Multirate sampled-data systems analysis via vector operators

The primary difficulties of both the time-domain switch decomposition method and the frequency-domain decomposition method are overcome by introducing certain matrix operators and performing spectral factorization of resulting matrices of polynomials in the z-transform variable. Topological operations of the switch-decomposition method are simplified. This new approach eliminates the need to solve a system of equations with rational polynomial coefficients such as arises in the frequency-decomposition method. The determination of a multirate sampled-data system's characteristic polynomial no longer requires the evaluation of a determinant of rational polynomial elements. New results on obtaining modified z-transforms from standard z-transforms at a faster rate and vice versa are presented.

Deployment of Autonomous GPS Stations in Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica

During the 1998-1999 Antarctic field season, we installed three autonomous GPS stations in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica to measure glacio-isostatic rebound and rates of spreading across the West Antarctic Rift System. The systems collect data throughout the entire year and therefore must function during the warm, relatively mild summer, and cold, harsh winters. They are powered by gel cell batteries that are charged by wind and solar power. The system includes dual data logging capability. We log data at 5 minute intervals within the receiver and at 30 second intervals to a serial data logger. We do not require 365 days of continuous data for well determined crustal velocities, but rather long periods (greater than 24 hours) of continuous data distributed throughout the year. Therefore, for simplicity, we designed the system to accept occasional data interruptions. The batteries, in addition to supplying power, act as a thermal capacitive heat storage device to help regulate the temperatures within the system. This storage system absorbs the majority of the 10-15 watts of power from the receiver and 5 watts from the data logger which helps to maintain temperature for long periods of time. Power is switched off when the temperature within the system enclosure reaches 50'C and is reconnected at 20 C. If battery voltage drops too low the batteries will freeze. Therefore, we cut the power off when the batteries drop to a low voltage of 12.45V. Power is restored at 13.2V. The temperature and power hysteresis allows for a minimum of several days of data to be collected before system shutdowns. A check of all three stations in late January 1999 indicated that the thermal and power control systems are performing as expected. We plan to implement satellite telemetry to the systems during the 2000-2001 season following a year of development.

Simulation of the Australian Mobilesat signalling scheme

The proposed Australian Mobilesat system will provide a range of circuit switched voice/data services using the B-series satellites. The reliability of the signalling scheme between the Network Management Station (NMS) and the mobile terminal (MT) is of critical importance to the performance of the overall system. Simulation results of the performance of the signalling scheme under various channel conditions and coding schemes are presented.

Dual cathode system for electron beam instruments

An electron beam source having a single electron optical axis is provided with two coplanar cathodes equally spaced on opposite sides from the electron optical axis. A switch permits selecting either cathode, and a deflection system comprised of electromagnets, each with separate pole pieces equally spaced from the plane of the cathodes and electron optical axis, first deflects the electron beam from a selected cathode toward the electron optical axis, and then in an opposite direction into convergence with the electron optical axis. The result is that the electron beam from one selected cathode undergoes a sigmoid deflection in two opposite directions, like the letter S, with the sigmoid deflection of each being a mirror image of the other.

Computer-Aided Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems (CAMAPPS), phase 1

The large-signal behaviors of a regulator depend largely on the type of power circuit topology and control. Thus, for maximum flexibility, it is best to develop models for each functional block a independent modules. A regulator can then be configured by collecting appropriate pre-defined modules for each functional block. In order to complete the component model generation for a comprehensive spacecraft power system, the following modules were developed: solar array switching unit and control; shunt regulators; and battery discharger. The capability of each module is demonstrated using a simplified Direct Energy Transfer (DET) system. Large-signal behaviors of solar array power systems were analyzed. Stability of the solar array system operating points with a nonlinear load is analyzed. The state-plane analysis illustrates trajectories of the system operating point under various conditions. Stability and transient responses of the system operating near the solar array's maximum power point are also analyzed. The solar array system mode of operation is described using the DET spacecraft power system. The DET system is simulated for various operating conditions. Transfer of the software program CAMAPPS (Computer Aided Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems) to NASA/GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center) was accomplished.

Characterization of the yeast copper-inducible promoter system in Arabidopsis thaliana

Inducible promoters or gene-switches are used to both spatially and temporally regulate gene expression. Such regulation can provide information concerning the function of a gene in a developmental context as well as avoid potential harmful effects due to overexpression. A gfp construct under the control of a copper-inducible promoter was introduced into Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. and the regulatory parameters of this inducible promoter were determined. Here, we describe the time-course of up- and down-regulation of GFP expression in response to copper level, the optimal regulatory levels of copper, and the tissue specificity of expression in three transgenic lines. We conclude that the copper-inducible promoter system may be useful in regulating the time and location of gene expression in A. thaliana.

The Effect of Planetary Albedo on Solar Orientation of Spacecraft

The analytical expression for the solar orientation error caused by planetary albedo is derived. A typical solar sensor output characteristic is assumed and a computer solution to the analytical is obtained. The computer results are presented for a spacecraft in the vicinity of Earth, Venus, Mars, and the Moon. Each planetary body is assumed to be a spherical diffuse reflector with cylindrical shadows and a constant albedo. The data generated herein permit the selection of an appropriate coarse-sensor to fine-sensor switching angle for solar orientation control systems and facilitate the the interpretation of solar-referenced scientific experiment data.

Systems performance monitoring for advanced manned spacecraft

Optimum system mechanizations for advanced manned spacecraft are considered. Several studies have proposed automation of the onboard system management task, with functions such as system status monitoring, configuration management, and redundancy management being accomplished under computer control. An experimental system was used in the laboratory to investigate hardware and software requirements for accomplishing these onboard system management functions. A performance monitor system is proposed for the space shuttle. This system provides support to the flight crew in the management of all onboard systems but does not perform critical switching functions during the flight phase.

Actuator digital interface unit (AIU)

Alternate versions of the actuator interface unit are presented. One alternate is a dual-failure immune configuration which feeds a look-and-switch dual-failure immune hydraulic system. The other alternate is a single-failure immune configuration which feeds a majority voting hydraulic system. Both systems communicate with the data bus through data terminals dedicated to each user subsystem. Both operational control data and configuration control information are processed in and out of the subsystem via the data terminal which yields the actuator interface subsystem, self-managing within its failure immunity capability.

The dynamics and optimal control of spinning spacecraft and movable telescoping appendages, part A

The problem of optimal control with a minimum time criterion as applied to a single boom system for achieving two axis control is discussed. The special case where the initial conditions are such that the system can be driven to the equilibrium state with only a single switching maneuver in the bang-bang optimal sequence is analyzed. The system responses are presented. Application of the linear regulator problem for the optimal control of the telescoping system is extended to consider the effects of measurement and plant noises. The noise uncertainties are included with an application of the estimator - Kalman filter problem. Different schemes for measuring the components of the angular velocity are considered. Analytical results are obtained for special cases, and numerical results are presented for the general case.
