Mass spectrometric investigations into 3D printed parts to assess radiopurity as ultralow background materials for rare event physics detectors

The mass concentrations of 232 Th and 238 U in several 3D printing filaments and printed polymer parts are reported as measures of their radiopurity. In order to minimize background signals in rare event physics detectors, radiopure polymers are necessary as dielectric and structural materials in their construction. New data are reported for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and two forms of polyetherimide (PEI, branded ULTEM 1010 and 9085). Data for starting filaments and both simple and complex printed parts are reported. PVDF filaments and simple printed beads, were found to have values of approximately 30 and 50 pg g -1 for 232 Th and 238 U, respectively, while a more complex spring clip part had slightly elevated 232 Th levels of 65 pg g -1 , with 238 U remaining at 50 pg g -1 . PPS filament was found to have concentrations of 270 and 710 pg g -1 for 232 Th and 238 U, respectively, and were not chosen to be printed as those levels were already higher than other material options. ULTEM 1010 filaments and printed complex spring clip parts were found to have concentrations of around 5 and 7 pg g -1 for 232 Th and 238 U, respectively, illustrating no significant contamination from the printing process. ULTEM 9085 filaments were found to have concentrations of around 9 and 5 pg g -1 for 232 Th and 238 U, respectively, while the printed complex spring clip part was found to have slightly elevated concentrations of 25 and 7 pg g -1 for 232 Th and 238 U, respectively. All these results were obtained using a novel dry ashing method in crucibles constructed of ultralow background electroformed copper or, when applicable, microwave assisted wet ashing digestion. Samples and process blanks were spiked with 229 Th and 233 U as internal standards prior to dry/wet ashing and determinations were made by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In order to maintain high radiopurity levels, pre-cleaning the filaments before printing and post-cleaning the parts is recommended, although the printing process itself has shown to contribute very minute amounts of radiocontaminants.

Structural transformation of metal oxo species within UiO-66 type metal–organic frameworks

Studying the coordination of actinide-based metal oxo clusters can provide valuable insights for nuclear energy technologies and radioactive waste containment. Metal–organic frameworks serve as a platform to directly interrogate the structure and properties of understudied actinide elements, including thorium. Examples of structural evolutions within Th oxo species within MOFs are rare yet relevant for nuclear waste speciation in solution. Herein, we report the serendipitous discovery of the structural evolution of Th-UiO-66 containing a hexanuclear Th node to a mononuclear Th(bdc) 2 (dmf) 2 upon the evaporation of solvent from the reaction. We observe a partial reversal of Th(bdc) 2 (dmf) 2 back to Th-UiO-66 upon hydrothermal treatment, indicating the complex dynamics of Th oxo species in solution. As a result, we report that isolated Ce-UiO-66 similarly transforms to a newly isolated 1D Ce III carboxylate chain MOF named NU-351 under the same conditions as Th-UiO-66, while Zr-UiO-66 and Hf-UiO-66 retain their structures.

Revisiting the Interpretation of Thorium Abundances at Hansteen Alpha

Hansteen Alpha is one of the few remaining locations on the Moon thought to be formed by highlands volcanism. Hansteen Alpha is a triangular shaped feature located in the southern portion of Oceanus Procellarum (12 degrees W, 50 degrees S) and its size is approximately 25 km on each side. As described by Hawke et al., there is clear evidence that: 1) Hansteen Alpha was emplaced by extrusive volcanic processes; and 2) it was formed by a viscous lava that should be enriched in Th. However, in the study of Hawke et al. using available Lunar Prospector (LP) Th data, it was concluded that the Hansteen Alpha region was not greatly enriched in Th as would be expected for a highly evolved, viscous lava. It was further concluded based on other compositional data that the magma that formed Hansteen Alpha did not correspond to any known rock type. Here we revisit the interpretation of Th abundances at Hansteen Alpha for a couple of reasons. First, the size of Hansteen Alpha is smaller than the spatial resolution of the LP Gamma-ray Spectrometer (LP-GRS) from which the Th abundances were derived. Therefore, the LP-GRS pixels covering Hansteen Alpha may not truly represent the Th abundance of the Hansteen Alpha feature. Second, recent work has led to a much greater understanding of the Th spatial distribution for small-area features on the lunar surface. In particular, using forward modeling techniques, we have developed the ability to obtain information about Th abundances for features that are at or smaller than the FWHM spatial resolution (approximately [80 square kilometers]) of the LP-GRS data.

Synthesis of Parent Acetylide and Dicarbide Complexes of Thorium and Uranium and an Examination of Their Electronic Structures

The reaction of [AnCl(NR 2 ) 3 ] (An = U or Th; R = SiMe 3 ) with NaCCH and tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) results in the formation of [An(C≡CH)(NR 2 ) 3 ] (1, An = U; 2, An = Th), which can be isolated in good yields after workup. Similarly, the reaction of 3 equiv of NaCCH and TMEDA with [AnCl(NR 2 ) 3 ] results in the formation of [Na(TMEDA)][An(C≡CH) 2 (NR 2 ) 3 ] (4, An = U; 5, An = Th), which can be isolated in fair yields after workup. The reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of KC 8 and 1 equiv of 2.2.2-cryptand in tetrahydrofuran results in formation of the uranium(III) acetylide complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(C≡CH)(NR 2 ) 3 ] (3). Thermolysis of 1 or 2 results in formation of the bimetallic dicarbide complexes [{An(NR 2 ) 3 } 2 (μ,η 1 :η 1 -C 2 )] (6, An = U; 7, An = Th), whereas the reaction of 1 with [Th{N(R)(SiMe 2 CH 2 )}(NR 2 ) 2 ] results in the formation of [U(NR 2 ) 3 (μ,η 1 :η 1 -C 2 )Th(NR 2 ) 3 ] (8). The 13 C NMR chemical shifts of the α-acetylide carbon atoms in 2, 5, and 7 exhibit a characteristic spin–orbit-induced downfield shift, due to participation of the 5f orbitals in the Th–C bonds. Furthermore, magnetism measurements demonstrate that 6 displays weak ferromagnetic coupling between the uranium(IV) centers (J = 1.78 cm –1 ).
