Luna 16 - Some Li, K, Rb, Sr, Ba, rare-earth, Zr, and Hf concentrations.

Concentrations of Li, K, Rb, Sr, Na, rare-earths, Zr and Hf have been determined for some Luna 16 core materials by mass-spectrometric isotope-dilution. Two regolith fines samples from different depths in the core, and four rock-chips, including both igneous rocks and breccias, have similar trace-element concentrations. The Luna 16 materials have general lunar trace-element characteristics but differ from other returned lunar samples in a manner that suggests the presence of excess feldspar. Unless the Luna 16 igneous rocks are fused soils, they appear to represent either partial plagioclase cumulates or the least differentiated igneous material yet returned from the moon. The similarity in trace-element concentrations of the igneous rocks and the fines would then suggest largely local derivation of the Luna 16 regolith.

Study of a splat cooled Cu-Zr-noncrystalline phase.

By rapid quenching from the melt, using the splat forming gun technique, a noncrystalline phase has been obtained in a Cu-Zr alloy containing 60 at. % Cu. Upon heating, rapid crystallization of the samples takes place at 477 C with a heat release of about 700 cal per mol. The variation of the electrical resistivity of the samples with temperature confirms the transformation. Very high resolution electron microscopy studies of the structural changes of the samples upon heating are presented and show the gradual crystallization of the amorphous structure.

Role of Hf and Zr in the hydrogen embrittlement of Ta and Cb alloys

Investigation of the hydrogen embrittlement of aged Ta alloy T-111 (Ta-8W-2Hf) and similar Ta and Cb alloys. It is found that aging ternary Ta alloys such as T-111 near 1040 C for 1000 hr or longer increases their sensitivity to low-temperature hydrogen embrittlement. Segregation of Hf to grain boundaries during aging causes embrittlement upon testing at -196 C and is responsible for the observed hydrogen embrittlement. Binary Ta and Cb alloys, Ta-2Hf and Cb-1Zr, are not susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement under the conditions of this study and did not exhibit grain boundary segregation of Hf or Zr. Ternary alloys Ta-8W-.5Hf, Ta-8W-1Hf, and Ta-4W-2Hf are superior to T-111 for containment of alkali metals in that they do not exhibit aging embrittlement. However, these alloys in the aged condition are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.

Studies of hydride formation and superconductivity in hydrides of alloys Th-M /M = La, Y, Ce, Zr and Bi/

In order to gain a better insight into both the unusual composition of ThH15 and its superconductivity, an experimental study was conducted to assess the influence of partial replacement of Th in Th4H15 by elements which allow for a systematic alteration of spatial and electronic effects. For this purpose, substituent elements with the same number of valence electrons (4) but of smaller size (Zr) as well as elements with a smaller number of valence electrons (3) and either larger (La) or smaller size (Y) were selected. A few data with Ce and Bi as substituent atoms are also included. The matrix alloys for hydriding were obtained by induction melting under Ar in water-cooled Cu boats. Superconducting transition temperatures are found to decrease on substitution for Th in Th4H15. Hydrides derived from LaH3 by substitution for La by Th do not become superconducting. It is suggested that superconductivity in Th4H15 is connected with a deviation from the exact stoichiometry of Th4H15. A model of unsatisfied valencies may be of more general validity in predicting superconductivity.

Zr and Nb partition coefficients - Implications for the genesis of mare basalts, KREEP, and sea floor basalts

The distribution coefficients of Zr and Nb have been found between armalcolite, ilmenite, clinopyroxene, rutile, plagioclase, and a coexisting high-Ti mare basalt melt in the 1105-1128 C temperature range. Henry's Law is not broken over the compositional range evaluated. The distribution coefficients of clinopyroxene are strongly dependent on melt and crystal compositions. The Al2O3 activity in the melt is a strong controlling parameter. It is concluded that: (1) Apollo 11 (low K) and Apollo 17 high-Ti mare basalts may have been generated by the partial melting of an ilmenite-rich cumulate, (2) Apollo 11 (high K) basalts may have been generated by a small amount of partial melting of a more fractionated ilmenite-rich cumulate, (3) KREEP magmas may have been formed as residual melts produced by fractional crystallization of the lunar magma ocean, and (4) anomalous (type II) MOR basalts may have been generated by small degrees of partial melting of a relatively undepleted mantle with clinopyroxene remaining in the residium.

The transient oxidation of single crystal NiAl+Zr

The 800 C oxidation of oriented single crystals of Zr doped beta-NiAl was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The oxide phases and metal-oxide orientation relationships were determined to characterize the transient stages of oxidation prior to the transformation to or formation of alpha-Al2O3. On (001) and (012) metal orientations, NiAl2O4 was the first oxide to form followed by delta-Al2O3 which becomes the predominant oxide phase. All oxides were highly epitaxially related to the metal; the orientation relationships being function of parallel cation close-packed directions in the meta and oxide. On (011) and (111) metal orientations, gamma-Al2O3 became the predominant oxide phase rather than delta-Al2O3, indicating a structural stability from the highly epitaxial oxides. The relative concentration of aluminum in the oxide scales increased with time indicating preferential gamma-or delta-Al2O3 growth. The striking feature common to the orientation relationships is the alignment of 100 m and 110 ox directions, believed to result from the minimal 3 percent mismatch between the corresponding (100)m and (110)ox planes.

Zr-Hf-Ta fractionation during lunar evolution

Zr/Hf ratios and other elemental data in 68 samples of various mare basalts, KREEP units, and lunar glasses have been determined using instrumental neutron activation analysis coupled with coincidence-anticoincidence counting for greater precision. The data are presented in order to quantify further the amount of Zr/Hf fractionation that has occurred during primordial crystallization and cumulate remelting or by any other process. Models of Zr-Hf evolution are developed to place additional constraints on the bulk lunar composition and on the effects of minor phases that may be responsible for the observed fractionations. The Hf-Ta fractionation in lunar compositions is also reviewed in order to characterize normal Hf(4+) versus Ta(4+) behavior and to delineate possible effects due to the oxidation of Ta(4+) to Ta(5+) during late-stage ilmenite crystallization.

Transitions of the type 2s-2p in oxygenlike Y, Zr, and Nb

Transitions of the type 2s-2p in the oxygenlike ions Y XXXII, Zr XXXIII, and Nb XXXIV were identified in spectra recorded at the University of Rochester's Omega laser facility. Solid targets were spherically irradiated by 24 beams of frequency-tripled (351-nm) Nd-glass laser radiation. The spectra were photographed with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. The identified transitions of the oxygenlike ions are in the range 30 to 73 A. The wavelengths for the magnetic-dipole transitions within the 2s2p4 ground configurations of these ions are predicted from the experimental energy levels.

2s2 2p5-2s2p6 transitions in fluorinelike ions from Zr(31+) to Sn(41+)

Transitions of the type 2s2 2p5-2s2p6 have been observed in eight fluorinelike ions from Zr(31+) to Sn(41+). The spectra were produced by focusing light from the Nd:glass Omega laser at the University of Rochester onto solid targets and photographing the resultant plasmas with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. The identified transitions are in the region 24-60 A. The measured wavelengths are in good agreement with wavelengths calculated with the semiempirical formulas of Edlen (1983). Wavelengths for the 2s2 2p5 2P3/2-2P1/2 magnetic-dipole transitions are given for each ion.

Diffusional transport during the cyclic oxidation of gamma + beta, Ni-Cr-Al(Y, Zr) alloys

The cyclic oxidation behavior of several cast gamma + beta, Ni-Cr-Al(Y, Zr) alloys and one low-pressure plasma spraying gamma + beta, Ni-Co-Cr-Al(Y) alloy was studied. Cyclic oxidation was found to result in a decreasing Al concentration at the oxide-metal interface due to a high rate of Al consumption coupled with oxide scale cracking and spalling. Diffusion paths plotted on the ternary phase diagram showed higher Ni concentrations with increasing cyclic oxidation exposures. The alloy with the highest rate of Al consumption and the highest Al content underwent breakaway oxidation following 500 1-hr cycles at 1200 C.

Laboratory produced P/M aluminum 2XXX + Zr sheet

A laboratory-scale batch of aluminum alloy sheeting samples in the 2XXX + Zr system has been produced by P/M techniques in the T8X temper and subjected to tensile and Kahn tear property tests in both the longitudinal and long-transverse directions. The results obtained were compared to those of a NASA study concerning the same alloy powders; it appears that laboratory production-scale sheet-sample properties are good to excellent predictors of pilot-scale process products' tensile and tear notch toughness properties. The tear resistance toughness of the laboratory samples was not predictive of the pilot-scale products, however.

Effect of the theta-alpha-Al2O3 transformation on the oxidation behavior of beta-NiAl+Zr

Isothermal oxidation of NiAl+Zr has been performed over the temperature range of 800-1200 C and studied by TGA, XRD, and SEM. A discontinuous decrease in growth rate of two orders of magnitude was observed at 1000 C due to the formation of alpha-Al2O3 from theta-Al2O3. This transformation also resulted in a dramatic change in the surface morphology of the scales, as a whisker topography was changed into a weblike network of oxide ridges and radial transformation cracks. It is believed that the ridges are evidence for a short-circuit outward aluminum diffusion growth mechanism that has been documented in a number of O-18 tracer studies.

Effect of a prior stretch on the aging response of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg-Zr alloy

The effect of a prior stretching of an aluminum alloy Al-5.3Cu-1.4Li-0.4Ag-0.4Mg-0.17Zr (in wt pct) on the microstructure that develops during aging of this alloy was investigated by comparing TEM and SAD observations and hardness curves with results for the unstretched alloy. The results suggest that stretching introduces a significant number of dislocations which may act as vacanacy sinks by sweeping vacancies away and thereby decreasing the vacancy concentration available for influencing the natural aging response. In the stretched and near-peak aged condition, a fine homogeneous distribution of T1, theta-prime, and S-prime phases were observed in an alpha solid solution matrix. Upon overaging, virtually all of the theta-prime and most of the S-prime phases were found to dissolve, leaving behind a microstructure of T1 precipitates.

Microstructure-mechanical property relationships for Al-Cu-Li-Zr alloys with minor additions of cadmium, indium or tin

Minor amounts of cadmium, indium or tin were added to a baseline alloy with the nominal composition of Al-2.4Cu-2.4Li-0.15Zr. These elements were added in an attempt to increase the age-hardening response of the material such that high strengths could be achieved through heat-treatment alone, without the need for intermediate mechanical working. The alloy variant containing indium achieved a higher peak hardness in comparison to the other alloy variations, including the baseline material, when aged at temperatures ranging from 160 C to 190 C. Tensile tests on specimens peak-aged at 160 indicated the yield strength of the indium-bearing alloy increased by approximately 15 percent compared to that of the peak-aged baseline alloy. In addition, the yield strength obtained in the indium-bearing alloy was comparable to that reported for similar baseline material subjected to a 6 percent stretch prior to peak-aging at 190 C. The higher strength levels obtaied for the indium-bearing alloy are attributed to increased number densities and homogeneity of both the T1 and theta-prime phases, as determined by TEM studies.

Effect of a prior stretch on the aging response of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg-Zr alloy

Recently, a family of Al-Cu-Li alloys containing minor amounts of Ag, Mg, and Zr and having desirable combinations of strength and toughness were developed. The Weldalite (trademark) alloys exhibit a unique characteristic in that with or without a prior stretch, they obtain significant strength-ductility combinations upon natural and artificial aging. The ultra-high strength (approximately 690 MPa yield strength) in the peak-aged tempers (T6 and T8) were primarily attributed to the extremely fine T(sub 1) (Al2CuLi) or T(sub 1)-type precipitates that occur in these alloys during artificial aging, whereas the significant natural aging response observed is attributed to strengthening from delta prime (Al3Li) and GP zones. In recent work, the aging behavior of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy without a prior stretch was followed microstructurally from the T4 to the T6 condition. Commercial extrusions, rolled plates, and sheets of Al-Cu-Li alloys are typically subjected to a stretching operation before artificial aging to straighten the extrusions and, more importantly, introduce dislocations to simulate precipitation of strengthening phases such as T(sub 1) by providing relatively low-energy nucleation sites. The goals of this study are to examine the microstructure that evolves during aging of an alloy that was stretch after solution treatment and to compare the observations with those for the unstretched alloy.

The effect of zinc additions on the environmental stability of Alloy 8090 (Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr)

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) remains a problem in both Al-Li and conventional Al heat treatable alloys. It has recently been found that relatively small additions (less than or approximately 1 wt-percent) of Zn can dramatically improve the SCC performance of alloy 8090 (Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr). Constant load time to failure experiments using cylindrical tensile samples loaded between 30 and 85 percent of TYS indicate improvements of orders of magnitude over the baseline 8090 for the Zn-containing alloys under certain aging conditions. However, the toughnesses of the alloys were noticeably degraded due to the formation of second phase particles which primarily reside on grain and subgrain boundaries. EDS revealed that these intermetallic particles were Cu and Zn rich. The particles were present in the T3 condition and were not found to be the result of quench rate, though their size and distribution were. At 5 hours at 160 C, the alloys displayed the greatest susceptibility to SCC but by 20 hours at 160 C the alloys demonstrated markedly improved TTF lifetimes. Aging past this time did not provide separable TTF results, however, the alloy toughnesses continued to worsen. Initial examination of the alloys microstructures at 5 and 20 hours indicated some changes most notably the S' and delta' distributions. A possible model by which this may occur will be explored. Polarization experiments indicated a change in the trend of E(sub BR) and passive current density at peak aging as compared to the baseline 8090. Initial pitting experiments indicated that the primary pitting mechanism in chloride environments is one occurring at constituent (Al-Fe-Cu) particles and that the Cu and Zn rich boundary precipitates posses a breakaway potential similar to that of the matrix acting neither anodic or cathodic in the first set of aerated 3.5 w/o NaCl experiments. Future work will focus on the identification of the second phase particles, evaluation of K(sub 1SCC) and plateau da/dt via both DCB and slow strain rate techniques. A lower Zn content variant will be examined in the near future in hopes of optimizing toughness, density and SCC performance.

Fracture resistance and fatigue crack growth characteristics of two Al-Cu-Mg-Zr alloys

The dependence of strength, fracture resistance, and fatigue crack growth rate on the aging conditions of two alloy compositions based on Al-3.7Cu-1.85Mg-0.2Mn is investigated. Mechanical properties were evaluated in two heat treatment conditions and in two orientations (longitudinal and transverse). Compact tension specimens were used to determine fatigue crack growth characteristics and fracture resistance. The aging response was monitored on coupons using hardness measurements determined with a standard Rockwell hardness tester. Fracture resistance is found to increase with increasing yield strength during artificial aging of age-hardenable 2124-Zr alloys processed by powder metallurgy techniques. Fatigue crack growth rate increases with increasing strength. It is argued that these changes are related to deformation modes of the alloys; a homogeneous deformation mode tends to increase fracture resistance and to decrease the resistance to the fatigue crack propagation rate.
