Tuning In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy and Interfacial Exchange Coupling in Epitaxial La 2/3 Sr 1/3 CoO 3 /La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 Heterostructures

Controlling the in-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy and interfacial exchange coupling between ferromagnetic (FM) layers plays a key role in next-generation spintronic and magnetic memory devices. In this work, we explored the effect of tuning the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of La 2/3 Sr 1/3 CoO 3 (LSCO) and La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 (LSMO) layers and the corresponding effect on interfacial exchange coupling by adjusting the thickness of the LSCO layer (t LSCO ). The epitaxial LSCO/LSMO bilayers were grown on (110) o -oriented NdGaO 3 (NGO) substrates with a fixed LSMO (top layer) thickness of 6 nm and LSCO (bottom layer) thicknesses varying from 1 to 10 nm. Despite the small difference (~0.2%) in lattice mismatch between the two in-plane directions, [001] o and [11̅0] o , a pronounced in-plane magnetic anisotropy was observed. Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism hysteresis loops revealed that for t LSCO ≤ 4 nm, the easy axes for both LSCO and LSMO layers were along the [001] o direction, and the LSCO layer was characterized by magnetically active Co 2+ ions that strongly coupled to the LSMO layer. No exchange bias effect was observed in the hysteresis loops. In contrast, along the [11̅0] o direction, the LSCO and LSMO layers displayed a small difference in their coercivity values, and a small exchange bias shift was observed. As t LSCO increased above 4 nm, the easy axis for the LSCO layer remained along the [100] o direction, but it gradually rotated to the [11̅0] o direction for the LSMO layer, resulting in a large negative exchange bias shift. Therefore, we provide a way to control the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and exchange bias by tuning the interfacial exchange coupling between the two FM layers.

Unique structural solution from a V H 3-30 antibody targeting the hemagglutinin stem of influenza A viruses

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) targeting conserved influenza A virus (IAV) hemagglutinin (HA) epitopes can provide valuable information for accelerating universal vaccine designs. Here, we report structural details for heterosubtypic recognition of HA from circulating and emerging IAVs by the human antibody 3I14. Somatic hypermutations play a critical role in shaping the HCDR3, which alone and uniquely among V H 3-30 derived antibodies, forms contacts with five sub-pockets within the HA-stem hydrophobic groove. 3I14 light-chain interactions are also key for binding HA and contribute a large buried surface area spanning two HA protomers. Comparison of 3I14 to bnAbs from several defined classes provide insights to the bias selection of V H 3-30 antibodies and reveals that 3I14 represents a novel structural solution within the V H 3-30 repertoire. The structures reported here improve our understanding of cross-group heterosubtypic binding activity, providing the basis for advancing immunogen designs aimed at eliciting a broadly protective response to IAV.

Electron pairing and nematicity in LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 nanostructures

Strongly correlated electronic systems exhibit a wealth of unconventional behavior stemming from strong electron-electron interactions. The LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 (LAO/STO) heterostructure supports rich and varied low-temperature transport characteristics including low-density superconductivity, and electron pairing without superconductivity for which the microscopic origins is still not understood. LAO/STO also exhibits inexplicable signatures of electronic nematicity via nonlinear and anomalous Hall effects. Nanoscale control over the conductivity of the LAO/STO interface enables mesoscopic experiments that can probe these effects and address their microscopic origins. Here we report a direct correlation between electron pairing without superconductivity, anomalous Hall effect and electronic nematicity in quasi-1D ballistic nanoscale LAO/STO Hall crosses. The characteristic magnetic field at which the Hall coefficient changes directly coincides with the depairing of non-superconducting pairs showing a strong correlation between the two distinct phenomena. Angle-dependent Hall measurements further reveal an onset of electronic nematicity that again coincides with the electron pairing transition, unveiling a rotational symmetry breaking due to the transition from paired to unpaired phases at the interface. The results presented here highlights the influence of preformed electron pairs on the transport properties of LAO/STO and provide evidence of the elusive pairing “glue” that gives rise to electron pairing in SrTiO 3 -based systems.

Spontaneously formed phonon frequency combs in van der Waals solid CrGeTe 3 and CrSiTe 3

Optical phonon engineering through nonlinear effects has been utilized in ultrafast control of material properties. However, nonlinear optical phonons typically exhibit rapid decay due to strong mode-mode couplings, limiting their effectiveness in temperature or frequency sensitive applications. Here we report the observation of long-lived nonlinear optical phonons through the spontaneous formation of phonon frequency combs in the van der Waals material CrXTe 3 (X=Ge, Si) using high-resolution Raman scattering. Unlike conventional optical phonons, the highest A g mode in CrGeTe 3 splits into equidistant, sharp peaks forming a frequency comb that persists for hundreds of oscillations and survives up to 200K. These modes correspond to localized oscillations of Ge 2 Te 6 clusters, isolated from Cr hexagons, behaving as independent quantum oscillators. Introducing a cubic nonlinear term to the harmonic oscillator model, we simulate the phonon time evolution and successfully replicate the observed comb structure. Similar frequency comb behavior is observed in CrSiTe 3 , demonstrating the generalizability of this phenomenon. Our findings demonstrate that Raman scattering effectively probes high-frequency nonlinear phonon modes, offering insight into the generation of long-lived, tunable phonon frequency combs with potential applications in ultrafast material control and phonon-based technologies.

Additive-assisted synthesis and optoelectronic properties of (CH 3 NH 3 ) 4 Bi 6 I 22

Hybrid organic-inorganic halides containing Bi and Sb generally exhibit higher stability and lower toxicity compared to Pb analogues. Here, in this work, synthesis, crystal and electronic structures and optical properties of a brand-new methylammonium bismuth iodide, (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 (MA + = CH 3 NH 3 + ), are reported. Interestingly, we find that the presence of the HgI2 is necessary for the targeted preparation of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 . (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 contains isolated [Bi 6 I 22 ] 4- clusters made of six edge-sharing octahedral BiI6 units, which are separated by MA + cations in its 0D crystal structure. A relatively low optical band gap of 1.9 eV was estimated for (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 based on diffuse reflectance measurements. An intense photoluminescence peak emerges at 636 nm at low temperatures that supports the assigned band gap value. Electronic structure calculations show the presence of flat bands in the valence and conduction bands, consistent with the low-dimensional structure of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 , and slightly indirect nature of the bandgap. Our findings suggest that the use of facilitator moieties such as HgI 2 may provide a pathway to obtaining alternative methylammonium bismuth iodides to (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 .

Large magnetic anisotropy of a decorated spin-chain system K 2 Co 3 (MoO 4 ) 3 (OH) 2

The magnetic structure of K 2 Co 3 (MoO 4 ) 3 (OH) 2 is studied in detail. The material has a half-sawtooth one-dimensional (1-D) structure containing two unique Co 2+ ions, one in the chain backbone and one on the apex of the sawtooth creating a series of isosceles triangles along the b-axis. These triangles can be a source of magnetic frustration. The ability to grow large single crystals enables detailed magnetic measurements with the crystals oriented in a magnetic field along the respective axes. It has a Curie–Weiss temperature θ CW of 5.3(2) K with an effective magnetic moment of 4.8(3)μ B /Co. The material is highly anisotropic with a sharp antiferromagnetic ordering transition at 7 K with a metamagnetic transition at 2 kOe. Neutron diffraction was used to determine the magnetic structure and revealed a magnetic structure with canted spins along the backbone of the chain while spins along the sawtooth caps maintained a colinear orientation, arranging antiferromagnetically relative to the backbone spins. In conclusion, the parallel chains arrange antiferromagnetically relative to each other along the c-axis and ferromagnetically along the a-axis.

From the laboratory to space: unveiling isomeric diversity of C 5 H 2 in the reaction of tricarbon (C 3 , X 1 Σ g + ) with the vinyl radical (C 2 H 3 , X 2 A′)

By connecting laboratory dynamics with cosmic observables, this work highlights the critical role of reactions between highly reactive species in shaping the molecular inventory of the interstellar medium and opens new windows into the spectroscopically elusive corners of astrochemical complexity. The gas phase formation of distinct C 5 H 2 isomers is explored through the bimolecular reaction of tricarbon (C 3 , X 1 Σ + g ) with the vinyl radical (C 2 H 3 , X 2 A′) at a collision energy of 44 ± 1 kJ mol −1 employing the crossed molecular beam technique augmented by electronic structure and Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) calculations. This barrierless and exoergic reaction follows indirect dynamics and is initiated by the addition of tricarbon to the radical center of the vinyl radical forming a Cs symmetric doublet collisional complex (CCCCHCH 2 ). Subsequent low-barrier isomerization steps culminate in the resonantly stabilized 2,4-pentadiynyl-1 radical (CHCCCCH 2 ), which decomposes via atomic hydrogen loss. Statistical calculations identify linear, triplet pentadiynylidene (p2, X 3 Σ − g ) as the dominant product, while singlet carbenes ethynylcyclopropenylidene (p1, X 1 A′), pentatetraenylidene (p3, X 1 A 1 ), and ethynylpropadienylidene (p4, X 1 A′) are formed with lower branching ratios. The least stable isomer, 2-cyclopropen-1-ylidenethenylidene (‘eiffelene’; p5, X 1 A 1 ), remains thermodynamically feasible, but exhibits negligible branching ratios. Two isomers detected in TMC-1 to date (p1 and p3) possess significant dipole moments making them amenable to radio telescopic observations, whereas linear pentadiynylidene (p2; D ∞h ) is only traceable via infrared spectroscopy or through its cyanopentadiynylidene derivative (HCCCCCCN). This study highlights the isomer diversity accessed in the low temperature hydrocarbon chemistry of barrierless and exoergic bimolecular reactions involving two unstable, reactants in cold molecular clouds.

Interface-driven magnetic anisotropy in relaxed La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 heterostructures on MgO

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) heterostructures grown on (001)-oriented MgO by molecular beam epitaxy. Due to the large film-substrate lattice mismatch, strain relaxation is found to occur within the first 2–3 unit cells (uc) of the film as evidenced by reflection high energy electron diffraction and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray reciprocal space mapping. Furthermore, we find that the presence of the LSCO spacer and capping layers leads to ferromagnetism in ultra-thin LSMO layers with thicknesses of the order of 2 uc with the magnetic easy axis oriented in the film plane. Net magnetic moments of 1.4 and 2.4 μ B /Mn are measured for (2 uc LSCO/2 uc LSMO) and (2 uc LSCO/4 uc LSMO) superlattices, respectively, by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The effective magnetic anisotropy of the relaxed (2 uc LSCO/4 uc LSMO) heterostructure is found to be an order of magnitude higher than bulk LSMO highlighting the critical role of interfacial interactions in tuning magnetic anisotropy at complex oxide interfaces.

A reactive flow model for the 3,3'-diamino-4,4'-azoxyfurazan based plastic bonded explosive (PBX 9701)

Here, this paper describes the calibration of the Arrhenius Wescott–Stewart–Davis (AWSD) reactive flow model for the recently developed high explosive PBX 9701, which consists of 97% 3,3'-diamino-4,4'-azoxyfurazan (DAAF) and 3% FK-800 binder by weight. DAAF-based explosive formulations have several desirable qualities as they are relatively insensitive to non-shock insults but have higher performance than triaminotrinitrobenzene based formulations. Equations of state for the explosive reactants and products are calibrated using a combination of existing and new experimental data and theoretical calculations. The AWSD rate law calibration utilizes both one-dimensional shock-to-detonation and multidimensional rate stick experiments to capture the shock initiation and propagating detonation regimes. Validation of the calibrated model is demonstrated through comparison with recent gas-gun experiments.

Intrinsic exchange bias from interfacial reconstruction in an epitaxial Ni x Co y Fe 3– x – y O 4 (111)/α-Al 2 O 3 (0001) thin film family

Intrinsic exchange bias is known as the unidirectional exchange anisotropy that emerges in a nominally single-component ferro-(ferri-)magnetic system. In this work, with magnetic and structural characterizations, we demonstrate that intrinsic exchange bias is a general phenomenon in (Ni, Co, Fe)-based spinel oxide films deposited on α-Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates, due to the emergence of a rock-salt interfacial layer consisting of antiferromagnetic CoO from interfacial reconstruction. We show that in Ni x Co y Fe 3–x–y O 4 (111)/α-Al 2 O 3 (0001) films, intrinsic exchange bias and interfacial reconstruction have consistent dependences on Co concentration y, while the Ni and Fe concentration appears to be less important. This work establishes a family of intrinsic exchange bias materials with great tunability by stoichiometry and highlights the strategy of interface engineering in controlling material functionalities.

Electrostatic gate-controlled quantum interference in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas at the (La 0.3 ⁢Sr 0.7 )(Al 0.65 ⁢Ta 0.35 )O 3 /SrTiO 3 interface

Here, we report quantum oscillations in magnetoresistance that are periodic in magnetic field (𝐵), observed at the interface between (La 0.3 ⁢Sr 0.7 )(Al 0.65 ⁢Ta 0.35 )O 3 and SrTiO 3 . Unlike Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations, which appear at magnetic fields > 7 T and diminish quickly as the temperature rises, these 𝐵-periodic oscillations emerge at low fields and persist up to 10 K. Their amplitude decays exponentially with both temperature and field, specifying dephasing of quantum interference. Increasing the carrier density through electrostatic gating results in a systematic reduction in both the amplitude and frequency of the oscillations, with complete suppression beyond a certain gate voltage. We attribute these oscillations to the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak effect, likely arising from naturally formed closed-loop paths due to the interconnected quasi-one-dimensional conduction channels along SrTiO 3 domain walls. The relatively long phase coherence length (≃ 1.8 µ⁢m at 0.1 K), estimated from the oscillation amplitude, highlights the potential of complex oxide interfaces as a promising platform for exploring quantum interference effects and advancing device concepts in quantum technologies, such as mesoscopic interferometers and quantum sensors.

Complex magnetic order in the decorated spin-chain system Rb 2 Mn 3 ( MoO 4 ) 3 ( OH ) 2

The macroscopic magnetic properties and microscopic magnetic structure of Rb 2 Mn 3 (MoO 4 ) 3 (OH) 2 (space group Pn ma) are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The compound's crystal structure contains bond-alternating [Mn 3 O 11 ] ∞ chains along the b axis, formed by isosceles triangles of Mn ions occupying two crystallographically nonequivalent sites (the Mn1 site on the base and Mn2 site on the vertex). These chains are only weakly linked to each other by nonmagnetic oxyanions. Both superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and neutron diffraction experiments show two successive magnetic transitions as a function of temperature. On cooling, it transitions from a paramagnetic phase into an incommensurate phase below 4.5 K with a magnetic wave vector near k 1 = ( 0 , 0.46 , 0 ). An additional commensurate antiferromagnetically ordered component arises with k 2 = ( 0, 0, 0), forming a complex magnetic structure below 3.5 K with two different propagation vectors of different stars. On further cooling, the incommensurate wave vector undergoes a lock-in transition below 2.3 K. The experimental results suggest that the magnetic superspace group is Pnma. 1' (0b0) s0ss for the single- k incommensurate phase and is Pn' m a ( 0 b 0 ) 00 s for the two- k magnetic phase. We propose a simplified magnetic structure model taking into account the major ordered contributions, where the commensurate k 2 defines the ordering of the c-axis component of the Mn1 magnetic moment, while the incommensurate k 1 describes the ordering of the ab -plane components of both Mn1 and Mn2 moments into elliptical cycloids.

Direct determination of the zero-field splitting for the Fe 3+ ion in a synthetic polymorph of NaMgFe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 ·9H 2 O: A natural metal-organic framework

Here we employed inelastic neutron scattering (INS), specific heat, and magnetization analysis to study the magnetism in a synthetic polymorph of the quasi-two-dimensional natural metal-organic framework material, stepanovite NaMgFe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 ∙9H 2 O. No long-range magnetic order can be observed down to 0.5 K. The INS spectra show two dispersionless excitations at energy transfer 0.028(1) and 0.050(1) meV at base temperature, which are derived from the magnetic transitions between zero-field splitting (ZFS) of S = 5/2 ground state multiplets of Fe 3+ ion. Further analysis of the INS results shows that the Fe 3+ ion has an easy-axis anisotropy with axial ZFS parameter D = –0.0128(5) meV and rhombic parameter E = 0.0014(5) meV. The upward behavior at zero field and Schottky-like peak under magnetic field of the low-temperature magnetic specific heat further support the INS results. Our results clearly reveal the magnetic ground and excited state of this stepanovite polymorph.

Single-ion anisotropy is necessary and appropriate to study the magnetic behavior of ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$ moments with ${J}_{\text{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ on the honeycomb lattice in ${\mathrm{Tb}}_{2}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{9}$

By developing models of increasing complexity, we show that a model without single-ion anisotropy (SIA) cannot explain the magnetic properties of J eff = 1 / 2 Tb 3+ moments in the orthorhombically distorted, honeycomb material Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . In four different models for the magnetization of a single honeycomb layer, the only sources of anisotropy are symmetric exchange interactions J nαβ = J nβα along three different bonds n , an anisotropic $\underline{g}$ tensor, and a Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interaction (asymmetric exchange) that produces the observed canted moment along b . With 21 parameters, the best such model yields χ 2 = 0.065 , which is substantially smaller than χ 2 = 0.112 obtained using a Heisenberg model containing six parameters including easy-axis anisotropy. However, models without SIA fail to reproduce the linear dependence of the magnetization with a field perpendicular to the Ising axis while predicting a saturation magnetization that is far too low. Due to the complex crystal-field environments, we argue that SIA is necessary to study low-symmetry, three-dimensional J eff = 1 / 2 materials containing Tb 3+ ions.
