Lewis Acidity of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil System

Abstract While SbCl 3 is typically inert toward oxidation by ortho ‐quinones, we use o ‐chloranil to show that the outcome of such reactions may be altered by the presence of a donor such as triphenylphosphine oxide, which readily traps the SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon (cat Cl = tetrachlorocatecholate) in the form of the corresponding adduct Ph 3 PO→SbCl 3 (cat Cl ). The same reaction in the presence of a chloride salt affords the corresponding antimonate anion [Cl 4 Sb(cat Cl )] − . Computational studies indicate that the putative SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon has a higher chloride ion affinity than SbCl 5 , suggesting significant Lewis acidity. This property is further demonstrated by the use of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil system for both THF polymerization and a Friedel–Crafts‐type alkylation of benzene using 1‐fluorooctane. Finally, the reaction of E ‐stilbene with o ‐chloranil in the presence of SbCl 3 affords the corresponding benzodioxene, suggesting that SbCl 3 may also operate as a redox‐active catalyst.

Computational Identification and Experimental Demonstration of High‐Performance Methane Sorbents

Abstract Remarkable methane uptake is demonstrated experimentally in three metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) identified by computational screening: UTSA‐76, UMCM‐152 and DUT‐23‐Cu. These MOFs outperform the benchmark sorbent, HKUST‐1, both volumetrically and gravimetrically, under a pressure swing of 80 to 5 bar at 298 K. Although high uptake at elevated pressure is critical for achieving this performance, a low density of high‐affinity sites (coordinatively unsaturated metal centers) also contributes to a more complete release of stored gas at low pressure. The identification of these MOFs facilitates the efficient storage of natural gas via adsorption and provides further evidence of the utility of computational screening in identifying overlooked sorbents.

Formation of a Strong Heterogeneous Aluminum Lewis Acid on Silica

Abstract Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) reacts with silanols present on partially dehydroxylated silica to form well‐defined ≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (O(Si≡) 2 ) ( 1 ). 27 Al NMR and DFT calculations with a small cluster model to approximate the silica surface show that the aluminum in 1 adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry by coordinating to a nearby siloxane bridge and a fluorine from the alkoxide. Fluoride ion affinity (FIA) calculations follow experimental trends and show that 1 is a stronger Lewis acid than B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) but is weaker than Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) and i Pr 3 Si + . Cp 2 Zr(CH 3 ) 2 reacts with 1 to form [Cp 2 ZrCH 3 ][≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (CH 3 )] ( 3 ) by methide abstraction. This reactivity pattern is similar to reactions of organometallics with the proposed strong Lewis acid sites present on Al 2 O 3 .

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen-Bond Effects of Second-Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. In this work, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO 2 RR and enables the disentangling of second-sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe-ortho-im(H), which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen-bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO 2 binding affinity by 25-fold and CO 2 RR activity by 2000-fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin (Fe-TPP). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through-space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO 2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

f‐ block MOFs: A Pathway to Heterometallic Transuranics

Abstract A novel series of heterometallic f ‐block‐frameworks including the first examples of transuranic heterometallic 238 U/ 239 Pu‐metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and a novel monometallic 239 Pu‐analog are reported. In combination with theoretical calculations, we probed the kinetics and thermodynamics of heterometallic actinide(An)‐MOF formation and reported the first value of a U‐to‐Th transmetallation rate. We concluded that formation of uranyl species could be a driving force for solid‐state metathesis. Density of states near the Fermi edge, enthalpy of formation, band gap, proton affinity, and thermal/chemical stability were probed as a function of metal ratios. Furthermore, we achieved 97 % of the theoretical maximum capacity for An‐integration. These studies shed light on fundamental aspects of actinide chemistry and also foreshadow avenues for the development of emerging classes of An‐containing materials, including radioisotope thermoelectric generators or metalloradiopharmaceuticals.

Cobalt‐Doped Bismuth Nanosheet Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to Electrolyte‐Free Formic Acid

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to valuable liquid fuels, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO − ) is a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Enhancing CO 2 RR activity while retaining high selectivity is critical for commercialization. To address this, we developed metal-doped bismuth (Bi) nanosheets via a facile hydrolysis method. These doped nanosheets efficiently generated high-purity HCOOH using a porous solid electrolyte (PSE) layer. Among the evaluated metal-doped Bi catalysts, Co-doped Bi demonstrated improved CO 2 RR performance compared to pristine Bi, achieving ~90 % HCOO − selectivity and boosted activity with a low overpotential of ~1.0 V at a current density of 200 mA cm −2 . In a solid electrolyte reactor, Co-doped Bi maintained HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of ~72 % after a 100-hour operation under a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , generating 0.1 M HCOOH at 3.2 V. Density functional theory (DFT) results revealed that Co-doped Bi required a lower applied potential for HCOOH generation from CO 2 , due to stronger binding energy to the key intermediates OCHO* compared to pure Bi. In conclusion, this study shows that metal doping in Bi nanosheets modifies the chemical composition, element distribution, and morphology, improving CO 2 RR catalytic activity performance by tuning surface adsorption affinity and reactivity.

Fluorophilic Sigma(σ)‐Lock Self‐Healable Copolymers

Although F-Containing molecules and macromolecules are often used in molecular biology to increase the binding with Lewis acidic groups by introducing favorable C−F dipoles, there is virtually no experimental evidence and limited understanding of the nature of these interactions, especially their role in synthetic polymeric materials. These studies elucidate the molecular origin of inter- and intra-Chain interactions responsible for self-healing of F-Containing copolymers composed of pentafluorostyrene and n-butyl acrylate units (p(PFS/nBA). Guided by dynamic surface oscillating force (SOF) and spectroscopic measurements supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, these studies show that the reformation of σ-σ orbitals in −C−F of PFS and CH 3 CH 2 − of nBA units enables the recovery of entropic energy via fluorophilic-σ-lock van der Waals forces when PFS/nBA molar ratios are ~50/50. The strength of these interactions determined experimentally for self-healable PFS/nBA compositions is in the order ~0.3 kcal/mol which primarily comes from fluorophilic-σ-lock (~70 %) contributions. These interactions are significantly diminished for non-self-healable counterparts. Strongly polarized −C−F σ orbitals create lateral dipolar forces enhancing the affinity towards −C−H orbitals, facilitating energetically favorable interactions. Entropic recovery driven by non-Covalent bonding offers a valuable tool in designing materials with unique functionalities, particularly self-healable batteries and energy storage devices.

A Thorough Characterization of the Tellurocyanate Anion

Tellurocyanate, [TeCN] − , is the heaviest group 16 congener of the cyanate anion, [OCN] − . Due to the relative instability of the C─Te bond, tellurocyanate chemistry has seen only scarce attention. Here, we present the facile synthesis and thorough characterization of [K@crypt-222][TeCN]. The anion is essentially linear with interatomic distances C─N = 1.150(6)Å and C─Te = 2.051(4)Å, thus approximating a C≡N triple bond and for C─Te a bond order between 1 and 2. Fully 13 C and 15 N labeled [Te 13 C 15 N] − allowed for the extraction of chemical shifts and all possible coupling constants ( 13 C = 77.8 ppm, 15 N = 285.7 ppm, 125 Te = −566 ppm, 1 J 13C-15N = 8 Hz, 1 J 13C-125Te = 748 Hz, 2 J1 5N-125Te = 55 Hz), which were also determined independently by quantum chemical calculations. In the series [ChCN] − (Ch = O─Te), [TeCN] − shows the strongest spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced heavy-atom effect on the light-atom shielding (SO-HALA-effect). In contrast, 15 N shifts are also well described without considering relativistic effects and/or SOC. Negative-ion photoelectron spectroscopy was used to extract the electron affinity (EA = 3.034 eV) and spin-orbit splitting (3807 cm −1 ) of [TeCN] • . These values continue the trends of falling EA and rising SOC in the series [ChCN] • .

Polymer grafted aramid nanofiber reinforces immiscible waste polypropylene/poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) are plastics commonly used for packaging because of their excellent barrier and mechanical properties. The properties of these plastics are often diminished after mechanical recycling, inevitably causing down-cycling. Furthermore, this problem is exacerbated when different kinds of polymers mix. Aramid nanofibers have the potential to improve the mechanical properties of polymers due to their excellent mechanical properties but their poor dispersion in polymers is a challenge. Grafting polymers onto nanofibers can help address this challenge. In this work, different loading levels (1%, 2%, and 5%) of polymer grafted aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are blended with waste PP/PET (90/10), simulating a PP waste stream containing traces of PET contaminants. Scanning electronic microscopy, rheology, and differential scanning calorimetry results show the affinity of PP functionalized aramid nanofibers (PP_ANF) towards the PP matrix. At 1 wt% of the nanofiber, the size of the PET droplets in the PP matrix of the PP_ANF blend range from 0.2 to 2.0 μm while that of unmodified ANF and PET_ANF blends are in the range of 0.1–6.2 and 0.5–7.4 μm, respectively. In summary, polymer grafted ANFs have the tendency of improving properties of its like polymers due to similarity in the grafting polymer and the polymer matrix.

Genetically Encoded Crosslinking Enables Identification of Multivalent Ubiquitin‐Deubiquitylating Enzyme Interactions

Abstract Ubiquitin (Ub) proteoforms control nearly every aspect of eukaryotic cell biology through their diversity. Inspired by the widely used Ub C‐terminal electrophiles (Ub−E), here we report the identification of multivalent binding of Ub with deubiquitylating enzymes (Dubs) using genetic code expansion (GCE) and crosslinking mass spectrometry. While the Ub−Es only gather structural information with the S1 Dub sites, we demonstrate that GCE of Ub with p‐benzoyl‐L‐phenylalanine enables identification of interaction modes beyond the S1 site with a panel of Dubs of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic origin. Collectively, this represents the next generation of Ub‐based affinity probes with a unique ability to unravel Ub interaction landscapes beyond what is afforded by cysteine‐based chemistries.

In-situ IR Spectroscopy Study of Reactions of C3 Oxygenates on Heteroatom (Sn, Mo, and W) doped BEA Zeolites and the Effect of Co-adsorbed Water

The reactions of acetone and hydroxyacetone over heteroatom doped BEA zeolites (Sn, Mo, and W) in the presence and absence of H 2 O vapor are investigated using infrared spectroscopy. Acetone is converted to mesityl oxide over Sn-BEA exclusively. At higher temperatures, larger oxygenates such as phorones, aromatics, and coke form. The presence of co-adsorbed water in Sn-BEA suppresses tautomerization. H 2 O vapor is also beneficial for minimizing coke formation at high temperatures. Hydroxyacetone is converted into 2-hydroxypropanal over Sn-BEA, exhibiting high affinity to Sn sites up to 400 °C. Sn-BEA catalyzes conversion of hydroxyacetone into the enol in the absence of H 2 O, but exposure to H 2 O induces the formation of 2-hydroxypropanal and subsequent conversion to acrolein. Furthermore, the Lewis acid descriptors are used to rationalize the reaction pathways. For the isomerization of hydroxyacetone into 2-hydroxypropanal, the hardness of acid sites influences the reaction and correlates with the overall Lewis acidity of the catalysts, respectively. However, the size of the exchanged metal significantly affects aldol condensation, where keto and enol forms of acetone adsorb to active sites simultaneously.

Influence of the Anions on the Interaction Energy between Water and Ionic Liquids

It is essential to understand the interaction energy between water and ionic liquids (ILs) in search of ILs for dehumidification applications. In this paper, the intermolecular interaction energy between water and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([EMIM])-based ILs was investigated. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data were first measured for solutions of [EMIM][BF 4 ], [EMIM][N(CN) 2 ], [EMIM][CF 3 SO 3 ], and [EMIM][CH 3 SO 3 ] with water molar fractions of 8–95 % at temperatures of 303–343 K. The IL-IL and water-IL intermolecular interaction energies were determined by using the correlated non-random two-liquid model. The results revealed that fluorine atoms in anions reduce the attraction energy between IL and water, and thus, decrease the water affinity.

Boosting the Oxygen Reduction Performance via Tuning the Synergy between Metal Core and Oxide Shell of Metal−Organic Frameworks‐Derived Co@CoO x

Abstract Co core@Co oxide shell (Co@CoO x ) catalysts represent a large family with promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity. However, inadequate understanding of Co@CoO x synergy prohibits further pursuit of catalytic performance enhancement. Herein, a Co zeolitic−imidazolate framework was converted into metallic Co, followed by controlled air treatment to form Co@CoO x . The composition and structure evolution as a function of air treatment temperature were studied thoroughly through conventional and synchrotron (both ex‐situ and in‐situ) characterizations, confirming the coexistence of CoO and Co 3 O 4 in the shell. The optimal catalyst showed an ORR half‐wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in an alkaline half‐cell and delivered high discharge capacity in an aprotic Li−O 2 battery (7,124 mAh g Cat+C −1 ) and an aqueous Zn−air battery (694 mAh g Zn −1 ) with good performance retention after durability test. Modeling simulation and density functional theory calculation confirmed the charge donation from metal core to oxide shell and shed light on new insights of how metal@metal oxide synergy impacted the ORR via tuning the charge conductivity, oxygen affinity and intermediate transfer pathway. This work opens up a venue to boost ORR catalytic activity from an interfacial synergy perspective.

Burning magnesium in carbon dioxide for highly effective phosphate removal

Magnesium oxide was found to have high-phosphate-affinity as an effective component to enhance the phosphate removal ability of common adsorbent materials. However, the currently prepared MgO-based hybrid adsorbents by conventional methods still suffer from the limited low loading of MgO and inferior removal performances, much far away from practical application. In this study, an ingenious carbon coated MgO nanocomposite is designed by directly burning magnesium in CO 2 , a well-known textbook reaction. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope and aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscope demonstrate the sample is well prepared. Consequently, the high content of nanosized MgO combined with defect-rich carbon layer brings unprecedented phosphate removal capacity of 1135.0 mg/g, removal rate of 99% and benign compatibility with coexisting anions and solution pH. Furthermore, the removal mechanism is also investigated in detail by characterizing the sample before and after adsorption.

High-fidelity Recognition of Organotrifluoroborate Anions (R-BF 3 - ) as Designer Guest Molecules

The recognition of boron compounds is well developed as boronic acids but untapped as organotrifluoroborate anions (R-BF 3 - ). Here, we are exploring the development of these and other designer anions as anion-recognition motifs by considering them as substituted versions of the parent inorganic ion. To this end, we demonstrate strong and reliable binding of organic trifluoroborates, R-BF 3 - , by cyanostar macrocycles that are size-complementary to the inorganic BF 4 - progenitors. We find that recognition is modulated by the substituent's sterics and that the affinities are retained using the common K + salts of R-BF 3 - anions.
