Reduction in redundancy of multichannel telemetric information by the method of adaptive discretization with associative sorting

The method of adaptive discretization is the most promising for elimination of redundancy from telemetry messages characterized by signal shape. Adaptive discretization with associative sorting was considered as a way to avoid the shortcomings of adaptive discretization with buffer smoothing and adaptive discretization with logical switching in on-board information compression devices (OICD) in spacecraft. Mathematical investigations of OICD are presented.

Adaptive processing for LANDSAT data

Analytical and test results on the use of adaptive processing on LANDSAT data are presented. The Kalman filter was used as a framework to contain different adapting techniques. When LANDSAT MSS data were used all of the modifications made to the Kalman filter performed the functions for which they were designed. It was found that adaptive processing could provide compensation for incorrect signature means, within limits. However, if the data were such that poor classification accuracy would be obtained when the correct means were used, then adaptive processing would not improve the accuracy and might well lower it even further.

Adaptive spacecraft attitude control utilizing eigenaxis rotations

Conventional and adaptive attitude control of spacecraft which use control moment gyros (CMG's) as torque sources are discussed. Control laws predicated on the assumption of a linear system are used since the spacecraft equations of motion are formulated in an 'eigenaxis system' so that they are essentially linear during 'slow' maneuvers even if large angles are involved. The overall control schemes are 'optimal' in several senses. Eigenaxis rotations and a weighted pseudo-inverse CMG steering law are used and, in the adaptive case, a Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) controller based on Liapunov's Second Method is adopted. To substantiate the theory, digital simulation results obtained using physical parameters of a Large Space Telescope type spacecraft are presented. These results indicate that an adaptive control law is often desirable.

Digital adaptive control laws for the F-8

NASA is conducting a flight control research program in digital fly-by-wire technology using a modified F-8C aircraft. The first phase of this program used Apollo hardware to demonstrate the practicality of digital fly-by-wire in an actual test vehicle. For the second phase, conventional aircraft sensors and a large floating point digital computer are being utilized to test advanced control laws and redundancy concepts. As part of NASA's research in digital fly-by-wire technology, Honeywell developed digital adaptive flight control laws for flight test in the F-8C. Adaptation of the control laws was to be based on information sensed from conventional aircraft sensors excluding air data. The control laws were constrained to use only existing elevator, rudder, and ailerons as control effectors, each powered by existing actuators. Three adaptive control laws were successfully designed using maximum likelihood estimation, a Liapunov stable model tracker and a self-excited limit cycle concept. The maximum likelihood estimation design was selected as the most promising because of its capability to identify more than surface effectiveness parameters. The adaptive concepts, the control laws and comparisons of predicted performance are described.

Adaptation to delayed auditory feedback

Delayed auditory feedback disrupts the production of speech, causing an increase in speech duration as well as many articulatory errors. To determine whether prolonged exposure to delayed auditory feedback (DAF) leads to adaptive compensations in speech production, 10 subjects were exposed in separate experimental sessions to both incremental and constant-delay exposure conditions. Significant adaptation occurred for syntactically structured stimuli in the form of increased speaking rates. After DAF was removed, aftereffects were apparent for all stimulus types in terms of increased speech rates. A carry-over effect from the first to the second experimental session was evident as long as 29 days after the first session. The use of strategies to overcome DAF and the differences between adaptation to DAF and adaptation to visual rearrangement are discussed.

Incremental exposure facilitates adaptation to sensory rearrangement

Visual-target pointing experiments were performed on 24 adult volunteers in order to compare the relative effectiveness of incremental (stepwise) and single-step exposure conditions on adaptation to visual rearrangement. The differences between the preexposure and postexposure scores served as an index of the adaptation elicited during the exposure period. It is found that both single-step and stepwise exposure to visual rearrangement elicit compensatory changes in sensorimotor coordination. However, stepwise exposure, when compared to single-step exposur in terms of the average magnitude of visual displacement over the exposure period, clearly enhances the rate of adaptation. It seems possible that the enhancement of adaptation to unusual patterns of sensory stimulation produced by incremental exposure reflects a general principle of sensorimotor function.

Identification and dual adaptive control of a turbojet engine

The objective of this paper is to utilize the design methods of modern control theory to realize a dual-adaptive feedback control unit for a highly nonlinear single spool airbreathing turbojet engine. Using a very detailed and accurate simulation of the nonlinear engine as the data source, linear operating point models of unspecified dimension are identified. Feedback control laws are designed at each operating point for a prespecified set of sampling rates using sampled-data output regulator theory. The control system sampling rate is determined by an adaptive sampling algorithm in correspondence with turbojet engine performance. The result is a dual-adaptive control law that is functionally dependent upon the sampling rate selected and environmental operating conditions. Simulation transients demonstrate the utility of the dual-adaptive design to improve on-board computer utilization while maintaining acceptable levels of engine performance.

Adaptive coding of MSS imagery

A number of adaptive data compression techniques are considered for reducing the bandwidth of multispectral data. They include adaptive transform coding, adaptive DPCM, adaptive cluster coding, and a hybrid method. The techniques are simulated and their performance in compressing the bandwidth of Landsat multispectral images is evaluated and compared using signal-to-noise ratio and classification consistency as fidelity criteria.

The dual momentum control device for large space systems - An example of distributed system adaptive control

One area in which large space systems require new technology is attitude control. The paper presents an adaptive control philosophy applicable to the control of distributed systems. An adaptive control system is described for stabilization of the flexible modes of a spinning ring. The system consists of a modal decomposition and identification subsystem, a gain adjustment subsystem, and a feedback control subsystem. Simulations are presented illustrating the adaptive capability of the system. The adaptive controller did produce stable results by quickly identifying the parameter differences and adjusting the feedback controller gains.

Digital adaptive controllers for VTOL vehicles. Volume 1: Concept evaluation

A digital self-adaptive flight control system was developed for flight test in the VTOL approach and landing technology (VALT) research aircraft (a modified CH-47 helicopter). The control laws accept commands from an automatic on-board guidance system. The primary objective of the control laws is to provide good command-following with a minimum cross-axis response. Three attitudes and vertical velocity are separately commanded. Adaptation of the control laws is based on information from rate and attitude gyros and a vertical velocity measurement. The final design resulted from a comparison of two different adaptive concepts--one based on explicit parameter estimates from a real-time maximum-likelihood estimation algorithm, the other based on an implicit model reference adaptive system. The two designs were compared on the basis of performance and complexity.

A mechanical adapter for installing mission equipment on large space structures

A mechanical attachment adapter was designed, constructed, and tested. The adapter was was included in a simulation program that investigated techniques for assembling erectable structures under simulated zero-g conditions by pressure-suited subjects in a simulated EVA mode. The adapter was utilized as an interface attachment between a simulated equipment module and one node point of a tetrahedral structural cell. The mating performance of the adapter, a self-energized mechanism, was easily and quickly demonstrated and required little effort on the part of the test subjects.

Problems in the application of multivariable adaptive control to flexible spacecraft

The present investigation is concerned with the application of adaptive control to distributed parameter systems (DPS) which arise in the modeling of large space structures (LSS). Distributed parameter and multivariable models for LSS are introduced and the decoupled adaptive control of such models is considered. Possibilities to achieve adaptive control in connection with a more general model are also examined. It is found that, in concept, adaptive control appears to be a natural choice for solving attitude and shape perturbation problems in LSS. However, due to the distributed parameter nature of such structures and the current lack of experience in their control, the problem must be phrased in general terms which are very difficult to deal with. In particular, detailed a priori plant knowledge is currently required so that decoupling and/or reduced order models of sufficient accuracy can be provided.

Motion sickness - Acquisition and retention of adaptation effects compared in three motion environments

The acquisition and retention of adaptation effects in motion sickness was invetigated using a sudden-stop vestibulovisual interaction test for measuring susceptibility to motion sickness (Graybiel and Lackner, 1980). The test procedure included four successive assessments that provide not only an index of susceptibility to motion sickness but also the rates of acquisition and decay of adaptation effects. The 14 subjects who had participated in this test had previously served as subjects in parabolic flight experiments and seven of them had also taken part in the assessment of antimotion-sickness remedies in a slow rotation room. A study was conducted to determine whether these subjects' rates of acquisition and decay of adaptation to stressful motion represent consistent general features of their response across motion environments. It is found that an individual's rates of acquiring and losing adaptation are quite consistent in very different situations. In addition, the pattern of results indicate modifications of the sudden-stop vestibulovisual test that should increase its effectiveness as a motion-sickness screening procedure, both for orbital flight and for terrestrial conditions.

Some critical questions about deterministic and stochastic adaptive control algorithms

The purpose of this informal paper is to discuss certain robustness issues associated with existing adaptive control algorithms. A modeling framework for incorporating high-frequency unknown dynamics in the adaptive control framework is suggested. Possible fundamental limitations of existing adaptive control framework is suggested. Possible fundamental limitations of existing adaptive control algorithms are also discussed, with emphasis upon their closed-loop stability properties in the presence of unmodeled high-frequency dynamics.

Parameter testing for lattice filter based adaptive modal control systems

For Large Space Structures (LSS), an adaptive control system is highly desirable. The present investigation is concerned with an 'indirect' adaptive control scheme wherein the system order, mode shapes, and modal amplitudes are estimated on-line using an identification scheme based on recursive, least-squares, lattice filters. Using the identified model parameters, a modal control law based on a pole-placement scheme with the objective of vibration suppression is employed. A method is presented for closed loop adaptive control of a flexible free-free beam. The adaptive control scheme consists of a two stage identification scheme working in series and a modal pole placement control scheme. The main conclusion from the current study is that the identified parameters cannot be directly used for controller design purposes.

Adaptive grid relocation algorithms for transonic full potential calculations using one-dimensional or two-dimensional diffusion equation

The effect of solution-adaptive grids using an interpolative grid relocation algorithm on two-dimensional transonic full potential flow calculations is studied with extensions to three dimensions in mind. One-dimensional or two-dimensional diffusion equation is solved to obtain the grid density control function for generating adaptive grids. The results of flow solution for NACA-0012 and Gates-Leajet airfoils show a significant improvement of accuracy in the CP distributions. However, further studies are recommended on the questions (1) what information from the initial flow solution should be passed on to the solution-adaptive grid generation scheme, and (2) how to optimize the accuracy of the solution through the use of adaptive grids.

Suppression of Biodynamic Interference by Adaptive Filtering

Preliminary experimental results obtained in moving base simulator tests are presented. Both for pursuit and compensatory tracking tasks, a strong deterioration in tracking performance due to biodynamic interference is found. The use of adaptive filtering is shown to substantially alleviate these effects, resulting in a markedly improved tracking performance and reduction in task difficulty. The effect of simulator motion and of adaptive filtering on human operator describing functions is investigated. Adaptive filtering is found to substantially increase pilot gain and cross-over frequency, implying a more tight tracking behavior. The adaptive filter is found to be effective in particular for high-gain proportional dynamics, low display forcing function power and for pursuit tracking task configurations.

Formulation and implementation of nonstationary adaptive estimation algorithm with applications to air-data reconstruction

The dynamics model and data sources used to perform air-data reconstruction are discussed, as well as the Kalman filter. The need for adaptive determination of the noise statistics of the process is indicated. The filter innovations are presented as a means of developing the adaptive criterion, which is based on the true mean and covariance of the filter innovations. A method for the numerical approximation of the mean and covariance of the filter innovations is presented. The algorithm as developed is applied to air-data reconstruction for the space shuttle, and data obtained from the third landing are presented. To verify the performance of the adaptive algorithm, the reconstruction is also performed using a constant covariance Kalman filter. The results of the reconstructions are compared, and the adaptive algorithm exhibits better performance.
