Energy Surface for the Hydroperoxyl Radical, HO2: Reaction Coefficients for H + O2 and Vibrational Splittings for H Atom Transfer

A new analytic global potential energy surface describing the hydroperoxyl radical system H((sup 2)S) + O2(X (sup 3)Sigma((sup -)(sub g))) (reversible reaction) HO2 ((X-tilde) (sup 2)A'') (reversible reaction) O((sup 3)P) + O H (X (sup 2)Pi) has been fitted using the ab initio complete active space SCF (self-consistent-field)/externally contracted configuration interaction (CASSCF/CCI) energy calculations of Walch and Duchovic. Results of quasiclassical trajectory studies to determine the rate coefficients of the forward and reverse reactions at combustion temperatures will be presented. In addition, vibrational energy levels were calculated using the quantum DVR-DGB (discrete variable representation-distributed Gaussian basis) method and the splitting due to H atom migration is investigated. The material of the proposed presentation was reviewed and the technical content will not reveal any information not already in the public domain and will not give any foreign industry or government a competitive advantage.

The Low-Lying Electronic States of LiB

The spectroscopic constants for the triplet and singlet states of LiB below about 30 000/ cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration interaction approach in conjunction with [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. The ground state is (sup 3)Pi as found in previous work. No excited triplet states are found to be ideal for characterizing the ground state; the (1)(sup 3)Sigma(sup -) state has a transition energy that is too small for many experimental approaches and the (2)(sup 3)Pi and (3)(sup 3)Pi states have bond lengths that are significantly longer than the ground state, resulting in transition intensities that are spread out over many vibrational levels of the ground state.

A Study of the X(sup 2) Sigma(sup +) and A(sup 2) Pi States of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +)

The ground (sup 2)Sigma(sup +) and lowest excited (sup 2)Pi states of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +) are studied using the singles and doubles configuration interaction (SDCI) approach, in conjunction with large basis sets. The effect of Mg core correlation and core polarization are accounted for using the core-polarization potential (CPP) approach. Franck-Condon factors, oscillator strengths, radiative lifetimes, dissociation energies, bond lengths, and excitation energies are reported. The computed results are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

The G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) Approach: A Modification of the G2(MP2) Approach and a Comparison with B3LYP Results

The quadratic configuration interaction calculation in the G2(MP2) approach is replaced by a coupled-cluster singles and doubles calculation including a perturbational estimate of the triples excitations. In addition, the SCF and MP2 geometry optimizations and SCF frequency calculation in the G2(MP2) approach are replaced by a B3LYP geometry optimization and frequency calculation in the proposed G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) approach. This simplification does not affect the average absolute deviation from experiment, but decreases the maximum error compared with the G2(MP2) approach. The G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) results are compared with those obtained using the B3LYP approach, and the G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) model is found to be more reliable, even if the B3LYP calculations are performed using a large basis set.

The Theoretical Transition Probabilities Between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(Sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) States of N2

The electronic transition moment functions between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) states of N2 are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (ICMRCI) method based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave-functions. The dependence of the moments on both the one and n-particle basis sets has been investigated in detail. The calculated radiative lifetimes for the vibrational levels of B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) are in excellent agreement with the most recent measurement of Euler and Pipkin (1983)

The Low-Lying Electronic States of YCu

The spectroscopic constants for the singlet and triplet states of YCu below about 15 000 per centimeter are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach. These calculations are calibrated by studies of fewer states using higher levels of correlation treatment and/or larger basis sets. The computed T(sub e) values and radiative lifetimes are in reasonable agreement with experiment. The calculations confirm the previous experimental assignment for all but one state, where theory helps resolve between two possible assignments.

The FEM-R-Matrix Approach: Use of Mixed Finite Element and Gaussian Basis Sets for Electron Molecule Collisions

For the calculation of electron molecule collision cross sections R-matrix methods automatically take advantage of the division of configuration space into an inner region (I) bounded by radius tau b, where the scattered electron is within the molecular charge cloud and the system is described by an correlated Configuration Interaction (CI) treatment in close analogy to bound state calculations, and an outer region (II) where the scattered electron moves in the long-range multipole potential of the target and efficient analytic methods can be used for solving the asymptotic Schroedinger equation plus boundary conditions.

On the Reaction of FNO2 with CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21

Theoretical studies are reported for the reaction of FN02 with the radicals CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21, which are templates for the radical site of a hydrogenated diamond surface. All structures axe fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) based on the B3LYP functional. Calibration calculations axe performed for CH3 + FNO2 using the coupled cluster approach, the the internally contracted multireference configuration. interaction method, and second order perturbation theory based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave function. These calibration calculations support the B3LYP approach for the calculation of bond energies, but show the B3LYP barrier is too low. Combining the calibration calculations with the larger clusters yields our best estimate of a barrier of about 10 kcal/mol. for the reaction of FNO2 with a radical site on hydrogenated diamond.

FEM R-Matrix Calculations of Electron-H2 Collisions

Electron-H2 Collisions have been studied using the finite-element R-matrix method. Our approach uses a mixed finite-element and Gaussian basis to describe the continuum electron. In the inner region, the multi-centered nature of the Gaussian basis provides an efficient representation in the regions of space near the nuclei, whereas the piecemeal and energy-independent nature of the FEM basis is particular well suited for R-matrix calculations. Fixed nuclei calculations have been carried out at 1.4 a(sub 0), the equilibrium internuclear distance of the ground state. Up to six target states are included: the X(sup 1)E+(sub g), b(sup 3)E+(sub u), a(sup 3)E+(sub g), B(sup 1)E+(sub u), c(sup 3)II(sub u), and C(sup 1)II(sub u) states, and configuration-interaction functions are used to describe the target states. The results will be compared with available theoretical and experimental data.

The low-lying electronic states of LiC

The spectroscopic constants for the doublet and quartet states of LiC below about 30,000/cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach in conjunction with a [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. All of the strongly bound states, X(sup 4)(SIGMA)(sup -),(1)(sup 2)(DELTA), (1)(sup 2)(SIGMA)(sup +), and (2)(sup 2) II, very ionic in character. The only bound-bound quartet transition in this energy range is (2)(sup 4)SIGMA(sup -) and Franck-Condon factors, Einstein A values, and lifetimes are reported for this transition.

Theoretical Studies of Possible Synthetic Routes for the High Energy Density Material Td N4: Excited Electronic States

Vertical electronic excitation energies for single states have been computed for the high energy density material (HEDM) Td N4 in order to assess possible synthetic routes that originate from excited electronic states of N2 molecules. Several ab initio theoretical approaches have been used, including complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), state averaged CASSCF (SA-CASSCF), singles configuration interaction (CIS), CIS with second-order and third-order correlation corrections [CIS(D)) and CIS(3)], and linear response singles and doubles coupled-cluster (LRCCSD), which is the highest level of theory employed. Standard double zeta polarized (DZP) and triple zeta double polarized (TZ2P) one-particle basis sets were used. The CASSCF calculations are found to overestimate the excitation energies, while the SA-CASSCF approach rectifies this error to some extent, but not completely. The accuracy of the CIS calculations varied depending on the particular state, while the CIS(D), CIS(3), and LRCCSD results are in generally good agreement. Based on the LRCCSD calculations, the lowest six excited singlet states are 9.35(l(sup)T1), 10.01(l(sup)T2), 10.04(1(sup)A2), 10.07(1(sup)E), 10.12(2(sup)T1), and 10.42(2(sup)T2) eV above the ground state, respectively. Comparison of these excited state energies with the energies of possible excited states of N2+N2 fragments, leads us to propose that the most likely synthetic route for Td N4 involving this mechanism arises from combination of two bound quintet states of N2.

Relativistic Radiative and Auger Rates for Fe XXIV

As part of a project to compute improved atomic data for the spectral modeling of iron K lines, we report extensive calculations and comparisons of radiative and Auger rates for transitions involving the K-vacancy states in Fe XXIV. By making use of several computational codes, a detailed study is carried out of orbital representation, configuration interaction, relativistic corrections, cancellation effects, and fine tuning. It is shown that a formal treatment of the Breit interaction is essential to render the important magnetic correlations that take part in the decay pathways of this ion. As a result, the accuracy of the present A-values is firmly ranked at better than 10% while that of the Auger rates at only 15%.

Mass Polarization Effect in He-like Systems

Eigenvalues for the ground state S and excited S and P states have been calculated for He-like systems, He, Li(+), Be(+2), and Ne(+8), using Hylleraas-type wave functions. These calculations have been carried out for a number of mass ratios R=mu/M=m(sub e)/(m(sub e)+M), where m(sub e) is the mass of the electron and M is the arbitrary mass of the nucleus. The eigenvalues are fitted to a 5th degree polynomial in R giving the mass polarization term (Delta (sub 1) x Delta (sub 2) and higher order corrections. The mass polarization term obtained from the fitting procedure agrees very well with the first-order result obtained directly. For example, in He we find E=E(sub 0)+Sigma(sup 5)(sub n=1)R(sup n)C(sub n), where E(sub 0)=-5.807448754 Ry and C(sub 1)=0.318138927 which agrees very well with the directly obtained first-order value 0.318138966083 and the result 0.318372 obtained by Yamanaka, using wave functions of the configuration-interaction form. We have carried out a similar calculation for the bound state of H(-).
