The effects of diffusion on population gratings and the stability of ring lasers

The effects of diffusion on the coupling between counterpropagating modes in a two-level medium are studied in the rate equation limit. It is shown that diffusion can greatly decrease saturation gratings in low-pressure gases. Among many other effects which rely on spatial hole burning, this can alter the stability of bidirectional solutions of the third-order Lamb equation model of a ring laser.

Recent data quality and earth science results from the Landsat thematic mapper

The results of the NASA Landsat Image Data Quality Analysis (LIDQA) program are reviewed. Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 TM data quality with regard to image geometry and radiometry are discussed. The results indicate that the TM provides excellent imagery that can be used in the form of satellite image maps meeting cartographic standards at scales of 1:100,000 or smaller. These data can be used to locate features or guide the revision or updating of maps for scales up to 1:24,000. The TM sensor is also providing data of good radiometric quality and stability, with radiometric uncertainties of 1 percent or smaller. The temperature dependence in the absolute radiometry is on the order of 1 to 5 percent of full scale. In terms of bidirectional reflectance estimated at the satellite, the error is estimated at under 6 percent and commonly 3 percent. Preliminary results also corroborate the utility of the TM data for geological or geographical studies.

Numerically stable algorithm for discrete-ordinate-method radiative transfer in multiple scattering and emitting layered media

The transfer of monochromatic radiation in a scattering, absorbing, and emitting plane-parallel medium with a specified bidirectional reflectivity at the lower boundary is considered. The equations and boundary conditions are summarized. The numerical implementation of the theory is discussed with attention given to the reliable and efficient computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Ways of avoiding fatal overflows and ill-conditioning in the matrix inversion needed to determine the integration constants are also presented.

Estimation of canopy parameters for inhomogeneous vegetation canopies from reflectance data. III - TRIM: A model for radiative transfer in heterogeneous three-dimensional canopies

A model for radiative transfer in heterogeneous three-dimensional canopies such as those found in forests is proposed. Its use in estimating important biophysical variables such as leaf area index and canopy architecture from bidirectional canopy reflectance data is discussed. The model and its use in estimating canopy parameters through its inversion are validated with measured canopy reflectance data for corn canopies.

Joule-Thomson Expander Without Check Valves

Cooling effected by bidirectional, reciprocating flow of gas. Type of Joule-Thomson (J-T) expander for cryogenic cooling requires no check valves to prevent reverse flow of coolant. More reliable than conventional J-T expander, containing network of check valves, each potential source of failure. Gas flows alternately from left to right and right to left. Heat load cooled by evaporation of liquid from left or right compartment, whichever at lower pressure.

Pulse-Population Modulation For Induction Machines

Low-frequency synthesizer developed to provide low-frequency waveform by synthesis from high-frequency power system. Waveform assembled by allowing conduction of discrete half cycles of high-frequency carrier. Frequency of synthesized wave controlled by pulse pattern. By controlling relationship between slip and stator frequencies, one operates induction motor either as motor or generator. Such bidirectional energy transducer used as starter/generator for engine, or as servo-mechanism for control of acceleration and deceleration. Other advantages include operation under controlled voltage-to-frequency ratios to maintain high-efficiency and high power factor, and no reflection of low-frequency noise into 20-kHz distribution bus.

Precision cleaning methods for spacecraft applications

A small CO2 snow cleaning apparatus to clean both molecular films and particles from small and large components and surfaces was constructed. Various types of surfaces were cleaned using the CO2 technique. Vacuum deposited and sputtered metallic coatings such as germanium, aluminum, and silver and silicon wafers, and polished copper conical mirrors were purposely contaminated with everyday aerospace contaminants, including particle fallout and fingerprints. Precleaning characterization by Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), ellipsometry, nonvolatile residue, and microscopic particle evaluation served as evaluation of cleaning efficiency. Good results were obtained in trial application.

Summary of along-track data from the earth radiation budget satellite for several representative ocean regions

For several days in January and August 1985, the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite, a component of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE), was operated in an along-track scanning mode. A survey of radiance measurements taken in this mode is given for five ocean regions: the north and south Atlantic, the Arabian Sea, the western Pacific north of the Equator, and part of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Each overflight contains information about the clear scene and three cloud categories: partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, and overcast. The data presented include the variation of longwave and shortwave radiance in each scene classification as a function of viewing zenity angle during each overflight of one of the five target regions. Several features of interest in the development of anisotropic models are evident, including the azimuthal dependence of shortwave radiance that is an essential feature of shortwave bidirectional models. The data also demonstrate that the scene classification algorithm employed by the ERBE results in scene classifications that are a function of viewing geometry.

Advanced Solidstate Array Spectroradiometer

During the Summer of 1987, the Advanced Solidstate Array Spectroradiometer (ASAS) was installed and flown on the NASA Ames C-130 in support of the First International Field Experiment (FIFE) missions. The study site was over the grassland areas of the Konza Prairie in Kansas. The data collected with ASAS during these flights has been used to produce the first nearly simultaneous multiangular/multispectral images of selected terrestrial study sites. This data will be valuable in the study of surface bidirectional reflectance and albedo. The data will also be useful for the development of data analysis algorithms for future spaceborne instruments such as the Goddard MODIS-T and JPL's HIRIS. The flight data acquired is further analyzed.

Parabola directional field radiometer for aiding in space sensor data interpretations

A unique field radiometer, called the Parabola, was developed to accurately measure the multidirectional incoming and outgoing spectral radiances for a variety of earth surface types; these range from rangeland vegetation to ice and snow. It is found that bidirectional reflectance characteristics are not constant for a given type of vegetation. There can be substantial changes in the anisotropic expression with changes in the solar zenith angle and vegetation conditions.

Stress and free vibration analyses of multilayered composite plates

This paper presents a two-phase computational procedure for the accurate prediction of vibration frequencies, stresses, and deformations in simply supported bidirectional multilayered composite plates. The range of applicability of this procedure in terms of the plate's parameters is determined, and the potential of the proposed procedure for use in conjunction with large-scale finite element modeling of composite structures is discussed. It is shown that the use of the shear correction factors calculated by this procedure extends the range of the validity of the first-order shear deformation theory, used in the first phase of the procedure, to fairly thick multilayered plates with the h/L1 ratio of the order of 0.3.

Triggered lightning strikes to aircraft and natural intracloud discharges

The physical model of Mazur (1989) for triggering lightning strikes by aircraft was used to interpret the initiation of intracloud flashes observed by the French UHF-VHF interferometric system. It is shown that both the intracloud discharges and airplane-triggered lightning strikes were initiated by simultaneous bidirectional development of the negative stepped leader and the positive leader-continous current process. However, the negative stepped leader phase in triggered flashes is of shorter duration (tens of milliseconds), than that in intracloud flashes (usually hundreds of milliseconds). This is considered to be due to the fact that, on the aircraft there is a single initiation process, versus the numerous initiation processes that occur inside the cloud.

Investigation of scene identification algorithms for radiation budget measurements

The computation of earth radiation budget from satellite measurements requires the identification of the scene in order to select spectral factors and bidirectional models. A scene identification procedure is developed for AVHRR SW and LW data by using two radiative transfer models. These AVHRR GAC pixels are then attached to corresponding ERBE pixels and the results are sorted into scene identification probability matrices. These scene intercomparisons show that there generally is a higher tendency for underestimation of cloudiness over ocean at high cloud amounts, e.g., mostly cloudy instead of overcast, partly cloudy instead of mostly cloudy, for the ERBE relative to the AVHRR results. Reasons for this are explained. Preliminary estimates of the errors of exitances due to scene misidentification demonstrates the high dependency on the probability matrices. While the longwave error can generally be neglected the shortwave deviations have reached maximum values of more than 12 percent of the respective exitances.

The reflectance of Ames 24E, Infrablack, and Martin black

Results are reported from measurements of the specular reflectances (SRs) and bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) of three black optical coatings in the FIR wavelength range. The nonspecular reflectometer apparatus described by Smith (1984) is employed, and the data are presented in tables and graphs and discussed in detail. It is found that Ames 24E has an FIR SR one order of magnitude lower than that of Martin black (MB), with BRDF values characteristic of a nearly Lambertian surface, while Infrablack has SR two orders lower than MB and a specular-diffuse surface; MB itself has a very specular surface.

Intercomparison and interpretation of satellite-derived directional albedos over deserts

Issues related to the dependence of planetary albedo upon solar zenith angle are studied using Nimbus-7, GOES, and Meteosat data over deserts. Geographical variations of the planetary albedo are isolated from the albedo's solar zenith angle dependence. An atmospheric solar radiation model is coupled with desert surface bidirectional reflectance measurements to test the consistency of satellite-derived directional planetary albedos. Consideration is given to the use of narrowband versus broadband instruments, the impact of desert aerosols on the directional planetary albedo, and potential differences in the directional planetary albedo associated with different types of deserts. The results show that the directional planetary albedo is dominated by the directional surface albedo, although surface brightness influences the atmospheric limb brightening and limb darkening processes.

An algorithm for computing the distance spectrum of trellis codes

A class of quasiregular codes is defined for which the distance spectrum can be calculated from the codeword corresponding to the all-zero information sequence. Convolutional codes and regular codes are both quasiregular, as well as most of the best known trellis codes. An algorithm to compute the distance spectrum of linear, regular, and quasiregular trellis codes is presented. In particular, it can calculate the weight spectrum of convolutional (linear trellis) codes and the distance spectrum of most of the best known trellis codes. The codes do not have to be linear or regular, and the signals do not have to be used with equal probabilities. The algorithm is derived from a bidirectional stack algorithm, although it could also be based on the Viterbi algorithm. The algorithm is used to calculate the beginning of the distance spectrum of some of the best known trellis codes and to compute tight estimates on the first-event-error probability and on the bit-error probability.

Interpretation of surface and planetary directional albedos for vegetated regions

An atmospheric solar radiation model has been coupled with surface reflectance measurements for two vegetation types, pasture land and savannah, in order to address several issues associated with understanding the directional planetary albedo; i.e., the dependence of planetary albedo upon solar zenith angle. These include an elucidation of processes that influence the variation of planetary albedo with solar zenith angle, as well as emphasizing potential problems associated with converting narrowband planetary albedo measurements to broadband quantities. It is suggested that, for vegetated surfaces, this latter task could be somewhat formidable, since the model simulations indicate that narrowband to broadband conversions strongly depend upon vegetation type. A further aspect of this paper is to illustrate a procedure by which reciprocity inconsistencies within a bidirectional reflectance dataset, if they are not too severe, can be circumvented.
